Giveaway of the Day, '
Can I still get a key for this game. I didn't know there were gonna be more keys. Are there still any left? If so, how do I get mine?

Thank you

...........................Moderator Comment................................
Hi Fay, sorry for the delay in replying. I'm not sure whether the team will be getting any more games. however, I reckon it would be worth contacting the developer directly and asking for one. Just tell him you tried to get a key via the game giveaway site a couple of times, but each time they had no keys left. The guy seems a generous type as his game has been given away elsewhere previously. He did give away over 22 thousand keys over the giveaway period despite the hiccups. I too didn't get a key, but I'd already purchased it. i was applying for one to give to another community member who was having problems applying for a key via the site. I applied twice and both times all of the keys had gone.
You can contact the developer Lightning Man Media via their web site HERE. Developers can actually be really generous. Just tell them the following: You really liked the look of the game via videos you saw and the reviews you read, but cannot afford to buy the game due to circumstance. You were hoping to get a key via the game giveaway site, but they ran out of keys twice, and you were unlucky to visit after they had ran out both times. You could even say you got up specially in the middle of the night after the first lot was given away specifically to check to see if new keys had been added, which they had, but by the time you logged on all those had gone as well. I know it sounds whiny, but it does show that you really wanted the game. Perhaps they will give you a key for free.

Hi. I sent the developer for this game an email but it got kicked back. How do I contact them now? Do you have an email for them?

Thank you
Fay

Givaway of the Day,
1) Have you already added them and I missed out or
2) Does my attempt to register mean that as soon as more keys are issued I will get one. or
3) Do I have to keep coming back and trying to see if one is newly available.

It would help if you were more specific in your announcement.
I do however appreciate your willingness to get more keys and let us know.

Giveaway of the Day, this was a really frustrating waste of my time. You made me jump through hoops and give away my email address - for a $2 game - only to be told that there are no more keys. It's too close to the deadline now to expect any help. Why didn't you have enough keys to last for the duration? It's pathetic. This is the last time I'll bother to visit the game section of your site.

So where are these keys? We are heading into tomorrow's game give away..

Well, any news update regarding new keys being added?

...........................Moderator Comment................................
I can't say Tom, the game giveaway team did acquire a second batch about 8 hours ago, but there has been much more interest in yesterdays game compared to previous Steam games. The team only request the number of keys based on previous giveaways. I have nothing to do with that side of the project.
All I can suggest is check back occasionally throughout today's game giveaway just in case the team do manage to get more keys. Over 22 thousand keys were given away yesterday and early this morning.

Reply   |   Comment by Tom  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Givaway of the Day, Looks like more keys were NOT added and the time was NOT extended. Double FAIL! Get MORE keys than you could possibly need in the first place and return the unused ones afterwards... it's not rocket science!

...........................Moderator Comment................................
I've removed the double posting. Codes have to be generated. the developer doesn't want thousands of returned codes hanging around, which is why the giveaway team base they initial requests for keys on the average number of community members downloading games from this site. They did not expect such a massive response to this game; (compared to previous games from Steam). As I mention elsewhere, over 22 thousand community members got a free key. Maybe the developer didn't want to give any more keys away. I have no control over that side of the giveaway project as I'm just a volunteer community member who tries to support the generosity of these people by giving a little of my time via administering the forums and these comments as well as posting reviews of the games given away.

TK, don't fret whiterabbit-uk I was addressing (replying to) Giveaway of The Day poster not you, so you should not need to re-justify anything for them or even edit my comment! After all you are as you say "just a volunteer comunity member" with no control over Giveaway team policies... A simply mathematical point of fact if you always target the average of an unpopular run then you will never have enough for a popular title, and you run an almost 50:50 chance of running out of keys when ever using the steam platform giveaway method.which does not seem a good way to maintain decent customer relations for a business!

