Check Lee C and Peters comments for a possible fix. I got mine to work by trying Lee C's fix together with
Peters. I first deleted the game, then reinstalled it, then went into compatibility settings following Peters advice.
Alice and the Magic Gardens:
In Brief:
Alice and the Magic Gardens is a match three game. It was previously given away November 2nd, 2014 where it received a positive 78% from 363 votes with 53 comments which you can see HERE and again on the 4th July 2021 where it received a positive 88% from 51 votes with 11 comments which you can see HERE

You can see some videos of game play HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE.

When this was given away last time some community members, including myself had an issue where the game opened to a white screen. . I've tried changing the compatibility mode using different settings, but each time with the same result; a white screen. It could be something to do with Direct X. I think it runs with DX 8, I've tried replacing the DXDX81AB.dll but still couldn't get it to work. Today's version also opens to a white screen for me :( So cannot add any more images to today's giveaway.

The Game:
In a magical kingdom in a faraway land, a young girl named Alice spends her days working in the King’s castle. Days of indentured servitude leave time for Alice to daydream, as she fantasizes of how wonderful it would be to grow her own garden in peace and freedom. These dreams become reality when a desperate fairy named Luna steals Alice from the castle and begs for her help in returning the fairy population’s fruit supplies from a sorceress with evil intentions. Through a variety of match-three levels, you’ll need to gather enough food for the fairies and ultimately save the day.

The gameplay in Alice and the Magic Gardens isn’t nearly as varied as the game itself would like you to believe, with there being one major theme to every level. You need to make matches of three or more like “fruit lockers” which then disappear to show you an individual piece of fruit underneath. You then make matches with these fruit pieces to gather them for the fairies, completing a variety of goals in each level. That is, one goal might have you simply filling a bar by collecting every type of fruit on the screen, while another might ask you to collect a specific number of oranges, bananas and so on.

Unfortunately, these two separate items – the lockers and the fruit – can only be moved by swapping tiles of their own kind. This often leaves you with one or two lockers stranded in the middle of a level, which isolates some fruit from ever being matched. As you create matches with fruit, more lockers appear, continuing the cycle. It seems that Alawar expected this to happen, as a series of enhancements have been added to counteract them. For instance, you can fill a Shuffle button that allows you to randomize all current box locations. What’s more, you can make matches of three or more like fruit or lockers in an L shape, in addition to the standard horizontal or vertical lines. Still, the inability to move some fruit lockers (and by association, some pieces of fruit) causes plenty of unnecessary frustration.

Adding to the complexity of each level are power-ups and challenges like spiders or worms. Worms destroy pieces of fruit while spiders place a web atop them. Power-ups, then, stop them by allowing you to sweep away a spider web or use bug spray to remove the worm before it can eat the fruit. They’re nice additions that add to the variety of the gameplay, but could have easily been left out without hurting the final quality of the game.

With each level being timed, you earn funds depending on how quickly you can complete them. As you complete levels, you unlock upgrades for Alice’s garden, but these are standard items with no customization options. You simply head into the store, repeatedly click the “buy” button and then watch as the template flowers, trees and bushes appear in their set locations with no further interaction from you. It would have been great if we could customize each item that goes into the garden, a la Gardenscapes, but without this ability (not to mention the garden’s incredibly blurry graphics), the garden portion of the gameplay ultimately feels “tacked on” and can be easily forgotten.

6
Ultimately, Alice and the Magic Gardens contains some rather unique elements in the world of the match-three genre, so Alawar deserves credit for doing something new. That being said, if we could freely swap locker and fruit tiles with each other, the challenge of the game would still be there simply due to each level being timed. There didn’t need to be an additional challenge to make the gameplay fun, and in fact, it does more harm than good. Alice and the Magic Gardens is worth a trial, if you’re simply out of other good match-three games in your collection, but don’t be surprised if you come away disappointed.

Conclusion:
Lots of varied levels to complete, with many variations in goals. The game does suffer some what from blurry graphics. The fruit lockers mechanic is frustrating.

Whiterabbit-uk,

Free or Discounted Games:
Please check Delenn's threads over in the giveaway forums HERE (non-Steam games) and HERE (Steam games) for the latest freebies. It's kept up to date frequently, (thanks for keeping this up to date Delenn, very much appreciated).

