Game GiveAway Of The Day - which I have always (for many years) understood to mean that as long as I follow the link, download, and install the game on THAT day, then I get a game for FREE. I understand the restrictions, like crashing your computer then you lose the game, and so on. So where is the download button ? If there's no Download button, then how do I get my FREE game TODAY ? I don't want to buy it - although I have in fact purchased previous GiveAway's - I don't want to complete tasks so I can win a key. I've read WhiteRabbit's comment that changing the name of the site is NOT an option - because the name is commercially valuable. So that means that the site is operating FRAUDULENTLY - because you are NOT doing what the site name claims it is doing. I'll say it again - telling me I have to complete tasks (however trivial, free or not) so I can (Read that as 'might' or 'possibly') win keys is NOT the same as Giving a Game Away FREE every day. I'm sure that the Freedom Of Information legislation was never intended for such trivial matters, so just tell me - how many regular, long time users of this site have you lost, or do you expect to lose, since you have STOPPED GIVING AWAY FREE GAMES ?? Before someone tells me to stop shouting (Using Capitals) don't bother - sometimes you have to shout so that people who are hard of hearing can get the message. I've read lots of comments, all making this same point, but I've yet to read an official answer from the owners of the site - either they ARE hard of hearing, or they feel they don't need to answer to the users ?

Thank you for your feedback framplot, I've answered this many times over the last several years. The reason the site hasn't changed it's name is because over the couple of years it did give away games on a daily basis it ended up with very good standing with the major search engines. In case you don't know what that means. If say for example i post a particular set of words, a phrase or post labelled images or videos on this site, if I then make a search via one of the major search engines, that phrase image or whatever is likely to be found on the first page of searches instead of being 30 pages back, where it's unlikely ever to be seen. If the game giveaway team changed the name they would lose that search advantage.

With respect to free games, as I've mentioned loads of times, especially recently, it's become extremely difficult to get free games. It appears we've lost our long term sponsors Alawar and Playrix (though I can't qualify that; they may just be taking a break as Alawar did after several months in the first year of the giveaways). Arcade games have become two a penny over the last several years. you can pick up a bundle of 10 games worth upwards of $80 or more for as little as a few dollars thanks to the advent of the Indie Bundle, the first of which started about 2010. The prices of Arcade games also dropped dramatically back in 2008. Prior to that they used to cost almost $20 each, now you can pick them up dirt cheap, also there are constant sales all over the net. Basically games are so cheap, Developers are struggling to stay afloat. Loads of developers including the large AAA developers have gone bust over the last three or four years due in part to the massive reduction in profits. It seems no one is willing to pay decent prices for most games these days. They are just some of the reasons we are not getting games on a daily basis and now hardly at all. Those games that are unlimited at the moment seem to be coming from other free games sites, i.e. MyPlayCity, who earn money by forcing community members to visit their site whenever they close a game down that was downloaded from their site. They pay the developer a percentage of the money they earn from community members visiting their site for each game that is downloaded and every time you play that game, becasue when you close the game down, it forces your browser to open to the free game site. Developers are actually earning a decent amount of money from these free game sites , which in turn is payed by advertising companies and other sites who advertise on the free game sites for every download. The game giveaway team only pay a small retainer and not a specific amount for each download like the free game sites do, so developers can earn substantial amounts from giving their games to free games sites as opposed to giving them to this site. . It's no wonder we get so few games. It's become un-profitable for developers to give away games like they used to. They can make much more by giving the games to those free game sites such as MPC, Gametop and TooMky games, or adding their games to one of the many bundles that are now available every day. At this point in time there are over 40 bundles available, with hundreds of arcade games that cost from less than a dollar to around $5 for 10 games or more. we are getting . If a developer is lucky enough to get their game added to the Humble bundle or one of the other well known bundles such as Indie Gala or Groupee's, they can make a lot of money becasue hundreds of thousands of those bundles are sold and each developer gets a decent slice of the cake.

