Astro Fury Has been given away three times; the first time was in the second week of the game giveaways inception on the 20th Dec 2006 HERE, where it received a 91% positive rating from 139 votes with 35 comments which you can see HERE. (You can see the regular price of arcade games back in 2006 i.e. $19.99 per game. Post 2008. the price of arcade games dropped drastically to between $4 to $6 game and is when many of the free game sites and a few years later the massively discounted indie bundles appeared (between 90% to 95% off the usual prices). The second time this game was given away was the 30th October 2007 HERE, where it received an 88% positive rating from 269 votes with 54 comments which you can see HERE. Finally, it was given away again 11 years later on the 1st September 2018 HERE, where it received a positive 88% from 24 votes, with 10 comments., which you can see HERE.

The Game:
You are the sole survivor of earths space armada, sent to protect the earth from a massive attack by alien space ships! Their furious attacks restrict your movements significantly, their space supremacy is overwhelming, and their force is obviously far superior to yours; especially their boss ships. There are waves of enemy ships attacking you constantly, with a ruling boss ship coming at the end of every tenth wave. These boss ships are almost impossible to destroy unless suitable tactics are employed by you, one of which includes securing as many secondary weapons as you can and keeping your best upgraded primary weapon intact. If you lose your best primary weapon, it's more than likely you'll have to restart the level, though it's not impossible. Each successive boss becomes more difficult to destroy, so it is imperative that you collect as many upgrades and powerups as possible during each wave, and use the collected weaponry to destroy the boss ships rather than squander them on the inferior ships that precede each boss.
If you don't employ suitable tactics to survive each wave and destroy the enemy boss ships, earth is finished. ;) Astro Fury is an excellent space shooter for those who enjoy playing space shoot em ups.

Astro-Fury-008
You've got the right ship for the job, the equipment, and hopefully the skills to stay alive until all the bosses are destroyed and humanity is saved from slavery or extinction by the attacking aliens.
Astro Fury has three skill levels, numerous stages that will end with a final battle against the boss. You are free to get upgrades - if you fight well enough and destroy many aircrafts. Every time you are attacked you need to dodge the enemy weaponry. Otherwise the number of lives will be decreased. Each level is full of a wide variety of aircrafts that differ in size, level of danger and speed. You need to adjust to the new types of enemies and make use of the upgrades that are made available to you quickly or you will be the one defeated.

Conclusion:
Although a little dated now is is still an excellent game. If you like scrolling space shooters, this is worth a download. In my opinion it’s not the best (I have hundreds of this genre), but for free you can’t go wrong. I did find some of the early levels difficult due to poor eye sight. The backgrounds in those early levels were lighter than later levels and because of this it made it hard to see enemy bullets especially when multiple explosions often masked the bullets, making it really hard to dodge. One of the things I like about this game are the power ups, though there isn’t any tutorial, so you’ll have to learn from experience about their usefulness. This is one of those games you’ll find hard to stop playing once you get into it (assuming you enjoy Shmup's).

I've posted links to literally hundreds of other Shmup's and related games at the end of this review. Some Shmup's are available via Steam and others from the Free game sites (including MyPlayCity) and other freeware sites.

Having problems installing today's game?
If you have a problem installing or activating or getting Astro Fury to work please visit the problems section, which you can find in the FAQ's thread HERE. Because the game is over 10 years old, you may need to play the game in compatibility mode, and, if you are using the latest monitors, you may need to adjust the screen resolution, but before you do, try the video setting changes via the compatibility mode first.

The latest free games from Epic Games is a clicker game called Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms. If you install and start the game before the next game changeover this coming Thursday, you get around $100 worth of extra's. You'll find details of the game HERE.

