Whiterabbit - I don't download a lot of games, but I check the site every weekend and always look for your post first. I think you do a fabulous job - it's just a pity some people don't think before they type!! Keep up the great work - there are lots of us here who really appreciate it.

A challenge...

All of the levels are to easy to beat...

I wasn't challenged at all...

Except by the bad graphics and idiotic game play...

but I still didn't lose a life...

It might be a challenge if you have both hands tied behind your back and have to play using your nose...

Just a quick note. I enjoyed it but found it a bit boring and repetitive. Not hard to play and not that easy but probably not a huge hours long rpg either. A 7/10 for me. I'll play it for a while.

And thanks to Stephen for his great reviews. Even though I don't always agree with the ratings they are always very much appreciated and indeed this one was really spot on. A 10/10 for his review =)

I recently experienced this game and had a great time wandering around it. Its like the Narnia adventure with the dwarf.

This is nice, simple little arcade game but while installing it may give you an error and you will have to re-install it again. he options menu allows you to adjust the quality of the graphics and the level of blood. By default, these are set to their lowest settings, so I’d boost them up to full if you want to enjoy the best looking graphics, though there didn’t appear to be much of a difference when using this facility. Perhaps for those with slow computers this may be useful?

You can earn up to five lives in game. When you are killed you get a message saying “You’ve Been Beaten – Now you will be resurrected” This will depend upon how many lives you have left, which are indicated at the bottom left of the screen next to the life force and mana level indicators.

Tried 3 times, but game crashes after opening screen on filename "dsfoggdemux2.dll". No idea what that file is or where it is, but it is not in the game folder. Oh well. Hopefully a good game that I will be able to run will be offered tomorrow.

Thanks to Stephen (Whiterabbit) for your always thorough and unbiased reviews, no matter WHAT the game is, and I appreciate your personal rating at the end. Even if the game isn't that much of a kick, I get one out of reading your reviews. Luv ya!

And to Kev #18: the only people who feel superior enough to tell others to "get a life" are usually in dire need of one themselves. I feel sorry for ya, dude.

drats. I was so hoping it was another of the Brave Dwarves games we got last year. Those were awesome and I replay them often.

Love last week's Around the World in 80 Days though. Got to the 78th day and seem to be quite stuck LOL. Another awesome game. Thanks so much!

Oh! And I had posted that Golden Prague from 2 weekends ago was crashing ... The trick seems to be not to try to speed up the beginning credits by clicking your mouse. If you let it completely load on its own, it loads great and the game is now one of my favorites. Great graphics!

Kev comment #18; if I was able to have a life following some jerk smashing into the back of me at speed while I happily cycled to work, then I'd probably not be spending my time writing these reviews. As it is I'm virtually house bound, and writing them actually takes my mind off the constant pain I'm in (despite taking morphine). It's another reason why I spend so much time playing games.

Stephen

There are different scenes - I'm surprised at the length of your report given you hadn't got up to the next scene as it really isn't that long.

The left click does a direct attack for killing single enemies, the right click fires a bomb which damages an area, or group of enemies. Use W,A,S,D to move around - dodge your enemies (especially the ranged attacks later in the level), run around them to group them up then launch bombs at them to take them down quickly. Also, get the powerups that drop.
Point and click (left for single targets, right for groups) to aim your ranged attacks at the enemies.

Roxie, if you allowed the game to be installed to the default position, then just go to C:\games and look for the Brave Dwarf folder; then delete it. That's it. There are virtually no registry entries, so I wouldn't bother going there.

Has anyone discovered whether this game does branch out into different scenes? Are there save points? From looking at the menu, it would seem so because it says continue.... if not I agree with Mike and Geek Girl. Despite the reasonable graphics, this will get very boring fast.

Still it’s worth 6 out of 10 in my opinion as it’s mindless fun, despite getting a sore finger from clicking the mouse button (I know you can keep it depressed, but that exhausts your mana quicker, lol). That's a really astute observation Kados. It does seem like a disguised Space Invaders/Galaga style game, lol.

Still, it's nice to be able to check out free games every weekend.

For those who haven't checked the thread I started last week, in which I aim to post reasonable freeware and abandonware games during the weekdays. So far I've posted the following games:

Day 1:

Marble Arena plus Trackball thanks to Big Phil

Day 2:

Day 3:

Line Rider

Day 4:

Day 5:

DXBall
Beatball
Wreckerball Dreams

Day 6:

Chicken Invaders
Space Invaders 3D

Overall the game looks promising.........
a few polite suggestions to help the development along is....

add a routine to check for hanging sprites(enemies).... a level never completes unless all sprites(enemies) are killed. Need to find a way to verify/track all are accounted to prevent game stall. Most occurances are just outside the area of mobility...

add a few extras to keep game play inter3esting instead of repetitious...for example a war hammer powerup which levels the playing field.....

restricted space for movement is distracting, as it takes away from the attack. adding total screen area for movement may fix the dead sprite issue too.

Don't let the negative comments discourage your progress...Keep up the good work.

Please help me figure out how to uninstall this game. For some reason it sets up strange, no short cut, game can't be found unless unzipped to desktop. I had this same problem with the last one I downloaded from here. Since the game does not add itself to installed programs, so you can uninstall from add/remove programs. Basically decide this one was not for me, now I can't get rid of it.
Thanks

There's a word for "Brave Dwarf"...LAME! Don't let the images above fool you...you'd be better off going to some of the abandonware sites and getting a nice scroller.

