Giveaway of the Day - Turtle Lu

Turtle Lu
July 1, 2012

Day after day, Lu watched creepy little caterpillars crawl past his window. Like the pitter patter of birds on a tin roof, the squirming sensation of moles crawling under the floor. Lu lay down with the sunset every night, and awoke to the cock-a-doodle doo of the rooster outside every morning.

Lu curled up in his shell and fell into a long, deep sleep. Winter was as it always is, and soon the first rays of the sun broke through the dirty, cobwebbed window.

Opening his heavy eyes as he crept outside his house, he was in for a big surprise. The little caterpillars had grown into giant, dangerous Monsters! Huge, angry bees circled around his home, stingers ready to well, sting! Mad urchins darted from house to house, destroying everything in their paths with fearsome needles! “This outrage must be stopped!” Lu exclaimed as he set out on his perilous journey…

  1. Introduction:

Description: Day after day, Lu watched creepy little caterpillars crawl past his window. Everywhere. Like the pitter patter of birds on a tin roof, the squirming sensation of moles crawling under the floor. The days flew by, each like the one before, monotonous. Lu lay down with the sunset every night, and awoke to the cock-a-doodle doo of the rooster outside every morning. The months passed by, the spring rain, autumn sun, leaves of fall and now…snow is falling on the roof. Lu curled up in his shell and fell into a long, deep sleep. Winter was as it always is, and soon the first rays of the sun broke through the dirty, cobwebbed window. “It looks like it’s time to wake up ” he thought, opening his heavy eyes. As he crept outside his house, he was in for a big surprise. The little caterpillars had grown into giant, dangerous Monsters! Huge, angry bees circled around his home, stingers ready to…well, sting! Mad urchins darted from house to house, destroying everything in their paths with fearsome needles! “This outrage must be stopped!” Lu exclaimed as he set out on his perilous journey…

Turtle Lu – A colorful, neat platformer with nice graphics. Dangerous enemies await you, along with striking music and novel adventures.

    Installation:

The downloaded zip file is 56.3 MB in size and unpacks to a ‘read me’ document that give you the ‘terms and conditions’ and information about installation plus a dual activation and set up module. The installed game is 67.2MB in size. If you are new to the game giveaway project all you ‘usually’ have to do is double click (unless you’ve set the clicks to single click) on the module and it’ll install and activate automatically. The game installs to the path below.

    C:\Games\TurtleLu

However, during the installation wizards progress you are given the opportunity to select your own installation path if you wish; (it’s highly recommended, especially if you have a second HDD or a partitioned drive as it will help to keep your system running smoothly – the more you fill your root drive (usually the C: drive), the slower your computer will run – if you’ve got a decent sized hard drive of more than a few hundred Gigabytes it’s always a good idea to partition it into at least two drives so that you can keep the operating system and other essential applications separate from other programs and games.

There is no shortcut installed nor a Start menu/Programs list shortcut or an uninstaller so, make sure you make a note of where it’s installed to so that you can create your own shortcut. If you decide the game isn’t for you, you’ll need to manually remove it.

My Vista computer is unavailable at the moment and when trying to play the game on my Win 7 64 bit computers I get the following error message, so am unable to make a full review.

    The Game:

Here we have a new (ish) turtle game released in 2011 and here on the giveaway site for the first time. Oddly it says it’s free on the developers site. Not sure whether that’s true as yet as its quoted as being $6.99 in the info panel at the top of the giveaway page.:

If so you’ll be seeing this over in the forums in the free games project soon. :)

Here’s a review from Software informer written by Ashley Griggs 6 months ago

Turtle Lu is a game for kids where your goal is to guide the turtle through a breathtaking journey and collect as many coins as you can. Each level will bring you all kinds of enemies, like caterpillars, bees, mice, etc., which you need to avoid in order to stay alive.

The interface is simple and interactive, kids will definitely enjoy its amazing visual effects and nicely drawn characters. During gameplay, you can listen the dazzling music and funny sound effects that come with the application. You can always disable these sound settings in Options.

      PicDepict.com

The storyline evolves around a small turtle that embarks on an adventurous journey where it will have to face dangerous enemies, such as caterpillars, bees, mice, etc. The more coins you collect, the bigger your final score will get.

