But sailors still believe in their last chance for salvation. The legend says that if you underwent a shipwreck with no hopes for reprieve, you must jingle coins. And then you will behold the Flying Dutchman – the Ghost Ship. Its crew will take you wherever you want to go in the world. But for each day you will pay gold. If there is no gold left, you have to play a game with the crew of Flying Dutchman – the game with your life at stake. Victory will assure enough gold till the end of the day. But defeat will make you a prisoner of the Flying Dutchman…forever!

Thank you to all you community members who have taken the trouble to post comments. In particular check out Corylea's comment as they show you how to brighten up the game board. I was very impressed. You will need a copy of Photoshop or another suitable photo editing software. you can get Adobe CS2 which contains Photoshop v9 totally for free now from Adobes site. Check it out HERE

For those who dislike the look of the game or who find it hard to distinguish one game element from another, this is a VERY easy game to mod. All of the graphics files are available in dds format, and five minutes in Photoshop produced this:

Flying Dutchman Game Modded photo FlyingDutchmanModded_zpsolx2ecee.jpg

If you'd like to mod the appearance of the game, the game elements are in the GameBlock_02.dds file, and the background or game board is in the GameField_01.dds file, both of which can be found in the TheFlyingDutchman_Game\DATA\EnemyData folder. Be sure to back up any files you change, and save any changes you make in DXT1 format. (You'll need the free Nvidia plugin for dds for Photoshop.)

That is really cool. I was just saying to Watcher immediately below your comment (hadn't read yours) that a level editor would be a brilliant addition. Being able to change the look of the tiles etc would change many community members opinion of this game. Thank you for posting this info. I'm impressed. Never thought to check the files to see if you could edit them, even though I often suggest changes to the music. I wonder if some of the background images are replaceable as well?

Reply   |   Comment by Corylea  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

Yes, those images are also replaceable or editable; just about all of the images are available in the files.

I love it when games include the files in editable format, so modders can change anything they don't like; it's one reason why I play PC games instead of console games.

........................Moderator Comment..........................

Yeah, I agree with you. I have over a terabyte of custom made maps and mods for one of my favorite games and have been downloading mods for another game I used to play several years ago (Fallout New Vegas), which I've decided to revisit becasue I only ever played the vanilla version. I've downloaded about 100GB of mods just for that game and have only just scratched the surface. Same with many other games. I like the Steam workshop becasue you can just subscribe to a mod and it is automatically included in your game. I bought an XBox 360 about the tiome the XBox One was released. I only purchased it becasue it included several non PC games that I'd always wanted to play plus GTAV a year before it was released on PC. But i have never even bothered to boot the console up. Got involved in other games and by the time i tohught about it GTA V had been releasedo n PC, besides I object to having to pay an annual fee to be able to play my games, even if it is nominal.

To those that continue to have problems installing games from this site. Because the giveaway wrapper contains Themida code, some anti malware suites see the zipped file as a threat, so will block the download. It has been shown time and time again that disabling your security temporarily should solve the problem. there is no difference in how the games are downloaded now or previous to the update. I know many of you are dubious about turning off your security, but if you consider that the game giveaway site has been operating since Dec 2006. They used to give games away every day (minus the odd day when they were doing server maintenance, (then, when they changed to weekends only early spring 2008 they have given away games virtually every weekend since and no game has ever been infected with malware. The giveaway team check every game given away using several anti-malware suites before they are released to the community. The giveaway site has a very good standing with all the major search engines and the giveaway team do not want to jeopardize that by allowing malware ridden games to be given away.

To those who don't want a Facebook account, just go through the motions, i.e. click on the Facebook button, when the Facebook login window appears, just cancel it. The green download button will then appear and you can download as normal.

The Flying Dutchman

In Brief

A match 3 game with rather muted colors. It's not a high flyer, but all the basics are there making this a reasonable match 3 game, plus, unusually for a match three there are difficulty modes available for novices, casual players as well as veteran match 3 players. (Easy, Normal and Hard). There's also a timed and untimed mode.

