Moderation will be sporadic over the coming weeks because both of my children are now at the start of their exams. My sons are extremely important becasue the levels he gains will detrimine whether he is accepted onto the Pharmacy course he was offered. He requires 2 A's and a B and definitely needs a lot of support during this time. My daughter (aged 16) started her GCSE exams last week . She still has around 25 exams to prepare for over the next three weeks). I may also not have time to post full reviews every week, especially when we get games on Friday and Mondays as well, though I will always endevour to post something, even if it's just a brief statement and some images and video links. We have another Steam based game tomorrow with thousands of keys available. It's a popular game with loads of positive feedback from thousands of community members and is worth almost £9.

Please only post comments about today's game giveaway; other comments either inappropriate, or not about today's game will be deleted at the moderator or administrators discretion; however a little light banter among community members and with the moderator to keep this a friendly place to visit is acceptable and welcomed. All comments not specifically about today's game giveaway will be judged by the moderator and if deemed not appropriate, will be deleted with no explanation. Please see the end of this review for a link to more details about posting comments, other game deals and other links. If you need to contact the give away team you can do so HERE and if you're unsure about posting comments the moderation policy is HERE and the FAQ's thread is HERE.

Suggestions:
Whether you like or dislike 7 Artifacts please give some feedback about your opinion of today's game giveaway, for example, what you liked or disliked about the game, and how it could be improved from your point of view. If you don't like this genre at all, please explain why. What improvements would change your opinion? There are thousands of subscribers to the game giveaway of the day every weekend which makes this an ideal forum for giving developers ideas as to what their consumers (i.e you) would like to see in a game. For example, you could suggest extra content such as better or more original mini games, or a level editor that you would like to see that would make it more appealing to you. Maybe you think the graphics are a little dated and are in need of re skinning, or maybe you've just had enough of the genre and want to see something different or something with more originality? Giving such feedback instead of saying nothing or just saying this game is rubbish or good may bring more developers to the site, which could mean more and better games.

Would you give away thousands of copies of a game (or extra content for a game) to a community that complains all the time instead of giving useful feedback? It only takes a few moments of your time. This site could be transformed if only the community would be more forthcoming in their opinions of the games they are getting for free instead of complaining about the way this site has changed or that they don't like Steam games. If something isn't for you then move on to the next giveaway, or check out the extra's section at the end of this review; you never know, you may find something that interests you.
If you miss today's game giveaway you can always get the game via MyPlayCity 24/7 HERE.
, or If you prefer to purchase the game you can get it via big fish games HERE. It costs £2.99/$2.99 if you are a new subscriber otherwise it's £7.70

Four shortcuts are installed to the desktop. three of which can be safely deleted (Play Online Games, MyPlayCity Games and shortcuts to a free online game which vary each week). Also, if you don't like icons installed to the quick launch task bar, make sure you uncheck the box when the additional tasks window appears (after the Select Start Menu Folder window)

The Game:
Ancient Greece has been the setting of many a casual desktop amusement, and once again it does due diligence in 7 Artifacts. A pattern-making puzzler that’ll challenge your mind as much as it will your patience, the game scores with a stunning presentation and range of interesting extras. Unfortunately, it’s also not the sort inclined to push the bar, relies mostly on gimmicks to engage the player and boasts less than stellar translation work, making the title a fun, but ultimately fleeting diversion.

Per a tale told via scrolling text superimposed over workmanlike still pictures, you’re Lydia, apprentice to the sage Arcanius, who’s called upon to help make sense of a mysterious parchment and chest of jewels. Your fellow mortals suspect a conspiracy – it is a time when mischievous gods wreaked havoc on mankind, after all, according to historical legend – and it’s up to you to decipher the conundrum.
No brainteaser-style challenges here though, unless you count memory-based mini-games, which appear periodically. This puppy’s a straightforward match-three mind bender cast in the classic mold, as you consistently attempt to swap two gleaming gemstones at a time to create horizontal/vertical rows of three or more like-colored baubles, which then disappear from play. Per usual, higher situated gems (each board’s a grid of stones set atop a bland, non-interactive background image) then fall down to close any gaps, offering up potentially massive chain reactions. And, of course, letters appear randomly at the top of rows on occasion, with your goal being to bring them to the bottom of the screen before a ticking timer strikes midnight.

