  1. Installation:

The game downloads to a 14.9Mb zip file that unpacks to a dual activation and set up module and a read me document. The document states the terms and conditions of the game giveaway as ell as basic installation information. The zip file is larger than it was lat time, but this is because the wrapper has been updated to include the Themida software protection. You can read a discussion of this in the forums via the following link:

The game installs to the following path by default

but you can change the installation path during the installation wizard by adding Arcanorum to the path:

As with all Wheemplay games the executable installs directly to the games folder as opposed to installing via a folder. There are no shortcuts installed and no uninstaller. The installed game is 12MB in size. If you want to delete the game just delete the executable found at the above path.

Arcanorum was originally given away last April 20011. It scored quite poorly despite me giving it a 7 out of 10; only scoring a positive 38% out of 276 votes with 30 comments from the community most of which were quite positive. Only a few actually said they didn’t like the game; some had problems controlling the game and a couple had problems installing. You can read all of the previous comments via the following link:

You can check the game out online to see if you think you’ll like it:

or watch a You Tube video of game play via the following link:

Arcanorum looks like a direct rip off of Hammerfight, which was released a couple of years ago, though it looks a little rough around the edges compared to the more polished Hammerfight. I posted a demo link for Hammerfight in the forums during it’s beta phase. You can check that game out via the following link (demo link available on the home page):

Arcanorum is one epic fighting game once you get the hang of its physics and the control of your upgradeable steam punk machine!

    •Awesome battle sound effects!

•More than 25 incredibly addictive levels

    •Achievements and high scores

•Create and share your levels with friends! (Not sure about this one. It’s not found in the main menu. Possibly once you’ve finished all levels it will unlock???)

    The Game:

Last time this was given away I just listed the main points. There’s no reason to change the format this time.

    • You can upgrade your ship and weapons via the shop. There are 10 different ship and 26 weapons to purchase, though most are locked at the beginning of the game. As you progress through the levels you will unlock more ships and weapons.

    • The first level is a tutorial which walks you through the various stages

    • Each level is introduced by a short story with a title, for example Chapter I is called ‘The Training Camp’ and Chapter 2 is called ‘Meeting the Verears’.

    • When an enemy is destroyed a bonus may fall from it, which you need to catch. These include shields that give you invulnerability health and luck, (the latter gives you a better chance of hitting your opponent or scoring more points)

    • Points equate to cash which can then be spent in the shop to upgrade your ship and weapons

    • You keep all points even if you lose and have to restart a level

    • There are two modes – Campaign where you work through the available levels and Survival that sends a waves of enemy at you. Survival ends when you are destroyed

    • Each survival level ends with a boss fight

    • You can’t hit friendly forces – you can distinguish a friendly force from an opfor (opposing force) by the color of the crystal that dangles from the base of their ship. Friendly forces are blue and enemies are red.

    • The game auto saves in campaign mode but not in survival. Though if you end the game part way through a level it will only save to the beginning of the level

    • You can replay previous levels unless you start a new game. However this will wipe any progress from previous games, including all the upgrades you’ve purchased.

    • There is only one profile available – suggestion, if you want multiple profiles copy the installed executable and then rename, so that you can have multiple games one each for your family. :)

    • Options are basic, with only sound and music sliders.

    • You earn money by hitting your opponent

    • To play on full screen click on the maximize button to the top right of the window.

    • You can swap between purchased weapons, but you have to visit the shop to do this.

    • Problems – Items in shop disappear when you play on full screen

You can check out a slide show of about 90 images via the following link. Images show the first few stages with all the story screens and a few screens from the survival mode.

Overall Arcanorum is a decent flash game, it just worries me that it’s a virtual rip off of Hammerfight. Apart from the fact that Hammerfight is a much more polished game. Even the physics are the same and the designs of the ships similar. Hammerfight has much better graphics, but then it isn’t a flash based game. That said Arcanorum still has reasonable graphics and game play that’ll keep you entertained for short periods. I don’t think it’s a game you’d spend hours playing, partly because of the repetitive nature of the combat, which is basically swinging various weapons that you have to purchase using the money you’ve earned from destroying ships in previous levels. The swinging action can feel rather sluggish at first, but power ups and rewards later in the game will help to improve the game play. You’ll probably need to practice a little to get the hang of the swinging motion. Imagine using a morning star in combat; you need to time your swings just right to get the maximum benefit from the swing.