I'd always hoped the community would help this site by posting decent feedback about the game we did get. That way developers would have seen other uses for this site not just a way station to entice community members to purchase other games from their sites. Sadly that never happened, with only 0.001% of the community bothering to post feedback about the game. I asked every week =at the end of my reviews as well as posting other comments trying to persuade the community to help, but hardly anyone bothered.

It saddens me to see so many negative comments about this site after all they have done for this community. That said each to their own.

I didn't know there was a game today despite checking yesterday and several times until the game was supposed to go live this morning. At the appointed hour the game was still in the unsubscribed listings, which usually always means its for another week. It wasn't until the early afternoon when someone pointed out there was a game over on the other site that I found out they had decided to post it. I wasn't going to bother posting a review because it usually always takes me a minimum of at least 4 hours or more to write up a review, even a cobbled together one. Anyway, in a last minute decision I decided to go ahead and work on one. Unfortunately in my rush to start I got the game title totally wrong i.e I wrote about Xotic instead of Xotrix and for the past five hours have been working on the wrong game. Thanks to Alexa Bennett for pointing out my mistake. looks like I won't be posting anything after all. I'll leave the rest of what I wanted to post even though it's unrelated to today's game as there is an apology to those i owe keys to and a request for some information about software.

Xotrix

Sorry no review today. Posted about the wrong game. too late to redo the review now. :(

The latest free game over on Origin has changed to Nox. Nox is an action role-playing game developed by Westwood Studios and published by Electronic Arts in 2000 for Microsoft Windows. It details the story of Jack, a young man from Earth who is pulled into a high fantasy parallel universe and has to defeat the evil sorceress Hecubah and her army of Necromancers to return home. Depending on the player's choice of character class at the beginning of the game (warrior, conjurer, or wizard), the game follows three largely different linear story lines, each leading to its unique ending. If you've ever played the early RPG's such as Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale or the early Fallout series and liked them, you'll probably like this game as well. It's 16 years old now, but still looks pretty good for it's age. This type of game has held it's appeal and looks far better than the early first person games. I highly recommend it. Unfortunately the multiplayer portion of the game is no longer active, at least the online portion. I think the local network will still allow players to play together, but haven't had chance to check that yet..

You can get Nox HERE. Please note that you do require the Origin game platform to be able to download and install the game.

If you are having problems installing the game check the thread I've linked to above. If you can't find any fixes check the comments made by the community below and over the last few weeks for suggestions. Thank you.

If today's game wasn't to your liking, you may find other games either free or for less than the price of a cup of coffee (from your favorite coffee house) via the 'Weekly Roundup of Game Deals' thread which I've posted a link to above, or HERE.

I've still to send out some Steam keys to those that commented on previous weeks games. I apologize for the delay. I've been literally run off my feet for the past few weeks with lots of issues, problems with tenants, legal issues, tax etc. At least my kids have finished their exams for this year. I am not going to run the free keys until I've caught up with stuff. Rest assured my personal giveaways will return soon. I have thousands of games to give away and will be adding a significant number to the list that is posted above soon. I'm so far behind with everything at the moment, continuing would just confuse my morphine addled brain even more than it is already. :) I will resume giving more keys away once I've sent out all of those I owe to community members. Hopefully sooner than later; I just need a few quite days to get my act together, but I'm not making any promises as to how long it will take. To those that have already qualified for keys and haven't received a key/keys for the game/games they requested, please be patient. Also, remember I need to see what you want via the thread I've linked too above. If you've had problems signing into your forum account, let me know what your forum name is and I'll resend you a new password. If you can't get into the forums at all, please email me on Whiterabbit-uk@hotmail.co.uk and title the email with Whiterabbits game giveaways in capital letters. That way I'll see them easily. To those that have thanked me for keys, if I've not replied I will as soon as I'm able. To those that gave me their Steam names, unfortunately some of them were not viable, so, if you've not received a friends request from me, it's not for want of trying; instead you can send a friends request to my main Steam account which is Whiterabbit-uk and/or my secondary Steam account which is Slickwhiterabbit. Please email me as well with your Steam name because I get a lot of requests due to the high number of games in my Steam library and more so because I have quite a lot of spare games in my inventory as well as thousand of trading cards, TF2 items and CS:GO items plus other stuff that people for some reason think I will give away if they ask. I love giving, but I don't like being preempted by community members begging. Because of this I've started to ignore requests for quite long periods. If you send the request without letting me know via email i may miss the request.

