Astro Fury
In Brief
Astro Fury is an old SHoot eM UP (Shmup) , developed by Dream Dale and published by Alawar back in November 2006. We were given a registered copy via alawar December 2006.
Introduction:
You are pitted against waves of aliens ships intent on destroying earth. You must protect the earth using your only defense, a single ship armed with plasma bursts and a stash of wicked secondary weapons. You must repel an alien army that is bent on your destruction. Take control of a ship that can be armed to the teeth if you collect the power-ups that drop when you destroy some of their fleet.

100 levels

Installation:
Astro Fury downloads to a 18.9 MB zip file that unzips to three files, (a setup.gcd security wrapper, the set-up file and a read me). To install Astro Fury click on the orange key file labelled set up and not the setup.gcd file. Those with multiple hard drives can save games on any drive they wish, just change the default installation path. The newly installed game is 18.3 MB in size. The game installs to the following path by default, but can be changed by the user if you prefer:
C:\Program Files (x86)\MyPlayCity.com\Astro Fury
Four shortcuts are installed to the desktop, three of which can be safely deleted (Play Online Games, MyPlayCity Games and shortcuts to a free online game which vary each week). Also, if you don't like icons installed to the quick launch task bar, make sure you uncheck the box when the ''additional tasks'' window appears (after the Select Start Menu Folder window)

The Game:
You are the sole survivor of earths space armada, sent to protect the earth from a massive attack by alien space ships! Their furious attacks restict your movements signficantly, their space supremacy is overwhealming, and their force is obviously far superior to yours; especially their boss ships. There are waves of enemy ships attacking you constantly, with a ruling boss ship coming at the end of every tenth wave. These boss ships are almost impossible to destroy unless suitable tactics are employed by you. Each successive boss becomes more difficult to destroy, so it is imperative that you collect as many upgrades and powerups as possible during each wave, and use the collected weaponry to destroy the boss ships rather than squander them on the inferior ships that precede each boss.
If you don't employ suitable tactics to survive each wave and destroy the enemy boss ships, earth is finished. ;) ! Astro Fury is an excellent space shooter for those who enjoy playing space shoot em ups.
You've got the right ship for the job, the equipment, and hopefully the skills to stay aliove until all the bosses are destroyed and humanity is saved from slavery or extinction by the attacking aliens.
Astro Fury has three skill levels, numerous stages that will end with a final battle against the boss. You are free to get upgrades - if you fight well enough and destroy many aircrafts. Every time you are attacked you need to dodge the enemy weaponry. Otherwise the number of lives will be decreased. Each level is full of a wide variety of aircrafts that differ in size, level of danger and speed. You need to adjust to the new types of enemies and make use of the upgrades that are made available to you quickly or you will be the one defeated.

This was one of the first games given away via the game giveaway of the day project back in 2006. It received a 91% positive rating from 139 votes. You can see the 35 comments made (including mine before I started to write fuller reviews) HERE. The game was given away a second time a year later where it received a positive 88% rating out of 269 votes and included 54 comments, which you can read ="HERE

Conclusion:
Although a little dated now is is still an excellent game. If you like scrolling Space shooters, this is worth a download. In my opinion it’s not the best (I have hundreds of this genre), but for free you can’t go wrong. I did find some of the early levels difficult due to poor eye sight. The backgrounds in those early levels were lighter than later levels and because of this it made it hard to see enemy bullets especially when multiple explosions often masked the bullets, making it really hard to dodge. One of the things I like about this game are the power ups, though there isn’t any tutorial, so you’ll have to learn from experience about their usefulness. This is one of those games you’ll find hard to stop playing once you get into it.
If you miss today's game giveaway you can always get the game via MyPlayCity 24/7 HERE; or If you prefer to purchase the game you can get it directly from Big Fish Games HERE
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank MyPlayCity for giving away Astro Fury and also to the game giveaway team, as always, for securing other ways to get free games.
If for any reason you want to contact the giveaway team, for example, you have a game to offer the community, or are unable to download the latest game or other issues that the FAQ's thread or these comments don't cover or solve you can do so HERE

Having problems installing today's game?
If you have a problem installing or activating or getting Astro Fury to work please visit the problems section, which you can find in the FAQ's thread HERE. Because the game is over 10 years old, you may need to play the game in compatibility mode, and, if you are using the latest monitors, you may need to adjust the screen resolution, but before you do, try the video setting changes via the compatibility mode first. Also read through the community’s comments because sometimes fixes have already been posted. The main issue we have is with the giveaway wrapper, which uses a Themida based code to protect the games executable. Unfortunately, Themida is also used to hide malware; so, as a precaution, some security software may block the installation and sometimes even delete the executable file. Blocking or deletion is usually determined partly by the way your computer is set up. Usually you'll get a message saying ''the file is corrupted'', but, the files are okay. There are a couple of things you can do to overcome this issue. The first is to reboot in safe mode with networking, install the game then reboot, or secondly you can (at your own risk) temporarily turn off your security, install the game, then turn your security back on. A note of reassurance to those that choose the latter and quicker method. The game giveaway team have been giving away games for over a decade (Dec 2006 & prior to that, via the main site 2 or 3 times weekly from Oct 2006 to Dec 2006) and have 'NEVER' given away a game infected with malware; they always test every giveaway with several of the top anti-malware suites to ensure all games are free from malware.

