I finally installed this and gave it a try late last night. Yes, the graphics are pretty basic, I've got an old Activision "Shanghai" game from 20 years ago that actually has better graphics than this. But it installed well, and played fine (and the tile set is really easy to see, sometimes a problem with some of the higher end mahjongg games), and most importantly, it loaded quickly! Not everyone has a high end computer system, and this should play well on even lower end slower machines. I'll be keeping it a while, it'll be good to have around if I'm in the mood for a quick game of mahjongg and don't want to waste time loading one of the bigger games off a CD.

ENGLISH: Smelled, Spelled

AMERICAN: Smelt, Spelt

Sorry, but Spelt is not the same as Spelled. The reason the incorrect spellings of common words are becoming acceptable is because the language American is growing and devouring what used to be known as English. People don't spell night (nite) or cheque (check) properly in the United States...the list goes on and on.

But really, what does this have to do with GGOTD? :)

comment #19 you idiot, in the usa, capital IS spelt capitol, so before you loose unwanted dribble maybe you should check your facts
apart from that mahjong isn't my style of game but i can be sure it will be downloaded by a lot of people, thanks GOTD

#19, while you are correct in that capital is indeed spelled capital, and that would be the appropriate word in that sentence, capitol is STILL spelled capitol, and is also a word, so he didn't spell it wrong, just used the wrong word :-)

shame the one good game offered wouldn't work for a lot of us with the missing .dll despite all attempt to fix the problem :(
I have enough mahjong games; in fact play with real set so not for me but any mahjong game is good; different themes appeal to different people.

Doublegames is showing great improvement with this updated version of its Mahjongg game given away here earlier. They are obviously listening to our comments (even the whining) and using them to make better games. This game installed perfectly for me, and sneaked in no unexpected links etc.. It has understandable rules and several options. I misunderstood that I was supposed to click on one of the graphics to select which kind of game I wanted to play, but it wasn't a big deal. Maybe it would have been better to put the graphics on a button for dummies like me! I especially liked the fact that I could dismiss the background graphic to make seeing the tiles easier. I thought the tiles could have been touched up to look better, but the game was nicely playable anyway.

Thank you Doublegames for your efforts to increase the quality of your creations, and thank you GAOTD for your efforts to continue to deliver good games and programs for such a grouchy bunch of ingrates as many of us seem to be.

erratum to my post, #33:

In my comment I referred to McAfee SiteAdvisor without clearly defining what website they tested. The site that was evaluated was www.doublegames.com.

Also, for those who like free downloads, the SiteAdvisor is a free plugin available for download at,

"Spelt" is not just a grain, but it is also an acceptable alternative spelling for "spelled." Please, Heln, make http://www.dictionary.com your bitch before you criticise others' spelling. And Kevin, you look like an ass when you call others stupid over a very common spelling error which spell-check utilities won't catch, because the words themselves are spelled properly, just not for the context they're being used in.

As for today's Mah Jongg, it's free. It's not $30 or whatever DD's rate is, if you get it from here, you get it FOR FREE.

#33, a few followup questions:

1/what pornographic images?

3/GGotD doesn't set the prices.

4/use a temporary email address, you'll never get a single email, easy solution there.

To clarify one point, GGotD/the developer wants to hear criticism of the game itself and any issues and problems not these general "oh no not so-and-so company", "I hate this type of game", etc.
Those types of comments are less than useless and are completely irrelevant and will be ignored (and for good reason) they are not constructive criticism, they are merely whining and griping for no good purpose.
Not that you yourself did this, I am commenting on the one statement you made on people expressing opinions.

Despite the fact that this came from DoubleGames (which I have personally dogged), I tried this one and gave it a thumbs up. Although I have a better Mahjong version that I have already paid for, IMHO this is better than the other offerings of theirs that I have previously tried. Graphics are a bit rough in full-screen but gameplay seems to be pretty decent.

The reality of the situation is that all of you people harping up about how we're "rude" to not be having an orgasm over the fact that DOUBLEGAMES has offered us yet another worthless game loaded with mal-ware, are actually being FAR MORE RUDE than us. We don't tell you what you can and can't say, so STOP TRYING TO TELL US. So. Created a crappy mahjong game, gave it a totally unrelated name (Taipei's the capital of Taiwan, for those that don't know), and wrote a stupid description for it.
On a scale of 1-10 I'd give it a negative 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

Gotta admit, DoubleGames Mahjong Elite is one of my favorite games downloaded from ggotd (Crystal Cave Gold is a clear #1 for me).

Instead of a typical Mahjong game, it's kind of an action game as you race against time to complete the board. Quick recognition and reflexes in matching pieces are critical to being successful (kind of like an e-version of 'whack-a-mole'). Very simple game where the challenge, fun, and satisfaction comes from the steep improvement in your scores as you play it for awhile. The person above who said it can become addictive hit it head-on.

My high scores are 320,622 for the 'step-by-step' game (classic level) and 360,518 for the 'any level' game (medium difficulty played like 'step-by-step', i.e. I didn't cherry pick the easier boards multiple times).

Hint for those who were frustrated with not having enough time to complete a board: try the 'hard' or 'classic' settings instead of 'easy'. Although you get less 'containers' for tiles, each level increase in difficulty comes with an extra minute of time, a trade off that makes the 'more-difficult' levels actually easier.

