In Brief
A quirky match three game that was originally given away July 31 2010 HERE
Suggestions:
Whether you like or dislike Trio: The Great Settlement please give some feedback about your opinion of today's game giveaway, for example, what you liked or disliked about the game, and how it could be improved from your point of view. If you don't like this genre at all, please explain why. What improvements would change your opinion? There are thousands of subscribers to the game giveaway of the day every weekend which makes this an ideal forum for giving developers ideas as to what their consumers (i.e you) would like to see in a game. For example, you could suggest extra content such as better or more original mini games, or a level editor that you would like to see that would make it more appealing to you. Maybe you think the graphics are a little dated and are in need of re skinning, or maybe you've just had enough of the genre and want to see something different or something with more originality?

Giving such feedback instead of saying nothing or just saying this game is rubbish or good may bring more developers to the site, which could mean more and better games. Would you give away thousands of copies of a game (or extra content for a game) away to a community that complains all the time instead of giving useful feedback? It only takes a few moments of your time. This site could be transformed if only the community would be more forthcoming in their opinions of the games they are getting for free instead of complaining about the way this site has changed or that they don't like Steam games. If something isn't for you then move on to the next giveaway, or check out the extra's section at the end of this review; you never know, you may find something that interests you.
If you miss today's game giveaway you can always get the game via MyPlayCity 24/7 HERE or, If you prefer to purchase the game you can get it via Big Fish Games HERE. It costs £2.99/$2.99 if you are a new subscriber otherwise it's £7.70
Installation:
Trio: The Great Settlement downloads to a 36.9 MB zip file that unzips to three files, (a setup.gcd security wrapper, the set up file and a read me). Those with multiple hard drives are able to save games on any drive they wish. The newly installed game is 39.3 MB in size. The game installs to the following path by default, but can be changed by the user if you prefer:
C:\Program Files (x86)\MyPlayCity.com\Trio - The Great Settlement

Four shortcuts are installed to the desktop. three of which can be safely deleted (Play Online Games, MyPlayCity Games and shortcuts to a free online game which vary each week). Also, if you don't like icons installed to the quick launch task bar, make sure you uncheck the box when the additional tasks window appears (after the Select Start Menu Folder window)

Introduction:
Welcome to Trio: The Great Settlement - a mind blowing liberation adventure! Orbics are kind and funny creatures - they are round and multicolored. They used to live on their planet Orb till the times when evil powers came and imprisoned them. Now orbics are separated and caged so they are waiting for you to rescue them. Choose a mode which suits you most and get started with Trio: The Great Settlement! Choose normal or relaxed mode and select any level from either of them. The game play is truly amazing - use your mouse to aim boxes grouped at the bottom of the field, left-click to drop an orbic in a box and match three or more orbics. Once semi-colored orbics are matched they get free and bring you scores. Make combos - that is more than 3 orbics matched - to get extra scores. Watch the clocks to see how much time is left to complete a level. A flask on the right shows your level progress. A level is complete when all the orbics are free. Try not to let the pile of orbics rise higher than the red laser line otherwise the old mechanisms helping you to throw boxes with orbics will get damaged. This game stands out among all the games of the same match 3 genre thanks to its unique game mechanics. There are no strict geometrical rules which means you can match the boxes with orbics not only horizontally or vertically but also diagonally and even when the boxes are just a little bit adjacent to each other! Even when the boxes are attached with just a touch of a corner there will be a blast anyway and orbics will get free. Enjoy the graphics and outstanding mechanical freedom, generously granted by the developers! Set the orbics free! Download Trio: The Great Settlement now!