Suggestions:
Please give some feedback about your opinion of Nyctophobia, for example, what did you like and/or dislike about the game, give some suggestions on how you think the game could be improved. If you don't like this genre at all, please explain why. What improvements to the game would positively change your opinion of this game?
There are thousands of subscribers to the game giveaway of the day every weekend which makes this an ideal forum for giving developers lots of ideas as to what their consumers (i.e you) would like to see in a game. For example, you could suggest extra content such as better or more original mini games, or a level editor that you would like to see that would make it more appealing to you. Maybe you think the graphics are a little dated and are in need of re-skinning or textures need higher definition, or maybe you've just had enough of the genre and want to see something different or something with more originality? What developers don't want to see and is likely to put them off giving any more games away, or for that matter other prospective developers contributing is whinging about anything other than the game. They want to see positive or negative comments related to the game itself and suggestions on how the game could be improved. Posting single word comments, gibberish or comments with just a few non descriptive or inappropriate swear words are not acceptable and will most likely be edited or deleted.

If you miss today's game giveaway you can always get the game via Steam 24/7 HERE for less than the price of a cup of coffee from Starbucks or other popular coffee house i.e. $1.99/£1.59.

Once that has been completed you can input the Steam code that you've received (after completing the form filling) via the game button along the top of the Steam client, (located between friends and Help - see image below). If you have a problem installing or activating or getting Nyctophobia to work please visit the problems section, which I've now incorporated into the FAQ's thread, and which you can find HERE. There are no Steam forum entries about this game yet, but you may find issues mentioned via the Steam reviews HERE (mostly negative reviews)

The Game:

The majority of reviews on Steam are very negative (see below for further discussion), but the odd one does give the developer credit for creating a cheap short horror story that costs less than $2/£1.60

Nyctophobia offers a short story and after you beat it you unlock the "own the night" mode, which adds a little more content to the game. If you are into achievement hunting, the three achievements that are available are relatively easy to gain and require you to play through maybe a couple of times to gin all three.

The controls are simple (see image for details), though they can feel unpolished at times, as does the soundtrack. I would suggest you play this game in total darkness and with a set of headphones turned up as loud as is comfortable to appreciate the sound effects and to give the game more atmosphere. Personally I think the game was well worth the £1.69/$1.99 I paid for it. (It was even cheaper when it was on sale. If you're looking for a vaguely creepy, atmospheric experience, offering around a minimum of an hour of content, this is a game for you. If you complete it in less than the time mentioned, you're probably missing something.

The game was updated back in July with some new textures, improved terrain, new points of interest as well as several major bug fixes that were the cause of many of the bad reviews. Additional content was also added, which is unlocked after you play the game through for the first time.

Other Reviews and Videos:

You can see Steam community members reviews of the game HERE and some videos of game play HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE

Conclusion:
A short, but in my opinion interesting short horror story played in first person perspective. This is a very cheap game, so don't expect a long game with amazing graphics. Play it late at night with all the lights turned out and you may get a decent gaming experience. Most of the reviews via Steam really slate this game, but I think most of them are unjustified considering how low budget it is; also, many of those reviews were posted before the game had a major update that included extra content and bug fixes. It delivered what it said it would i.e a large interactive map, randomly spawned battery packs, cut scenes and a journal feature. Though I would disagree with the challenging Steam achievements. You really just need to play through the game a few times to obtain a full set of those. Oh yeah, also I wouldn't say the graphics are vivid either, but that's not meant to be a negative comment against the game. If you enjoy playing Nyctophobia you will almost certainly love the interactive and beautifully rendered game Slender. )

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Lightning Man Media for giving away an unlimited number of Steam keys to the game giveaway community; and as always to the game giveaway team, for providing the opportunity to get a Steam game for free.

Useful Information not necessarily related to today's Game Giveaway:
The problems section that used to be posted here in the Game review is now included in the Game Discussion FAQ's thread; which you can find HERE.

I've updated the games section that used to be posted with the review. The thread is now called 'Weekly round up of Game Deals', formerly the games section of the weekly reviews. You can find the new thread (which I've posted in the sticky section of the game discussion forums to make it easier to find if you are perusing the game discussion forums) HERE.

