This is basically a copy of MegaWorld Smash 1, which is a very good game, so be aware of that. Love these types of games though, and please giveaway MegaWorld Smash 3!

Well, this is a first. I get to the "Setup", click on that, and then I get the words, "successfully activated", but then, there's no folder with the game in it, or there's no game anywhere, whatsoever. I've been downloading games from this site, for a few years now, and the ones I've wanted, and picked, have always installed, and played fine. I was planning on restarting my computer, so I'll see if it comes up after I do that. I have Windows 7 Pro, 64bit, with the Chrome browser.

joanofark06,

The games exe file is wrapped in a Themida wrapper. This can stop the game from being downloaded. Even though it says its activated, that is an automated message. Please read my reply to Jeffrey K Benham, if you follow any of the three fixes it should allow the game to be installed. Unfortunately the giveaway team were forced to add the wrapper several years ago because of hackers who were able to hack the original wrapper and then download an executable that could be installed at any time after the giveaway was over. This caused some developers to stop giving games to the site becaus e their games were appearing on peer to peer site.

I don't understand something.

I downloaded this game months ago from a game site and it was free and is still free today?

How are they asking for money when it's always free?

mark close,

Hello Mark,

The game is not free in the sense that it is always free or freeware. It's actually a commercial game originally sold via Alawar. and is still sold at various game sites.

The developer has come to an arrangement where they allow the game to be downloaded for free, however there is low level adware included with the games from those sites where you get it free. It's one of the reasons the game opens to the host site when you first install it and whenever you play then close the game down. There are ways to stop that, but if you do you are breaking the EULA that you entered into when you downloaded and played the game. Every time your browser opens to one of those sites, they earn money, part of which is split with the developer. It's a way that older games like Strike Ball 3, which was released a decade ago can still make a reasonable amount of money for the developer. If they relied solely on sales, there would be very little income for a game that was released 10 years ago.

The giveaway version has had part of the adware removed, so its worth downloading it from here rather than directly from MyPlayCity or any one of the other sites that allow free downloads.

This situation became common practice following the financial crisis back in 2008 when arcade games dropped in price significantly, from an average of $19.99 per game to less than $6. Many small development houses went bankrupt and even some of the big name developers that created AAA games such as THQ (who developed the Red Faction franchise and the Company of Heroes franchises. Also the developers of the AAA Bioshock franchise also went bust after that crisis. So, these free sites blossomed after that crisis, as did the indie game bundles where you could buy games for up to 95% off their usual prices. Sadly many of the indie bundles you can buy today are filled with dross (usually made with free game engines, or ones such as RPG Maker, that is often on sale via places like Steam. I got a whole raft of RPG Maker dlc's plus the base engine from one of the Humble bundles several years ago, that would have cost me around £150 to buy direct from Steam, but I got the whole lot for £5. I've seen hundreds of RPG Maker games released on Steam over the intervening years usually by wannabe game developers. There are exceptions to what I said above about most indie bundle being dross, i.e. some bundles are still pretty good deals for example the Humble bundles especially the monthly bundle that you subscribe to and where for $12 a month you get around $150 worth of decent games. and Indie Gala, both of which were front runners in that side of sales.

Whiterabbit-uk,
Now I don't know what to think?

Erased my old, free issue of this game that came loaded with a bunch of junk, only to download This version ... along with a ton of junk!?

This version is actually worse than my other version "and" it's given 'freely' by the same folks.

Reply   |   Comment by mark close  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

mark close, Hi Mark, If you downloaded the initial version from MyPlayCity, then the giveaway version should have less adware included becasue the folder that contains the toolbar installation has been removed. That said, it also depends on when you downloaded the original because MyPlayCity do change their adware occasionally. sometimes removing virtually everything, then reintroducing it later.

One of the very few casual games that will enable a screen size that allows full screen on my w*i*d*e monitor. Lots of sizes to pick from. The best news is that on the Normal play mode...I can get past the 1st level! Recommended game, particularly so when it is free. Thanks to MyPlayCity and to Whiterabbit! -Guyr8s

I can't get it to activate. I have Emisoft Antimalware and it always pops up with a warning and gives me a chance to respond, if it suspects a malware problem.

Reply   |   Comment by Jeffrey K Benham  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Jeffrey K Benham,
Read the readme.txt file included in the Zip file you download.

The game is protected by a commercial "wrapper" program to enforce the 24hour limit on activating it for free. The problem is, many anti-malware and anti-virus programs suspect anything that is protected from tampering like that is a "potential threat" because many malevolent programs use a similar means of protecting themselves, so the security programs may block installing the Giveaway of the Day games.

This is a "false positive" and can be ignored if the security program allows you to make that decision, otherwise you may have to temporarily disable the security program until the game is installed.
(That can be a disturbing thing to do the first time you encounter it, but in this case it's safe.)