Neither particularly interesting nor innovative in terms of gameplay basics, 7 Artifacts shines for its first-rate presentation, including both attractive visuals and a soothing orchestral soundtrack. Also of note: The multiple treasures referenced in the game’s title, which can be accessed by creating multiple matches using the same type of jewels in succession.
Remove several rows of green emeralds, for example, and the "Herald of Fortune" artifact is activated, generating random bonuses on-screen that can be tapped for gem-clearing aid. Obliterate the blue diamonds associated with an ice-based artifact instead, and the entire display freezes, letting you swap any gems you like, setting yourself up to reap huge rewards when the play field thaws out seconds later. Other relics blow up random gems in the middle of the screen, destroy petrified jewels or summon ghosts who, when freed by making matches using the stones they inhabit, allow you to access useful hints.
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Taken in tandem with power-ups – created by matching four or more gems in one fell swoop, and yours to utilize with a click of the mouse – it all makes for an enjoyable, if relatively short 50-stage ride. Then again, even with helping hands like explosive gem-clearing meteors; horizontal, vertical and cross-shaped row-clearing lightning bolts; wild tiles that match with any jewels; and gem-repainting elementals, the adventure is hardly groundbreaking stuff. Mind you, the story line, told in pidgin English (seriously, you’d think someone fluent in the language would at least consider playing these games once or twice before publishing them) won’t captivate either. Nor will expert-level enthusiasts find their skills especially taxed to boot, since new letters can only appear at the top of stacks with available openings, and a clever player can effectively control their incoming placement.
Regardless, in terms of enjoyment factor and overall production values, we can’t fault the title – it delivers precisely the sort of thrills and spills you’d expect from a routine outing in such a well-populated category. But outside of audiovisual elements and the artifact system, the game never attempts to excel, and as such comes across as cute, but also wholly forgettable in the grand scheme of this year’s holiday shuffle. Try before buying, and see if it’s to taste – there’s much to like about 7 Artifacts, but plenty of other games pull off its shtick better, and that’s all we have to say about that.

Other Reviews and Videos of 7 Artifacts:
You can see community reviews of 7 Artifacts HERE and more information in the Big Fish forums HERE.
You can see some videos of game play HERE and HERE and a slideshow of 55 in game images of bonuses, tutorials and part of the story HERE.
Conclusion:
The Sound and graphics are excellent (though a little dated as this is a 10 year old game and with frequent combos you can build up some high scores. Also, the user interface is easy to navigate. That said the game is a little too gimmicky and the translation to English is poor, though that shouldn't detract from the actual game play. Personally I wont be playing this much as I prefer the Match Three RPG combo to straight forward Match three's. Plus I have much better versions still to play.

Useful Information not related to today's game giveaway:
The problems section that used to be posted here in the Game review is now included in the Game Discussion FAQ's thread; which you can find HERE.
I've updated the games section that used to be posted with the review. The thread is now called 'Weekly round up of game deals', formerly the games section of the weekly reviews. You can find the new thread (which I've posted in the sticky section of the game discussion forums to make it easier to find if you are perusing the game discussion forums) HERE.
The rest of the information that used to be posted here can be found in the forums HERE. Don't forget, if you have an account with DOT.emu, you need to download any games you have before June, when the site closes permanently. Finally, check out Delenns thread over in the forums HERE. There are games available for free, some of which are limited to the number of free keys available.
The following information was taken from the previous time this was given away. Problems with duplicate keys or completing tasks, please contact the giveaway team HERE, and/or also the developer. Take a screen capture of the message you get either after completing all the tasks and/or when trying to activate the game on Steam, so that you have proof of the issue. The developers email can be found at the bottom of the developers web site HERE. I cannot guarantee a key would be given, but it's worth a try. The developer has given away keys previously and seems a decent guy

HI,

I like that companies games and have a couple. You learn something if you like, as you play and the graphics are good! This one was very simple so far. Mainly match 3 plus. I have played awhile and have not proceeded more than match playing. I'm sure it gets more difficult, the more you play. It downloaded quickly and opened easily. The custom cursor was the best of the graphics, but had too much of a tug, so went to regular cursor. There is a lot of interchanges with the apprentice and elder, but moves along pretty fast. Thanks for another good game! and have a great week! Lee

Win10 64bit Home. Game loaded and installed great. Actual playing the game gave me a window display. Went into Properties and clicked on Override DPI display and the game played full screen. All in all a good game for time wasting days. It reminded me of another game similar to this, cant remember the name.