If today's games were not to your liking, you may find other games either free or for less than the price of a cup of coffee (from your favorite coffee house) via the 'Weekly Roundup of Game Deals' thread which I've posted a link to above, or HERE.
.
The latest free game over on Origin is still Nox. You can get it HERE. Also for a very short time Origin are giving away the add-ons for the premium FPS game Battlefield 4. This game is a premium FPS game released almost two years ago. If you like FPS games I highly recommend getting the base game from Origin. You don't need to have the game tied to your account to get the add-ons, so even if you don't have the game a tthis time, it is still worth getting the add-ons for a later time. Once tied to your Origin account they are yours permanently. Obviously to play the add-ons you will need to buy the game eventually. Origin have frequent sales and to purchase the basic game can be very cheap when one of these is live, or alternatively you can get it from other outlets such as GreenManGaming that have discounts up to 25% virtually every week. . You'll find the free add-ons on the same page as the free Nox HERE. Please note that you do require the Origin game platform to be able to add the add-ons to your account. Also, the PC version of ALERT: SECTOR 8 (a traditional Shoot Em Up)is also still available over on Failmids Shareware-on-Sale site HERE, also available via Failmid's site are the arcade game Lexica (ends Monday 19th Sept) and the open world racing game The Crew (ends Monday 3rd Oct). You will need the uPlay client for The Crew. To get the game you have to log into your uPlay account, then click on the banner that says Ubisoift turns 30. This should open a new page where you can get The Crew added to your account. The Crew is also a premium AAA game and well worth getting, especially if you like open world racing games. To get The Crew the shareware link I've provided above isn't actually necessary. You just have to sign into your uPlay account and look for the Ubisoft turning 30 link, or if you don't have a uPlay account create an account HERE. Click on the green Join the Club button, get your free account, then get your free copy of The Crew.

If you spend over a dollar in the Indie Gala store (they have some excellent bundle deals, but these are excluded from the offer) you will also get a free copy of the excellent trials bike racer Nail'd

Whiterabbit-uk, Is it possible to give my key to someone else for this game. I am not very good at games that use the keyboard to move around. I mostly use the mouse when I play games like HOG games. I keep getting killed before I get very far in this game. Thank you.

Hi Kathleen, if you've already redeemed the game on Steam, which I presume you have judging by your comment, it is now permanently tied to your account. If you'd purchased it you would have been able to get a refund on the game so long as you applied withing two weeks of getting the game and you'd not played more than 2 hours. however as this was free I don't think that applies. however if you haven't leave a message and I'll email you and you can sent it to me. i'll make sure someone from this community who is deserving gets the key. I already have the game. Purchased it back in June. :)

GOTD Team,

When I click on the "Download Now Nyctophobia" button, it does not open the box to allow me to ask for key by Email. It just repaints this same page [https://game.giveawayoftheday.com/nyctophobia/].
I am using Chrome Browser : Version 49.0.2623.112 m

Please send me link for key!
There are still 14496 keys left as I am writing this!!
Thank you.

Hi Rowena, According to the time stamp on your comments the giveaway had ended, which probably explains why you were not directed to the Steam page. I've given another explanation in your last comment, which judging by the time stamp on this particular comment does explain everything. Can you confirm what time you applied for the giveaway?

Reply   |   Comment by R  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Thanks for nothing GOTD Team....
Never got any response from you regarding the above issue; so never got a key.
Do you even read the comments. People have been having issues with various browsers and the ability to use your "Download Now" button for weeks now, and you have not given any solutions!
The best responses by members of the GGOTD community are to try a different browser, and if that doesn't work then try another, and another, and another.... I guess getting the key is the "GAME" for this giveaway.
Have your web team look into the problem and FIX IT!

......................................Moderator comment...................................................

Hi Rowena, please don't take the following comment negatively, it's meant to explain that there is unlikely to be a problem at the giveaway end. Why you may ask. Because Over 22 thousand community members were successfully given keys for this game. You may have seen several comments about community members not being able to get a key for whatever reason. It's usually always those that are having problems that comment here and those comments made here make up only a very tiny fraction of those who visit and follow through getting a key for the games offered, i.e. usually less than 0.05% to 0.01% of community members who download here actually bother to comment at all. (I've been calculating percentages for years on this site so know I'm correct - I also used to teach maths or math if you are from the US).

In today's case with over 22 000 people getting a key, that percentage falls even lower. So it really is more than likely (though not 100%) a problem at your end or your providers than a problem at the giveaway end. 22 thousand community members getting a positive result from this giveaway prove that (at least statistically).