Steam Games:
For the latest Steam sales check THIS Steam database site out. You can list the games in 'price' & 'percentage off' order by clicking the headers. If you link SteamDB (the Steam database) with your Steam account, all games that you already have will be highlighted in green and those in blue are on your wish list. When there are Steam games being given away, you'll see the percentage off as 100%. It's worth checking this regularly to make sure you don't miss the best deals and freebies. There is an early access game presently free on Steam called KEO (usually £9.99).

Delenn usually posts links to all free games within several hours of them going live, so check her links in the first paragraph above.

If you have a Steam account and like to collect soon to be removed games, there are at least four that I know of (thanks to Delenn) that are being removed soon. i.e. Gods Remastered (ENDS LATER TODAY a classic platformer from the early 90's that includes both the original and the remastered is being removed from Steam on the 27th March due to licensing issues. It's on sale with 90% off (£0.79/$0.99) until removal (a fantastic bargain) .

Knockout Checkers Chamber; has now been removed from Steam. I don't know of any other outlet that sells the game, but, if you still wanted the game, you may be able to find keys on the various Steam key sites, but there's no guarantee.

Three more games are being removed from Steam by the developer FarSky Interactive sometime in April; two are on sale for 70% off at the moment i.e. Far Sky and The free Ones. Sky Break is still full price, but we may see it reduced in a final sale before the games are removed?

If you've purchased any game that is later removed from the Steam store, you will still always be able to access it via your Steam library despite it no longer being available via Steam.
Indie Gala:
Don't forget to check Indie Gala's freebie section HERE, then click on the Showcase header, selecting freebies from the drop down menu; the most recent additions include:
1) ... Vroom Racing (Drive a Formula 1 car upon 18 worldwide tracks : Reach 380 Km/h and beat the ghost !)

2) ... Out of Puberty: Chapter 1 (graphic novel, contains adult themes and NOT suitable for children.)

3) ... Little Kite (ReRUN ... a point-and-click story driven adventure. This Game may contain content NOT appropriate for all ages)

4) ... Spring Bonus (NEW ... Match Three)

5) ... Unhack (NEW ... The 5K Worm is on a rampage across cyberspace. As the top unhacker in Smash Security, it is your mission to bring an end to this virus. Join forces with AI companion Weedy and become an unstoppable duo!)

6) ... Pixel Puzzles 2: Anime (NEW ... Jigsaw Puzzle)
Check the freebie section for the latest additions; if you've not visited for a while, also check the Showcase section for older freebies. All or most new freebies should be on the first page of the Showcase pages. We have been given over 340 games since I started to check the freebie section in 2018. But around 60% of those are no longer available free. The following recent freebies have now been removed from the free library: Last Dream, Trainpunk Run, Pixel Puzzles 2: Paintings, Hamsterdam, Copperbell, Chainsaw Warrior, Leisure Suit Larry 2 Looking For Love (In Several Wrong Places), Leisure Suit Larry 1 - In the Land of the Lounge Lizards , Figment, Pixel Puzzles 2: Space, Revolution Ace, Six Sides of the World, Byte Family, Alone on Mars, Garfield Kart, Nostradamus the Last Prophecy, Snowball, Pixel Puzzles 2: Christmas , Die Young (Full version), Distortions, Dino Run DX, Cheap Golf, Kill Em All, Dead Hungry Diner, and Contract with the Devil.