Whiterabbit-uk, which shmups can you recommend? Which are your top 3?

................................Moderator Comment...............................
Hi Michael, I'll have to think about it? If the email you used to post this comment is genuine ( some community members use non-genuine emails) I'll email you over the coming days. It may be longer as I am rather busy at the moment, and it's bedtime for me now. There are so many, I'd have to think about it and will probably give you a longer list than three as there are so many and each has its own positives and negatives. It really depends on my mood, what I'm playing at the time etc. as to what I'd consider my favorites/the best; that said, there are some that have stood the test of time, are simple, but very addictive and have some original attributes. One of the ones I'm thinking about was given away here a couple of times back in 2007/8, but I've not seen it since. I'll let you know when I'm able. I've made a note on a sticky so I won't forget. I used to be able to rattle off all my favorite games, but since my accident, and the opiate meds I have to take (for chronic pain), my memory has been failing. I cannot remember any of the games names now (partly because i have so many of them), but still, I do know the gameplay of most. I'll need to look at my collection. I promise I'll get back to you. If the email isn't a real one, I'll post it in the Shmups thread I've linked to below that you'll find in the giveaway forums. I'll try and post the list over the next few weeks (hopefully). I'm actually quite busy at the moment, so it may take longer. I may even have a few spare Steam keys (for free) but no promises on both. :) (I still owe several community members Steam keys I promised them from over a year ago)

I did post a thread over in the forums several years ago called
''Space Shoot ‘Em ups or Shmup’s: A longish list of FREE games'' , which you can find HERE. I've brought it back to the front page for you to check out.

Seems like a just hold the mouse button down and fire away is the only strategy to this game. Too busy for me.

Thanks for the heads up on the Warhammer game! I snagged a copy.

I did play Astro Fury for a bit and enjoyed it. I wish they would give some sort of instructions (like how to shoot your special weapon or how to select the special weapon) but it's easy enough to figure out. Thanks!

Fun little SHMUP. Haven't had one in a while, so it's a nice distraction.
I just think the enemy getting a difficult to defeat shield, early in the game is a little much. Level 1-x should be for getting used to the game.

Nice little game, anyone who (like me) has trouble with the Themida crap and is unable to install the program without shutting down his whole protection, can download the full version of the game here at myplaycity: https://www.myplaycity.com/astro_fury/

Not having played one of these for some time I downloaded it. Whilst tit looks to have nice graphics etc - I found that it always played in full screen no matter if you selected full screen or desktop mode. I do not like games in full screen so deleted it.

..................................Moderator comment.....................................
Yes, I also prefer playing in windowed mode when writing up reviews. I find taking screen captures easier. Most of the older games won't let me take screen captures when in full-screen mode, throwing up a paused or continue screen. I already had this game after purchasing it from Alawar when it was first released Nov 2006. I remember kicking myself when it was then given away free via this site shortly after the game giveaway site was opened in December 2006.

That's funny it says 9.99$ because its from my play city and my play city-states that this game is "This game is brought to you by our sponsors. It is always free. NO TIME LIMITS!" and if i use your installer after 22 hours passed i won't be able to play it if I would like to play again in the near future

..................................Moderator comment.....................................
Astro Fury is still a commercial shareware game that usually costs $9.99 (used to be $19.99 prior to the financial crisis of 2008), meaning that technically it is not free. MyPlayCity and other free game sites like Gametop, FreeGamePick, and others have an accord with the developer/original publisher of the game that whenever a game is downloaded from their site, they pay the developer/original publisher a fee. The way this is achieved is by advertisements. Whenever you install any game from any of the free game sites your default browser is automatically redirected to the free game site, in this case, MyPlayCity. Also, at the beginning of the game, you'll get an advert for other games; then, when you close the game down your browser is again redirected to the free game site. Every subsequent time you play the game, your browser will be redirected to the free game site and you will get the advert at the beginning of the game. These are the prices you pay for getting the game gratis. The free game site earns money whenever your browser is redirected to the site. Part of which is then paid to the developer. This way even old games can earn a substantial amount of money when the game is installed via one of these free game sites. There are ways around the advert and browser redirections, but these break the EULA that you agree to when installing the game, so disabling them is basically stealing from the developer and MyPlayCity and could lead to legal action if discovered. With this business model, many small developers managed to survive the financial crisis of 2008, when the price of their games crashed from the above-mentioned figure of $19.99 to as low as $2. More free game sites sprang up using this business model shortly after and now you'll find lots of sites using this method to earn money for both the developer/original publisher, the middleman and you, a win-win-win situation for everyone. The only price as already mentioned is adverts, which don't affect the actual gameplay and the browser redirections. Other models have also arisen since 2008 such as the indie bundles where you can buy the games for as much as 95% off the current prices of the games.