The graphics are jittery even at higher resolution settings (which really does nothing except to add shadows and the blood and bodies won't disappear.) The music and sound effects sound muffled and aren't very good (it sounds like a bad 70's era movie). The main object seems to be click the mouse as fast as possible. Although you're supposed to be swinging an ax, not casting a spell, you shoot out a blue streak that knocks opponents down well out of reach.

It's a large download that has no installation file--just an unzip. Which is fine if you know how to go in and make a shortcut. The game runs well enough, but just over a few minutes was enough for me. Dungeon Siege this isn't.

Short Review:

Introduction:

Today’s game giveaway is rather a large download as arcade games go at 52.5Mb in size. When in stalled this increases to 58.4Mb. There is no desktop or start menu shortcuts installed so make a note of where the game is installed so that you can create your own shortcut. For those who don’t know how to do this check out the game discussion forums where I’ve posted a short tutorial. The install path is as follows:

C:\Games\

Apart from the above, installation is a breeze.

The Game:

On the face of it, despite the crude main and options menu, this game ‘looks’ quite good. The options menu allows you to adjust the quality of the graphics and the level of blood. By default, these are set to their lowest settings, so I’d boost them up to full if you want to enjoy the best looking graphics, though there didn’t appear to be much of a difference when using this facility. Perhaps for those with slow computers this may be useful?

It’s in the third person perspective looking from the top down. Graphics look pretty good, but the controls are a little slow to respond (and that’s playing it on a reasonably fast computer with loads of memory (3.2GHz + 4Gb RAM and an NVIDIA 8800 GTS 640Mb graphics card). I found it really difficult to survive at first, but once I realized that the cursor was an integral part of the attack, the game became a little easier. So please persevere and you’ll find it easy to progress through to later levels. There is an indicator to the bottom left of the screen that tells you how much strength/ life and magical power you have left. The enemy dwarves leave behind lot of health and potions so it’s relatively easy to keep your powers up to full strength. The right mouse button is the most powerful. Your mouse cursor dictates the way your dwarf throws potions and moves. You have to use a combination of the mouse and arrow/cursor keys (or the WASD keys) to move your dwarf around the field. (I took me a little time to figure this out) Both mouse button use your sword to attack with . Then the left bitton is also used to throw small amounts of mana at your opponents and the right button throws large gobs of mana. By holding down either or both buttons you can increase your attack to melee level. When you kill an opponent (and there are lots of them coming at you all the time) sometimes a potion will be left behind. To collect it you have to walk over it within a specified time, so make sure you pick them up because they contain health packages as well as new spells such as ice rain, meteorite shower or explosions. There are five types of packages:

Elixirs – that give life or magic power. The amount of blood left behind after an opponent has been killed can be adjusted via the options menu if you think it’s to much for your children. (Assuming you’ll let your children play this game)

Angels – gives +1 life but no more than 5

Scrolls – gives new spells

Traps – Cause Ice Rain, Meteorites, explosions and the power to throw
your enemies far

Auras – Give you new abilities such as running faster, attacking faster as well as others that when reading from the help menu seem a little cryptic.

You can earn up to five lives in game. When you are killed you get a message saying “You’ve Been Beaten – Now you will be resurrected” This will depend upon how many lives you have left, which are indicated at the bottom left of the screen next to the life force and mana level indicators.

Images:

Images will be posted later today. I’ve got to go to see my daughter at ballet in a few moments…….If you only see a couple of images, check back later.

All on one page:

As a slidesow:

http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/Brave%20Dwarf/?albumview=slideshow

Conclusion:

I know a lot of community members are going to knock this game just because it’s from ‘Some Company. And in part I do agree, because there is something missing that would give the game some polish. However I’ll be keeping this game as it’s a challenge. I managed to get through several levels but was killed after taking a screen capture for the review. From the time I played this game, there didn’t seem to be any variability in the levels, each one blending into the next after a short message saying you were progressing to the next stage. I hope someone will report that there is different scenes, otherwise this game will become boring very fast.

This is worth 6 out of 10 in my estimation. Unfortunately, some company’s games seem to be impossible to capture with the video capture programs I use (Camtasia and Capture Wiz Pro), so again no video this week. Sorry.

Music:

The games music can be found directly in the games folder, but I cannot tell which file is which, so if you wish to change the in game music, you,ll have to do it by trial and error. Make sure you back up all the ogg files, then systematically echange them for the music you like. You’ll have to convert the files to the .ogg format and re name the tracks you use using a suitable audio converter. You can find a couple of these in the freeware library; either/or will do:

This is quite a nice, simple little arcade game. The bad guys come from the top, you shoot them and dodge their attacks, and collect powerups.

Starts off quite easy, but it gets rather difficult later - definitely worth a try.

Oh, it is a little buggy - sometimes the bad guys won't appear or something, leaving you unable to complete a round. You can usually fix this by blasting everything all around the corners of the map.

Download seemed to work fine. However, after game over I got a failure notice and was prompted to re-install the game.

The gameplay was unlogical using: the arrowkeys and both mousebuttuons doesn't work. I got killed 3 times within 10 seconds and I blaim the gameplay not myself ;)

Two thumbs down.

WOW...huge download, 52 meg. I have good downlod speeds so only took about a minute. Grapics are really nice, I liked them. Sound is ok, it didn't bother me after 10 minutes like most the games on here do.

Now, the importanat part, the game play. All I can say it reminds me of a hyped-up dwarf version of Galaga or Space Invaders or something like that. Same thing over and over. I love midevil based games, so I had high hopes for this one. I was tottaly let down. I was very boring.
