Tanks Evolution aka Tank Commander:
In Brief:
Tanks Evolution is a reasonable top down tanks game on the lines of Tank-o-Box. You can play solo or with two players locally. You can also use controllers, which if plugged into your computer will automatically be detected by the game. See the images for details of the key bindings for both players. There are forty different scenarios to complete divided into four theatres of war i.e. Jungle City, Arctic & Desert regions, with four levels of difficulty to choose from i.e. Easy, Normal, Hard & Insane. Fewer tanks, planes and missiles appear in the easier modes. The planes carpet bomb in later levels and on insane difficulty

The game is also known as Tank Commander. When the developer allowed the game to be given away via various free game sites like FreeGamePick and Gametop over a decade ago, the name was changed. I believe it was something to do with the commercial version (Tank Commander) not being affected by people knowing it was free via some sites; though back then, there was a lot more in-game advertising and tool bars included with the free versions.
The game was originally given away on the 3rd January 2007; one of the first games ever to be given away on the official game giveaway (we'd been given 27 games up to this point, starting on the 8th December 2006; however, there were a couple of games given away weekly over on the application side from the original start of the project back in October 2006 until the dedicated game side of the project was opened). The game received a positive 80% from 159 votes with 19 comments which you can see HERE

It was then given away a second time on March 2nd 2008, a few weeks before the game giveaway went to weekends only (due to the financial crisis). The game only received a positive 51% the second time around with 468 votes and 33 comments which you can read HERE
You can see a few videos of game play HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE
It's a decent little top down shooter that may be similar to Tank o Box, but in my opinion it's just a little better. It's not a game I'd play for extended periods, but it's an excellent tea/coffee break game; where 10 to 20 minutes is perfect for a session. Any longer at it may become a little tedious because there isn't a lot of variation in the game play..

Still it's well worth downloading IMO.

You'll find regularly updated details of all the reasonable game deals and freebies that I can find HERE;

Epic are giving away all three of the Bioshock games.

You can get the excellent Bomber Crew free from Steam HERE at the moment. I don't know when it ends, but soon I think?

Also Fanatical Games have added a lot more indie bundles (now 18) to check out.

Notes on Security
I scanned a zipped copy of the installed game using Virus Total and it found 2 hits (Malwarebytes & , MaxSecure) from 60 antimalware engines. These two are amongst only several antimalware suites that often tag Toomky Games compared to most better known and more reliable antimalware engines; so, it's very likely to be a false positive.

The downloaded executable 'may' include some low level adware that opens your browser to TooMKY Games home page after the game has installed and may place some shortcuts onto your desktop; these can be safely deleted once the game has installed.

The installation does NOT inject any malware into your system. When your browser is opened to TooMKY Games home page following the games installation, it earns TooMKY Games games some money, part of which is given to the developer of the game for allowing the game to be given away free. The giveaway version of Toomky games version has had most of the adware disabled.

If you're still not convinced of the games efficacy and want to be absolutely sure that the game is safe to install, please use a sandbox program first, to check that the game is safe to install before installing it to your C drive or other drives on your computer (assuming you have more than one drive).

Personally I've never had any issues with any of Toomky Games.

There are free sandbox programs such as Sanboxie, GeSWall, BitBox, Windows Sandbox, Bufferzone (a six month commercial license was given away via the applications side of the project back in December 2009 HERE), Shadowzone, as well as others. (You'll find them all on the same page from Techwhoop.
You can see the results of the installed games scan via the following link:

In a sense and this is going to sound weird, but I feel like there is some kind of Pac-Man gameplay here in a sense as you're moving around the map, except your shooting down enemies. and blocks to move through the maps.

This game also reminds me of Battle City, which can be found in one of the Namco Museum Archives Games on XBOX , Steam and other platforms. Here is a longplay video of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfixqYPonHw

I would err caution on downloading today's giveaway given the recent events in the news. The game has a degree of violence some may find offensive. You actually can run over the little things running around in the field, with the tank and see blood spatters on the field.

There was an option in the menu called Civilians which I thought unchecking it may toggle off the ability to do this but when I started a new game you could still do that with your tank.

All in all, I was just not impressed with this game. I'm not going to remove it as it's a freebie and low in file size but I don't think I'd go back and revisit this game anytime soon.

sailorbear510 aka Jason,

Thank you for your feedback Jason.

Yes Battle City is basically the same mechanic, without the civilians.

Volume 2 of the Namco archives is on sale with 75% off at the moment HERE (ends later today at 6pm UK/1pm Eastern) No doubt both volumes will be on sale again in the Steam Summer sale that starts in less than four weeks. For anyone interested Volume one can be found on Steam HERE; both are now on my wish list.