If you have a problem installing or activating or getting Trio: The Great Settlement to work please visit the problems section, which I've now incorporated into the FAQ's thread, and which you can find HERE. when this was originally given away I used to post the review in the game discussion forums as well where you could post issues after the giveaway had ended. you'll find that thread HERE
The Game:
Every level is different with a combination of challenges. For example, some levels are flooded with water, meaning you will have to compensate for buoyancy in order to place your Orbics where you want them to go. In some levels you must use your Orbics to dig deep and retrieve valuable treasure chests full of ancient gold.
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
After you have saved a number of Orbics from their dark prisons you can use the gold you acquired to build them new homes in your own thriving settlement on the floating islands. The little Orbics respond and change mood when you build necessary structures for them, like markets, schools, etc.
The game comprises of 70 levels, each level having two stages, (effectively giving you 140 levels), and there are three game modes called Normal, Relaxed and Open, though the open mode isn’t available until at least one of the first two has been completed. You can then choose any level you wish or click on the random button which chooses levels at random. The difference between Normal and Relaxed is that the former mode (Normal) is timed.
There is an introductory story board comprising of several screens, then a little animated sequence showing you one of the islands that you can develop as the game progresses.. Both can be skipped by clicking on the X.
A stage is completed when the flask to the right of the playing area has been filled by red fluid, or in the case of the timed mode you run out of time or the boxes (orbis’s) reach the red laser marker.

Options include the usual slider for music, which I found very repetitive and nondescript, plus the sound volume for in game effects. Thankfully this is easily remedied by changing the music files, details of which I've included below. There is also a slider for mouse sensitivity and two toggles; one for full screen/ windowed modes and the other one for setting a custom cursor, as well as a button that takes you to the credits.
There is a simple tutorial that appears whenever a new element to the game appears. It can be turned off at any time
The game is fully controlled by the mouse. You move the blocks to be dropped to the left or right and when lined up click the left mouse button to release the block from the crane that holds the block in place. You can change this block by using the right mouse button. Blocks automatically link together when a match of three or more is made.
You earn gold by completing levels and this can then be spent on improving the islands. When the island screen opens you click on the build button which brings up a selection panel. Initially only one house is available (for a price of 500 gold pieces), but as the game progresses another six buildings are unlocked. From the island screen you can also gain access to the trophy room, which displays the various awards that you earn during the game.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
As well as the main menu or how to play section that shows you pictorially and in words how to play the game. The concept is simple, make a match of three or more to destroy the bricks. The bigger the combo the more points you score.
As you progress through the game the levels become progressively harder as new game elements such as multi hit boxes and new level designs are introduced. If you fail to complete a level in time you can either restart the level or skip to the next level; however you are only allowed three skips during the game so use them wisely.

Conclusion:
Overall ‘Trio: The Great Settlement’ is an excellent and fun family game that has loads of re-playability (Each time you play a level the blocks will be in a different configuration). The kids will love The comic style graphics. The addition of a sim like mini game where you have to develop a series of islands as the game progresses adds a little extra to the usual match three game play. The game play is different to the usual fare that you'd expect from this branch of the match three genre, with interesting puzzles incorporated into the game in a subtle way. Don't let the cheerful graphic and the well worn match three concept put you off thinking that this isn't a serious puzzle game because it's not. The levels get progressively harder and harder, and I challenge even the hardiest of puzzle lovers not to say that they had a hard time reaching the end of this interesting game. Mini games have become the norm over the last few years and have helped to regenerate a tired genre. This sim like add-on is no exception. it's simple in design will give added pleasure to playing this excellent game.
If you don't like the in game music you can change it by exchanging the ogg files. see below in the additional information section for more information.
In my opinion this is worth a good 7.5 out of 10. I’d give it more, but there are hundreds of match three style games around these days, so can’t say it’s exceptional; I’ll certainly be keeping this one for a rainy day. :)
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank MyPlayCity for giving away Trio: The Great Settlement and also to the game giveaway team, as always, for securing other ways to get free games, in this case Steam keys.