I'm assuming all this translates to todays game since everyone says it's almost identical. I'll download & repost if I notice any differences.

OH NO!! "They who shall not be named" have returned!!!

Sorry - just saw the Harry Potter movie.

#33 - thanks for your comments, as I agree whole heartedly. The "I don't see why people complain about free stuff" argument is old and annoying. The fact there is a comment box leaves the door open for people to say what they wish. The fact it is a comment box lends itself to the obvious fact that you are to COMMENT on the software. It isn't simply a "thank you GGOTD" box. Not that those things shouldn't be said, as they should, but people are supposed to make comments - even constructive critical ones - about software. Yes, even FREE software.

That being said - in all fairness, I wouldn't download today simply because I'm not interested. Reality included - even if I was interested I wouldn't download because it is DoubleGames.

Ok Mahjong is a good game but i have tons, plus i can play it on Pogo.com. If it hadnt been doublegames i MIGHT have downloaded it.
#33 - You are right, after constant complaints from us they did fix a few issues, so no one should stop complaining if they think something needs to be fixed.
I know most of us are happy and appreciative to get free games, we just get tired of doublegames and sites like them trying to feed us this low quality, over-priced garbage that they probably cant sell so they pawn it off on us hoping we will go to their site and buy 1 of their better games...i use that term loosely.
Anyways, i will check in again tomorrow. Thanks GAOTD.

Ress (#19),

Thank you for correcting my spelling. Your gracious and tactful note is warmly accepted. I am sorry that my mistake disturbed you so greatly. And no, I am not stupid, only mistaken on the definition of capitol vs. capital.

To all, the only way that GGAOTD knows how you feel about the offers on this site is to express your opinion. Perhaps if the DoubleGames publisher hears the complaints often enough they will improve their business.

Known issues:
1. Pornographic images in games--(resolved after numerous complaints)
2. Excessive nags, icons and unnecessary files--(resolved after numerous complaints)
3. Low quality games at inflated prices--(no change)
4. This is what McAfee SiteAdvisor says, "After entering our e-mail address on this site, we received 4.8 e-mails per week. They were very spammy. We received 2 e-mails which contained a virus."--(tested April 2007)

So Ress, there you have it. Sometimes what seems to be "FREE" actually has a hidden price. I think warning others is a capital idea.

Hey, Fred,

If you really think you're getting something worth $15 for free, and want to whine about Belgian Dude's criticism of low-quality Doublegames crap, who am I to question your intelligence?

On the other hand, you found this site. Maybe you can find another one:

http://www.dirfile.com/freeware/mahjongg.htm

All the Maj Jongg games there are free, and they blow the doors off this latest example of Doublegames feces-ware. Or try some other freeware sites for dozens more examples.

Installed and played this game on my XP machine. NO PROBLEMS!

I was just glad to see that, unlike the previous Mahjong game offered by the GAOTD (which I removed because of the time limit), this version does not have a time limit.

Game played well and I was NOT distracted by the graphics quality. (High quality graphics are overrated and can be CPU and graphics card limiting.) My kids have no complaint after playing this game either.

Thank You to DoubleGames and GAOTD.

I have seen other Double Games which I have not liked, however, I have been waiting for a repeat(kinda, sorta) of the Elite Mahjong game as this is very addictive. The last time this came around, I only loaded it on one computer. Nows my chance to complete the rest of the computers. The music is different as compared to Elite Mahjong, as is the tile set, but the layouts are similar if not identical and play is good. Thanks again GAOTD.

#19 Ress, The word is not spelt. Spelt is a grain. The word you want is "Spelled". If you want to correct someones spelling I suggest you make sure your spelling is correct. Look it up or use spell check. Mahjong games are classic. If some one is new to this site it may be the first one they are exposed to. Not all Double games are lame. Try it before you judge it. The other games featured here, Great Art, and Venice are both good games. Try the free 60 minute trial.

Interesting to see that the game is named after the capitol of Taiwan rather than the capitol of mainland China.

I occasionally play mahjong and almost went to the "download now", but as soon as I saw the DoubleGames moniker I stopped cold. Sadly, I am now conditioned to check who is the publisher before continuing to the download.

Please, GGAOTD, lose this company forever.

This IS kind of a bad selection today, because it looks bad compared to most normally free majong games. I've played several different free majong games myself, and seriously this is the second worst looking majong game I can remember seeing.

The pictures on the tiles themselves aren't as crisp or easy to distinguish compared most other majong games I've played, and that's pretty important in a majong game, more than anything else to do with the graphics. To anyone whose never played majong, I suggest searching the net for a better looking free version.

Don't you people understand one small thing you are too stupid to note: Mahjong games MUST BE POPULAR as there are lots of them and they score highly on online game sites etc.
so stop talking rubbish just because you seem to expect to come along here and download the next rockstar games stuff.
Obviously some people DO like these kind of games so if you don't just skip it. Stop insulting the people who run the site because you are too selfish and self interested to consider anyone else you spoilt brats.
My review of the game is not unlike others: I do not play these mahjong games as they bore me. No complaints though. Great site.
Thanks.