The team didn't expect such a vast response for this particular game asking only for a much lower number of licenses than were asked for initially, based on previous giveaway numbers. They did have to ask for more from the developer later in the day but unfortunately even that wasn't enough. I personally applied and didn't get one, but that was because at the time all the keys that the team had initially secured from the developer had already been given away. I'd gone to bed by the time the new batch were released and by the time I'd got up, those also had gone. As this is a free games sites my attitude on the matter if I miss out for whatever reason is ''Cest La Vie'' and ''plus de chance la prochaine fois'' though I'd already purchased the game when it was released and was going to give my key to someone who was also having problems.

The giveaway team gave away over 22 thousand keys for this game. Such numbers were not expected and the team had to ask the developer for more keys, which also ran out. The number of keys requested is usually based on previous giveaway numbers. Saturdays game had an unprecedented number of requests, which the developer couldn't cope with It was not the fault of the giveaway team; they try their best to get games for everyone. I'm actually shocked that you use the word scandal. The game was obviously extremely popular. The team have secured millions of copies of well over a thousand games since they started operating ten years ago. Nothing is unlimited. :)

As with all Steam games, the team can only get so many keys at a time. Today's game has been unusually popular and over 22 thousand keys have been given away so far. The team did acquire more keys several hours ago, but those have also been taken.
The number of keys they get is determined by the average number of community members downloading or requesting games from previous giveaways. There is never an unlimited supply when different activation codes are required. I can only advise coming early to such giveaways to avoid disappointment.

It may be worth checking back later as previous situations like this the game giveaway time has been extended, but this is not guaranteed. The team may get more keys, but I'm not involved with that side of this project so can't say for certain whether it will happen.

Today's game has been very popular. Over 22 000 licenses have been given away. The team ask for a specific number based on previous giveaways. When those keys are exhausted they will ask for more. whether the team will ask a third time isn't guaranteed. Check back later just in case.

Well I tried to download it but my anti malware program will not let me do so. Short of turning off my program, I'm unable to tell the program to let the setup file go through.

I wish I could just go through Steam but there it requires me to purchase the game. Not sure how to get past that point so I can download free.

Thus, I guess I'll have to pass on this offering.

...........................Moderator Comment................................
Hi Mewzical, if you've got the key, you should be able to install the game via Steam. There is no direct download of the game from this site as it is a steam game. You have to apply for a free key via the download button. I've explained this in various answers to other community members comments as well as posted images of the various steps. Once you've completed those steps a key should be sent to your email. Which is then inputted into the Steam client. Once accepted the game is tied to your Steam profile and you can install it via the Steam library.

Since the keys have ended for this game, just wanted to ask a question. Would GGOTD ever offer point and click games? Like Syberia , Grimm Fandango and Myst type of point and click games to name a few. I know HOG are somewhat point and click, but I don't mean HOG type of games (I do like them).

I am on Syberia 2 right now and I don't expect Syberia 3 due to cost, I would pay for it myself when it is out in Dec. 2016. To get an early/older game free from a set of point and click games would have me purchasing the other/new episodes of the games. I would be happy if they are on steam because of my account on steam.

It's just an ideal, what do you think?

If you have any problems, please read the comments posted today. I have answered quite a few and your issue may already have been answered. To those that think they are getting a game downloadable directly from the giveaway site, you don't. You have to follow the process which I've outlined in my review and also posted images of some of the steps in answer to comments made by the community. Please check them out. hopefully your problem will be solved.
I will endevour to continue moderating today's game when I get up in the morning, but tomorrows game which isn't a Steam key must take priority until I've completed the review. . It's still in draft form and I have to upload images etc. Hopefully the giveaway team will extend today's game due to the hiccup running out of keys earlier. They have done so in the past, but this is not guaranteed. I'm sure it will be announced if it is to be so. So as not to be disappointed, please check back before the giveaway is over if you don't already have a key.

I've spent far longer than I wished moderating today. i ave some very important legal issues that need to be completed soon. If i don't get them sorted by the beginning of October i could lose tens of thousands of ponds. I've been at t he monitor for almost 6 hours moderating and need to go to bed. Good night.

If it is free, why won't it download. I keep clicking on the download button and it just reopens the same page. It shows there are still 9+ hours to download it for free, but it won't download. Everything I see tells me it would be a fun game to play, but I guess I won't find out unless I go to their site and BUY it. I know, It is only $1.99 but this is supposed to be a free give-away, not a teaser so you will BUY it. Unless someone changed the definition of free.