Overall I'd give this game a 7 out of 10. The version number is v1.0.4. :)

Suggestions:

For those who find this game not to their liking, instead of posting a few words saying you think this is a waste of time, or other words to that effect, would you instead give some feedback detailing why you don't like the game and how could it be improved from your point of view. If you don't like this genre at all, explain why. There are thousands of subscribers to the game giveaway of the day every weekend which makes this an ideal forum for giving developers ideas as to what their consumers (i.e you) would like to see in a game. For example, you could suggest extra content that you would like to see that would make it more appealing to you.

If you miss today's game giveaway you can get the game for free HERE 24/7; however, please do be aware of the issues surrounding games from such sites compared to the game giveaway site - see forum post about problems and the weekly roundup of games, both of which I used to include with my reviews, (see below for links)

Introduction:

Are you fond of captivating legends about ghost ships, cruel pirates and distant lost islands with cursed chests full of treasures? The game The Flying Dutchman - In The Ghost Prison is based on the famous legend about the desolate frigate the Flying Dutchman, lost not far from the Cape of Good Hope. The legend told that the frigate was cursed to wander the oceans till Doomsday because of the captain's blasphemy. In 1641 the fierce storm crushed at the frigate, cold wind tore the sails and broke the wooden masts into pieces, the crew was shocked and frightened, they lost all hope of returning home. The captain's mate suggested that they lay anchor in the nearest bay until the storm passed, but the captain of the frigate was exasperated by such a cowardly suggestion and killed the mate to show his sole right to make decisions on board the frigate. He swore that the Flying Dutchman would go about the Cape of Good Hope even if they sailed till Doomsday. And his blasphemy was heard by heaven…

In the game The Flying Dutchman - In The Ghost Prison you find yourself onboard the frigate, you don't remember who are you and what are you doing there, but you know that you must be in London soon: the crew of the frigate will take you whatever you wish, but you need to pay… And when gold is left, it's time to dice with Death in the appearance of the violent captain…

If you wish to see the problems section, which I've now incorporated into the FAQ's thread you can find it HERE and the recent games deals (now called The Weekly roundup of Game Deals) is HERE. I've not posted the installation section yet, just not got around to doing so. In the meantime, if you have problems installing the game, just post a comment here, thank you.

The Game:

The Flying Dutchman is a basic match three with decent graphics. It’s not Treasures of Montezuma, Atlantis Rising, 4 elements or Fishdom, but it’s decent enough for me to keep it in my games library. When I read the reviews over on Big fish I got the overriding impression that most negative comments were towards the ‘drabness’ of the graphics. That said I actually found the graphics were decent and well done. It’s not brightly lit up like some match threes, more like subtle shades of brown, but it fits in with the theme of the game.

flying dutchman 004
flying dutchman 005
From the options menu you can select from three different difficulty settings Easy, Normal and Hard as well as adjust the screen resolution from between 640 x 480 through to 1600 x 1200. There’s the usual sound and music sliders. You can create multiple profiles. Once you’ve created your first profile you can then choose between two different modes of play, Quest, which is time limited and Relaxed which isn’t. The timer is a barrel of gunpowder with a fuse.

There is a help section that tells you how to play the game. The last time this was given away Suki recommended that you read the help section prior to starting the game as it's not always clear what you need to do. Briefly, in timed mode you have to collect all the gold coins hidden under the dark colored decking of the Flying Dutchman by creating matches of three or more blocks. We all know how to play match three’s so I won’t bore you with the mechanics of the game. Clearing away matches of three or more is akin to scrubbing the floor of the decks. Once you’ve cleared the deck of all coins in timed mode or scrubbed the deck in un-timed mode the level is complete. As you progress through the levels you will meet ghosts. If you create a match next to a ghost the match will be cursed and frozen or locked (depending on whether it wears a red or blue headband for a certain amount of time, but if you can create matches of three ghosts you can destroy them. Destroying these ghosts earns you very generous bonuses (500 points). You’ll find four different power ups, the bomb that destroys all nearby objects, holy water which removes curses, holy fire destroys all the ghosts of pirates and lightning that destroys all objects in the line that it is activated into. To activate a power up you just have to move it to the next tile. Every time you activate a new power up a note on it’s function will pop up. You can turn off these messages if you wish by un-checking the box at the lower left of the message.