I'd like to to give a massive thank you to Whizzy (or Mavadelo his Steam name), who has created a review site for me. I am talking to him via Team Speak over the coming weeks while he tutors me in the ins and outs of the site. The site won't go live right away as I want to post lots of game reviews. It will be a combination of arcade and AAA game reviews, some old and some new, divided into appropriate genres. We intend to avoid any advertising, so the site should be safe to peruse without worrying about clicking on links that may send to to rogue sites or ad's. I will also try to post reviews of new releases. At least those that I purchase. For example, I've just started playing the new version of Mirrors Edge: Catalyst that was released on Friday. It's an excellent sequel. If you liked the original you'll love the new one. For those who don't know anything about Mirror's Edge it's a parkour style game where, living outside of the law, you run and jump across high rise buildings as well as in and around buildings delivering messages to the underworld. It's set in a dystopian future where conglomerates rule the world. You can see the launch trailer (showing a fast paced cameo of the game) HERE. It may even be one of my first AAA game reviews on the new site.

I will still continue to post my reviews here and moderate as always. I'm hoping the new site will invigorate me, which can only be a good thing with respect to my reviews here, as I have lost a lot of impetus over the last few years, and especially recently since the changes. I will be having regular giveaways of my own on the new site, but nothing like what we get here as my giveaways are all paid for by me and will be limited to one or a few of each game offered. I do have several keys for some games, but most of the keys are one offs or at the most a couple of keys for each game. As mentioned previously, I have around 10 000 Steam keys and several hundred other keys for other platforms such as Origin, Itch.io and Desura, many of which will be up for grabs. Most of the games are low budget indie games and arcade games (up to $20), but I do have lots of more expensive Indie and AAA game keys to give away, (most will be awarded in exchange for appropriate reviews and other comments about games in general). Some of the AAA games I have spare that will be available to the community include X-Com:Enemy Unknown, Civilization V, Aliens vs Predator, ArmA II & 3, Batman Arkham City and Arkham Origins, Baldur's Gate Enhanced, Deadly Premonition, Battlefield 3, Gas Guzzlers Extreme Gold, All three of the original Company of Heroes, Defense Grid 2, several copies of Call of Juarez, Disciples II: Gallean's Return, King Arthur - The Role-playing War game, Max Payne 3, Dragon Age Origins, Far Cry 3, Front Lines: Fuel of War, Grid, a couple of the GTA titles, Rage, Omerta - City of Gangsters, the fantastic Flatout franchise, Mount & Blade: Warband and lots of others. I haven't posted a list of my Steam keys, but you can see the spare games I have in my main Steam account HERE , there are roughly 350 games, quite a few of which will be up for grabs at some point in time. There is a massive collection of indie and Arcade titles in the ten thousand spare keys available as well, but I don't have an alphabetical list of those (I've been working on creating one for over a year and am still a long way off completing the document as it's tedious work, so I don't spend much time on it at the moment. If anyone has got a suggestion that would make it easier for me to put all of the games alphabetically i.e. some type of sorting program that will automatically put everything in alphabetic order. My lists comprise of the name of the game, then the code for the game in the following form:

Name of Game - XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

I have hundreds of separate Word for Windows documents and Word Pad documents with all of the game names and codes listed, what I've been trying to do so far is get all of the games copied to one document and haven't even started arranging them alphabetically. There's got to be a program that can do this easily????

Recent games deals (now called The Weekly Roundup of Game Deals) is HERE.

Whiterabbit-uk, the game is Zotrix, not Xotic ...

...................Moderator Comment........................

