This game downloaded, installed and ran without any problems.
I have no beef with it not creating uninstall or a desktop icon.
In fact, I prefer it that way.
On to the gameplay: The Simple controls worked the best for me as the other option was too slow. I had to tone down the sensitivity to about 3/4 the way and it was perfect. Only after reading it here, did I find out about the middle mouse button. The lack of control instructions was frustrating to me. I've figured out that the powerups are the little hazy dots that remain after killing some enemies. Sometimes you can get missile lock on targets, but I don't know how it works because sometimes it does not want to lock at all.

I would not call this a complete game but a work in progress. There is much that can be done to improve it. The gameplay also gets repetitive and the level scaling is too slow. I give it a 6/10. Definitely not a buy, in the state that it's in.

I also had a trouble-free download and install. When I start the game from its main menu, I get a title screen then a loud click or pop sound, the game screen vanishes, and Vista tells me the program did not end correctly. I tried the highest quality default settings, the normal settings, and some others, but all did the same thing. Very disappointing. Sadly, I forgot to set a restore point before installing so now I get to play "Figure out what it put in the registry" followed by a round or two of "What did it put on my hard drive". These games are not nearly as fun as I thought Star Warrior would be.....

#41, I noticed the same thing about weapons/shield. No instructions to tell you what weapons you have, you just have to figure it out. Even on level three, it is hard to hit the enemies on the easiest setting. I'd rate it about 6 of 10.

Thank you for today's game offer = I sure do miss new games to try! Since I am not a big 'shoot-em' gamer, I am passing on today's offer. AND, I am still hoping that you will give us another game offer tomorrow - please ??? Thank you for all you do GAOTD!

Thanks for the comments - sure hope that CCCP Games takes a few minutes to read about the issues with this program: no short-cut, controls, visual, game play, need to hunt files to uninstall, ect ...

My review of Star Warrior is here.

In related news, I'll be having spaghetti for dinner tonight.

>People who can't see past the right margin of this section

Uhh, on the right-hand side of the page, there are links to the administrative team's blog. A fairly old post has the headline: "Game Giveaway site - weekends only for now". Today is a weekend. Last week, we got games on that weekend. We will get no more games after Sunday until next weekend. Please understand this.

Very disappointing IMO. Downloaded ok, but installed slowly as well as hogging lots of resources. Once installed I had to make a desktop icon manually. Game was 'sluggish' in the way that it moved and seemed to require a LOT of ram, etc to run; which seemed odd to me that it was using so much and still running so sluggishly. I also (#8 BrianZachary)had trouble with not being able to see parts of the screen at several times. I was hoping that this would be a clone of a good classic space shooter game, but unfortunately it turned out to be nothing but a resource hog and a huge disappointment for me. Lastly, I had trouble uninstalling it and had to rely on my faithful ZSoft uninstaller to take care of cleaning it up for me.

BTW, since people are giving plugs on good 'must haves' here are a couple that I find you can't live without (both free):

ZSoft Uninstaller : http://www.zsoft.dk/index/software

DAP : http://www.speedbit.com/
** there is an upgrade to DAP that cost $, but I have used the free version for a long time and it has worked wonderfully.

Thanks all, good luck, and happy gaming!

It took several hours before my post #19 showed up so I didn't realize that the notes were missing. You can see those by following the link below to the games discussion forums where I posted my first post including the notes:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/3141

You'll find download links to pages where you'll find both the game download and a strategy guide as well as several videos to watch, so as to see if it's worth downloading.

Have a great weekend folks.

Have to give this a big thumbs down. Have downloaded it twice, activated it several times but it does not even attempt to install. There is no files on the hard drive (except the download), no link to click, no start menu item, in fact no anything. It didn't happen. Just as well judging by some of the comments especially regarding the problems with getting rid of it.
Typical, first game in ages that looks like fun but it doesn't work. I should have expected it after the number of other free downloads that turn into paid versions two or three weeks after installation that I have had lately. My friends have all deserted this site and I am thinking about doing the same as I haven't had anything good off of here for a long time.

The game works as advertised. The only think I can't figure out is what the alternative to 'simple controls' is. Also, if you enable joystick, the mouse doesn't work. The 1024x768 produces oblong planets instead of circular and it takes a little experimentation to get the options to the point where is playable (no lag) and has most of the eye candy (if you can call it that) on. I am sure there are more quirks, but I ran out of patience before exploring further.

The first person button (w or some joystick button) is never mentioned in the help and turning it on slows a game that was working well on third person mode.

When you start the game, you only have the left mouse button to fire. On the second level the right button (missiles) start to work. I haven't gotten to where the middle button (shield) works.