517448 the flying dutchman in the ghost prison w
517453 the flying dutchman in the ghost prison w
Completion of each level earns you a part of a treasure map that is divided into 42 pieces. Once you’ve collected all 42 pieces you then get to do the treasure hunt, which I’ve not played through to, so can’t tell you what it is. I presume more levels. You can follow your progress on the levels map. At the end of each level you get a report of how many gold coins you’ve collected, the number of bonus points, collapsed objects and ghosts. To proceed to th next level just click on OK.

Conclusion:

If you are going to comment on this game please leave useful feedback, be it positive or negative, and suggest other things you'd like to see that would make playing this game a more positive and/or enjoyable experience.

The Flying Dutchman is a reasonable match three. There’s nothing outstanding about the game, but IMO it’s worth keeping, especially if you are into the match three genre. If not, there are far better free match three’s available from various sources. You’ll find some of the best match threes over at MyPlayCity as well as a few other free game sites such as Toomky Games, Gametop and FreeGamePick, but, as always, be careful when installing as you may end up with toolbars etc if you don't uncheck the boxes. :) The addition of the ghosts adds an extra challenge to the game and can often confound your quest to complete the level. I was stuck on one level for ages due to the ghosts, lol. They add a difficulty that's not always present in some match three games.

Scoring:

Game play: 7

Graphics: 7

Audio: 7.5

Re-playability: 7

Originality: 6

Fun Factor: 7

Chill Factor: 7

I've added more categories to the score board, but I won't be giving an overall average score based on all the categories listed above because each holds a different weight when comparing each category . Overall, I'd give The Flying Dutchman an 7 out of 10.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the developer Star Ashes for giving The Flying Dutchman for free today and to the game giveaway team for finding yet more games.

Extra information:

The problems section that used to be posted here in the Game review is now included in the Game Discussion FAQ's thread; which you can find HERE.

I've updated the games section that used to be posted with the review. The thread is now called 'Weekly round up of game deals, formerly the games section of the weekly reviews. You can find the new thread (which I've posted in the sticky section of the game discussion forums to make it easier to find if you are perusing the game discussion forums) HERE.

The latest free game over on Origin has changed to the excellent FPS game Medal of Honor Pacific Assault. It's a little dated compared to the latest FPS games, but is still a great game with excellent graphics. It was released around 2005 so should easily play on most computers of today.

You can get it HERE. Please note that you do require the Origin game platform to be able to download and install the game.

If you are having problems installing the game check the thread I've linked to above. If you can't find any fixes check the comments made below and over the last few weeks for suggestions. Thank you.

Hello WhiterabbitUK and GOTD
Lets hope the next game is Star Ashes INCINERATE. I downloaded Egyptoid2 and it is an EXCELLENT game, I really enjoy it, Incinerate looks as if it could be similar in nature.
Thanks

I also found the music unobtrusive and for once found myself playing the game with sound. I appreciated the comments about changing the graphics and the photoshop access to be very helpful.

:) Photoshop has been free for at least three years now. not only do you get Photoshop v9 but you get everything that was included in the second edition of Adobe's Complete Suite including Adobes Premier video editing suite.

