Solitaire: Victorian Picnic

The Game:
By the time I arrived back from archery, and after seeing the comments left, I decided it wasn't worth spending a couple more hours on a review of this game. I had started a draft, which is incomplete. All of the information you need can be found in the two help pages and the several tutorial panels that appear when you first start the game if you play through the novice section, they explain all that is required in this game. The following paragraph is the draft copy of my review, sorry I never finished it:

The shop allows you to purchase various items such as bonus's that enable you to change certain outcomes, for example, if the cards are going too well, you can purchase shuffles. This bonus moves all exposed cards bnack into the main pack and then is shuffled so that you get a different pair of cards exposed whenever you need to turn cards. You can also purchase jokers which can be used to emulate any card that is open. Once a card has been changed to a joker you can pair it off with any other card. Useful if you need to remove a card, especially one that may be blocking lots of other cards, finally you can buy a Mulligan. A mulligan is a second chance to perform an action, usually after the first chance went wrong through bad luck or a blunder. Its best-known meaning is in golf, whereby a player is informally allowed to replay a stroke, even though this is against the formal rules of golf.

You will find the occasional golden cards appear. These are special cards that give you points. If you remove all of the golden cards by pairing them off with cards of equal value in a level before you complete the level you receive the maximum number of possible points for that level and the score is carried forwards to the next level. There are also useful bonus cards that give you certain bonuses. That's as far as I got before I had to go out, sorry

MyPlayCity's description of the game:

Travel to the Victorian era and practice your skills in solitaire in the captivating card game Solitaire: Victorian Picnic! Are you a fan of sentimental novels where romantic girls and noble men are building relationship? Then, you probably like the novels of Jane Osten and the Brontës: Charlotte, Emily and Anne, where the main characters lived in bloom of the Victorian era. Have you always dreamt of traveling to the age of sense and sensibility, where the girls are pretty and naïve and men – noble and brave? Launch the game Solitaire: Victorian Picnic and enjoy the magnificent views of the such a romantic age! It’s high time to practice if you are skillful enough to join the tournaments of solitaire. Because all sorts of card games: both solitaire, poker and preference were in great request. Welcome to glorious England with the game Solitaire: Victorian Picnic! Explore various gorgeous locations and earn trophies! Just play solitaire and find two cards of equal value to get prize score and become the master of solitaire.

levels
newbie
The rules of the game are simple enough, you can remove the cards of the same rank regardless of their suit. Besides ordinary cards there are special golden cards. But if you manage to get rid of all of them before the cards return to the deck, you’ll receive the maximum number of points. During the game you get bonus cards with special mark – if removed, they give you extra coins or bonuses. Play the amazing card game Solitaire: Victorian Picnic and train your logic skills! But there are situations where you are stuck, use helpful bonuses to proceed. There are 3 of them: Shuffle, Mulligan and Joker. Shuffle will mix all the cards and place them to the game board again, Mulligan will cancel your last action and Joker will turn any card to Joker to help cards match. Prove your skills in playing solitaire and get a unique collection of rare trophies such as Correct Calculation for getting points in packs and others. Have fun while playing Solitaire: Victorian Picnic and admire the Victorian epoch!

Useful Information not related to today's game giveaway:
The problems section that used to be posted here in the Game review is now included in the Game Discussion FAQ's thread; which you can find HERE.

I've updated the games section that used to be posted with the review. The thread is now called 'Weekly round up of game deals', formerly the games section of the weekly reviews. You can find the new thread (which I've posted in the sticky section of the game discussion forums to make it easier to find if you are perusing the game discussion forums) HERE.

If today's game was not to your liking, you may find other games either free or for less than the price of a cup of coffee (from your favorite coffee house) via the 'Weekly Roundup of Game Deals' thread which I've posted a link to above, or HERE.
.
The latest free game over on Origin is still Nox (not changed for over 2 months so look out for a new game soon). You can get it HERE. Please note that you do require the Origin game platform to be able to download and install the game.

My Sunny Resort: Starter Pack is available over on Failmids Shareware-on-Sale site HERE

The Crew is still available via Ubisofts uPlay client, you need to have a free uPlay account to be able to access the free game. Once it's tied to your account, it's yours permanently. This is the last chance to get this excellent game from Ubisoft as the deal ends tomorrow, Monday 3rd Oct, when it will be replaced by another as yet undisclosed game, which I'll add here next week. I highly recommend this game, especially if you are into open world games and/or vehicle based games. The Crew usually costs around £25; here's part of the Crew's description:

''fine tune your ride as you level up and progress through 5 unique and richly detailed regions of a massive open-world US. Maneuver through the bustling streets of New York City and Los Angeles, cruise down sunny Miami Beach or trek through the breathtaking plateaus of Monument Valley. Each locale comes with its own set of surprises and driving challenges to master. On your journey you will encounter other players on the road – all potentially worthy companions to crew up with, or future rivals to compete against. This is driving at its most exciting, varied and open''.

