I received the "unable to set graphics mode" error. Tried different compatability modes and checked out the ini files to see if I could modify anything to no avail. Xp sp2, intel duel core, 2 gigs ram, nvidia graphics.

Agree w/ commentors suggesting TrackMania - except I disagree with the "just for serious gamers" opinion. TrackMania hasquickly spread thru my family from teenagers to my aunt and uncle. All enjoy it, no matter their experience as a gamer. Make sure you are looking for "TrackMania Nations Forever" as this is the completely free version - and a rare correction to Whiterabbit: we play single player mode on TMNF all the time, although the game does need an internet connection. You can, but do not have to, play against others. But you get close-to-realtime ranking both in the solo campaigns and PVP,broken down by world, country and, in our case, State. (i'm in the top 200 in Tennessee!! LOL at myself) If you do race PVP you will be racing against e-drivers from around the globe.

I almost forgot the track editor! Geez, this is our favorite part. Comes with the funnest (is that a word?) stadium track builder I've ever played with, though the menus don't have text and you have to figure out the track section categories yourself.

Can you tell I love TMNF? I think anyone looking for a racing game will.

Oh, as for *this* software: Vista and then my malware scanner in turn both balked at the memory allocation and I couldn't get it to run successfully. Didn't risk the laptop to try it on XP.

I must agree with Renegade.. Trackmania is much better, in graphics and in controls (which you can adjust too!!). Graphics in ROTLR are miserable. Changing them immediately slows the game, while graphics still aren't good! No uninstaller, shame on the developers...!!!
Installing is easy, but no button in the program folder. If youé a beginner in racing games, it's not a good game because off the controls, and it takes some time to find how to shift gears (which is not possible, only the TAB button to make power boost (unnoticable, by the way) For experienced racers there are much better alternatives...
Anyway, uncompareable to need 4 speed nor to trackmania, which is free!!

Thanks also to the people who posted links to freeware games. I always save the freeware links too!

game downloaded, installed and activated just fine, even though the install process leaves a lot to be desired. just extracting to a folder and then not having any sort of start menu entry or desktop icon is in this day and age unforgivable. now to the game.
what a truly awful mess, the car control either with arrow or mouse is woeful, the game sounds are terrible and the graphics and reminiscent of the early 90's. This game is not worth the download and lasted 1 race on my computer before it was deleted.

Thanks Brian, I stand corrected. you have no need to apologise. I was wrong. The game can indeed be controlled by the mouse. Why I thought it wasn't I don't know. In actual fact, it is easier to play using the mouse, though I found I still used the forward arrow for the acceleration.

Sorry to mislead everyone, and sorry for the multiple posts.

(I don't suppose one of the moderators could combine the last three posts, thank you.

I need to get to bed early tonight so have posted Mondays Free game ove rin the forums a little early. I will be posting each new game at around midnight at the start of the new day. That is GMT, so for example it will be 7pm on the Eastern board in the US.

Anyway Monday's game is called Championship Pool, a Sega emulated game from the early 90's. You can find a lot more details and the link to the download page by following the link below:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/3856#post-41630

I would really appreciate some feedback from the community as I don't want to be spending an inordinate amount of time searching for these games if they are not goto be wanted. So please leave our comments about each days games so that I can get an idea as to what the community wants and also to see if it's worth carrying on with the project. :)

regards

Stephen

p.s.

With respect to today's game. I know a lot of commuity members have expressed their distain for it; however, if you are willing to spend a little time practicing, the controls should no longer pose a problem and you can then start to enjoy playing the game. I tried my X-Box controller, but unfortunately it wouldn't work, though I do use a Wof King gaming keyboard that works just fine and I actually founfd it easier to control the movement of my car using it instead of a standard keyboard. The Wolf King uses a usb as opposed to a PS2 socket. I would definitely advise that you find a suitable camera mode F1 through to F7 I found the default one was rather off-putting because it seems to move around instead of remaining stationary.

Have a great week

The game is fun as a simple arcade type game, however, the camera/view moving side to side as you are steering through the corners is very anoying. At times, it's impossible to see the car on the track, because the angle of the camera is looking at the side of the car at ground level. I'm used to Forza 2 type games on the xbox 360 and this one is not in that league. Fix the cameras and give it mouse support and that would really help.