I found the muted graphics soothing and fittiing with the tenor of the game. I remember a game offered here years ago where things were so muted, I actually could not see the symbols for the match 3. I was pleased to see that this wasn't anything like that! Even on the easy level, the challenge of freezing tiles and/or jailing tiles occurred quite quickly, but so did the earning of bonuses to help destroy barriers. A suggestion, I use my laptop and touch pad all the time and found the game cursor for this program to be somewhat clumsy and awkward. I think offering the option of using my own cursor/pointer would make the game more appealing and seamless.

Installed the game just fine but it refuses to run and crashes on start up.

.........................Moderator Comment.............................

Hi Robert, try compatibility mode, check the play as Admin and change the OS to XP. That may solve the problem. If neither of those changes solve the problem it could either be a conflict with something you are running in the back ground or a resolution issue with your monitor settings. f the problem persists check your event logs immediately after trying to boot up the game to see if there are any messages related to the issue. If there are and you can't figure out the problem, post the error messages here. hopefully I or someone else may be able to solve the problem.

Have it from an earlier giveaway. Limited voting on Big Fish, doesn't seem to have grabbed many people, but no negative reviews there. Some pointed out that it's samey, with the same layout and pieces and overall look over and over, but the mechanics of the challenges increase as you go on. Different board types might help, or at least break up the monotony a little bit. I'm a probably better than average match 3 player, and I find it on the challenging side, partly because I'm not sure I've grasped all the mechanics of optimizing the various bonuses and effectively minimizing the impediments which crop up.
I would say the challenge is what recommends this one, and I would encourage match 3 fans to give it a test drive. Thanks GGOTD, Stars Ashes, and Whiterabbit.

........................Moderator Comment..........................

Thanks for your feedback Watcher, appreciated. I do think the drabness of the game puts some players off the game, but as you have found, persevering, shows this to be a challenging match 3. We have enough colorful and power up ridden match threes to keep us entertained. what I'd like to see is a level editor and the ability to add or remove power ups, change the look of the tiles, import images etc into the game, and like Reflexives ricochet Infinity and previous versions of the game (apart from the original) be able to share your custom levels with the community through a site where you can upload your creations. Within a year of the first Ricochet game with level editor being released and the original owners creating an upload site there were over 40 000 custom made levels divided into level sets of between 10 to 100 levels per level set. Some of those level sets were better than the original game. When they created the last iteration of the game, i.e Ricochet infinity, they made it easier to get any custom made level by accessing them directly from in game.

I've never seen a match three released with a level editor. It should be possible as all the editor is is a cut down version of the game engine that the game was made with.

Thank you for today's game! I actually don't mind the muted colors (and fairly non-exciting music) as it provides a nice break from the frantic mood of some of these games, especially on a Sunday morning :). I just started it but it seems to play smoothly; I'll have to see how frustrated I get with the ghosts, as mentioned by WR, once the games get harder.

One thing I don't like is that it somehow knew my name. I assume this is from them reading other games I have installed in that directory because it is only my gaming name, and that just feels like an invasion of privacy to me; although the result is identical to if I typed it in, I just always feel queasy by any install that feels free to look at other files on my computer!

........................Moderator Comment..........................

Check out Corylea's post immediately above yours. If you've got Photoshop or another program similar you can change the colors to your liking. You can actually get Photoshop 9 i.e. Adobe CS2 for free via This Link

Also, the music files which are of the .ogg format can be exchanged for music you like, though you would need to convert the music you wanted to use to the .ogg format using a suitable audio editor. There are loads freely available and we have been given several via the giveawayoftheday over the years. The music files (ambient_01.ogg, ambient_02.ogg and ambient_start.ogg) are found in the sound folder which is located in the data folder. The rest of the .ogg files are sound effects.