Please read my review at or near the top of the page. also some of the images I've posted showing what you need to do to get a steam key. there is no direct download from this site. you click on the download button, then fill in the Details, which opens up your browser on the Steam log in page. you log into Steam via that browser page, then it redirects back to the game giveaway pages, where you fill in your name and email where you want the Steam code to be sent. I've also posted how to redeem the Steam code.

I went through the whole process and was told that the Steam key would be emailed to me. It never arrived. At that time this web page said that there were 1050 keys still available.

..............................removed by moderator due to inappropriate word.......................... take it off the page if you gonna play that game.

Hi Michael, unfortunately I've had the same problem for most of the Steam keys I've applied for. It was only when I changed the email I use here to a 'live.com email' that I started to receive them, you don't need to use the same email you use for your Steam account. Whether some domains are ignored, IDK, but there does seem to be a problem as others have had the same issues. Sorry I can't be of assistance. I'm just a volunteer moderator.

Same problem as #16 ... Nyctophobia simply will not start downloading.

...........................Moderator Comment................................
Hi Ron, did you get a key emailed to you? You can't download the game directly from this site. You have to complete the following stages:

1Stage I - Click on the Green Download button
2Stage 2 - when the new window appears click on the Steam button
3Stage 3 - Sign into your Steam account via the browser that opens (I was already signed in so you don't see the log in fields in the image above.
4Stage 4 - Fill in your name, email, tick the Catcha then click on the Get the Key button
Thankfully, more keys have been secured. Once you've clicked on the button you should get a message saying an email has been sent with the Steam code. Please don't take the above as condescending. I don't know exactly what you know regarding Steam, so I've assumed little. I hope the above images are helpful?

well, dang, I just spent about 30 mins clicking and clicking and downloading, and sending email verifications, and creating accounts, and finally there are none left??????
What is the point of the 24 hour clock, if there is a limited number??
You are making it harder and harder to deal with GameGiveawayoftheDay.
I was even willing to try a different type of game, I might have liked it, but we'll never know now.

Hi Julie, the team have secured more keys. They don't want to ask for a lot more than will be requested, so they have to look at past giveaways and make an assessment as to how many keys to ask for. It wasn't expected to be as popular as it has turned out to be.

I really would like to get this game, but I cannot manage it! I downloaded the browser that whiterabbit said to use, opened my steam account, signed into this site via steam, posted to fb, and cannot get the key. No email in any folder. This is why I never used the steam account I set up 2 years ago, because I cannot get the key to any game and cannot find any game that I buy. I admire and trust whiterabbit, but steam just doesn't do it for me.

...........................Moderator Comment................................

Hi Jackie, I didn't bother to apply for a code when today's game went live because I purchased the game when it was originally released on Steam last August 2015, but I decided to go for one when I saw your comment with the intention of giving you the one I'd get; unfortunately, after going through the application process I got the message that the activation codes had ended. According to the listings in the Admin panel this was supposed to be an unlimited giveaway? Maybe the game giveaway team will get more keys for latecomers as this has happened a few times.

There has to be something wrong if you can't find the games you purchase. Are you looking in the right place? I install my Steam games to a different drive than the default location; however, you can check to make sure any games you've purchased (assuming you've downloaded them onto your computer via the Steam library) are installed on your computer. If you've not been able to locate then on the Steam client there is something terrible wrong. Please don't think I'm being condescending by posting the following images, I don't know how much you know about Steam, so I'm assuming you only know a little. The first image below shows where the Steam library is:
5settings
I seem to remember the Steam client is defaulted to open on the Store page, but you can change that by opening up settings. You'll find this by right clicking on the Steam word at the top left hand corner of the Steam client. This brings a drop down menu, near to the bottom you will see settings. Clicking on that will open up the settings window. Looking at the settings image above, In the left hand pane there is a list of several area's that you can configure, i.e. Accounts, Friends, Family, In-Game etc. Look for the one that says Interface and click on it. Then in the right hand pane you should see a large button called favorite window. Click on that small arrow to the right of whichever window is mentioned, (defaulted to Store). This opens a drop down menu where you can select any of the windows you see in Steam, e.g. Store, Library, Community as well as others such as News, Friends, Servers etc. From this list select Library, then click on the okay button that's located in the bottom right of the settings window. Now, when you boot up Steam it will always open directly to your Steam library, where you should see all of the games you've purchased.

