Fantastic game. Loved Galaga, love this too.

I've found that the "demo" errors that show up after you install some of these can be prevented by (a) double clicking the ACTIVATE file that comes in the zip, letting it do its thing, then running SETUP, and (this is the important part,) UNCHECKING the "run ... now" box, before clicking FINISH.

Hope this helps!

Hey #33 jean....you don't need to be a JERK about it, some nice comments about how to get the full version would be nice for those who never tried this before, and btw, I have been "operating" as you put it, computers for many years, so you can take that nasty comment and i think you know where to put it. Have a wonderful day.

Anyone that thinks THIS is boring, hasn't bother to play it. Some say it's like Galaxian, but I think it's like Space Invaders on STEROIDS! Great old-school type fun with a new twist. Thanks again Alawar and GGOTD.

For those having problems getting the game to be the real deal and not a demo, be sure you actually read the readme that comes with the archive you download.

Not all offerings (game or not) from Giveaway Of The Day are handled the wame way. Based on the stuff I've downloaded in the past, some only require one step (setup), some need two (activate, setup). Some may need you to input extra info to get your installed program/game to be the full thing (registration info that should be in the readme).

Take a few seconds to see what you need to do to get the offerings to work as intended or offered, just as you should with anything you download and run, free or not.

I'm having a problem with the resolution/windowing.

The game activated fine, but it opens in full-screen mode, and no matter what I do I can't change it to windowed mode. Selecting different Options changes the refresh rate, but not the screen size (my monitor's 1600 x 1200).

Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, is there a fix?

Full credit to ALAWAR for these games! Graphics are always good, but most importantly, the playability is consistantly good as well. I think all but one so far has been a keeper!

Now, as soon as I see "Alawar" as the publisher, I trust the game to be good. They are certainly building up a good reputation for enjoyable games.

it's an OK game, but simply average in everything, it's not so catchy.. But thanks anyway!
As a paid alternative I would recommend Ricochet: Infinity, quality combination of Arkanoid and top-down space shooter. You can get it from BigFishGames for as low as 6.99 USD (8.32 /w VAT included) with Jumbo Game Club Membership.

#7 Bobby V and anyone else who gets a 60 minute demo. All GAOTD and GGAOTD downloads are FULL VERSIONS provided you READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AND FOLLOW THEM! They NEVER give away demos. Read the Readme file people and DO WHAT IT SAYS TO DO! If you don't and all you get is a demo then it's good enough for you as you obviously DON'T have enough sense to be operating a computer much less be installing anything.

Hmmm... Personally I can't say I liked it :( Being capable to only move horizontally near bottom seem a bit limited compared to other games in the same genre.

Besides, its bit tireseome, at least in the beginning especialy when all the enemies appear and stop all alligned waiting for you to zapp them to pass on to the next level :(

Sorry Foobar; I spend far longer than I'd intended on this one with a break to go to the doctors in between as well. I totally forgot to give it a score.

Considering I've got quite a few of these I would now rate it at 7 out of 10. Not quite a buy it in my book now, (It's got to be an 8 for me personally) despite buying it several months ago, but thats only because I've got far better ones now. and why buy it when you can get the similar game Alien Wars for free(see the link in my first post above #25

Bovi, the link you gave, although pointing to a freeware game, is not actually free because you have to pay a subscription to be able to download any the games. (either monthly or yearly) From what I've seen of the several games I checked out, they all look like early 90's DOS games, although I only checked out a very small percentage of the thousands of freeware and abonadonware titles they have on offer. Thanks anyway

This was originally given away on the 20th December; (hi Bill50W, not seen you in awhile). It’s nice to see this one around again, especially for those that missed it the lat time. I bought it shortly after I lost the giveaway to a format. Until I started playing Jets and Guns I did prefer this type of space shooter, but I think nothing can touch J & C for sheer enjoyment and playability. Still this is a worthy game to have in your games library, especially if you download it today. Follow the link to see the previous comments about this game:

http://game.giveawayoftheday.com/astro-fury/#comments

This will please those on dial up as it’s smaller than some of the games we’ve received recently weighing in at only 12Mb. The install method is the usual activation and set up modules.