If you do turn off the security software, be certain to remember to re-enable it after the game is installed.

Reply   |   Comment by BobR  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Jeffrey K Benham, Hi Jeffrey,

Your security is probably blocking the game due to the wrapper because it contains Themida code, which can also be used to hide malware. The giveaway team always check all downloads for malware and because of that they have never given away a game infected with malware since the project started back in December 2006. they have given away almost 2000 games since then with no infections. There are three things you can do to get the game installed. The easiest is to temporarily turn off your security, install the game, then turn your security back on, the second is to while-list the giveaway files and the third is to reboot in safe mode with networking, install the game, then reboot as normal.

Please do let me know if you are successful

If none of the above work, check the FAQ;s thread over in the Game discussion forums so HERE, also check these comments later as there are some helpful community members who may be able to help. :)

Whiterabbit-uk, Thanks, but I scanned it with Emisoft and it found no problems. I know that there is never any malware in these files, but wanted to see if they thought so. When I had Kaspersky, I could never download a game. I will keep trying.

This downloaded and installed without issue on Win10 Home x64.

I have been enjoying playing last week's Strike Ball 2 and as this is next in that serious, I look forward to playing it as well. The graphics are exceptional!

Looking briefly at today's game, there is one minor difference I noticed. Because I have the Windows magnifier opened at about an inch and a half and docked at the top of my screen, I like to play in windowed mode when possible. The SB2 window is a perfect larger size but this one is small, the same size as the MPC popup window, making it unusable, had to go full screen. No biggie, probably really doesn't matter to anyone but me, just pointing it out.

It's WorldPride here in NYC so lots going on and no time to play this now but if it is anything like SB2, I am confident it will be just as good, if not better!

Thank you to all involved for this giveaway. And, as aways, to Stephen for all your efforts here.

FAB-U-LOUS, darling!
I'm still working my way through SB2 Deluxe from a week or three ago and I'm loving it; so this is just a bonus!
If you're reading this an haven't played any of the series, the graphics are silky smooth even with motherboard Intel HD graphics: no fancy game card needed.
If you're wondering, when the ball is under something, a small white dot appears to show you where it is. The trick is to not be distracted by (for example) a bomber flying over at the same time! The dot will still be there and ON TOP of ALL other objects.
I was puzzled by people saying SB2 was "too slow" but you can of course change speed in its INI file. For me the speed is "just right" but maybe that's because I'm an old fogey!
Anyway, thanks so much GGOTD, MPC, Alawar, and all concerned for today's giveaway. Whiterabbit is right: try it, you won't be disappointed!

Strike Ball 3
In Brief
Strike ball 3 is a 3D brick buster that was originally given away almost six years ago (7th July 2013). You can check the community comments out HERE. I gave this an 8.5 overall, but for game play I gave a 9. Well worth downloading as it is the best of the Strike Ball games.
SB3-001

SB3-002
Installation:
Strike Ball 3 downloads to a 32.4MB zip file that unzips to three files, (a setup.gcd security wrapper the set-up file and a read me). The game installs to the following path by default, but can be changed if you wish. The installed game is approximately 76.2 MB in size.
C:\Program Files (x86)\MyPlayCity.com\Strike Ball 3
Four shortcuts are installed to the desktop; the shortcut to the game, plus three others ''Play Online Games, MyPlayCity Games and a shortcut to a free online game. These latter three shortcuts can be deleted once the game has been installed. The Themida wrapper may alert your security and even block the installation; there are details about this issue in the read me that unpacks from the downloaded zip file.
If you miss today's giveaway it is available free from MyPlayCity 24/7

SB3-004
Introduction
Strike Ball 3 is one of the better 3D breakouts that has an updated graphics engine called NVidia PhysX engine. This has led to great improvements to the games graphics compared to the two previous versions of Strike Ball. The engine has enabled improved animations which include a more natural movement when brick models are being destroyed.
Whiterabbit-uk 29th June 2019
The Game
The brick-busting genre is one of gaming's oldest chestnuts, and this time Strike Ball 3 is up. The third game in the series from Russian developer Owl Games, Strike Ball 3 builds upon its predecessors very well.
The original Strike Ball was a rudimentary 3D ball-breaker, but provided decent fun. The sequel, Strike Ball 2 was an enormous step up from the original that featured a slew of power-ups and great level design.
SB3-005