I have this from a previous give away. Love the options of timed/untimed and difficulty levels. We all play games for different reasons - some for the challenge and others to relax. I could make one more option suggestion though - allow the gamer to switch the color theming from the current muted shades (which DO fit the story) to one that has brighter more varied colors on the objects for those of us with old, tired eyes :)

I certainly love that GGOTD is still going strong but have noticed that there don't seem to be the variety offered as in the past.
I also really appreciate all the hard work that our White Rabbit puts into moderating and giving such good information about the games offered; it is what sets this site apart, in my opinion!!
I know that we had a HO game yesterday (but I already owned it) and I appreciate the effort
but I long for those days when games like Neverwood or similar adventure games were offered.
So here's my vote for more adventure games! Thanks so much in advance !!

........................Moderator Comment..........................

I'm sure we will get some different games eventually. The industry has suffered a lot over the last several years, with many developers going out of buisness or being bought out by bigger concerns. some of the biggest game houses that released some classic games no longer exist. This all started back in the recession of 2008, when the price of games dropped out. We used to pay $19.99 for most arcade games, not you can pick them up for a quarter of the price and even cheaper when they appear in one of the many indie bundles now being sold . At the moment there are around 60 bundles available. check the thread in the sticky section of the game discussion forums HERE for links to many of the bundle suppliers. i.e:

You'll find some amazing bargains, with upwards of 90% off a lot of the games. I know we used to get a much larger variety of games before we went to weekends only. I used to be quite blinkered w.r.t. the games i played. I loved breakouts, shmups, the odd platformer (such as Gish and Wik and the fable of souls) but most other genres I wouldn't even entertain. They just didn't appeal to me. The game giveaway put an end to that. Once I'd actually sampled many of these genres I realized I'd been missing out on a wealth of games. One of the reasons I post reviews, moderate these comments and administer the forums is becasue of all of the games i got thanks to the giveaway project. i ended up buying many of them, and I still ave some of the early games given away here due to their free standing nature.

I don't believe I have been able to download a game since you changed your format. I downloaded the doc pdf, but still didn't work

........................Moderator Comment..........................

Hi Bonnie, I don't understand why you are not able to download any games becasue the actual method of procuring the game is exactly the same. Maybe your security is blocking the download. That is usually the culprit. Have you followed some of the suggestions posted over the past several weeks, also check your event logs to see if there are any messages related to the inability to download. Check immediately after trying to download otherwise you may not be able to see the error messages as the even log records everything happening on your computer. Try downloading using a different browser, check to make sure Internet Explorer is not set to offline (even if you don't use I.E. it still needs to be set to online.

Thanks for old wonder, not a fave but decent. Have to give it one more try with settings to dumb simple since it gets mad annoyingly hard once the ghosts begin appearing. Gamer can start a lost level easily enough which helps. No redoing from Start. Does offer some variety to genre and the look does become ok once play a bit. Just know it will bug you at high settings as to game 'fairness' lol.

Can someone please tell me how I can get this without going through FaceBook? If I must go through FaceBook, I'll just leave this one alone! I would really like to try this game out, but that FaceBook thingy quite frankly makes me suspicious!

Nice to see a full review by you! I've missed them.

I won't be getting this game because I still have it from a previous time, but I just wanted to thank the creators for including both an untimed option AND difficulty options. I am not the greatest at special thinking, and this is one of the few match threes I've actually been able to enjoy all the way to the end, instead of having to abandon the game when the difficulty ramps up beyond my abilities. *Greatly* appreciated.

It's an old game released before either of those OS's were released, but it still works. In fact, all of the games given away here have so far worked on Win 8, 8.1 and 10 even though many don't include them in their requirements.

For several times I am not able to open the download anymore, after installation and unzipping. I only click on the setup (key) for later on to see that GGOTD has approved it, and then nothing happens.
Is there anyone who can tell me what to do in order to get games installed?
Disableing AVG and Windows Firewall makes no difference.
I still use Win 8.1, AVG free and Chrome.
So, if there is anyone who can help me out, that would be fantastic, thanks in advance!

When I do a 10 min temp disable AVG prior to running the exe it started running the install file after I got the approved message. Before the temp AVG disable mine machine acted exactly like yours. Sorry I can't be of more help but that is where I'd focus my efforts..