For those new to the game giveaway project you need to activate the game first by clicking on the activation module, then wait for the window to pop up saying it has been successfully activated before you start the install. You ‘may’ have to turn off your firewall for this to be successful, but once you’ve ticked the appropriate boxes in your firewall set up window, it shouldn’t be a problem next time.

The options menu is straightforward, although the implied ability to change your screen resolution from 800 x 600 and a windowed mode doesn’t actually exist (not in my version supplied by a rival of Alawar anyway). So perhaps more screen resolutions could be added if the game is ever updated or a sequel released. :) There’s also the usual music and sound toggles.

The game can be controlled by either the mouse and/or the key board and apparently the game supports joysticks as well, but I’ve not got my joystick set up (not used it for a couple of years now) so am unable to check.

The start screen gives you a choice of 10 campaigns, each with 10 levels of excellent pyrotechnic splendor (especially when you let loose with the secondary weapons :) but as you would expect, all apart from those you’ve completed are locked. Once you’ve unlocked a campaign, you can return to it any time you wish, although you have to start at the beginning of the campaign, if you previously left it anywhere except completed (10 levels). So, if you’re on the sevent eight or ninth level of a campaign, especially a previously uncompleted one, it’s well worth going those extra levels further so that it will unlock a new campaign rather than having to start from the beginning of that campaign again. If you love colorful explosions and are into color like myself, then you’ll love this game (although there’s nothing like the 360 degree space shooter Bullet Candy for that, lol). There are around 40 different types of enemies to beat as well as an impressive array of power ups that include extra lives and shield repairs, which you will definitely need because there are always loads of enemy ships and sometimes gun turrets, both occasionally protected behind force fields, to cope with. There are also loads of upgrades to primary and secondary weapons (well over 30). Secondary weapons are used by clicking the right mouse button. One word of advice though; don’t go shooting at certain ships willy-nilly as they send a shock wave of missiles at you that cover just about the whole of the bottom of the playing area. Shooting more than two or three of these closely together will undoubtedly lead to you being hit, especially if they are lower down in the game field.

At the end of each campaign you get a boss to beat. Make sure you’ve accumulated a good arsenal of secondary weapons for this encounter, because apart from the early campaigns, you’ll need them; although beware of losing a life while working up to collecting this arsenal as if you do, you lose all of your secondary weapons (apart from some very basic missiles that are usually given as default, I think) as well. As is usual with this genre, being hit by an enemy won’t destroy you immediately because you have shields, however besides incremental losses in your shield your primary weapons will be downgraded to the previous primary you were using. These upgrades are very much needed as your primary weapon starts off very weak.

As you progress through the campaigns you will be introduced to more different enemies at each stage

See the screenshots below for a flavor of the game, although I think the screenshots provided on the game giveaway page will give you enough of an idea with respect to eye candy than mine do. I’ve included my own screen captures and a link to a Google search as well unfortunatley I deleted the completed game a while back and therefore couldn’t show you the different back drops you get for each campaign. An interesting feature of the back drop is the change in the size of the planet that features in each campaign. As you progress through the levels of each campaign, you get closer to the planet you are attacking. What this game lacks in my opinion is a story line, which seems to be a popular addition to more recent games of this genre. Still, the actual game play can’t be faulted apart from the inability to escape from the bottom of the screen. :(

If you have no vertical space shooters, then I’d download this game. I personally think there are better vertical scrolling space shooters such as Hyperspace Invaders (although it’s a little dated compared to Astro Fury); and even better is the Star Defender series of which there are now four. Check out the latest in the series Star Defender 4:

http://www.reflexive.com/StarDefender4.html?CID=23307

Unfortunately Alawar only has the first three at the moment otherwise I’d much rather post a link to their site as they have been brilliant over the last month. Well here you go:

http://www.alawar.com/games/star-defender-3/

There are several categories of space shooter besides the vertical shooters, for example there’s the side scrollers such as Jets and Guns (probably the best of the bunch), Astrobatics, Star blasé, Scavenger (an excellent alternative) and Absolute Blue and for the kids one called space Skramble( spelled with a K and not a C), as well as 360 degree shooters such as Desperate Space, Bullet Candy and Alien Defense. There’s even third and first person versions of the game such as Void War (1st person) and Devastation Zone troopers (3rd person). There are lots more besides, but I’d never get this posted if I carried on, lol.