Please see Delenn's threads for other Steam and Non Steam freebies HERE and HERE respectively. There won't be new freebies every week from these sections apart from the Epic games, but it is worth keeping your eyes open regularly for details. Delenn usually posts details when a game is being offered free for a temporary period. These include games from Good Old Games, Ubisoft's uPlay client, Valves Steam client, EA Games Origin client and other indie developers. You'll find hundreds of freeware games of all arcade and indie genres on Itch.io and Caimans Games as well as other sources. Check out the game discussion forums for older posts HERE (the sticky section is useful). Many of the earlier posts may be out of date with respect to the links I and others have provided to the free games; however, you only need to know the name of the game to find most of them via other sources. Many of those games from 2008 to around 2017 were posted as part of a project to supplement the lack of weekday games when the game giveaway stopped giving games away around Easter 2008 (due to the financial crisis) until November 2019 when Falcoware stepped into the weekday slot, with the occasional limited (restricted to a specific number of Steam keys) free AAA and decent indie arcade games game from Steam starting back in 2017; (for example lucky winners have had Warhammer Vermintide 1 & 2 plus DLC for version 2, Dreadlands, DLC for World of Tanks and World of Warships, The Last Roman Village, ADM: Angels, Demons & Men and the sequel ADM 2: When Worlds Collide, U-BOOT 1945, Mount & Blade: Warband, Immortal Unchained, Onion Force, 1993: Space Machine, Runaway VR, Jump Step Step, Megamagic: Wizards of the Neon Age, Tree of Life, Star Vikings Forever, Rogalia, Alien Hallway 2, Cargo Cult: Shoot'n'Loot VR, Bold New World, several Forge of Gods dlc packs e.g. Team of Justice Pack, The Apotheosis Project, TangramsVR, Mighty Party dlc, UnnyWorld - Founder's Pack, SteamWorld Dig, Minion Masters, Dreamals: Dream Quest, Destroyer: Invasion, MIND SHIFT, Madrobot X, MIND BLOX, MIND TWINS - The Twisted Co-op Platformer, Next Up Hero, Runaway VR, ZBlitz with 1000 Gems, Conan Exiles as well as others).

I've not posted details of any Indie Gala freebies since my older computer went on the Fritz back in October last year. Since then Indie Gala have added quite a lot more free games, some of which are definitely worth downloading. You can find the latest freebies HERE and their showcase list, which includes all the freebies still current; (many of which have been included for a couple of years now) HERE.

It’s worth adding these links to your favorites and checking regularly for available freebies. Most are only free for a specific time. If you miss the deadline you’ll miss out. Once added to your account, they are yours to keep. :)

virus detected, impossible to install

tiger t,

Hi Tiger t,

As already mentioned yesterday; there is no malware included with this download. Your security result is a false positive.

The giveaway team have been giving games away since Dec 2006 and prior to that from Oct 2006 to Dec 2006 via the applications side of the project and have never given away a game from the two thousand plus games they have given away since then. what your anti malware suite is picking up is likely the low level adware that free games sites like MyPlayCity, TooMky Games and others use to earn cash so that these games can be given away. The adverts that you may see when you install the game and the browser redirection to MyPlayCitie's web site when you close the game down earn money; part of which goes to the developer for allowing the game to be given away for free. The adverts are confined to the game only and no malware is injected into your system. If we didn't have this business model we wouldn't be getting many free games.

The other cause for the virus warning could be the presence of Themida code, which can be used to hide malware. In this case it's used to protect the game from hackers by wrapping the games executable in Themida code and in this case does not hide any malware.

I uploaded the Astro Fury download to Virus total and received zero hits from 61 anti malware suites. You can see the results via the link below:

https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/12c64f98614640e394fe4d77a2211433d76f669853e9843428b7661e2c240aa6/detection

p.s. As mentioned the giveaway team have been operating since 2006. It would not be in their interest to allow a game with malware to be downloaded from their servers. Over the years, they have built up a reputation for giving away clean applications and games. They always check any file that is to be downloaded from their servers with several of the top security suites to ensure they are safe. This has resulted in a 100% positive rating for every file downloaded since the inception of the project back in Oct 2006. Actually, on the applications side; there was one application given away several years ago that contained some suspicious files. It was new and the virus scanners had not registered it yet. So it got through all of the giveaways checks and my own security. Lots of community members complained and I seen to remember an apology was forthcoming. I also remember installing it and then had to jump through hoops to remove the problems it caused, but the game side of the project has always been 100% free of malware.

"… against the whole hip of spaceships attacking …"

That left me puzzled! Did they mean heap? :D Although, if you do suffer from hip pain, my sympathies: it can be murder LOL!

Also puzzled by Stephen saying that there's "no tutorial" despite there being a decent-enough looking Help page among the screenshots?

And the names of the level "batches" are just a little bit Zero Wing ("Through the enemies to the victory," for example).

But this looks like a fun one, thanks to GGOTD and Alawar for this!