Any game you claim while it's being offered is DRM free and will remain in your Indie Gala library permanently (unless Indie Gala goes bust) and can be downloaded at any time, under the showcase or freebie section; 115 games are still available. Not all games that go into the showcase remain free and are removed after a short period; e.g. the recent adventure puzzler Figment that costs almost £15 on Steam; so, you should grab them as quickly as you can. To find your games go to your account and from the drop down menu select 'My Library'. When the page opens find the 'Showcase' button in the banner along the top of the page and, from the drop down menu select 'Showcase'. There are only 8 games per page, so, if like me you have added hundreds to your account/library. Each page from your free list can take 30 or more seconds to move to the next page so it can take a good twenty minutes to get to the last page depending on how many of the free games you've claimed.
CD Keys:
Another decent site that you should check out regularly is CD Key HERE. They have some very good discounts on top notch AAA games for all the popular platforms (PC, PSN, Xbox, Nintendo), sometimes as much as 99% off. for example Madden NFL 22 is only £0.39 (usually £49.99), Grand Theft Auto V Premium Ed' 84% off (£7.99), Sims 4 85% off (£5.99), Star Wars The Force Unleashed Ultimate Sith Edition £1.79 , Dying Light Platinum Edition 92% off (£5.29 - includes 22 of the paid for 26 DLC's, with a further 11 free DLC's available.), Assetto Corsa 83% off (£3.99), Borderlands 2 GOTY Edition 91% off (£2.99), Civilization VI Platinum Edition 91% off (£8.99), Cities Skyline 90% off (£3.09), Hitman GOTY Ed' 92% off (£3.99), Sniper Elite 4 83% off (£6.99), Stellaris 99% off (£0.19), The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series 86% off (£5.49), Battlefield V 85% off (£7.39), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 89% off (£0.79), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II : The Sith Lords 89% off (£0.79), Planet Coaster 83% off (£4.99), Injustice 2 92% off (£3.99), Kerbal Space Program 85% off (£4.49) this is included in the Stand with Ukraine bundle, Fallout 3 GOTY Ed' 80% off (£2.99), Fallout 4 91% off (£3.49), Tekken 7 90% off (£3.99), Garfield Kart: Furious Racing 92% off (£1.09), Dawn of War Franchise Pack 97% off (£3.19 usually £99), Assassins Creed: Unity 91% off (£3.49), Naruto to Boruto Shinobi Striker 95% off (£1.99), Ace Combat 7 Skies Unknown Deluxe Edition 86% off (£9.99), Outlast 2 90% off (£2.39), The Escapists 2 85% off (£2.99), Battlefield 1 Revolution 87% off (£7.99), Sniper 2: Ghost Warrior 2 89% off (£0.79), Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 Season Pass Edition 96% off (£1.49), Elite Dangerous 84% off (£3.99), Killing Floor 2 89% off (£2.29), Lego: The Incredibles 93% off (£2.49), Lego: DC Super Villains 93% off (£2.49), Resident Evil Biohazard 90% off (£4.99), Resident Evil HD Remaster 87% off (£3.19), Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 91% off (£4.99), The Evil Within 92% (£2.49), Metro Exodus Gold Edition 83% off (£9.99), Shadow warrior 2 90% off (£3.59), Warhammer 40 000 Space Marine - Anniversary Ed' 93% off (£2.99) plus many more amazing deals.

I've quoted prices from the UK pages of CD keys. I recently got an Origin key for Star Wars: Squadrons for 99% off, costing me £0.34; it usually retails for £34.99, I also got 32% off a pre order copy of Dying Light 2 a couple of weeks before it was released in February, saving around £20 off the release price.
Epic Games:
The latest Epic Game is called DEMON'S TILT a top down pinball game with SHMUP & Hack N' Slash elements (excellent take on Pinball).

Next Thursday 31th March we will be given City of Brass - a first-person action adventure from senior BioShock developers. Armed with scimitar and a versatile whip, you’ll lash and slash, bait and trap your way to the heart of an opulent, Arabian Nights-themed metropolis – or face certain death as time runs out and even better Total War: WARHAMMER - The critically-acclaimed Total War: WARHAMMER combines a turn-based campaign of epic empire-building with colossal and explosive real-time battles, set within the incredible world of Warhammer Fantasy Battles; (it's not my favorite Total War title, but still excellent game play)
Indie Bundles:
The best Indie Bundles sites that have been operating from around 2010 are the Humble Bundle and Indie Gala sites (though the latter isn't as good as it used to be, with most of the bundles containing cheap stocking fillers and a lot of 'adult only 'hentai like ' games). The Humble site is, in my opinion, the best; though a more recent addition that is worth checking out called Fanatical games, that used to be called Bundle Stars, looks to be a serious contender for that title as they have some very good bundles. Presently Fanatical hosts fifteen bundles:

Mystery Bounty Bundle
Diamond Collection: Build your own Bundle
Killer Bundle 21
Platinum Collection: Build your own Bundle March
Build your own All Stars 4 Bundle
Guardian Bundle 6
Build your own Spring Bundle
Journey Bundle
RPG Maker Bundle
Build your own Backstage Bundle
Kings & Queens Bundle
Grey Alien Games Bundle
Build your own Anime Bundle
Build your own Ultimate VR Bundle 2
Indie Must Play Bundle

You can find the Fanatical bundles page HERE.