Hi! Wasn't going to download, then seemed positive reviews, so tried it.
It seems run of the mill to me. Graphics are good. Opened quick and play is smooth.
Round beings? hmmm.... Just played a few layers and matching is simple and boring thus far.
Perhaps gets more interesting farther along? Having houses or something to gain is good, but
run of the mill thus far. Thanks for another good game and have a good tomorrow! Lee

2nd game (Beardless Wizard other one) that had cursor dead initially. Cure was to make a fresh shortcut for desktop & set compatibility to Windows 8. The icon made by installer doesn't have compat option. Once done cursor appears & plays.
Played relaxed and game in first 2 levels (need 2 to save or lose save as game warns) was easy & forgiving. Some of these blocky match3 demand super precise placement but this let's you just contact block (s) and it ties the in .
Nice graphics so sticking with it to see what more ahead. Maybe was designed for tablet or cell, who knows. Thx GOTD.

installed fine on win 8. game loads, but the screen shakes. can get to the first level but when three orbics come together they don't disappear and are just surrounding in a lightening field. turned off AV. rebooted. tried running as Admin. tested compatibility with win 7 and xp sev pack 3 all failed.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi crickt878, try changing the graphic settings via compatibility mode as this is quite an old game. Also see if there are any conflicts via the event viewer. Once open check the event logs. Finally it may be the resolution you have your monitor set to that is causing the issue. hope this helps.

Another MPC game in which full screen mode gives a window on my 4K monitor that's slightly wider than 1/4 screen and silghtly taller than 1/3 screen. So 11/12 of my screen is black with a tiny window in the middle. Last week I sent a complaint to MPC tech support but they have not made any suggestions to me.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

I've not got a 4K monitor yet so don't know whether it's the resolution that you have your monitor set to. The game is several years old, so wasn't configured to play on high res monitors. Maybe dropping the resolution temporarily will enable you to play these games with a larger sized play area. I realise changing your resolution every time you wish to play a game is annoying, but it may be the only way for these old games.

Tried to install on Windows 10 64bit. Activates but doesn't install anything. ????

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi Sam, it is most likely your security that is blocking the installation
The games exe file is wrapped in a Themida based code that protects the game from being ripped by hackers. Trouble is, Themida can also be used to hide malware, so some security programs block the installation. To install the game you can either reboot your computer in safe mode then install, white list the wrapper or temporarily turn off your security while you install the game. The giveaway team have been giving games away virtually every weekend for the past 10 years (and for 18 months every day back in 2006 to 2008) and have never given away a game infected with malware. the giveaway team thoroughly check all files for download to ensure they are safe. They are highly regarded by the major search engines; if they allowed malware to be downloaded they would lose this standing.

Trio: The Great Settlement
Downloaded and installed well on Win 10 Pro, and a somewhat different Match 3 game from MPC which has the goal of freeing the 'Orbics' cute little round characters that are imprisoned.
And that would best describe this game to me, 'cute' as it has appeals to the younger ones greatly, but can be surprisinly challenging to play in some parts, and when you get to the point of building settlements for the freed Orbics, much more involved than it first looks like. Also have different properties for some of the match 3 elements..which I don't want to spoil by going into much detail here, as you should discover them for yourself ;)

My daughter really likes this one so far, and it will be interesting to see how long it can keep her interest.
The music does get old after awhile, with the same tracks playing repeatedly, but she just turned it down, may replace some of them later for her, although she doesn't mind playing without any in some games.

Do wish they gave a bit more control on the time, as it's hard for her in some parts and gets discouraging when she works through a game screen, only to have it run out, so if they could allow more control over that feel it would greatly improve the game.
If you are a fan of Match 3's at all, or just want a really cute game make sure to check this one out ;) and always a big thank you to GGAOTD and MPC for these games.

For those that will invariably post about not being able to install it, make sure to temporarily disable your anti-virus AND any malware protection program that may interfere with the download/install, even if your av/malware protection didn't interfere before, new definitions and 'updates' may now detect the Game Wrapper as 'Malware' and it uses a technique that some malware uses, but it is Not, as both places, GGAOTD and MPC have a vested interest in keeping their downloads clean, as any slip ups would destroy their reputations quickly. SO be assured you can disable them without fear, and a forgotten one may be preventing you from downloading/installing properly on your system.