As most reviewers have pointed out, the first two levels are somewhat fun, but after that, the enemy just gets pounding and pounding and the middle mouse button hasn't been activated yet, so even in the most simple difficulty the third level becomes very hard very fast. Not a good thing.

Finally, there seem to be a lot of folks who thing the Games GiveAways are back to stay. It is my understanding that this is not the case, that the games will only be offered on weekends and today is Saturday :)

I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, but I thought that it is better they find out now than getting a lot of messages Monday saying "Where did GGOTD go?"

#37 - Appreciate you filling us in on your no doubt "going to be a busy day!" Pork chops were on sale? Damn, and I had to go and buy rump steak instead at only 15% discount off regular price! I have to do my washing too, and in fact, if I could just find someone to iron my shirts? It would give me some more time to investigate this game, and maybe see if I want to uninstall it like many seem to be doing...
Will be interested to know what else you are going to cram into that eventful day, Doggie. Thanks for the heads up, once again...

Installed the game with no problems. There is no install routine. You just extract it to a folder of your choice. That is it's greatest strength because you can easily delete it after you found out you wasted your time with this slug. The graphics were awful, game play so sooooooooo slow it was unusable. My suggestion is to skip this one and check whiterabbit's link at comment # 19. I'm sure there are plenty of games there that are much better than this one. I appreciate the offer GGAOTD but if you cut back the games to only the weekends why give us duds like this? This is the best you can come up with? A subpar offering from a publisher that does not even have a web site. I have downloaded nearly 9 GB of games from this site. I don't want to appear ungrateful. I truely appreciate all that you do for us. But you can do much better than this.

Another POS game that has no un-install utility and no start menu shortcut. It also has a cursor that is barely visible and crappy mouse control even with the sensitivity set as low as possible. I rushed through the install and wound up with permatabs installed to my Firefox browser with GAOTD opened in a permanent tab on my browser. I bet this comment will be deleted because of the negative content, so S U GGAOTD.

So many people announcing their future plans to download this (and other programs. Since that seems to be such a popular topic, ie what people intend to do (vs what they have done) here are some of my future plans as well (hope you are interested)...get a haircut downtown, do my shopping, wash the dog, pick up shirts from the laundry, clean up the attic, see if pork chops still are on sale and if so buy 2 lbs., put gas in the car, fix the broken step on back porch. More later.

My comment is the same as #14. This makes the 4th game That I've downloaded since you all came back from vacation that will download, activate, but that's all it will do. I'm so disappointed in the offerings lately. I'm on disability & I enjoy lots of games; I also have quite a lot of them that I have bought, but, My Daddy always said, you get what you pay for. This game, is NO GOOD!!! I may check back tomorrow(Sun, 20-Apr-'08) but have a feeling that this will be the game that's offered then too. If it is, I reckon, I'll just quit viviting your site for games or other software!!! I've now got to see where it's installed, so I can un-install it as it's not in add/remove!

Pretty weak wire frame shooter that just revolves in place.
Tried shooting anything that moves. Defender for sure.
Only key I found seemed to be W that acts like a Zoom toggle.
800x600 seemed more playable & reduce mouse sensitivity.
Keep the Folder structure-Install intact or may not activate.
Ok on Vista Home Prem. 5 of 10 rating.

The CCCP was a give away to me that it was Russian, but I at least thought there would be something there. Started trying to download a midnight and it just wouldn't take. Tried for almost 2 hours and finally went to their website (if you can call it that) and as #8 said, there really is nothing there. Still haven't been able to get it completely downloaded, so I think I'll just wait and see what comes tomorrow.

This looks like a fun game to me. Not much of a shooter type (I'm not a hard core gamer) this one will probably kick my butt at level one. MOUSE OVERSHOOT: First, this game has a joystick option and I would GUESS that explains the hyper-sensitivity. The options screen has a sensitivity slider which I set to zero; I then had enough control to actually get out ther and play a bit. Personally, when I want to play this game, and others like it, I go to Control Panel and reduce mouse sensitivity at the SYSTEM level which generally reduces the over-shoot to an acceptable level of accuracy. I get dizzy and disoriented anyway so my aim is off. I give this game a thumbs up even without a company homepage. Everybody has to start somewhere. Suppose these Russions are operating from a loft somewhere? Good for them. Good for us. We get the game, they get a name. Win-Win. :)

BTW - Download and install on Vista Home Basic with 512M RAM using the Safari browser worked both flawlessly anf FAST. No issues beyond the mentioned tweaks.

I played the first two levels of the game, and it was alright. It gave me the distinct feeling of "Meh."

It wasn't a horrible game, it wasn't great either. I'd rather be playing Geometry Wars, or a flash version of asteroids for that matter.

