Rainbow Web 2

In Brief

Today's game giveaway is another game from MyPlayCity. A match 3 puzzle released 8 years ago by a family based developer Sugar Games based in Russia.

main menu
how to play
Suggestions:
If you like or don't like today's game please give some feedback about your opinion of the game, for example, what did you like about the game, or how it could be improved from your point of view . If you don't like this genre at all, please explain why. What improvements would change your opinion? There are thousands of subscribers to the game giveaway of the day every weekend which makes this an ideal forum for giving developers ideas as to what their consumers (i.e you) would like to see in a game. For example, you could suggest extra content such as better or more original mini games, or a level editor that you would like to see that would make it more appealing to you. Maybe you think the graphics are a little dated and are in need of re skinning, or maybe you've just had enough of the genre and want to see something different or something with more originality?

If you miss today's game giveaway you can always get the game via MyPlayCity (MPC) 24/7 HERE. The only difference between the main MPC download and today's game giveaway is that some of the 'annoyances' such as check boxes that could result in home page changes to your browser, or even your provider being changed completely are avoided. Installing toolbars is also a favorite tactic from free game sites like MPC, so the removal of the check-boxes frees community members from those risks. What hasn't changed is your browser will still open to MPC's home page whenever you close the game down. The reason for this happening is because MPC have to pay the owners of the games for being allowed to give then away for free. Every time your browser is redirected to MPC's home page MPC earns cash, some of which goes to the developer. There are ways to stop your browser from opening and being redirected to MPC (and other free game sites), but doing so will eventually compromise such sites because the more community members stop their browsers from opening every time they close down a game from sites such as MPC, the less money MPC will earn (because they earn cash from advertisements every time you visit) the less they can pay developers, so fewer games will become available. Eventually as more people know how to stop their browsers from opening, it could compromise the free game sites to such an extent they may disappear, taking away the ability for those who cannot afford to spend money on games from getting them for free. If you know how to stop your browser from opening, please keep the information to yourself. posting it here will result in your comment being deleted. Thank you.

The game downloads to a 30.4 MB zip file that unzips to three files; i.e. a setup.gcd security wrapper, the set up file and a read me document. Those with multiple hard drives are able to save the giveaway's on any drive they wish, though installations default to the C drive if no changes are made. The installed game is 31.9 MB in size. The game installs to the following path by default,:

C:\Program Files (x86)\MyPlayCity.com\Rainbow Web 2

Four shortcuts are installed to the desktop three of which can be safely deleted (Play Online Games, MyPlayCity Games and a free online game which seems to change every time I install for example Imperia Online, Big Farm Online, Fishao Online, Stormfall Online, Klondike Online etc). Also, if you don't like icons installed to the quick launch task bar, make sure you uncheck the box when the additional tasks window appears (after the Select Start Menu Folder window)

If you have a problem installing or activating or getting El Dorado Quest to work please visit the problems section, which I've now incorporated into the FAQ's thread over in sticky section of the Game discusion forums, and which you can find HERE

The Game:

The core game-play in Rainbow Web II is identical to the first game. Your goal is to align a minimum of three same-colored beads on spider webs to make them disappear. The catch is that you can only link same-colored beads if they’re connected by a vertical or horizontal web string; as levels increase, some of these strings on the Web begin to disappear, making it more difficult to align beads together. To make matters more difficult, new bead colors are introduced over time, such as orange and purple. Black beads cannot be swapped, and can only be removed by reaching the edge or center of the web.

Players must also spell words to finish the level. That is, some of the colored beads have letters on them, so you must align three or more same-colored beads with a letter on one or two of them, which helps the spell words, such as “A crystal chandelier,” “The Pool of Desires” or “The Palace Stairway.”