I've never been a "match 3" fan, but I don't know whether it was this game I have played previously or one very similar, but it was a fun game and challenging too. More and more developers are finding a way to make match 3 more fun and I've played them a lot more.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi JonE

Have you tried the RPG match three games, for example Try the Free to Play Marvel Puzzle Quest, Gems of War andForce of Elements. All three are a good place to start checking out the plethora of match three games with RPG elements (all three do include paid for expansions, but these are not necessary to enjoy the base games. Also available are Puzzle Quest, Puzzle Quest 2, Puzzle Guardians, Puzzle Kingdoms, Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes, Block Legend DX, Puzzle Quest: Galactrix, or others such as Puzzle Galaxies, Puzzle Chronicles. all of the above are available via Steam, however, if you don't like Steam there are many more of this type as the genre mix became very popular several years ago. The following are some that I've come across over the last several years that you may want to check out. I can give you the names of the developers if you are interested. Puzzle Legend, Age of Puzzle, ChronoSgear, Angel Salvation, Crystal Soul, Scurvy Scallawags, Warrior Crush Pro, Wizard Quest, Angel Salvation, Swoc: Of Swords and Blocks, Puzzle Blade, Wizard Quest, Sorceress of Fortune, Wargames: WOPR, Dungeon Story, Dungeon Raid, Puzzle & Dragons, MUJO, The Long Siege, Legend Four, Horde of Heroes, Adventure Age, Hero Emblems, Guardian Sword, Devil Shard, Adventurer Workshop, Darkin, Glyph Quest and Super Glyph Quest.

Due to OCD issues, I usually sidestep these kinds of games. However, having read Whiterabbit's review, it looked different enough to give a try.

Only have time to play for a half an hour today, so I can't give any suggestions for improvement, but here's what I enjoyed about today's offer. Normal mode selected.

Precision:

The pointer - made it so much easier to decide where to drop the Orbics. Puzzle de Pon - one of the first of these matching games I played, made you work for that dotted line bonus!

Also love that the matches can activate diagonally. Orbics need only be in proximity to activate too. Another feature absent in game mentioned above that drove me nuts! This game is so MUCH easier.

Decision:

Not that the game is a cake walk. You have to decide where things go quickly as long as the timer is ticking away. This means you have stay engaged and think ahead. Just barely hit level 4 and it's started to get more difficult already.

Physics:

- the reason why's you have to be more careful what you drop when. There are obstacles in the way that keep every level fresh, so you stay on your toes. The last one played had extra orbics dropping down from the right side of the screen; this can help or block your next moves, so timing is crucial!

Time:

You have a good amount to play with in Normal mode. Didn't feel rush as usually do with these kinds of games. There's a relaxed mode that I'll try next time.

Breaks:

I like the builder aspect of the game as well. Those cute hobbit shaped houses! It gives you a goal to work towards and throws you out of the Matching mode. The 'chapters' are short and that works for me. :)

Story:

I'm very impressed that a decent amount of story line was made for this game. Inside the cave, you get more information about the machines that imprisoned the Orbics. Outside the cave, you can even get to know the little round people and see their wants. Being welcomed as the saviour of the Orbics made me more eager to see more of the world right away.

Ambience - music, graphics

The music was pleasant enough not to become tedious across the rounds; the sound effects are nice too. I turned off all other background noise on the laptop. :)

The world is bright and full of pretty circular things - the Orbics themselves, the houses and their windows. Everything is very cheerfully coloured, but not gaudy. Definitely made me smile this morning.

Summation:

Love what I've seen of this game so far! It's beautifully narrated (text), drawn and the clever game mechanic allows you to enjoy the game without feeling tense, but no so relaxed that you don't have to think on your feet at times.

It's a keeper! Thank you so much, Whiterabbit for the review and to the developers and GoTD for making this available for free today.