I can 2nd that FWIW...

I run AVG Free version in my XP Mode VM, where I expand or set up all the GOTD games [& many of the regular GOTD offers]. I temporarily disable AVG & the install goes fine. I was going to suggest that Maybe you have something else in AVG set to be more aggressive, fpo, as I recall more options when I originally installed & set up AVG, but I just took a look at the current version & don't really see any options that I'd think might help. Like TheKid I'm afraid all I can do is offer apologies that I can't be of more help.

TheKid, thanks for your reply. Your suggestion was perfect: the problem was AVG free. I stopped this program for 10 minutes, but probably I did not click ferm enough on the OK button, so therefore it did not work. Now I did it again and it is working!
Again, thanks a lot!

TheKid,
Thanks so much, I had the same problem yesterday and today. I'm now playing The Flying Dutchman thanks to you!

Will the short & useful user comments always appear above the 'review' from now on? I hope so as I regard it as a huge improvement

Sadly no ;) I just forgot to tick the appropriate box that keeps it at the top.

The whole point of me spending hours every weekend writing and posting reviews is to inform the community about the game, give them an idea as to whether or not it is worth downloading, link to the frequently asked questions that usually covers the problems most community members have here and of course to give theses comments a community feel plus I add links to other useful information including other games (for those who don't find the game interesting but are still looking for a game fix). For those community members (like yourself) who don't want the review, just scroll over it.

Difference being that the different users are using a variety of systems and have different tastes. No matter how long your review is it can never be as good as a few short comments from users with different experiences.

Each to their own Kevin, my comments will always be stuck at the top, but i'm sure you'll scrollover those. :)

My reviews were never meant to be the be all and end all, just a helping hand for those not sure about downloading the games. when this site first started up a decade ago. Many were still on dial up and also on limited downloads. I thought it a good idea to post an unbiased review so that those not sure about downloading would get some idea about the game. as for comments from other users, the more constructive comments the better as far as I'm concerned. I'd like to see a much higer proportion of commuity members posting their opinions of the games given away here, maybe then we would get more developers giving games away. That's another reason i post my reviews so that the developers (if they bother to check), can see we are interested in their games. No two community members will as you point out have exactly the same take on any game, so it's great to see the comments from the community. Sadly we rarely ever get more than around 0.01% of the giveaway community bothering to comment at all and the majority of those are not really comments that are useful to the developers or the community. Thank fully there are several community members that post their takes on the games we get.

p.s. please excuse the late reply.

Downloaded, Installed and activated with no problems on my Win10x64 machine. Used Edge browser. A match 3 game which is not one of my favorite types of games. Having said that, I WILL be keeping this one as its much more challenging than most match 3's. At least the first few levels anyway (all I've had time to play). It's graphics are a tad dark and a little .......... drab dare I say? But actually that's in keeping with the theme of this game. I'm playing in "Quest" mode (timed) and have just barely eked out win's on the first two levels. If you're not a match 3er then you might think about relaxed mode to start. Can't say much about the gameplay, a match 3 is a match 3 after all. There's a few power -ups, bombs etc,. but what I really like is the obstacles that certain combinations will throw up at you. They add a whole new dimension to the typical gameplay of match 3's and that by itself will be keeping this on my machine for awhile.

The only "suggestion" I could have for the Developers (Stars Ashes) is maybe make the cursor a little ......... crisper I guess is the word I'm looking for. It seems a little sluggish to me. All in all a fine game for casual play. I am in a sweat to get all the pieces of the treasure map lol! Thank you to StarsAshes and GGOTD for this slightly different take on an overworked genre of game.

I have this game from a previous offer, and despite being pretty much over Match-3's, I keep dipping back into this one because it is one of the better Match-3's --BESIDES FISHDOM! Am I right, Swamp Thing? :-)
