I tried to download and install this game three times.
I have Windows 7 Home Premium - 64bit, Pentium Dual-Core E5800 @ 3.20Ghz. 4 Gb memory.
It downloads with no problems but when I open the zip file and click run, a small window pops up for a millisecond and nothing happens after that.
I went to My Play City to try and get it from there, but there was no listing for it.
I'm really disappointed because it looks like a really interesting game, and I love Hidden Object games.

Marlline,

Hi Marlline, You can get the game for free via the following link, though it does include low level adware (similar to MPC games)

http://www.freeridegames.com/games/814050/nearwood_collectors_edition

I found another site called gogo free games, but I've never checked them out security wise. Maybe do some Google searches first if you decide to go with this one.

This wouldn't even start downloading. This came from BigFishGames. I've been having problems downloading other games from BigFishGames. It just clocks. Anyone else?

The 2017 giveaway was definitely the Collectors Edition, because I still have it on my PC.

This is one of the few games I finished twice. That's the best recommendation I can give! I had it on Windows Vista, and grabbed it again in 2017 for my Win 10 PC where it runs just fine. Also got it on Steam. I've even listened to the music files when I wasn't playing the game. Everything about this game is first class.

I just checked my shortcut and no compatibility settings needed to be made, except it has "Run as Administrator" checked. Not sure if that's needed.

To those having problems selecting items, In some HOG games to select an item, you must put it together by selecting the items in the correct order. Such as a painting, then the picture frame, before you can then select the completed picture with the frame! I haven't played this game since I originally downloaded it here so I can't remember if this is the case here or not! Just a suggestion!

Downloaded to 2 different computers running Windows 10. First download failed to create a folder with the 3 files. Second download created the folder, but could not install from that - got error messages. Since I have limited internet downloads, I have wasted over 2 gigs trying to get this. I love hogs and this looks like it was beautiful.

Reply   |   Comment by Lynette  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Lynette, did you unzip the folder that you downloaded?
and I find that to install anything I need to first disable my antivirus (I have AVG but I've heard others need to do this also) otherwise it won't properly install. The games given away here are safe, its just the wrapper throwing a false alert to my antivirus.

Reply   |   Comment by Marie  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Marie, The folder was showing the normal 3 items. My antivirus never has a problem with the downloads. Yet when I clicked on the app, it connected with GGotD, I gave the OK to go ahead and then got the file error message. I tried several times, but it just wouldn't do anything.

I tried one last time and downloaded it again. Same result. The specific error message I get is "Failed to launch the program."

In both yesterdays game and this one, I had objects in the HOG screens that would not allow me to click on them. I had to uninstall them as this made them unplayable. Its a pity, as I was looking forward to playing them.

Terry A Sutherland,
I sometimes find that I can't click on an object - either in a HOG or an item that needs to be collected. I find that I have to go into the game Options and then untick Full Screen and go into a windowed mode. Once I have clicked on the item, I go back into Full Screen mode.
I have no idea why this happens, but it normally happens once or twice in a game.
I hope this helps for future giveaways.

Downloaded and installed with no problems. However, when playing the game and trying to find items, I can't click on certain items to collect. No matter how many times I try to click on the item, I still can't select it. This is the second game I downloaded and couldn't play. I guess I have to buy it to get it to work. Waste of time. Uninstalled.

Windows 10 x64 Pro. Well fast enough d/l. Long extraction, long installation, even long loading the launch game. First launch try was from the installation offer. Game goes to black screen, back to desktop. Try icon. Ditto. Mess w/ properties like Win 8, as Admin. Ditto. Game gets uninstall treatment. Thanks anyway. First one of these in a while. Too bad had to be on a large timewaste.

how exactly does one install a .gcd file? do I have to download the .exe file again to be able to install the file?

Reply   |   Comment by mystik  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

mystik,

If you only got a setup.gcd file in your download, it did not complete properly so download again. After you unzip the download, the folder should contain 3 items: readme.txt, setup.exe, setup.gcd. You install with the setup.exe file and do not need to touch the .gcd file.

Extremely slooooow download this morning. Not related to the size; it's not that the whole file takes longer; I expected that. But the actual download speed is very slow today, which rarely happens here. I'm downloading despite it being another repeat as I do remember enjoying this game; I guess one of the advantages to getting older is that you don't remember the details as much :).

Disappointed...I know we will get a repeat of previous games given away occasionally but why soooo many in a row this month? I love the point and click adventure games. Well I can only hope things will improve soon so I can be extra thankful this Thanksgiving. Still I am grateful for this site and all it has offered. It has truly been a blessing!

unruly, If you like point and click adventures this one is on steam and I highly recommend it. Put out by Stuck In Attic, just 3 people, artwork is hand done...Gibbous A Cthulhu Adventure.

In Brief:
Purported to be the last Hidden Object game the developer MagicIndie softworks will be creating (the developer of the excellent Brink of Consciousness games). You'll find this a gorgeously illustrated Hidden Object game, with quality puzzles and excellent HOG scenes. HOG fans won't be disappointed. There's options for wide screen and standard monitors and three modes of play, casual, normal and expert, so all community members should find a niche within this game where they can enjoy the game play without it being too difficult. I love the fly by you see on the main menu, it reminded me of the 3D scene I sat through when we last visited Disney in Florida
This is a large download so for those with very slow internet connections I would advise downloading as soon as you are able
Scoring:
Game play: 9
Graphics: 9
Audio: 8
Replayability: 7
Originality: 7
Fun Factor: 8

48 out of 60 = 8 out of 10
You can see my review and all 75 comments from when this was given away almost four years ago (24th January 2016) HERE where it received a positive 76% rating out of 309 votes.
Thanks to Delenn for posting details of another game being given away via Steam HERE called DashBored. Don't forget that Epic Games have two new games to give away this week, i.e. Costume Quest a turn based strategy adventure game based around Halloween and SOMA a sci-fi horror game about identity, consciousness, and what it means to be human. Next Thursday 7th November these change over to Nuclear Throne a post-apocalyptic rogue-like top-down shooter and Ruiner a brutal action shooter set in the year 2091 in the cyber metropolis Rengkok. Finally check out the forum thread I've posted HERE regarding a share of the rewards for subscribing to the Humble Monthly bundle.

Whiterabbit-uk, Has the previous giveaways also been the "collector's Edition"?

Reply   |   Comment by Mark  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Mark, Yes. it was the Collector's Edition. Great opening scenes, nice graphics throughout, and decent game play. Of course that all equals out to a large dl.

Mark, The one given away in 2016 was NOT the Collector's edition. I got it then and its just under 800 MB, while this one is over 1 GB. You can confirm this by following the link for it that is in the review.

According to the Big Fish page for it, the CE gives us a bonus chapter, wallpaper, and concept art.

Mark, sorry for the late reply. no the previous giveaway that I linked to was not a collecter's version, though I think someone mentioned that it was given away back in 2017 as well. I've not checked that one .