To get the game you have to log into your uPlay account, then click on the banner that says Ubisoft turns 30. This should open a new page where you can get The Crew added to your account. The Crew is also a premium AAA game and well worth getting, especially if you like open world racing games. To get The Crew the shareware link I've provided above isn't actually necessary. You just have to sign into your uPlay account and look for the Ubisoft turning 30 link, or if you don't have a uPlay account create an account HERE. Click on the green Join the Club button, get your free account, then get your free copy of The Crew.

If you spend over three dollars in the Indie Gala store (they have some excellent bundle deals, but these are excluded from the offer) you will also get a free (Steam key) for the post apocalyptic game 35mm that usually costs £5.99 (the link takes you to the discounted games, the Steam copy link takes you to the 35mm Steam page). 35mm is a story about two travelers who set out on a long journey in the wasteland, which was created after a global epidemic. The disaster destroyed much of the world's population, the infrastructure went belly up and what was only remained in the memories of those who survived. In order to survive, you will have to adapt to the changes. You will have to play the character whose path runs through the deserted towns , cities , fields and forests of the vast country of Russia. You'll even discover a secret underground facility.

The Daily indie Games site (DIG) are still offering free Steam keys for Hacker Evolution Time Dimensions and Crystals of time. To get keys for these two games you will have to do similar activities as you do for those Steam games that have been offered for the past several months over on the game giveaway site. You can find those free Steam key deals HERE (Hacker Evolution: Time Dimensions and HERE (Crystals of Time).

Steam has some excellent card games available, for example The Hoyle Official Card Games Collection which is a collection of over 70 classic card games (with variations) such as Solitaire, Hearts, Bridge, Euchre, Rummy, Blackjack, Go Fish, Fan Tan, Oh Hell , Whist and War. you can even choose from an array of background, card designs and AI opponents for the non solitaire games in the collection. in my opinion this is one of the best card game collections available for PC, and is a measly £14.99 when not on sale (which it isn't at present). If you prefer the game as a non Steam version you can get it from several out lets for example Game fools HERE.
. If you prefer solitaire games there's loads of them available for example Solitaire Royale , Chef Solitaire: USA, Faerie Solitaire, Lapland Solitaire and Classic Fun Collection 5 in 1, the last one also includes other games such as Mahjong, Sudoku and G-Tris (a version of tetris) to name just a few.

Lovely peaceful game to fill in the odd few minutes between chores! Thanks for sharing. Just finding pairs gets a bit monotonous though - maybe it could be improved by making some games where you can use a card one higher or one lower than the card you want to remove?

Solitaire: Victorian Picnic
A game from MPC that downloaded and installed well on Win 10 Pro x64.
Know this game will not be for everybody, because of the nature of the game, but I love this one! Sometimes you need a relaxing simple to play game for those days when you need a distraction from everyday life, and this game fits the bill if you will for me. Thank you GGOTD and MPC again for this one, and a side note, I so far have not ran into the glitches others have mentioned, although it's such a nice day here (finally after 5 days of rain!) that I don't have a lot of playing time.
I download and install, then don't play until I do a quick defrag {use Auslogics as my DF'ger} and don't run into many problems (just jinxed myself I know, the next 5 games will for me now!) and play after that is done, on a really complex game I'll even do a restart some times, just something to keep in mind. Also on the MPC games, make sure you don't click on anything until the game starts, hope this helps some out there.

No problem with the install on Windows 10 x64. Nice relaxed play to it, which I really found enjoyable. Different layouts changed up the play a bit.

HOWEVER.... I found that all of a sudden I could not go to the next section because I had not finished the section I was on. I had - just hadn't found all of the golden cards (or in some cases, any of them....). That led to total frustration on my part. Don't know if it's a problem with the install or the way the game's designed. Either way, I am now grouchy and going to pick up my cards and go home - perhaps to try again another day.

Thanks for the free game and all you do GOTD team - and MPC.

Call me addicted ;-)

Installed without a problem under Win10 - I LOVE the victorian theme, could be a bit more of it in the graphics.

What I don't understand is: why I can replay the stock on some levels and on others only once?

All in all a calm game to play - and boy do I fight to get enough golden cards to go on.

Errr . . . "Jane Osten"? Never heard of her . . .

I was going to give this one a try until I discovered a few glitches like that one, and then read some comments.

It's possibly worth a shot if you're young and mad keen on simple patience games, but sadly - being too close to Victorian times myself ("Legendary"? No - they really happened!) - I'll give this one a miss today.

I shall pass the next week crocheting covers for unmentionables in the smallest room, and patiently wait to see what next weekend will bring.

;-P

Normally I do like Patience games but this one is a bit boring, of course I want to get through a level collecting all the special cards, but in times it seems impossible. Very few cards to match, in some cases 3 or 4, and also a few cards on the deck. This means that you have to play that level say 50 times or more and that's over the limit for me. Especially because all the levels are the same just match two of the same cards, level after level.