Thanks Alexa, I can't believe I posted the wrong game. I have both games , i.e. Xotrix and Xotic. I checked my Steam account and Xotic was the first one to come up when I used the search function and although I remember thinking the spelling was odd I carried on without checking. That's almost 5 hours of work down the drain. What an embarrassment, lol :)

I must admit, I'm rather confused! I came here, as I do every week, to see what was available. I saw a giveaway for a MyPlayCity game (good for 18+ hours) and one comment - the comment mentioned the download time was excessive. I gave it a shot, and sure enough, got a message of "downloading........." with the ........ moving and going no where fast.
Because the game (Panopticon: Path of Reflections) is of a genre that I never used to like, but since playing two offerings from MPC with the words "Snark Butsters" in the title, I think I've got the hang of the genre. So, I downloaded direct from MPC. Have been doing other things, so haven't yet launched/played the game. But thought I'd pop back over here to mention the download went faster.... and now I see a totally different game, and the win a key thing instead.
I must say, I'm totally curious as to the change, in just a few hours....
Also, I probably won't get an opportunity to play until later today.

Further confusion - checked in to see if there was any response to my comment, and got back to the Panopticon giveaway page again -- after scrolling through those comments, found a small link at the bottom of the page leading to this page. ????? what the heck is going on???

I have been on this site since the beginning and I have gotten some decent programs over the years....THEN Comes the CHANGE! First it's "PART TIME LICENCES, Then it's "HELP US ADVERTISE", and you can't download the program until you write them up on your facebook account! Now it's "TAKE A CHANCE AT WINNING A VERY LIMITED NUMBER OF LICENCES!" Thank you for the great memories and the software, but now this site for whatever the reason has changed the whole makeup of the word "FREE." You need it to say: "MAYBE YOU'LL GET A GAME OF THE DAY or (WEEK) AND THEN MAYBE YOU WON'T! Like they say: "Nothing is ever FREE!" and this site is proving it's true more and more as time goes by!

"There's got to be a program that can do this easily????"

I don't know how it might work for you, but take a look at Phrase Expander Pro to see if it might do the job for you. And it if it is worth the price.
It's a very nice and well done add on for Office.

Well........after years and years of happy offerings, this is the second in a row of no joy. I like arcade shooters. Been awhile since I played one. No straight download function anymore. Got to log in with Facedbook or whatever...so....ok. Then I'm into the "Steam" World of only finding games for sale. No giveaway.

I can't tell if the problem is GAOTD, or Steam, or me. Now...every time I reboot my computer, I watch Steam perform an update on its software. Its down to only 1-2 minutes now.....but I wonder if something is wrong in my Steam Account so I keep getting software updates and I keep getting NO FREE GAME.

Looks like the future, is rolling me over. I'll keep waiting though. I see a newsletter to advise me of the next free daily offering? Is that real? A game every day???? I check this website on the weekends....am I missing five other days of no joy????

PS---I also like the way the mods are starting to engage the commentators. Keep the dry humor and light hand going. Might be worth my weekly visit even if I can't get any games.

Reply   |   Comment by bobbo  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+5)

bobbo, The updating of steam is a normal thing. You can turn it off through the start up if you do not want it to do this every time you turn on your pc. It does that for security reasons and also because they are constantly adding new things so they have to do that. It is a really good platform because you never lose your games. What you have there will always be there.

Hope that helps a bit!
Pixiey

Reply   |   Comment by Pixiey  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Pixiey, Yes, that does help, a bit. So now....the update is to be expected and is not a Red Flag for not being fully registered at Steam. That still leaves the fact that the last two offers here at GAOTD that were Steam related resulted in NO GAME being provided. All I get directed to or can find is a page where I am offered the game for sale.

NO DOUBT: I could just be missing some trick.....some drop down menu or a shadow box or highlight that is obvious to those in the know? But for first time users of STeam, and long time user of GAOTD==>I'm not getting any games.

I am building a Vive ready VR computer though...and I'll get Steam to work eventually.

Thanks for the comment.

<>...................Moderator Comment........................