The latest Humble Choice bundle went live Tue 1st March; it includes seven Steam games and one Origin game. Desperados III, Mass Effect Legendary Edition (Origin), Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan, Red Solstice 2: Survivors, Nebuchadnezzar, Police Stories and Evan's Remains. Subscriptions to the Choice bundle have recently been changed, levelling the ground for all subscribers. The monthly cost is a meagre $12/£8.99 with other benefits such as access to a lot of indie titles for free while subscribed and a percentage off other purchases from the Humble store. This discount increases the longer you stay subscribed up to a year with 20% off all none bundle purchases. (1 month sub' gives 10% off, 3 months sub' gives 15% off and six months sub 'gives 17% off). The next Humble Choice bundle goes live Tuesday 5th April 22.

The latest Humble Bundles include the following:

!) ... Europa Universalis IV: The Complete Collection Contains the base game plus 32 DLC's for £15.20 usually costs £390.89 (ends 13th April)

2) ... The Ultimate Racing Sim Bundle that includes Assetto Corsa Competizione, DRIFT 21, Automobilista 2, iRacing (3-month Subscription New Memberships Only), Assetto Corsa Ultimate Edition, rFactor 2, NASCAR Heat 5 Ultimate Edition, Automobilista; plus, discount coupons for a couple of steering wheel controllers i.e. Thrustmaster T248 and Thrustmaster T150 - the coupons are only redeemable in the US while supplies last! (ends 30th March )

Free Game Project:
I've restarted a project I originally started back in 2008 that used to be called Good Games to Grab, where I posted free games over in the forums on a daily basis; however, I won't be posting them daily this time, only as and when I have time and the inclination. You can find the new forum section entitled 'Free Game Project' HERE. So far, I've posted eight excellent PC games, plus one android game as well as suggested or linked to others similar to the ones posted. I'll be adding more as and when I have the time or the mood takes me over the coming months.

Amazon Prime Gaming:
If you have Amazon Prime you also get access to a new set of free games every month. The March freebies include an Origin code for 'Madden NFL 22', and 'Surviving Mars' on Epic Games (this has been given away twice via Epic a few years ago on the 10th October 2019 together with a couple of the DLC and again on the 11th March last year; if you missed it both times here's your chance to finally grab the base game). There are also some downloadable games and a whole bunch of in game content for lots of big name games like League of Legends, GTA V, Red Dead Online, Dead by Daylight, Destiny 2, Battlefield 2042 and loads more. Visit Prime Gaming for details.
Other Free or Discounted Games:
Black And White Apocalypse that was given away mid January (HERE) by the developer Hammergames is always free via Itch.io and can also be downloaded as a colour version. You can find both versions via the following links Black & White version, and Coloured version. :) Hammergames also offer other games they have created free HERE. Some of them look like they are worth investigating. :)

Stay safe everyone.

I finally managed to get the game to work after several attempts. Firstly, if you turn on full screen mode, you are lost and must uninstall, otherwise you will not be able to do the compatibility setting again. So reinstalled and let the settings select Windows 8 first, then the second time let the high resolution display be selected. But the playing field is now very small, so now you have to adjust the resolution., in my case from 2560x1440 to 1024x768, so that the display becomes large enough.
The game itself is a bit special, because you have to match not only the symbols, but also the free space (three shades of blue), never using symbols and free space at the same time. Besides the horizontal and vertical matches, the triangle is also a valid match!.
Good luck!
Peter

Hi,

It looked good like another game I played from this site, but its too buggy! Since I haven't had time to download or play in awhile, I was disappointed. I downloaded it to Samsung notebook 10. I am thinking it probably plays better on older versions.

I did originally get a black screen and later a white screen after viewing the menu. My 'fix' was to open Task Manager both times and clicked on the game there and it appeared. The game did change my desktop enlarging it. I am not positive, but think I did play this in the past. If I recall correctly the play was very easy and think I finished it in a couple of days. I had to click on things a few times before they worked. The graphics are good and the music good. I had to go to the menu and looks at the options, when I returned to the game, the sound came on. It did not originally when playing.

Nice to see you White Rabbit. Hope all well! and thanks for the info, I did not know Amazon gives away games!

Hope all have a great week and thank you!