After a long while, the shape of the board changes from a spider web to a more rectangular grid, which is a refreshing change, and introduces new strategies for the gamers to employ. It’ll change back to the web again after a few levels.

gamescreen4bbb568386fd9-5453
screen_06
What is new in Rainbow Web II, however, are two kinds of mini-games spread throughout the game. One is a sliding tile puzzle, where players can click on two squares in the scene to swap them. If one or both of these are correct, they’re locked into place, so you know you can move onto other pieces. Upon completion of this puzzle you’ll be rewarded with something relevant to the scenery, such as a key that opens a new room or a kitchen pot, magic horn, and so forth. The second mini-game is a kind of hidden-object game, where you must build an object like an ancient vase, by finding scattered pieces of it hidden in the level. Once you find all the pieces, the mini-game is over and you go back to the spider web game.

Because it’s very similar to the first game, Rainbow Web II is a very enjoyable puzzler that offers quite a bit of increasingly challenging gameplay spread across 82 levels and two modes (i.e timed and un-timed). But the fact it’s so similar to the first game, and that the mini-games are kind of lame, this sequel may not be enough to satisfy fans of the original.

Useful Information:
The problems section that used to be posted here with the weekly game reviews is now included in the Game Discussion FAQ's thread; which you can find HERE. It together with some other sections were removed to cut down on the length of the review, which some community members found irritatingly long winded. :)

I've updated the games section that used to be posted with the review. The thread is now called 'Weekly round up of game deals', formerly the games section of the weekly reviews. You can find the new thread (which I've posted in the sticky section of the game discussion forums to make it easier to find if you are perusing the game discussion forums) HERE.

The latest free game over on Origin is still Nox.

You can get it HERE. Please note that you do require the Origin game platform to be able to download and install the game. uPlay were giving away Rayman:Origins last week. not sure if it's still available, but if it is, you'll get it HERE. Apparently, uPlay are now following Origins lead and giving away a game every so often.

I love the Rainbow Web games, especially that I can play in an un-timed mode. One minor niggle - the hints come much too quickly. I know you can turn them off - but if they are on, there should be a longer time for you to think!

Hi,
I've only played one other like this and just got so far before held up for awhile. It provides a different
play to the match 3 etc. It uploaded a little slow and opened easily. Only thing do not like is as with yesterday's giveaway that there is NOT an option to use the regular pointed. I feel an additional play or movement tying up the pointer!! The grapics are decent. The story is similar to others of this vein. The puzzles are easy, which is okay to me! and the letters are easy to medium! If I created such a game, I would allow the player more interaction such as putting a key into the lock etc., which would give them more of an interactive feeling that they are accomplishing something and part of the outcome! Thanks for another good game!
Happy Labor day weekend!

Rainbow Web 2
Another PlayCity game, which always downloads and installs well. A Match 3 game with hidden objects and puzzles in it as you play. Very colorful and nice looking screens, which change fairly smoothly.
But don't know if it is the webs or the the letters that you have to match but this one just didn't catch our interest much. Seemed more tedious to play as we went on. Maybe it's an overload of 'match' games lately, idk or the way the mini games seem kind of silly but this game just didn't catch our interest. YMMV though so if you like match games be sure to check this one out!

I've heard of this game before but never tried it. I'm on my gamer Win 10 laptop. It installed and loaded easily as usual. It tried to begin in Full Screen mode but at the resolution I am running my laptop, or some other reason, the fullscreen mode gives only a corner of the game. I alt-enter'd and sent the game to a window. The graphics look inviting. It does have a relaxed mode so that's great. I played one round (have to get back to work), and I think I love this game.

..............................Moderator Comment.............................

Hi Wagashigrrl.

Thank you for your feedback, the game is 8 years old, which probably explains the resolution issues.

Thank you for the two great games this weekend! However, this one doesn't seem to play well with my NVidia GeForce video card on a Win7 64 bit laptop, as it flickers like crazy when I have it full screen. It's fine when played in a window, but then I have a hard reading the text in between the games, but for now, that seems to be the only way I can play this game. I've tried every setting with my graphics card, and nothing seems to stop the flickering video when I play this at full screen, so am open to any suggestions to try to fix this issue, as the Match 3 games are my favorite, and this one looks like a really fun one to play.

..............................Moderator Comment.............................

Hi Blusie.