The game would be more interesting with some variety in that gameplay, there are enough possibilities in Patience.
The price of the bonuses you can buy is very high compared to the points you can earn per level.
The Victorian theme is just the background, it doesn't add anything for me. (it doesn't bother either)
I Played in windowed mode but you really have to move the mouse outside the mouse mat to click the cards, the paying field is very wide. I tried to set the mouse more sensitive but that didn't help either.

The game will stay on the computer ;) it's a nice game to just relax as it isn't timed.
Thanks for this game.

It's one of the reasons I never actually returned to write up a review of the game. I also found it rather boring, especially after playing Hoyles Official Card Games Collection yesterday after reading Xilolee's update on the game over on Steam. It has over 70 different games, or variations on various games with the ability to play against AI opponents, single player etc. Brilliant card collection with lots of configurability (not a real word, lol). today's giveaway just didn't inspire me at all. when I returned from Archery I had every intention of writing up a short review covering the main aspects of the game, i.e. mulligans etc, but after seeing most comments thought the game boring, and as I'd returned late afternoon, it seemed pointless spending a couple more hours on the review. The stuff I copied from MPC was sufficient.

On the Victorian era, I have an old canvas photo of my grandmother, taken at the end of the 19th century, with her kitted out in Victorian era clothing, lace up boots up to her knees (almost), but they were only visible becasue she was sitting with her legs crossed and her long dress had been pulled up showing one of her boots. Wasn't good of the photographer, but it's the boots that were the most memorable apart from my grandmothers face. (She passed away the same day that Lennon was shot back in early Dec 1980).

There is something odd happening with my installations of any MYPlayCity games. Whenever I try to launch them,, the game Mysteries of Horus is launched instead, without any titles on the buttons.

I've had to uninstall all of the MPC games because of this, and I've no idea where the problem can be? Does anyone have any ideas?

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi John, try deleting the cookies related to the giveaway of the day via your internet browser. Each may have a different way of deleting so you'll probably have to Google how to do it. Also check to see where you are installing the games to and make sure the path is the same as the one i quote in the unfinished review at the top of these comments. Then create a new short cut. If the problem persists, immediately after trying to start the game via the correct shortcut open your event viewer and check the most recent logs to see if there are any related to this issue.

Reply   |   Comment by John B  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

John B,

Thank you for your help. I have done all that you said, but it has made no difference. I even used CCleaner to make sure everything was cleared out as a double check. I'm not using any exotic security software just windows defender and Zone Alarm. I'm using windows 10 and FireFox. I can't seem to find out

The shortcut leads to the right place and it is happening with ALL MPC programs and ONLY MPC, no one else. That is what seems so odd?

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Someone else has reported this problem previously, but I can't remember it getting resolved. Maybe try contacting MyPlayCity directly to ask them. Or try copying the offending game to a pen drive (so that you can copy it back later) and then deleting it from the computer to see if that resolves the issue. Also check through the registry to see if there are any entries related to the game or MPC that are forcing games to point to that game.

Edit:

You could also try deleting all reference to the game and MyPlayCity from your registry; a tedious task, but it may cure the problem. Just in case you're not sure what to do, open the registry editor by typing regedit in the search field. Once the registry editor is open, click on 'Edit' and from the drop down menu select 'Find'. Then use key words to search for the Horus game and MPC. I suggest you back up your registry before making any changes just in case you do delete something accidentally, though I've been editing my registry for many years and have never caused any problems, in fact more often than not whenever I've had to edit the registry, its either been totally successful or hasn't made a difference, but I've never had anything negative happen. When you find your first search item, check the right hand panel to make sure it's specific to the game or MyPlayCity, (i.e. there are no references to other programs. If there isn't you can delete the whole key via the left hand pane, if the reference to the search item includes the names of other programs in the right hand pane just delete the reference to the search item from the right hand side and not the left. When you've deleted the first entry, press F3 to proceed to the next entry. When you get the message ''finished searching through the registry'' repeat the process using other search criteria until your satisfied you've deleted all references to the Horus game and MyPlayCity. Hope this helps.
As an afterthought, and after reading what I'd written, you could also try installing the giveaway games to an external drive or pen drive and see if you are able to play the games from those locations. (assuming you have a pen drive and/or external drive, or maybe even copy the game to a CD/DVD and see if it will play from that location?)

Pinch me hard if I fall asleep! Cuz this game is more boring than dead grass that don't grow no more! Or watching dried paint. Or a couple people I could name but won't because that would be rude.

I suggest extra content such as better or more original mini games, or a level editor that would make it more appealing to me. I think the graphics are a little dated and are in need of re skinning. I've just had enough of the genre and want to see something different or something with more originality.

I use to search for reviews before downloading a game and, sorry to say, this one is maybe the lowest-rated game ever offered by MPC. It is regarded by the most as a "boring match2 cards game, not even a solitaire". Thanks but I'll pass.