I've also posted in the installation section of my review 'at the top of these comments' a small image showing where you click to bring up the window that enables you to input Steam codes.

The default location where Steam games are installed is C:/Program files/Steam/SteamApps/Common/

The image below shows part of my Steam library. Any game you've purchased but not installed will show up as a slightly faded name, whereas any games that have been installed will show up as bold names. (see image below)
installed not
Because I have a lot of games I've also created categories, which enables me to put all the games of a similar type or genre in the same location (I've created over 400 categories). To do that you right click on the game you want to categorize and select 'set category' . You don't need to set categories if you don't want. The main reasons I do it is becasue I can't remember the names of many of my games any more due to memory problems I have, plus, if I had them all listed together as the list is almost 9000 games it takes ages to scroll through them effectively; so categorizing them when I purchase a game helps me to find particular games I'm looking for much easier and much faster.

I hope the above was helpful. Do let us know if you find your Steam games. If you can't I would definitely contact Steam support.

...........................Moderator Comment................................
Please read my explanations elsewhere in answer to others comments. I've tried to explain the issue. We can't ask a developer to give literally thousands of codes away, if only half of those are used. Instead the team ask for what they think will be asked for based on averages from other Steam games given away here. This game has been more popular than expected, so the team have asked for more keys, which the team have recently announced they have secured.

Moderator: Just after I posted this original comment, I realized why I couldn't get a key--there weren't any left! As I get older I find that obvious things can take a while to become obvious to me. So, in exasperation, I just closed the lid on my computer and walked away. When I saw this response in my email, I was so thankful. You really are a great help with this site, but now I can figure out Steam! Thank you again for the screen shots and detailed instructions. Again you are using inappropriate language. Please consider that this is a family oriented site, with children also visiting. Please refrain from using such language in future.. Thank you.
The giveaway team don't want to oversubscribe the number of keys they ask for. please remember they are getting these keys virtually for free. They look at past giveaways and base the number expected to be requested on an average. sometimes that average is exceeded. the team then contact the developer for more keys. This has already happened. One of the team posted a comment recently, which I've now tied to the top of the comments.

The giveaway team will have asked for a specific number of keys based on the average number of community members that have been applying for these codes. This happened several weeks ago, where the demand was much higher than expected, so the giveaway team got more keys. due to the delay, the giveaway was also extended. If you failed to get a key, do check back later to see if they have managed to secure more keys.

Sigh, why are so many developers on Steam now suddenly developing in unity or gamemaker. I think I had 3 games recently that follow the exact same m.o as this one, in fact even the graphics and map layouts are almost identical.
Short, not interesting, nowehere what is "sold" in the blurp
*Vast, immersive map filled with secrets and surprises.- I don't know their definition of filled unless they call trees and battery packs (oh and mines) surprises
*Randomly spawned battery packs for a new experience every time. - Now they are here, next playthrough they will be 10 pixels more to the left
*Spooky 3d environment with vivid graphics. really? "vivid Graphics? No Man's Sky has vivid Graphics, this however is a dark hole
*Interactive storyline with cut scenes and journal feature. uh..... where? what did I miss?
*Challenging Steam Achievements. On Steam that IS a selling point however challenging? not so much

thank yuio for the game dev and GGOTD but this was a bummer for me

...........................Moderator Comment................................
I reckon it's the proliferation of easy to use game engines, some of which are free, and many available via the Steam platform. Have you noticed the number of RPG's made with RPG maker on steam recently. You could get the latest version of RPG Maker as well as earlier versions bundled with loads of the dlc via Bundle Stars for 90% off several moths ago. In fact I've seen RPG maker and other game engines on sale via a couple of bundle sites selling dirt cheap. All of the many dlc's for RPG maker are also always on sale for 75% off (apart from the latest releases) every time we have a big sale on Steam. speak to you soon. :)

Same happened to me with the activation codes. Having such a low number of activation codes for a site that wants to attract people is frustrating since its only 1 pm and the codes are all gone.