SB3-006
It must be said that compared to the step up from the original to the sequel, Strike Ball 3 is less revolutionary compared to Strike Ball 2. However, the changes are very important, and fundamentally alter the game play.
When booted up for the first time, check out all the graphics options. If you have a higher-end computer, you’ll be able to tweak all sorts of special effects like color depth and reflections. While these options are purely aesthetic, they really add a high level of polish and sparkle to the game. It’s a shame that a number of casual gamers’ rigs probably won’t be able to handle the upper-end graphics to see the game as it could be, but fear not: even on the lowest settings, Strike Ball 3 is still quite pretty.
The biggest addition to Strike Ball 3 is the PhysX engine, powered by nVidia. Basically, this means that if you knock a box over, the game will calculate exactly how it will tumble, roll or ricochet off other objects. Right off the bat, the advantages to adding this are obvious: Imagine a giant tower built of destructible bricks. You break its foundations. As the bricks fall, they sprawl all over the level, dynamically changing the play field. Now add four balls each ricocheting off each other, and you can begin to imagine some of the chaotic joy in Strike Ball 3.
SB3-007

SB3-008
The level designs take great advantage of this physics engine, but that’s not the only ace up Strike Ball 3’s sleeve. Items play a huge role in the game. There are helpful items, like bombs that explode all the scenery, or hindering items like ball speed-ups or paddle-shrinkers. But best of all, there are levels designed specifically around items. For instance, metal bricks cannot be destroyed by the standard ball. However, there is one machine that doles out homing missile power-ups. Start collecting those, and the metal blocks can be decimated, allowing your ball to go in and take care of business. Power-ups are also cumulative, so if you get a 2x power-up, then a 3x and fireball, suddenly there are six flaming spheres of annihilation at your control.
In a new feature for the series, these items are up-gradable. Levels are littered with collectible stars. Between each of the 100 levels, you can buy upgrades for items with these starts, both for positive and negative items. An upgrade for a positive item could be more ammunition for a machine gun upgrade, or extra time for a protective energy barrier. An upgrade for a negative item lessens the item’s impact, like reducing the amount of time your ball’s trajectory goes nuts with the Crazy Ball item. After a few levels, the amount of control over your destruction goes up.
SB3-009

SB3-017
Speaking of control, Strike Ball 3 adds a new twist to your paddle in the form of a magnetic control. If you find that the ball is just not going where you want it to, you can press your left mouse button, and the paddle actively draws the ball towards it. Although not original (the ricochet series also had this ability) It’s a great feature, and as the levels get more complex, it’s very helpful.
If there’s one aspect in which Strike Ball 3 falls, it’s the music. The level of excitement the music brings falls somewhere between an elevator and my dentist’s waiting room. There aren’t enough tracks for the length of this game, and the tracks that are there are a little too easy-going compared to the game play. Also, with such complicated physics and graphics engines at work, there is occasional slowdown during the game. See below for details of how to change the music
Overall, though, Strike Ball 3 is a great, dynamic ball-breaker that is definitely more than your average time-waster. It’s amazing that, after all these years, there are still new ways to move the genre ahead. The improvements from one Strike Ball game to the next have been fantastic. I’ll certainly be buying Strike Ball 4 if it’s ever released).

Video of Game Play
You can see several videos of Strike Ball 3 HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE
The Music:
The music is pretty non descript. If you want to change it for something you like to listen to it is possible. firstly locate the music files. If you allowed the game to be installed to the default position you can find the files by following the path C:\Program Files (x86)\MyPlayCity.com\StrikeBall3_game\resources\Musics\track_1.ogg. You will need to convert any music you want to use into the .ogg format. Then change the name to one of the four files in the Music folder (track_1 to track_4)
Conclusion
There are better breakout games IMO, (e.g. Shatter, Ricochet Infinity, Incrediball: The Seven Sapphires, Acky’s XP Breakout, Hyperballoid 2, Action Ball 1 & 2 plus several others), but for a 3D breakout, its still one of the better ones. You get 100 levels to work through. The beauty of most breakout games are that they are almost infinitely re-playable as you never play the game exactly the same way each time you play through. This is one of the first 3D breakouts to offer up-gradable power ups; this ability also offers you different game play each time you play through as you can select different power ups to upgrade first. There are 30 power ups each one can be upgraded 3 times. You need to collect all of the stars from each level and as the level upgrade increases the cost to upgrade costs more stars. for example to upgrade just one power up to its highest level will take 6 game levels, which means it's impossible to upgrade all of the power ups in one full game of 100 levels.
SB3-013

SB3-014
There’s nothing negative that I can say about the game apart from maybe the music, but you can always change that for your favorite music. Just follow the instructions I've given above. One suggestion I would make would be to give star credits for any extra balls you may have kept in play above the first one. You could get an extra star for each ball kept in play. This game is well worth a download, even if you don’t like breakouts that much. A great game for novice players, with two difficulty levels, the easiest of which it’s hard to lose a life. Another feature of the game is the fact that once unlocked you can return to any level and replay it whenever you want
