Wonderlines
In Brief
Wonderlines is match three or more game with a different mechanic to the match three games we usually see here. It's the first time we have seen this game on the giveaway project. :)

The Game:
Essentially, what you're getting with Wonderlines is a simple puzzle game that asks you to put three or more balls, of the same colour in a row. This sounds really quite simple however, it's focused around removing brown squares from the blue board. There are some added features of the game that make it a little more advanced and will really have you thinking in no time. If you want a closer look at the game, watch the videos I've linked to below.

The game is really quite easy to play and there's a tutorial making it real easy to get up and running. Essentially, all you have to do is to tap on one colour of ball and then tap again where you want it on the board (assuming there is a clear patch to where you want the ball to be moved to. If there is a clear path, a white line showing the route to the match will appear on the board). This seems really simple when you first start to play…

However, it quickly gets a little trickier as the game begins to inform of all the other features that are going to be thrown at you. For instance, small balls on a square indicate that colour of ball is going to form there soon. (this occurs if in your next turn you don't make a match. Every time you fail to make a match, the small coloured balls that are already present enlarge and new small balls appear, making it more difficult to move balls to create matches; though at times it can be advantageous if the small ball itself creates matches and sometimes a chain reaction that activates one or more of the specials). Making you have to think about how best to take advantage of how to complete a level.

Then come the extras, in the forms of bombs, diamonds etc and these also affect the game board. For instance, the diamond will lock on to a colour and then destroy all other colours the same on the board and the bomb will match to any colour and explode, taking balls out around it. These extras really add a great dynamic to the game and force you to use your head a little better than you would do.

The game gets slowly harder and harder until you have to think quite quickly nothing is left to become too repetitive and you'll be crossing an ancient desert on your quest to complete all the puzzles. It seems like a trivial ideal but, it really does help to make the game more accessible.

Conclusion
I'd become a little jaded playing match three games, but I actually really enjoyed playing Wonderlines to the point that I was playing it in preference to some of my favourite Steam games of the moment (Generation Zero, Second Extinction, a couple of breakouts and The Elder Scrolls Online).
That's quite unusual as I rarely play these giveaway games once I've completed my assessment in preparation for the reviews I write. I have been playing The Elder Scrolls Online virtually every day since it was released back in 2014 and even before that when I was involved with the beta testing; yet over the last few days I've hardly played any of my games of the moment because of this easy to pick up but hard to put down arcade game. It's also a game we've not been given before. I wholeheartedly give this a big thumbs up, and highly recommend you try it out, even if you've had enough of match three games.

Don't forget to check the Epic game site for this weeks freebie, which is the premium AAA game Star Wars: Battlefront II . You have to have both the Epic Launcher and Origin installed to be able to play the game.

Also available until later today (Sunday 6pm UK time) via the Humble Store is the arcade simulation Bomber Crew. Once you get the Steam key you have to activate it via Steam by the 21st January, after which it is no longer redeemable; which is also the day the Star Wars game rolls over to a new freebie called Galactic Civilizations III.

Whiterabbit-uk, Got tired of Match 3 myself, having gotten suckered into Empires & Puzzles (it got very Pay2Win) and Merge Dragons (too many events at one point).

It'll be nice to have a casual one to play again though and this does sound interesting and different.

Thanks for the review. Stay safe wee rabbit. ^^

I haven't played this game for very long yet, but it certainly has a few interesting twists that I haven't met before. It's easy to use, nice bright colours and the scenery makes a pleasant background, so it's easy on the eye. Moving the pieces around is a little different from the usual game, because tiny pieces pop up with each move, and you have to try to squash them before they grow bigger and fill up the whole board. It makes you think more than most Match 3 games, which is always a good sign! Definitely a keeper for now, so thanks as ever to GGAOTD, Toomky and Big Fish, and of course Whiterabbit, who gives us all the useful hints and tips while he's trying the game for himself as well as for us.

I'm in love! I am a match-3 snob, but I don't like a lot of the match-3 games because they're just the same old thing. This one is different. It makes me think instead of randomly making matches and hoping I get done quickly, and I love that!