...........................Moderator Comment................................
The gamegiveaway team only ask for the average that they expect to see downloaded. Based on previous figures the number of codes should have been enough, but the game was obviously more popular than expected. Please remember the team are getting the keys directly from the developer and they are free. Asking for too many is just plain cheeky. So far the team have always managed to get more keys when they have run out, and even extend the time that they can be applied for (usually). The team have now secured more codes.

Obviously the game is/was very popular. I'm hoping the giveaway team will be able to secure more licenses, so please do check back later. I like Steam, and today's game looks like it's worth a try. Thanks Whiterabbit for the helpful description!

When I click on the download button, the GAOTD page refreshes and nothing more happens except the number of available free licenses gets smaller.

I disabled all script, pop-up and Flash blockers. I guess it was not meant to be today. First time I've had this problem. I'm running the Opera browser on a Vista 32-bit system that has always worked before. If GAOTD has quit supporting this combination then it's good-bye until I can get a new PC (maybe next spring?). Anyone else able to get this to work with Opera? (Chrome no longer supports Vista, and I can't get Firefox to run more than a few minutes before it crashes, even after doing a complete "reset" and reinstall).

Sorry to hear you are having such problems. I hope you get it sorted sooner than later. By the time i applied for a key (not for myself, but for another community member, all the keys had gone. i'd not actually noticed the count down.

I was thrilled to see this game today, because I'd actually heard of it and heard it was pretty good and the kind of game I especially enjoy. However, I won't install a "steam client" so I can't get this one. I do want to say that I totally understand when some of the giveaways require, say, an email address, or contain ads, etc. since no one can afford to just give things away without some value to them. But installing a whole separate program in order to download and play games is not comfortable for me, although I do understand that many here run the steam client with no concerns. It's not the "hoops" or providing info, etc. that I object to; it's the requirement to install an extra program, even though I know you'll assure me it's safe. Hope this helps to clarify my concerns vs. those who just say "I hate Steam".

I was seriously considering attempting to download and play this free offering, but after reading the comments, I think I may have to pass. I'm already on satellite internet, notoriously slow and undependable, with a low bandwidth package, slow connectivity and all that that implies.

As a retired college professor, I can understand your frustration with some of the repetitive comments and complaints, but I would question the use of snarkasm as a means of conveying information. Trust me, I used to teach Freshman Composition, and after the umpteen hundredth time a student asks "what do you mean when you say MLA format," it's almost impossible to NOT give them a good dose of sarcasm and derision.

Myself, I appreciate the service you and your group proved everyone on both sides of the monitor. Please, keep up the good work.

Still not so sure about that Steam thing, though. Needs more consideration on my side.

I had no problems getting the STEAM key and downloading/installing the game on my WIN 10 x-64 desktop. For me, the jury is still out on whether I will keep it or not.
I found the font used somewhat difficult to read. The game seemed to react sluggishly when using my mouse and would either over-correct or under-correct. Movement was jerky throughout the scenes - even the introduction when I was doing nothing but watching. Instruction was murky (but then again, maybe it was just me....).
My computer is not a gaming computer and is an older one, so that may have something to do with it. The concept of working in the dark is a great one!!

Every time I download the setup file, I get a warning that the file is "corrupt". So I delete it. When I go through my Steam account, it says I need to "BUY" it.

Please explain how I can get this as a free GOTD? How do I download this from Steam without going to the "buy" portion? A few simple steps to clarify this would be most helpful. Thanks

Mewzical, Okay - I should have read down to the bottom of this page. There I would have found the link to the FAQs for this game. Apparently, the setup file is not corrupt but rather it's my anti malware program picking up the Themida based protection that was put on this file. So I'm going to go ahead and proceed to open and install the setup file.

Mewzical,

This is assuming you already have STEAM on your computer. Once you open the email with the key, it will give you instructions for getting the game.
Basically, what I did, was open the STEAM client on my computer (and make sure you're signed in to your account). At the bottom of the box (lower left-hand corner), it has a drop down menu for +add a game. One of the choices is to enter a STEAM key. Chose that option and follow the directions. It will download the game into your STEAM account. Find the list of your games option on the screen. Choose that and you can download the game to your computer. Hope this helps.