A disadvantage of this game are the control keys, as you won’t be able to change them.

Each level is won when you reach the magical gate and your progress is automatically saved. You will only have 5 lives at hand, so be careful not get injured by your enemies.

Briefly, it’s worth trying Turtle Lu, a free and funny adventure game which comes with breathtaking challenges and colorful graphics.

    System Requirements:

Operating system Microsoft Windows 98, ME, XP, Vista, Win7- Pentium 3 and above- 256 MB RAM- Video card with 32 MB memory- The sound device compatible with DirectX 7- DirectX 7

    Conclusion:

Oddly, this game worked when I first tried it back in February when it was first put into the giveaway listings, but now it won’t work on my Win 7 computers. My win XP/Vista dual boot system is offline at the moment. I had some blue screen problems yesterday, and have taken it offline for a service so can’t confirm whether it works on those platforms.

    Suggestions and Help

If you have any problems running the game please refer to the FAQ’s over in the forums. You can access the FAQ’s via the following link:

    http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/11647

Also, if you post late in the day you are less likely to get a response from the community so it’s a good idea to post over in the forums as well. You’ll find a post specific to this game HERE. hopefully someone will reply with advice and or suggestions.

Alawar’s free game of the month is still Land of Runes and Realore has a pre release alpha to test so again no free game this week.

Steams weekend deal is every game in the Warhammer 40 000 Dawn of War and Space Marine franchise. With 75% off all games and DLC here’s your chance to get all of the series. The latest game is in the third person and in my opinion a big improvement on earlier games (though I love those too). There’s 75% off all three of the Penny Arcade: Precipice of Darkness episodes (excellent Point & Click adventures). The 24 hour deal is Governor of Poker 2 Premium Edition with 50% off. You can find all of the deals on Steam as well as Gamestop, Gamersgate and GOG via the didimatic site:

    http://didimatic.com/dd/en/about/

You’ll also find details of all of the Indie Game bundles (Indie Gala VI, BeMine 3 and Gamersgates Indiefort bundles) over in the Game Discussion forums:

    http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/forum/17

There’s only one day left for the gamergate bundle which ends on Monday. The other two have several days to run yet.

There’s hundreds of arcade games available from sites like Gametop and MyPlayCity but please note that if you get any games from them you need to watch out for toolbar installations and home page hijacks. Just un-check the check boxes. with MPC games you may need to do this every time you boot a game up unless you create a new shortcut from the installed executable.

    A Request for help:

Developers rely on good feedback to improve their games. If you download this game please take some time once you’ve played it a while to leave some constructive feedback either positive or negative. The more constructive feedback we get, the more likely developers are going to give more games away. The giveaway site already has a very good standing with the search engines. Developers want their products out there on the WWW, this site has the potential to do that. The game giveaway project gives away on average between 9 to 17 thousand downloads for each game depending upon what genre and how obscure the game is. That’s a lot of homes these games are being downloaded into and a lot of ‘potential’ cash that’s being lost by the developers. If we get better games because of better feedback, the community are likely to continue to benefit from the generosity of the developers. Satisfied community members are then more likely to visit the home sites of those developers and purchase games that they may not have bothered with before they discovered the developer via the game giveaway site, thus giving the developers more incentives to give away even more decent games.

Please leave some feedback once you’ve checked the game out. It can be positive or negative, but please explain what your reasons were for the feedback you post. You could also leave suggestions for improving the game, for example, this game could do with more block types for the levels editor, add more power-ups, describing the ones you think would be suitable, add some mini games (which seem all the rage in some arcade games now) or enable the user to be able to change the in game music easily.

Thank you in advance to all those who take the time to post a constructive comment.

    Regards

    Whiterabbit aka Stephen

  2. Avast stops me on link to game homepage as a reported attack site, is this link ok ?

    ……………………..Moderator Comment……………………..

The game has been checked using several different security software’s and is clean. As mentioned countless times, there has never been a game given away on this site since it’s inception back in 2006.

As for the various developers sites I can’t speak for those. Sites are apparently under constant attack. Please quote which software you are using as it could just be an overly sensitive AV software that’s giving you the warning, whereas if all or most AV software’s give the same message (or similar) there very well could be a problem. Also mention whether it’s the free version you are using or a subscribed version. Thank you.