Not sure what happened to my prior comment, but I wish someone could explain why GGOTD games no longer install correctly. They just jump to the successfully activated screen without being installed or activated, even with anti-virus disabled. It's frustrating.

Collie,

Hi Collie, it probably hadn't been moderated. Comments don't appear until they have been moderated (due in part to past experiences with spamming, advertising and of course Trolls). I'd not moderated for several hours.

Before you try to install the game; first, open the event viewer as soon as you've attempted to install the game then immediately check the event logs to see if there are any error messages that could indicate what the issue is. Just in case you're not used to using the event viewer you can find a decent article HERE.

So far over 1200 community members have downloaded this game. If there was an issue with the game we would be seeing many more comments; so, it's likely it has to be something to do with your system or your provider that is causing the issue.

I had a similar issue about three years ago, where I was unable to install any giveaways from both the applications and games for almost six weeks. I couldn't figure out what the issue was and had tried everything I could think of. It had started immediately following upgrading some of the computers hardware (I'd replaced my motherboard, RAM, a higher rated PSU and graphic cards).

I'd replaced the Motherboard with the same one because I didn't want to have to re-register Windows as it was an OEM (builders copy) and Microsoft may have refused the registration due to the only original part left being the CPU. Both the CPU and Motherboards serial numbers are recorded by Microsoft when you first register a computer. If you use an OEM version, it can only be used for the original build; {that said, I'd previously been able to re register an OEM versions. I'd said the CPU and been damaged and because I'd replaced the CPU with an Intel rather than an AMD CPU I had to replace the Motherboard as well}. I thought that they would have that on record and could refuse a second one. In the end I contacted Microsoft and they remotely connected to my computer and found the issue in less than a minute.

About six moths previously I'd install some security software (that I'd got from the applications side of the giveawayoftheday, but hadn't liked it, so disabled it (instead of deleting it). It transpires that changing my hardware somehow reactivated the software (I could never figure out how that happened) and it was blocking downloads from the giveaway site due to the Themida wrapper. It never showed up in the Task Manager, otherwise I would have realised; but there was an entry in the mouse's right context menu, but because I had a menu as long as my arm I'd totally missed that it was present and as it was only briefly used I'd totally forgotten that I'd previously installed the security software.

As soon as the guy from Microsoft found it, I asked him to delete it for me, which he did very quickly. I was then able to install and register all the giveaways again. I tell you this because it may be that you still have security running in the back ground.

Have you checked the FAQ's thread over in the forums. There's quite a few fixes for various issues. Maybe you'll find a fix there that will enable you to get these games again. You can find the thread HERE

I turned off my anti-virus, like I've had to do for a while here. But I got the "successfully activated" screen, and I never saw any screens to actually install the game. It's not installed anywhere. This site used to work well, but it hasn't for a while. I had given up even trying to install anything, but this one sounded so good, I had to try. I guess I'll have to totally give up on in this site. Sad, because I used to get some great games and stuff here. Nothing installs anymore.

game is not installed apparently, even if I did get the message it was successfully activated...

Lieve,
That happens when you do not pause your ant-virus software. Something to do with the wrapper they use.

I love this game! Definitely a different way to match 3, much more complex. I used to play it all the time, but lost it somewhere getting new computer etc.
It really makes you think and plan ahead. And when you clear the board, what an accomplishment. So glad to have this again.

Same problem as with yesterday's offering... I extracted the files from the .zip file, disabled Avast temporarily, and ran setup.exe... nothing was installed even though it claimed to have installed it. I even tried to run as administrator, to no avail.

To get yesterday's program installed, I had to email the company with my registration key, and then download the program directly from their website. THEN it worked.

How can I install this one?

Reply   |   Comment by Hamachisn't  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Hamachisn't,
Aside from Avast, do you have any other security program running? In addition to Avast, I use Zemana and have to pause "real time protection" on that for it not to block the setup.exe file. Just FYI.

This is a match 3 game with a difference. You have to match the coloured balls before more are added to the board to complete the task to complete the level. The game has 3 modes of difficulty. Very enjoyable to play.