It's most likely the screen resolution you have your monitor set to. Some screen resolutions may not be supported; newer monitors have a greater choice of resolution choices, so it could be the screen resolution you have yours set to isn't native to the game, so flickering in Win 7, does not have the actual v9 installed. This game may require it to be installed. Hope this helps. occurs. It may also be that you need to update your drivers, or more likely, becasue you are using a newer operating system that the one that was in use when this game was released, you may need to install Direct X 9.0c, which although supported

Downloaded..installed, would not run on Win 10 and added other links that I didn't want. It is now uninstalled and won't waste my time again.

..............................Moderator Comment.............................

Hi Red

Those links are easily delted and are not recored in the registry. Becasue MPC have to pay the developer for giving the game away, they add such things in the hope the downloader will play more games, becasue every game they play from MPC earns them money, some of which goes to developers and adding new games to their library of games. MPC have well over a thosand games that are available to the community for free. With respect to the game not playing on your computer. it's probably the way you have it set up. most community members have had no problems playing the game. you could check your event logs to see if there was a conflict. Because the game giveaways are protected by a Themida wrapper, it may have been your security software that has blocked installation becasue some anti malware suites see the Themida code as a threat becasue Themida code is also used to hide malicious software. but in this case it's totally safe.

I got Rainbow III from this site some time ago. I was ecstatic to see II offered today. I played Rainbow III a little at a time daily because I liked it so much.

Rainbow II has bright, inviting graphics and a twist on match 3 games. I like the hints, but wish there was a little more time before the hint is displayed. That's the only improvement I'd make to the game. Rainbow II will keep me busy for a while. I'll play it the way I played Rainbow III.....a little at a time and drag it out just for the sheer enjoyment of the game.

Thanks GGOTD and MyPlayCity for the gift today. Stephen, I enjoyed the review. Rainbow II isn't that much different than Rainbow III.....thank goodness. Maybe they'll be others in the future.

I like this game! Thanks to Big Fish Games/MyPlayCity/GGOTD/whomever else is responsible for this giveaway! LOL
Works fine on XP SP3.
Have they given away the first one? Did I miss it? Hopefully they'll give away the first one soon?

..............................Moderator Comment.............................

Hi Trying2bhelpful.

I don't think the first one has been given away yet; however, you can download it from most of the free games sites, just make sure you watch out for the check boxes that are present on the installation window during installation, (see my reply to Swampy for an example of what you'll probably see - I posted an image of the install window from today's game) . Once past the installation process the game is basically the same as any giveaway that we've had from MyPlayCity (MPC), i.e. when you close the game down, it will open your browser to MPC's home page, which as I've explained elsewhere, is a necessary evil, because each visit the community makes to MPC's home page earns MPC cash, some of which is used to pay the developers of the games being given away. It's a good system as the browser opening is totally innocuous, and with the click of a mouse button can be closed with no effects to your computer and just a few seconds of your time. MPC have well over a thousand arcade games available for download totally free. You can get the first Rainbow web from My Play City HERE.

Hi White Rabbit and thanks GGOTD and MyPlayCity for this wonderful game. I have #2 and #3 version and have returned to play many times. There is nothing negative to report on this game in my opinion and the only request would be for Sugar Games to make version #4 as quickly as possible.
My dear hubby who always scoffed at my love of computer games can sit for hours playing Rainbow Web.
Thanks again

I already own Rainbow Web I & III from BigFish and did not realize I do not have II until this morning's GGOTD email. Ta Da! Series complete. I do have to be more picky about games I play now that my eyesight is getting worse, but this series has bright and decent size objects and instructions so it will be a keeper as long as I can see it.

I have all 3 and play it religiously. Because I am so familiar with this series, I'll probably repeat what WR already said.

I found the first version of this game basic and not unlike the first version of many Match 3 games. The second though, well, this is definitely an advanced (for the time it was made) version with 1 extra the first did not have, you're uncovering a hidden message and you need to keep playing to uncover; not unique but it's effective. Like the first game, you find the letters and form phrases that unlocks the scene to break the spell but that's where the similarity ends. The second version has you rebuilding whole rooms and floors and to finish the room or floor of a mansion which has 3 floors and a tower where the spider villain took up shop, you find and decipher a code throughout the game located on relics you must find the pieces of and reconstruct after you finish the room/floor. It's just engaging enough to keep you interested. The web as in the first game loses "strands" so that you have to be strategic with your matching to capture and release the letters. As you progress there are little problems that keep you on your toes (like frozen beads) so you cannot merely mindlessly play especially if you decide to turn on the timed version.

