For people complaining that the game is not Vista compatibile, you do realize that the game was released in 2005?!

I'm thinking the company isn't interested in developing an older game for today's OS when it can work on newer games.

For a Flash based game, this one is complicated enough, but the resolution program really really needs to get fixed. I am indeed NOT the only one to run into the darn problem.

Basically, after certain amount of time into the game, the resolution suddenly switches to 320x200, i.e. I only see upper left corner of the entire game screen. Which means the action bar is gone, and end-turn bar is gone. I have to ctrl-tab or alt-tab, then I get back the bar temporarily, but in a few seconds it'll pop back. I've tried compatibility mode, 256-color only, etc. did NOT help.

I've finished the "beach landing" mission, which is interesting, albeit a bit TOO LONG. That's dramatic increase in difficulty from the tutorial mission, and that means tutorial sucks. I don't even want to see what the NEXT mission is going to look like.

And why can't we throw grenades UP a level? Huh? And only 1 or 2 grenades per soldier, some with none? Hah!

I made it through once. 2nd time I played it the game freeze and wont let me go to the 4th level.
From my research there is no support for this game. I can't find this game at http://www.merscom.com/.

I'm glad I didn't pay for this game. $20 is steep for a game of this quality.

I can't get past level three either. Objective four is to get all my men to the landing craft. But after I do that, nothing happens. In other words, there's no way to beat this game.

I wish there some hints or a F.A.Q..... Maybe some cheats.
I am stuck on level three.
By the way, this is rather fun game to play when nothing on television interesting to watch.

#65- you can use a download accelerator with the mirror link sites. BUT w.r.t. this game, I downloaded 50 of 60 Mb (over 4 hours) and then couldn't finish the download, kept getting errors. I suspect it was the site rather than my software or ISP, but can't be sure.

I love strategy games and want to try this game but can't. The game starts, I go through the menu, briefing and click on Play. The Loading screen comes up and remains there for a long time. After about a couple of minutes, the game just quits suddenly. And no, I don't have Vista.

When I look through the game directory, I see that the whole game is nothing but a bunch of Flash files with a game loader. That's a very cheap way (financially and technologically) to develop a fully commercial game. Flash games are fine for web games or parlor games, but it's really lame.

For those complaining that it's not compatible with Vista, the game was released in 2005, so no, my guess they are not going to bother porting it to Vista. The game isn't even listed anymore on the publisher's site.

After almost 4 hours of downloading "...connection to the host was reset" I can't comment on the game if I can't get it. For the larger files we need a download accelerator. Wikifortio doesn't allow accelerators.

Ravenhill (#51),

Whether you like Vista or not, it is the current Windows OS, not XP. Game writers that want to sell games do not ignore the current OS; therefore, one might conclude that Merscom is only delivering outdated games. So what? Well, I am not going to look to their website for games because I believe that they only recycle old games. Some lead, some follow and some are left behind.

Of curiosity, have you really tried the Vista OS since it was released? I have not found it to be "plagued with problems" and I use it about 12 to 14 hours a day, and also play many games on it. The only valid complaint with Vista is that it uses a huge amount of memory (both HDD and RAM) which makes it unsuitable for some of the older systems. For the same reason, it can make using even new low end equipment unsuitable for some of the CPU greedy 3D games.

I have to agree with Chipicha in Comment 49. I found myself in need of leaving the game and I couldn't save. I too have to give it a thumbs down due to no save function. Also, there is no excuse to NOT have keyboard shortcuts in games now. For me it is almost (but not always) a requirement. If this game had the ability to save, then I could forgive no keyboard shortcuts.

Don't like wargames but thought I give this a fair try.
and that was because of the beautiful screenprints.
It was a bit boring and I had to read long chapters in English (not my native language) before I could even start playing
Then my computer crashed on it and that was the moment to remove it from my computer.
But thanks I could try this out GOTD
Tomorrow better I hope...

#44, Vista is not yet the standard OS that most people use yet, so you're gonna have to EXPECT games to not run on Vista. A real gamer would use Windows XP, not Vista. I think it's actually a GOOD thing that these games aren't being released on Vista, as the operating system is plagued with problems and will not be functional until it has has quite a few revisions done on it. Microsoft may be trying to make Vista the standard, but it's not going to happen until the OS starts actually working properly. XP is the way to go.

P.S. Why didn't my original review of this game get published????

I give it a thumbs up.

2. Turn-based. Yuck!
3. I'd rather spend some $50 on Age of Empires 3 than $20 for this crap.

I like this game quite a bit, but after an hour of playing it I rather doubt I will every play it again. It is missing two essential components that are vital to games like this; keyboard shortcuts and a save function.

Since I am on a laptop, I really appreciate it when I can play with the keyboard. Therefore, having to click "Actions" and then click "Move" over and over again became tedious quite quickly. Would it be that hard to make it so you can just press "M" to activate the move function?