Downloaded fine and installed great as well. Had same display issue as Majory above solved same way: properties- compatibility- dpi adjusted.
Fun game moved slow in the beginning but difficulty has increased with levels. Fun and challenging. Thank you for the game.

Retiring for the night. Will continue to moderate in the morning. don't forget there is a Steam key giveaway tomorrow. Although there will be thousands available, the steam community hear about the giveaway very quickly and head over to claim a key, so, make sure you are early to avoid disappointment. If you hgave any issues with the game, check the FAQ's thread HERE first. If you cannot resolve it, or have problems after the giveaway has ended post in the forums. Good night.

Enjoyable game – downloaded and installed ok on Windows 10. Had a display issue as the screen displayed was too big. I had to go into properties and on the Compatibility tab click the Override high DPI scaling. It was good after that.

Game will not load. Screen 'stuck' on 'loading game...' , system not responding. Also, on other link given below by lidl1 also cannot load...on execution, get error. I am running windows10, tried compatibility modes, still same problem.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

If it's happening with both versions, it's probably something conflicting with the game on your system. Try updating all the drivers responsible for graphics i.e your graphics card/chip drivers, Direct X and OpenGL drivers as well. It could also be something running on your computer that is causing the issue. Do you have enough RAM. Lock ups like you descr9be could indicate your computer is using the maximum memory. Try shutting down a few unnecessary back ground programs and see if the game will run.

I have been a follower of game give away of the day for years & have been grateful to receive many free games that I really enjoy. But since the my play city games have been added (weekly) my Norton virus protection blocks the install stating: Auto-protect blocked this heuristic virus. I've used Norton for years and have to trust they are capable of recognizing potentially unsafe files from accessing my computer. Its very disappointing though as I've loved looking to see what you have offered every weekend. And have always been grateful for the hard work involved in arranging free games to download. When I do a virus scan of the download file it says no threats found. But on the install Norton blocks the process & says: Auto-protect blocked this heuristic virus. I have found that some my play city games that have been allowed to install have many links in the folder to take you to the my play city site or many games on the site. On the few games Norton has allowed I've just deleted those short cuts from the folder. Its very disappointing as I have looked forward to checking your games out for years. But its at the point I just can't trust the games that come from my play city. :-(

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi Weeg, thousands of community members do trust the games given away here. The giveaway team have always ensured games given away have been throughly tested for malware. The MyPlayCity developers cottoned onto the idea of giving away games from other developers about 10 years ago. What they do is add some extra code so that whenever you turn off their games your browser is redirected to their site. This earns them money, some of which is paid to the developer of the game you downloaded for free. That way they (MPC), the developer both get money and the community member gets a free game. What Norton is detecting is the Themida wrapper that the giveaway team use to protect the game from hackers. This was introduced 3 or 4 years ago, when it became obvious many community members were taking the unprotected executable from the Temporary folder found in the hidden AppData folder. With that you were able to install any giveaway game whenever you wanted on any computer. The Themida wrapper stopped this. However, Themida code can also be used to hide malware, so, some anti malware programs will block the installation and give a warning of malware. The games givenaway here and games directly from MPC are totally safe. However, it's your choice not to install them. I've said many times, to get around the issue you can do one of three things. 1) ... White-list the giveaway files with your anti malware program, 2) ... Reboot in safe mode with networking then install or 3) ... temporarily turn off your security until the game has been installed. That said, it could also be the low level adware that is still present in the MPC games. The giveaway version has had most of it removed, but some does still remain as evidenced by the ad you see while the game is loading. Otherwise it's exactly the same as the original game. The game giveaway has been operating since early December 2006 and has never given a game away that was infected with malware.

weeg, I must share with you the fact that I had to remove Norton from all my computers and find a different product because it found so many false positives as to be totally aggravating. I tried several others with good success and I can tell you that Total Defense Security asks you in real time if the file is known good (as this game giveaway wrapper is) and adds it to your white list of acceptable files for future use. I have so far found Total AV to be flawlessly protecting my computers. You might want to research some alternatives for yourself, see https://www.top10bestantivirus.com/.