Hi Bobbo, what exactly is wrong? Did you win a Steam key but have been unable to redeem the keys? The process of activation once you have a Steam key is straightforwards. Just a few clicks of your mouse and the games should be activated. Once activated you can then start to download the games from the library tab. If you have a Steam key, you first need to ensure you are logged into your Steam account. If you haven't created an account yet, before you can redeem a key you must first create an account. Your comment above implies you don't have a Steam account yet? Once you've installed the Steam client, when you go to log in, , i.e. when the Log in window appears, there should be a button that enables you to create a Steam account. Once you've created that account and jumped through a few security hoops you should then be able to activate your Steam games. If yopu are not sure how to do this, please go back two weeks :)

Reply   |   Comment by bobbo  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

bobbo, Hiya Bobo, I don't think you "miss some hidden feature", It is not the case that if they have a Steam game on here you just open Steam and it will be just available. Steam giveaways are in general the "jump through a few hoops and MAYBE you WIN a key" . In case you won a key you will receive a congratualtory email from GOTD stating you won and providing a key.

To use the key do the following. In your steam software look at the left bottom of the program window. You will see "Add A Game" mentioned there. Click this and choose the second option called "Activate a product on Steam" , a pop up will appear with some legal info you have to accept followed by a window where you can type/paste the key you won/got.

Now after done that and having gotten the window to confirm the game you got youi want to click "Library" and once there look at the left hand panel where a list will be of your owned games, here your game will be listed in grey. Click on it to go to your personal game page. Here you will see a button named install. After you clicked that you will see a blue bar appearing in the bottom of the steam software. If you would click that blue bar you could follow the download progress. Once the blue bar dissapears the game is downloaded and installed and the "install" button will be replaced by a "play" button.

If for some reason you lose your current pc, os or steam install there is not to worry, on youir new system just download steam and go to the Library to find and install your games again, no need to rebuy or re-register tehm. Also... if you look in the store youi will see there are some free to play games available of which some are actually very good. Mind you though these games in general use some sort of micro payment like you also see on many of these facebook games. In a feww days/weeks the summer sale should also be there where you can buy selected titles (also AAA titles) for discounts that can go up to a whopping 90% (but in general ranging between 40 and 75%)

Hope this helped youi out, if youi have any questions regarding steam and it's functions feel free to find me there with the same nick as I use here. To do so look at the right hand bottom of Steam click the "view friends list" and in the new pop up you will see "friends" in the absolute top of that window with a little arrow next to it (above your nickname) click the little arrow and choose "add friends" and type "Mavadelo" in the window presented to you. I am pretty sure I am the only Mavadelo listed on steam so it should be an easy find, if more listed, it's the Dutch one with the wolf avatar ;)

Reply   |   Comment by Mavadelo  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Mavadelo, == thanks for comments and help. Took 5 days for the email notice to reach me! You are saying the giveaway of the day is only for "a chance" to get a steam game? That doesn't sound right.......but always could be. In my last effort, I did get a "key" of some sort that I assumed I would use instead of making a payment via Pay Pal, but that option never showed up that I could see.

Well....I'll wait for the next Steam GAOTD and give this all another try......including a message to you at the game site...so thanks for that offer.

I will certainly try a few of the VR/3D games as part of building my own HoloDeck!

Happy gaming.

bobbo, Hi
Yes it is the "new and improved" GGOTD. Some games will be as usual, download (or get a key) for everyone, some offerings however will have a limited amount of keys available and those will run for a set amout of time. This offering was one of the latter ones. running for a week for 100 keys (seems I did not win one myself)

Todays offering (Saturday the 25th of June) is one of the "a key for all" games and it can be redeemed on the steam version of the game HOWEVER it is not redeemed in the way I described above. When you get the key you will need to enter it ingame when setting up your account, there will be a field available during sign up where you can enter this code

Happy gaming to you too :)

I would like to comment on all the wonderful aspects of this game. But since I haven't played it, and since it looks like I never will, since this is no longer a giveaway site, I'll just have to wait and see if other comments convince to buy the game. I mean, HOW are you supposed to make a comment on a game you can't play?

.........................Moderator Comment.........................

Hi Jeff..... easy peasy......

Go watch some videos, and maybe read some reviews. I will be posting my review shortly which has links to several good reviews of the game plus links to some videos. I know it's not the same as playing the game, but they should give you a good idea as to what to expect from the game. From the video game play footage you could then infer what you think of the game. It's not as good as actually playing the gamer, but it can still be an effective way to make comments.