Overall (despite the copying) this game is worth a good 7 out of 10, that’s 7 for game play, graphics sound and re-playability. 😆

    Suggestions and Help

If you have any problems running the game please refer to the FAQ’s over in the forums. You can access the FAQ’s via the following link:

Also, if you post late in the day you are less likely to get a response from the community so it’s a good idea to post over in the forums as well. You’ll find a post specific to this game HERE. hopefully someone will reply with advice and or suggestions.

Alawar’s free game of the month is Magic Shop and Realore has a pre release alpha to test so again no free game this week.

Steams weekend deal is Wargame: European Escalation with 50% off plus free DLC; theres also 50% off the two Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 DLC’s (Collection 1 & 2) as well as 50% off all DLC for the Call of Duty Black Ops as well. The 24 hour deal is Wizorb with 50% off. You can find all of the deals on Steam as well as Gamestop, Gamersgate and GOG via the didimatic site:

You’ll also find details of all of the Indie Game bundles over in the Game Discussion forums:

There’s hundreds of arcade games available from sites like Gametop and MyPlayCity but please note that if you get any games from them you need to watch out for toolbar installations and home page hijacks. Just un-check the check boxes. with MPC games you may need to do this every time you boot a game up unless you create a new shortcut from the installed executable.

    A Request for help:

Developers rely on good feedback to improve their games. If you download this game please take some time once you’ve played it a while to leave some constructive feedback either positive or negative. The more constructive feedback we get, the more likely developers are going to give more games away. The giveaway site already has a very good standing with the search engines. Developers want their products out there on the WWW, this site has the potential to do that. The game giveaway project gives away on average between 9 to 17 thousand downloads for each game depending upon what genre and how obscure the game is. That’s a lot of homes these games are being downloaded into and a lot of ‘potential’ cash that’s being lost by the developers. If we get better games because of better feedback, the community are likely to continue to benefit from the generosity of the developers. Satisfied community members are then more likely to visit the home sites of those developers and purchase games that they may not have bothered with before they discovered the developer via the game giveaway site, thus giving the developers more incentives to give away even more decent games.

Please leave some feedback once you’ve checked the game out. It can be positive or negative, but please explain what your reasons were for the feedback you post. You could also leave suggestions for improving the game, for example, this game could do with more block types for the levels editor, add more power-ups, describing the ones you think would be suitable, add some mini games (which seem all the rage in some arcade games now) or enable the user to be able to change the in game music easily.

Thank you in advance to all those who take the time to post a constructive comment.

  2. The “installer” appears to be a WinRar-created self-extracting archive, but it refuses to extract, giving me this error:

The archive is either in unknown format or damaged

I’ve never had this problem with one of these WinRar files here before, so I assume this is yet another problem caused by the new, more draconian GAOTD wrapper.

    ……………………Moderator comment………………….

Try using 7 Zip. I did post a FAQ about this over in the forums, which was referenced in my review above.

  3. Great, now the Games Giveaway site is using the godawful new Themida-based wrapper as well.

Even after rebooting yet again so Themida will let me actually attempt to run the installation program (which is actually just a self-extracting Rar archive), this is refusing to install for me, displaying

    Extracting files to c:\Games folder
The archive is either in unknown format or damaged

presumably because the new “protection” is preventing the WinRar stub from reading the file.

What’s particularly idiotic about this is that the wrapper is utterly pointless in this case since, as I said, the supposed installer is just a self-extracting Rar archive, so you could “install” it as many times as you want in the future simply by making a copy of the extracted files anyway.

    ………………………..Moderator comment…………………….

Please read my comment above re unwrapping the zip file. :) If you do continue to have this problem, you can play this game online for free.

If many more giveaway users continue to have problems with this new wrapper the team may review its use, but please don’t quote me 😉