Regards from a happier camper.

I totally agree with you Buster, I used to use Norton many years ago (back in the late 80's/early 90's when it was one of the best), before it was sold off and destroyed. One of the worst big names around these days.

I don't care for Match games, and for some reason, I just loathe Gem games in general (partly because I always find something else unappealing - they're like a red flag, I guess).
I've seen this one around, and it sems like it might be good for someone without my biases, and different from the usual.
Thanks for the offer!

I am using Win 7 pro 64. downloaded quickly, used Winrar. This is a beautiful game. I don't care for the fruity, looking match 3's, this has great action and no hangups for me. I still have not figured out how to get out of the relaxed mode but I have only played for an hour. Overall I would give it a solid 8 and will be spending several hours zoning out with this game.
Thank you,
Debbie

D/l'd and installed fine on Win 8.1. Really tried giving this a fair try, after yesterday's Match 3 (sort of) which I didn't like at all. Will keep this one for a while since I like that it seems to be getting a little bit harder, the artifacts are kinda fun (though I'm not sure I'm catching exactly what one of them does, the others are coming in handy), and though I'm finding the "mini-games" extremely easy to the point of moronic, I'm still early in the game and maybe they get more challenging. I did read online that a lot of people complained that if they closed the game they lost all of their progress, which would be a total deal-breaker for me, but I played through Stage 9 and so far it seems to save my place, but maybe had I closed it earlier, it wouldn't have. Will try some more tomorrow.

But basically, I'm finding this kind of boring. I do like Match 3 (although not as much as I LOVE HOG/adventure and brain-teaser type games), but maybe having 2 similar ones in a row (though yesterday's wasn't a classic Match 3 as it had some geometry to it), or maybe having settled on Fishdom: Frosty Splash as my go-to Match 3 once I decided to forgo the aquarium building and just play to see how high I can get my points (2,800,000 so far...), I'm just Match 3'd out unless something has a real grabber of an extra gimmick or at least challenging and interesting mini-games. Yesterday's went in the recycle bin; today's will be a keeper for now, so I can give it a chance to get more interesting. Also kinda enjoying Mermaids, which I didn't get a chance to review last week.

Thank you for your feedback. I agree with you. I found it became a little tedious after a while. I much preferred yesterdays match three.

Your security may be blocking it due to the Themida wrapper. You can try one of the following to get the game to install properly. 1) ... Downloaded in about 10 seconds on my Win7/64 machine, installed with no issues.

About all I can say is, not bad for an old game. Colorful graphics, smooth gameplay. If you've played any match-3s in the last 10 years this will feel very familiar. I have avoided them for the last couple years, so this one is providing some nostalgic mindless entertainment.

Thanks to GGOTD, MPC, and Whiterabbit.

Good luck on your kids' exams, Stephen. 50 years later I still remember the stress and anxiety of those %#@! things. :-D

Thanks for your feedback Dan. Me to, which is why I'm trying to prepare my kids as well as I'm able. i got no help from my parents, thankkfully I was a keen student who needed no coaxing to work. When I was part way through my first end of year 1 exam (which we needed to pass to progress to year 2) at university, I remember almost passing out (possibly due to taking caffeine tablets for several days and hardly sleeping). Never used caffeine tablets again after that.

Nice review thanks. At first , from title, I thought was re-offer of those Greek themed Match games. Yes is bit along those lines but so far played with more style to me. Various choice of options gained by match win like multicolor.
Windows 10 no issues. Sound & music sliders, custom cursor. Seems ESC when finish a field will continue from there even tho game warns of losing level progress. Experiment with that first. So I liked it more than review 8.5/10 fans.

I agree, this game is dated. It moves too slowly and frustrates me waiting for all the action on the screen to finish before I can make the next move. I do love match 3 games, though.

Same problem as yesterday: Can't install the game programs. After unpacking the zip and installing, get the message that programs have been activated. Nevertheless, can't find the different programs.

Both setup.exe are dated 15.05.2017. Today is 21.05.2017.