Mewzical, Did you actually read WhiteRabbit's review before placing this comment as it is explained into detail how to activate the game on Steam, and what setup you talk about? there is no download so where ever you got a "setup file" it was not from GGOTD, you got a key in youir email that you need to activate on Steam

Reply   |   Comment by Mavadelo  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Mavadelo, Yes I did and that is the whole problem. I cannot get the setup file. It downloads as FVV file and when I try to "run" it I just get numbers on a notepad page. Everyone makes this seems real simple, but there is something odd here.

I've given up on this game.

Steam again? Too bad you can't contact them by simple email without providing ridiculous amounts of information . I'll Pass-waste of time. You want us to use Steam? "Each time" you offer one of their games provide a quick contact phone number or email. I've got money tied up there I can't even use. If they actually want to promote their site they would do this. All I see happening is more people turning away.
Thanks though - keep it up.
I've been able to download a few games and I appreciate it.
Wont' touch anything from steam.

...........................Moderator Comment................................
Hi Skybase, There will always be non-Steam games offered here, so those who do turn away are basically cutting off their noses to spite their faces. The great thing about Steam is that there are well over a hundred million current users. As more of those discover the potential to get free Steam keys here, I reckon the numbers will easily overtake the number that purport to be leaving this site.
Each to their own though. If you don't like Steam, just move on to the next hopefully non-steam game (tomorrows game is definitely not a Steam game)

Reply   |   Comment by skybase  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

skybase, Sorry but nothing you nor anyone else can say will persuade me to install a 'nosey' client on my PC. I'm not interested in playing against other users, so I don't give a hoot how many Steam users there are.

Steam works for YOU, that's great. But there's no need to add that people who don't like Steam are 'cutting off their noses to spite their faces;' I find that a tad insulting and rude. Signing off with 'each to their own' doesn't negate the slur implied by 'cutting off their noses' IMHO. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and presume you didn't intend any offence though. :)

So yes, skybase, a significant number of us are just not comfortable with the whole Steam concept, full stop. Perhaps some have been burned by game console contracts and don't want any more hassle like having to close and reopen bank accounts to stop the subscriptions; for myself, as I said, I don't like the idea of being forced to log on to "something" just to play a game. Just like some of us don't want nor need a 'smartphone' or a non-CRT TV set or a Microsoft account. :)

From skybase,
Thank you for your response. You didn't say if this was white rabbit. I don't have any problem with Game Giveaway of the Day. I think it's a fantastic site and I think you/they/white rabbit do an unbelievable job! Especially the time taken to do screen shots and the explanation of the games! I have no intention of leaving and have suggested the site many times over many years to others and will continue to do so. One cannot stop progress, I understand this and would never hold it against you.

I "WANT" to use steam. I've downloaded two games and put 25$ into my account but am unable to contact them because they require too much information. The first game was Elite Dangerous that was actually free but when I went to play it weeks later I found that I had to download an additional file from a different company (?) in order to play the game - and that did not go well. When I went to email Steam the specific information they required about the game, version, etc. etc. was so voluminous that I wasn't able to contact anyone. I'm left with the impression that the STEAM support network was purposely designed to save on labor by making it too difficult to contact someone.

When you have a problem downloading a non-steam game here at GOTD there is always white rabbit and other regulars there willing to help you out. No problem there.

So Steam, if you are out there and you are trying to gain customers instead of turning them away and want honest input about improving your games why don't you step up to the plate and provide an email address that allows one to access help with just their email address and password?

In the mean time I'll continue praising Game Giveaway of the day and ripping STEAM.

Thank you GOTD Team for allowing me to say so!

I've tried three times to sign up for a Steam account. Each time they tell me the password is incorrect. Then I try to get a support account. Same thing. I give up.

Is the password case sensitive? Are you copy pasting the password; if so you may be adding a space. Don't mean to come over condescendingly, sometimes the most obvious reasons can be missed. I've created four Steam accounts since 2009, two for my children and a backup account which we used when friends visit and I've never had problems with signing in with the passwords I've created. If you are unable to sigh in you should be able to request a new password by clicking on the Having trouble signing in link.

Wendy,

It occurred to me to ask if you'd checked the availability of the name you wanted to use? If you tried to use a name that's already used by someone else, you won't be able to set up the account.