But even that I can forgive in a game like this, but what I can't forgive is the lack of a save capability. The missions can take an hour or more (or maybe I just suck at the game... whatever) and for those of us with shorter attention spans or are too busy to devote that much time to a computer game, it is frustrating to just quit the mission halfway through and then have to start over from the beginning the next time you play.

I want to give this game a thumbs up, I really do, but the fact that those two things are missing from the game just make it unplayable for me.

I'll give it a 5/10 for nice graphics and playing style, but no keyboard shortcuts or save function.

Impossible to see if this is working yet - apparently has to have some port free to phone home. Will try on a different router later.

Looks like it's a flash game with 6 "missions" only. That's not really mentioned in the reviews either.

No thumbs yet - have to see it in action first!

Was not happy at first to see yet another Merscom that is not Vista software. Still, I made the download and, after much finesse, got the game running. I had to set the compatibility mode to Windows 2000, disable desktop composition and run as system administrator.

There is no fast way to play this game. I would rather be given a front-end fact sheet then having to deal with the endless supply of pop up instructions during game play.

The military history lesson provides a little side interest, but honestly, there is not much real history covered in the few levels that I played through.

I will keep the game for a long and rainy day but this is not one that will see much time in my game play.

I was excited to see this. I love TBS games and free ones are the best. Though I found some thing very interesting after downloading and installing it. I am not usually one to read the directions, but for some reason I went ahead and let the read me page come up. Very clearly it says in the read me file:

"YOUR VERSION OF OPERATION VICTORY IS OUTDATED.

Please go to www.history.ca/operationvictory/ to download the lasted version of the game."

Well, bad news; I tried several time in several ways to get there and it just doesn't exist. All you get is to look at the history television schedule (and other things relating to history television). I am not sure if the problems that others are having are because the game is outdated or not, but it just may be. If anyone figures out what I am doing wrong in trying to get to the update of it.. let me know. Yet, for now it is sleepy time..so I will have to give it a try tomorrow and look further for the update them.

Wow! A WWII game focusing on someone other than American soldiers for a change! That alone is a breath of fresh air. As a Canadian, I give it a hearty "thumbs-up" for that reason alone! Also, good historical content.

It lacks some polish. I've seen turn-based squad games like this one done better, but they also cost a lot more. Would have been nice to see an option for a higher screen resolution and windowed play. Also, why not assign "Move" as a default action instead of making the player select it every single turn? Aside from these minor quibbles, great game!

A good game for free! BUT every time that I've tried to use it after the first time, the opening screens only show about a quarter of what they should so all I can do is cntrl/alt/del and end task. Pity! And I wander why it happens and if I can correct it.

thank you for this game ggaod, its unlike most of your offerings and is an interesting change of pace.

Its not my cup-of-tea, but i gave it a go, heres a screen shot of the game in action, rather than just screenshots of the basic graphics
http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/Nevik/opvictoryinaction.JPG

its turnbased, as many have said, so often it can leave you sitting around watching characters you dont control move around, and the game can be pretty slow, even so, it manages to present a good story, and some of the history of the war itself. a nice touch is the background and bio of each of your squad members before you start your round.

essentially though it is pick a charcter, use action points to move them to a place or usuable item...rinse and repeat, if you like turn based strategy then its an excellent game, if you dont avoid this.

if you have never played turnbased strategy think of it as a cross between rpg and a board game.

Tried and true concept, and seems to be nicely scripted missions based on the beach landing, but the user interface is sorely lacking. It gets a reluctant thumb up as it might be worth 20$ for those who are able to get past this annoyance, but you'll likely be better off with Jagged Alliance 2 (brilliant) or the fairly new X-COM lookalike "UFO: Extraterrestrials" (that also needs some help on its UI). ET is the same price, and JA2 probably too by now, in a bargain bin somewhere.

THe game installed beautifully, and activated fine.
I was truly excited as the opening screens passed by.

I thought..... WOW, a great war game....

Then, the game started.
It is a complete excercise in boredom.
The turn-based format, and the constant " click here, click this then do this, then click "'end turn' " format is simply a chore.
Games should not be a chore to play.
Thank you GOTD for the freebie, but I will be uninstalling this
"excersize your mouse" program

I don't understand why this was done as a turn based game.
you can't even use the arrow keys for movement.

I rate this game a 0 on a scale of 10
only because on a scale of 10, I cannot
use a negative integer to rate it.

Could it be?
Could it truly be that for once there is a game that was actually programmed, instead of slapped together by a some teenage twerp.

It looks promising and there is even some actual reviews to be found about it. Definately something to check out further.

*faint* it even has a review on a actual game site

In short, no matter if there are shortcommings it's the most professional made game that has been on here in the last 6 months, if not ever.