I’d recommend you try some of the demo’s that are available. Some of the above have been given away previously such as Bullet Candy, Star Blasé, Jets & Guns and Hyperspace Defenders, and I’m in no doubt that there will be others as well as some previous game giveaways being repeated. Still for free this is an excellent giveaway that I’m sure will give those of you who like space themed shooters, several hours of delightful playing. I’m amazed how one commenter above managed to get through 50 levels in such a short space of time though? (he must be a veteran space shooting fan :) )

I think a second in this series would be welcome, but I’d add the stop off between levels that you get with some of this genre, that enables you to buy updates. Also I’d make the ship free moving; that is not having it tied to the bottom of the screen. It adds so much more playability with such a mode.

I got a game called Alien Wars (also known commercially as Alien Stars which costs the usual $19.95) for free from Gametop.com. Which has a lot of similarities to this game. There is a price to pay though. Whenever you close the game down it will open a page to the sites home page; however I’ve never found anything else untoward though (malware, pop ups etc) and would highly recommend you check out what other games they have on offer for free; all the genres are represented (just about). When I close the game down I’m taken to the following page that has other shooters available, but unfortunately, this one seems to be no longer available. However it may be worth a try Goggling it and seeing if you can find it elsewhere for free. I like it better than today’s offering because you can move the ship anywhere on the arena.

http://www.gameteam.com/category/free-online-shooting/?utm_source=AlienWars&utm_medium=downloadable

Thought I’d just try a few links…….Yeah! I found it :)

http://www.gametop.com/download_free_shooting/play_alien_wars.html

Check out the following screenshots for it. Ignore the fact that it’s actually called Alien Stars:

Good enough I guess. Good graphics, and very nice flight patterns of the enemies. Nice powerups, some of which are really powerful.

I wouldn't call the audio "teeth-rattling", at least not in a good way. The music is unobtrusive and okay, as are probably the sounds in general, but the "almost-alarm-clock-beeping" background sound of the main gun is way annoying and causes me to not be able to play it.

Even with the annoying sound removed, I probably wouldn't feel it is worth a whole 20$, but it's not bad, and definitely worth trying (you might not hear or be as annoyed by the sound as me), so I'm not voting today.

If you like the concept, perhaps you would like Laser Age, in general inferior to Astro Fury, but free game and nice for a while.

Don't think I can recommend this game, and I'm removing it as I write. Polished graphics notwithstanding, with one's movement limited to the bottom of the screen (yes, I realize it's supposed to be that way) and primary weapons that are extremely weak (some very nice auxiliary weapons though!), the game quickly gets painfully boring and repetitive. It's a tough call, but if the criterion for endorsing a game is wanting to play it again, then this gets a thumbs down. I played up to level 3-9 before bowing out, and I have no desire to play it again.

Still, I think GameGiveaway is on the right track with Alawar after a nuclear summer of dreadful DoubleGames games. The proportion of good stuff against the throwaways is much higher now than it was a couple of months ago.

After playing some 50 or so levels, I'd label this as a pleasant little advanced Space Invaders clone with pretty high production values, but entirely too easy on Normal difficulty mode, and with every-10th-level bosses that aren't really much of a challenge. There are a staggering number of power-ups, some of which are very unbalanced, and gameplay is pretty much hold down the button and move back and forth.

Nice to play for free, but I would have been a little disappointed if I'd paid full price for this. A sort of marginal thumbs-up from me.