I agree with most of the comments posted here however..

If a racing game is easy, it gets boring fast. If it is hard it gets frustrating until you master it, that is if you care to spend the time to learn it. To have the perfect equilibrium is a very difficult task.

I am not saying this game has achieved said equilibrium. To me, the fact that it is hard to play is a promising point unless, of couse, it is the result of a bad idea or bad implementation of a good idea. I can't say if today's game is good or bad until I play it at length unless I get frustrated enough to erase it.

If anybody here has played XBox's Moto GP they'll know what I am talking about. It took me days to learn to drive those bikes, but when I did, I swear that it felt like I was driving one.

A few of people complain about lack of mouse or gamepad controls. There are many joystick and gamepads that are fully programmable. That means that you can map ANY key from the keyboard to gamepad controls.

My choice is the Saitek P2600 rumble. It has a button called FPS that maps the usual wasd into the gamepad and the right joystick is converted to a mouse at the hardware level. It has worked in all the games I played. The level of programming in this pad is amazing. You can make it do different things depending on how hard you press its buttons (they are all analog). I don't remember, but its price was like $20.

With pads like this it makes no difference whether games are keyboard only pr not.

Oh and I wanted to mention a different racing game I found last night called CrazyKart found at either these links:

http://www.zapak.com/crazykart.zpk

I haven't tried it yet, so I can't tell much about it, but it looks very interesting.

To Stephen (White Rabbit):

Sorry to correct you, but the game can be controlled with the mouse as well as the keyboard, although, it's a lot harder. Mousepads just aren't wide enough for as much room as you need to use the mouse on this game. Also, even though driving with the mouse does work, there's a longer responsivetime than playing with the keyboard.

Also, I didn't try using the number pad, but to make it easier to those who are interested, WASD keys can be used instead of the arrow keys if you prefer.

Either way, this game still moved really slow on my computer. Just thought I'd throw that in there.

My comments about yesterday's offering also applies to this one. Some Company and Fly Games are both awful publishers. None of their games are worth the time to download and install. The only good thing that can be said for their games is the installition process. Or lack of one. The games are just extracted from the zip file to a folder of your choice. That makes it so easy to get rid of it. Just delete the folder or better yet shred/erase. Thank you GGAOTD but I will pass. Would love to see the return of Alawar. That is a publisher that knows how to put together a good game.

Hmm, another cheap game. No installer, just a Winrar SFX. Didn't work for me in a virtual machine (although some more graphics intensive games run correctly), so didn't test.
I don't like racing games anyway, so I will pass today and wait for another games weekend.

It's adequate. I like that it's hard to crash so bad that you start over. I think I'll let my 3-yr old try it. She might like it.
I would have liked my generic USB steering wheel (or a gamepad) to have worked.

Am sooooo interested that a person I never met and never will has announced that he/she has not tried racing games for a while, but may in the future decicde to.

So typical of the USELESS comments often posted here. Can't even wait five minutes to try the thing and maybe THEN give your report.

Ok Guys I've had time to play it a bit....... This game is not in the same league as any NFS, and no matter what you use as a controller the car will respond in its own way, and is as slow as the second comming... No matter how skilled a gamer you are, the sound is so bad its better to switch it off, I cant convince anyone to keep it on our computer Thanks GOTD Guys but this one's not a keeper

Ok from a girl's point of view. The game took FOREVER to download (like 5 hours) It works on Vista Home Premium and IBM Thinkpad Laptop with 256MB of video and 1Gig Ram.

You cant use a gamepad and when you switch the controller to push-button mouse its a lot easier, (Its a pity you cant use a game controller) The cars are all the same speed but its a fun game and I liked it and have already gotten good laptime

Its a nice game and I'd consider buying it, if they added a way to use a controller or steering wheel rather than the up/down/left/right arrows and spacebar for the handbreak

To all the whiners....... its free, if you dont like it use controlpanel to uninstall it

@ #31, Wayne (and anyone with the same desire):
"gamepad support would help here"
Get Xpadder.
With that program, you can control almost any game with your gamepad. Even when games do not support gamepads by themselves.

However, with this game; even with a gamepad, the gameplay is still horrible.