Cheers. ^_^

Hi Dana, thank you for your excellent feedback. Go over to the thread where I've listed a few hundred Steam games i'm giving away. I suspect I may already owe you a game from last year, but memory issues have clouded my memory. Let me know what you want via THIS thread and also confirm whether I promised you another game previously. sorry for the delay. I'm so far behind with this project I haven't sent out keys to several community members who've already won keys. All will be sorted when I can summon the strength to sort them. At the moment I'm spending a considerable amount of time helping my two kids with their revision. Creating revision papers, marking past papers and having tutorials with them. (several hours every day at the moment. My son needs 2 A's and a B to get into one of the UK's top pharmacy schools. He's been offered a place if he gets those results. His AS level exam for Chemistry last year was a minor disaster, just missing out on a C; (I suspect his writing was partly to blame as I've been having difficulty reading his past papers this year. and know that examiners do not spend time trying to decipher students writing and will mark them down if they cannot read what has been written, even if it is correct). He needs at least a B, so I've been concentrating on Chemistry as I used to teach chemistry years ago. His biology also needs some work (I taught biology to a level). My daughter is now at the start of her GCSE exams and has three days of double exams from Monday, with Physics, English literature and math, so I've been doing the physics and math with her. Both have improved, so I'm hopeful that they will do well. My wife is doing her English Lit as she is familiar with the set books that she's had to read :)

This is such a cute game! I'd play it longer but all the animations flash for me. Anyone have any suggestions on how to stop this? My eyes hurt but I'm not sure if it's just the animations or if the game itself is also flashing. The match3 section seems fine but I don't think my eyes would hurt as much from just the animations. The left part of the screen flashes throughout the game though and maybe that's why.

It was a bit of a surprise to find that the boxes move so this is not like playing tetris. I suppose it has some physics game elements.

Also, does anyone understand how the orbics disappear? Three touch, lightning flashes between their eyes and some may or may not disappear. Is there a trick to this? The way they line up or something? And to make this even more confusing, sometimes they don't touch but they look at each other anyway and some may or may not disappear.

Nass, some of them need to be hit more than once. Look at the box around them to see that some are different.

JB,
I do realize that the metal boxes take more hits. However I'm talking about right at the beginning when all the boxes are wood. I think one box out of three went with my first drop. I thought there was a trick to it because all three went so rarely. It wasn't until I went searching for the trick (Do all boxes need to be facing the same way? Do they disappear better if they're in a certain configuration?) that I realized that all three boxes are supposed to disappear every time.

Thanks for the response though because it's helpful for those who think the problem started while they were playing, not realizing about the silver and gold boxes.

WOW!! Another way cool match 3 with a twist.
Very interesting match 3 game play and physics combination. It kept me engrossed for over an hour before I realized how long I had been playing!
Try it, you'll love it.

None of the GOTD games will install anymore. They used to install just fine up until a month or so ago but now I get the activated successfully message which I close and no program installation. I am running Windows 10 Professional. Could it be due to a Windows update? Any suggestions? Thanks for your service.

Hi John,

Please excuse the delay in replying, I've been helping with my kids revision all afternoon and into this evening. I assume you have already tried turning off your security temporarily? Also try booting the computer into safe mode with networking. That will help to discount conflicts with other programs running in the background when windows boots up normally. If you still cannot install the games after trying to install again, immediately check the event logs to see if there are any error messages related to the installation. with respect to Windows updates. I've got all of the latest updates and have no problems installing the giveaways. The last time I had issues was last summers following a rebuild where I had to replace the mother board and graphics card after my daughter trashed my computer. When I rebooted a little known security program that I'd previously disabled ( a giveaway from last March April 2016) somehow re enabled itself without my knowledge. It wasn't obvious and when I check task manager I missed seeing it was running. I ended up contacting Windows help and had one of their techs connect to my desktop becasue I thought it was something to do with windows after changing the motherboard, but it wasn't. The tech guy found the issue on less than a minute by right clicking and found in the context menu a security program , which when deleted allowed me to install giveaways.< /blockquote>

Downloaded and installed okay and looks like a fun game.

I like match3 stuff and it's nice to see something different.

Thanks. GGOTD and MPC.

install went ok. no problems.
I use sticky passwords and I wanted to import them into your password software. seems like keepass or 1password are the only ones I can import.
think I will pass on this one.