Lee C.,

Hi Lee, thank you for your feedback, appreciated. Yes, Amazon have been giving away games for quite some time. At the beginning of each moth they change the offerings; there's usually at least one or two big name games offered, plus several other smaller titles. Plus, DLC's or add-ons for various other games. It's well worth checking each month. You've only got a few more days to claim the Madden NFL 2022 game from Origin. you get a code from amazon, which you redeem via your Origin account. If you don't have Origin, you'll need to download the client and create a free account.

You'll find Origin HERE and Amazon Gaming HERE. It always opens to the addon page. Click on the tab that says Games, to see what games are available. If you have an Amazon Prime account, just sign into Amazon Gaming with your Prime log in to gain access.

Lee C.,

Yes, I got it to work by clicking the games exe via Task manager. As you said, it opens into a small window. , I then right clicked on the desktop to change my monitors resolution settings (temporarily); changing it to 800 x 600. This expanded the window almost to full screen size. At least I can now check out the game. Pity it's almost ended today.

I too got the white screen (Win 10 Pro 64bit). Running it in Win8 compatibility mode got me the not-full-screen version, but changing it in Options to full screen got me the white screen again, so now I can't change it back. Alternatively, Gametop.com has Fruit Lockers Reborn, which works for me in full-screen mode, but it's not exactly the same game. The mechanics are the same, but no Alice, and I don't know if you're rebuilding gardens or not.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the GOTD game, but the uninstall apparently didn't clear the settings/options file where I'd set it to full-screen mode before, and I don't know where that file is located, so I guess I'll stick with Fruit Lockers for now...

Whiterabbit-uk,

You'll either find it in the documents folder, within the hidden folder called Appdata (in one of the three folders within the appdata folder) or in the registry. If searching the registry you'll need to bring up the registry editor which can be found by typing regedit in the search filed. I'd make a back up if you decide to edit the registry. Once opened, click on the edit command then click on 'Find' from the drop down menu. Type in the name of the game, then click on find next. You can delete any reference to the game.

I've edited the registry countless times and have never had an issue, but it still pays to make a backup, just in case you accidentally delete something other than the hive entries related to the game.

For those that have been playing it, did you have any trouble with white screen? For those that did get white screen, were you able to fix the problem and play the game? If so, how?

Goupil, I had the same problem on both of my computers - desktop and laptop. Desktop is running Windows 11 home 64 bit, laptop Windows 10, pro 64 bit. I uninstalled them both as it's hard to play a white screen game!! :D It's too bad, because I've been waiting for a Match-3 game.

free game :(

Reply   |   Comment by Pan Pikus  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-11)

Pan Pikus,

Hi Pan Pikus,

It's actually a shareware title, but sites like TooMKY games add adware so that when you play the game you are redirected to the TooMKY site where advertising earns the distributor and the developer money and is why it's downloaded for free. Technically it is not freeware.

The giveaway version has had most of the adware removed from the installation. You will still get your browser opening to TooMky Games home page when you close the game down, but this is a small price to pay for getting the game gratis. There is no malware added to your computers system; whatever adware is still left in the game is confined to the games installed folder and will never affect your computer. This is the reason why these free game sites like TooMKY games, FreeGamePick, Gametop and MyPlayCity (MPC) have been able to survive for so long. If actual malware was common to any of these sites, they wouldn't last very long. MPC and Gametop have been around for over fifteen years.

Whiterabbit-uk,

Previously until a few weeks ago, the Toomky Games ONLY opened the browser to the Toomky website just one single time when you initially installed the game, not also every time you closed the game as well... until this game today.

I realise the owners of GOTD don'y generally tell you anything about what's going on with regard to them organising the games that they make available, but I was thinking... as we haven't had any major type Toomky or MyPlayCity Games for the past few weeks now, maybe this could possibly be the reason. That Toomky Games have been insisting on keeping that extra 'closing down the game' redirect to their website within the copy of the games they're supplying to GOTD to receive additional promotional awareness of their site... and it's taken a few weeks for both parties to reach an agreement on this. What do you think? At least a possibility maybe?

Anyway Stephen, it was just a thought that went through my mind as to why we haven't receiveed any Tomky Games these past weeks.

Keep safe, and if you do go out in public please make sure to continue to wear a mask for the time being, despite it being a slight hassle to do so!

Kindest regards,

Drew.

(From 'Down Under' in Aus.)

P.S. Another wonderful review btw. We all appreciate the effort you continue to put in, and all those screenshots really help us to decide whether it's a game we'll enjoy or not :)