You're right. Even Revo Uninstaller can't uninstall it. I just went into where it's installed and manually deleted the game's folder. The next time I clean the registry, it should find any leftover files and delete them.

I've only just seen today’s giveaway. My internet browser was showing no game today. When I went to the forums they were basically yesterdays, so I cleaned out my internet cache and cookies and found that there was a game afterall. I've n getting the giveaway site routed to a site that sells patio's (?) Strange behavior. Anyway. It's a little late now for me to write a full blown review, so I'll just write my initial feelings about the game as well as point you to some alternatives:

When you boot up the game you can adjust the visual parameters of the game via the first options menu which is mainly devoted to graphics with three simple options normal good or perfect. You can tweak these by using the advanced options that allow you to toggle off several special effects such as rocket trails, sparkles, lens flare animated lights and more. you've also got anisotropic filtering, anti aliasing, motion blur and a few others. there’s also the option to use a joystick with this game.

Clicking on the Start button takes you to the main menu where you can further adjust the game through the second options menu which gives you the usual music and sound options as well as some control options. The game is controlled primarily by the mouse. On starting a game you are given the choice of four difficulty levels starting at novice through to veteran. Apart from the enemy coming at you a little faster there didn't seem much difference between any of difficulty levels, though I only played to level four in both novice and veteran.

The game is okay, but I doubt I would purchase it (If I had to) because there are better freeware alternatives in my opinion. Check out the following thread in the forums where you'll find a fantastic abandon ware title called Universal combat which you could say is the big brother to today’s giveaway. It's got better graphics and the game play is far better, though it is a large download which for those on dial up it may take all day to download; though in my opinion it's well worth it. See the notes section below for a link to universal combat and links to some video footage and a strategy guide. The link below takes you to a treasure trove of links for all types of space shooters, some freeware, some abandon ware, or online games and lots from Gametop that you'd normally pay nearly $20 for:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/2724?replies=17

Today’s game is a 3D space shooter where the spaceship you control is stationary within the sphere of action that you can see. You use the mouse (or Joystick) to turn in any direction you wish and use the left mouse button to fire your weapon. Personally I got bored after trying the game for the first four levels (twice I two different difficulty settings). There doesn't appear to be any power ups or ship upgrades, but you may very well get these later in the game. I think unless you're into space shooters this may be a little bit of a disappointment. I give it 6 out of 10 for reasonable playability and decent enough graphics, though as someone pointed out above, they look a little 90's. I'd try it and see. If you think its okay, then I'd certainly download Universal Combat.

Neat little game. Graphics are very nice but it's very demanding hardware-wise. It's fun but it feels somewhat unfinished, a tutorial or at least a manual/readme would be nice. What are all those HUD displays telling me? Do I have infinite rockets? Am I invulnerable? Why don't the HUD displays ever change? What's this repulsion shield I'm supposed to control with my middle mouse button?

Well, I am rather disappointed with this game.

The installation went smoothly, but as noted in the readme, I did have to go into the program's directory and send a shortcut to the desktop, which is fine.

When you first start the program, a small box pops up on the screen with 3 buttons: Start, Options, and Exit.

If you go to the options first, you can adjust a few things there to your preferences before the game starts. There are 3 predefined settings, or you can select your own.

Unfortunately, no matter which settings I used, when the game came up, only half of the game screen would show, sometimes less. I had to press the Windows button on my keyboard and use Task Manager to close the game because the Exit button in the in-game options was off the screen. I tried different resolution settings in the game's pre-start options, but it didn't matter. Only part of the game screen could be seen.

I thought maybe there was something I needed to do to fix this problem, maybe a patch or something I could maybe get from the publisher's site.

Unfortunately, it seems the publisher doesn't exist yet, or at least that's the impression I'm getting. If you click on the publisher's name on this page, CCCP Games, it links to this site. I decided to Google CCCP Games. This is their site:

http://www.cccp-games.ru/

If you take a look, the first thing you will notice is it's a Russian site. Translation works well, though. The top of the page says CCCP Games Coming Soon. Not a good sign. The third link down goes to their forums, but there's not much there and what IS there is nothing useful.

The game itself, the small part of it that could be seen, looks like it might be fun, but with the resolution problem and no apparent support from the publisher, I think I will have to uninstall it.

If anyone else can find a solution for the resolution problem, let me know.

Nice little game, but looks like something from the 1990s. Entertaining enough for a while, although I think kids would like it more than adults. First two levels pretty easy.....third level starts getting harder with faster attackers and more damage done to your ship. I like the way all controlling, shooting, and defending is done with the mouse. I rate it 6/10, so I'll give it a thumbs up.