What I love isn't just the play and story (the 3rd game is actually better on the story line), I love the fact you can turn off or on the hints, timer, music and sounds for the game.

As a graphics artist, I appreciate the web designs which become quite challenging as you move through the game. It's definitely a keeper.

Good Day to all.

Thank you Buster for making us aware that there is a relaxed option for this game. I didn't notice it in the Options menu. If I missed someone else's mention I also thank you. That is definitely a deal breaker for me and if I don't see it mentioned, most of the time, I will be inclined to let it pass. I envy you guys with the good reflexes. I'm sure it makes the game that much more enjoyable.

Regards.

Ok Windows 10 x64 Pro. Usual extra icons to remove, makes desktop one. Good sliders for the conventional music & audio levels. Celtic type tune. I liked the first spider web game in Relaxed mode. Assume the game allows for switching modes. Like to try next level in Timed. Have to see how the extra mini games plays out. Guess 8.5/10 for fans. Thanks for game , review & comments.

Oh, excellent, excellent! I loved the previous version of Rainbow Web (in spite of being terrified of the real-life web-makers!) and that's one game that I actually managed to play all the way through. (At my age, most games run out of possibilities long before the end.)

Yes, it's Match-3. But it's very different from the usual Match-3. It needs a bit of thought, and a bit of time to consider which way to go throughout each level. It allows that thinking time if you choose the Untimed mode - but the Timed mode is there for those with younger eyes and fingers.

It's bright and colourful, easy to see, it has word games in amongst the matchings, the graphics are attractive (it isn't full of big hairy spiders, honest - or I wouldn't have been seen for dust!) and I would thoroughly recommend it, for adults, for youngsters, for almost anybody really.

Lots of little extra tweaks amongst the pages, and great fun to explore. I love this series! Thank you very much to all concerned - especially the ever-patient Whiterabbit. There's certainly plenty to feed your head in this game.

By the way - I don't use the Steamy games, but I have learned to download the Facebook-connected ones without trouble. All you have to do is click the FB link then, when the window comes up - click CANCEL. That window will go, and the Download link changes colour - at which point you can simply click it as you always could in the past. It only takes an extra couple of seconds.

Nothing much stays the same for long these days. I do miss the old-style giveaway page, but this new one does come up with goodies, if you keep looking.

;-D

Available free at Gametop 24/7 with no wrapper - no check boxes to avoid - no turning off your anti virus protection - no deleting added game links....Download is 23M as apposed to 30.4M. Tells you how much "stuff" is added on. That being said, I've never been disappointed by a Bigfish game.

..............................Moderator Comment.............................

Hi Sid.

This is actually developed by a small family developer from Russia called Sugar Games. They allow it to be distributed via several different game distributors such as Big fish games as well as most of the free game sites, where they earn cash every time it's downloaded and played by anybody.

Downloaded and installed great on Win 8.1 and plays fine. I am delighted to have another Rainbow Web as I really enjoyed the first one, since it goes beyond Match 3, and the addition of extra puzzles (so far got one, I just started) is a nice addition. Like this better than the Match 3 from yesterday, and really don't mind a few of these in a row as long as you throw me an adventure/puzzle type game every few weeks :).

Downloaded and installed with no issues. (Windows 7/64) I enjoyed the first one, so was glad to see this one offered. My only complaint is that it's SO similar to the other that it feels more like replaying than a new game. But it's a good game for me as I like games that are relaxing, and I appreciate the untimed mode option. The minigames are more diversion than challenge so far. I've played 4 of them and there's been little thought required to solve them.

Overall, thumbs up. Thanks GGOTD, MPC, and Whiterabbit.

I'll just download this straight from the myplaycity.com. Don't need the hassle of a go-between for the go-between for the actual company this morning.

..............................Moderator Comment.............................

Hi Swampy,

Even though the game is basically the same, it's just the same trouble as downloading it from this site. If you are already here at least you avoid the check-boxes when you first start the installation process (see image below); otherwise everything is exactly the same. Some community members may miss unchecking those boxes which inevitably leads to home page changes, browser choice changes etc and sometimes tool bars (though not for today's game).

mpc installpost image online
Still, it's your prerogative where you decide to download you game from. Choosing the game giveaway site doe show support for the site and MPC still get their pound of flesh whenever you play the game, the only thing as already mentioned that is different is that there's less risk of getting other changes made to your computer :)

Swamp Thing, Doesn't the installer from MyPlayCity include toolbars (and possibly other stuff as well)? At least this version doesn't seem to have toolbars...

..............................Moderator Comment.............................

Hi Trying2bhelpful,

Thank you for your feedback. Yes the MPC version does have those, which is why I personally think it's better to download the giveaway version than directly from MPC. Not only does it reduce the chance of those changes being made (usually due to rushing the installation, or being distracted), it still benefits MPC, the developer of the game, as well as giving some kudos to the game giveaway team, and it keeps me busy as well; so....... it's basically a win-win-win situation for all. :)

I am perfectly capable of unchecking three boxes. I'd much rather do that then deal with the HUGE HUGE HUGE Themedia wrapper here that I have NEVER liked from way way back in the beginning.

..........................Moderator comment.............................

Okay swampy, each to their own, I just thought it would be nice to support the game giveaway site as they have given away well over a thousand games over the last nine years. The games are basically the same and MPC will still earn their pound of flesh everytime the game is closed down, unless you delete those files, which i personally don't recommend as they are their so that MPC can pay the developers cash. If everyone starts to disable the browser opening, it will lead to such sites closing down as they will no longer be able to pay the developers for their games.

The above comes over as a lecture, it wasn't meant to. :)

The 'Rainbow Web' games are among my favorites. Very relaxing way to spend some time without getting ulcers. Lovely artwork, smooth gameplay, just enough of a challenge for me. My idea of a near-perfect game. Thanks so much, GAOTD and MyPlayCity!

Just adding to my comments --- the other Rainbow Web games have an 'instant kill' type option if you are totally stuck on one of the puzzles. That is missing in this version, and I miss it.

A fun and addictive Match 3 game (oh, I'll just play ONE more board..uh-huh!). Lots of little mini-games interspersed to add variety. Oh, and how frustrating to set yourself up for a subsequent match, only to see your great plans fall through as a match you intended to use "next" gets wiped out by an unexpected match cascading from your last play. I also really like the fact that they've preset each level with "expert times" and also both 'best time" and "best score" by some of the preset users - gives you some objective benchmarks to assess your gameplay against. Only thing I'd like to see changed is the interval before the game offers a hint. You can turn hints off entirely, but what I'd really like is to have it wait longer before offering me one - easy enough to ignore the hint (for a bit at least), but it is distracting & I find I wind up spending less of my own time searching than I would have had the hint not been so readily offered. Thanks to GGAOTD and MyPlayCity for a fun game....and I'm really happy to see we've had such a nice string of games that we've been able to get without having to jump through hoops....that's been a real delight! :-)

That is a pleasant surprise! I liked the first one a lot. Mostly a 3 match game can not hold my attention to the end, this one does.
An improvement I think of, is to put more webs through the game like those in the cave of Rainbow Web 1. I liked the web shaped 3match games, but after a while they are more of the same.
Perhaps an expert level in Rainbow 3?

Anyway, nice game, thanks GGOTD

Downloaded quickly and easily on my new Win10 machine. I've enjoyed both of the previous Rainbow Web giveaways so am fairly sure this will be a keeper but I won't have time to play it until later.

Thanks GGOTD.

Quick & easy download, installs without any problems, and plays well on windows 8.1. I already had the original and 3rd version, happy to see the 2nd one offered here today. Has option for timed or untimed play, I find it great relaxation without a lot of concentration. Thanks very much to My Play City and GGOTD.
