Matchmaker: Curse of the Deserted Bride

If you miss today's game giveaway you can get the game for free HERE; however, please do be aware of the issues surrounding games from such sites compared to the game giveaway site - see forum post about problems and the weekly roundup of games, both of which I used to include with my reviews, (see below for links)

In Brief

A well made Hidden Object game with some excellent mini games included. Overall I gave this game a 8 out of 10, though it scored some 9's for game play, graphics, fun factor and mini games.

Suggestions:

For those who find this game not to their liking, instead of posting a few words saying you think this is a waste of time, or other words to that effect, would you instead give some feedback detailing why you don't like the game and how could it be improved from your point of view. If you don't like this genre at all, explain why. There are thousands of subscribers to the game giveaway of the day every weekend which makes this an ideal forum for giving developers ideas as to what their consumers (i.e you) would like to see in a game. For example, you could suggest extra content that you would like to see that would make it more appealing to you.

If you wish to see the problems section, which I've now incorporated into the FAQ's thread you can find it HERE and the recent games deals (now called The Weekly roundup of Game Deals) is HERE. I've not posted the installation section yet, just not got around to doing so. In the meantime, if you have problems installing the game, just post a comment here, thank you.

The Game:

There is some standard HOG game play such as Pressing the hint button to get clues on how to proceed further. The inventory bar holds any found items until they are needed. To access these items to use in specific scenes just hover over the inventory bar and click on them to pick them up. There's a journal which as you progress can help with puzzles and other tasks you need to perform to progress in game for example when Mrs Jones takes a rented room it need s decorating. you'll find a list of thinks that need to be done to accomplish this. some items are unreachable so you'll need to move certain objects around to be able to carry out some of the objectives. you'll find this type of process throughout the game. The mouse pointer will change to either a magnifying glass if you need to inspect something closer or a hand if you need to interact with it.

When booting the game up for the first time it will start in full screen mode. To progress you will first need to create a profile. Once this has been done you can access the main menu where you can go to settings to change the screen to windowed or change the mode from un-timed (default) to timed to make the game more challenging. You can as usual adjust the music and sound effects volumes via sliders.

matchmaker 013
matchmaker 014
On starting a new game you first get series of story boards telling you the story of how no one had wed over the last 20 years, ending with the matchmaker Helen Jones appearing on the scene. These story board appear quite frequently, but can be skipped if you wish. Personally I find they give a more immersive feel to the game. The first several level are inter-dispersed with tutorial windows telling you about the game. Unfortunately these cannot be turned off, but only last for a short time once all aspects of the game have been introduced, for example the hint button located in the bottom left corner of the screen is a cupid.

There are mini games inter-dispersed between the levels. These can be skipped if you wish, but I would recommend trying them becasue some are really well made and different to those many games include . Some were quite original and others challenging. The first one is a safe with a 3 dial system, to open the safe you have to dial in the correct code (obviously), which are two numbers and a letter. The mechanics of this puzzle were fantastic. If you can't figure the combination you can skip the puzzle by clicking on the Cupid hint button and it will be automatically dialed for you becasue you do need to see what's inside the safe to complete the first HOG scene. I've included a screen capture of the correct code in the slideshow, so please don't watch it if you don't want to know what the combination of the safe is. The second puzzle involves you filling up the boot of a taxi cab with items, but you can only put them in in a certain way, basically a shape puzzle. Both of these puzzles were okay and I was really impressed with the quality of the safe puzzle, even though I had to use a hint for the combination.

matchmaker 017
matchmaker 018
There are a variety of hidden object scenes such as finding silhouettes of object or actual images of objects, as well as items you need to decorate a room, or tools and hardware to fix a cars etc. Some objects are hidden in drawers, cupboards and safes whereas others are locked behind puzzles or other items and others require objects that can be found in the scenes to facilitate their use, for example when decorating the room, you need the step ladders to replace the ceiling lights and curtain rail. The puzzle are generally quite imaginative and very well done graphically. The HOG scenes are some of the best I've seen in quite some time and the animations are excellent. I've only explored a tiny proportion of the game so far and was keen to add more to this review, but I started late and we are already over a quarter of the way through the giveaway day , so I had to stop any further exploration of today's game. I used to get up to 3 or 4 days notice of the games we were getting and often i was able to download and activate the games so that i was able to prepare a review before the giveaway went live, but that hasn't been the case for quite some time now, so I usually have to wait till the game goes then it can take me up to six hours to play and then write up a review unless I can find one already written, which I will then use.

Other Reviews

You can see some mini reviews of today's game via the Big Fish community HERE as well as answers to some issues and other comments about the game in the Big fish forums HERE and HERE. I checked to see if there was a walk-through of this game, but every link i found sent me to the same Yrjie games page, where only the first part of the walk-through was available. There is a download link for the walk-through on that page but it just takes you to a gash page with a few buttons that look suspect. If anyone does find a genuine walk-through, please do post a link here.

Conclusion:

If you are going to comment on this game please leave useful feedback, be it positive or negative, and suggest other things you'd like to see that would make playing this game a more positive and/or enjoyable experience. This is the third game we have been given by the developer Sugar Games (they game us Wedding Salon and Rainbow Web 3 as well); lets make a good impression so that they will give us more of their games. :) Thank you.

I've really enjoyed playing Matchmaker 2 despite my aversion for these types of games. I highly recommend Matchmaker: Curse of the Deserted Bride to both beginners and seasoned players due to the two available modes.

Extra information

The problems section that used to be posted here in the Game review is now included in the Game Discussion FAQ's thread; which you can find HERE.

I've updated the games section that used to be posted with the review. The thread is now called 'Weekly round up of game deals, formerly the games section of the weekly reviews. You can find the new thread (which I've posted in the sticky section of the game discussion forums to make it easier to find if you are perusing the game discussion forums) HERE.

The latest free game over on Origin has changed to the excellent FPS game Medal of Honor Pacific Assault. It's a little dated compared to the latest FPS games, but is still a great game with excellent graphics. It was released around 2005 so should easily play on most computers of today.

You can get it HERE. Please note that you do require the Origin game platform to be able to download and install the game.

If you are having problems installing the game check the thread I've linked to above. If you can't find any fixes check the comments made below and over the last few weeks for suggestions. Thank you.

Just finished the game and plan to play it again. I've played HOG before and tired of the repetition; that was not a problem with this game. Beautiful graphics and it was fun - and sometimes frustrating - finding other rooms to search or cabinets that opened, and even keys in one drawer to open another.

Sorry for the late comments but wanted to make sure that I told the developer and GOTD how much I LOVED this game. The only improvement I could ask is that the mouse response could have been a wee bit quicker. During some of the puzzles (as in puzzle pieces) it would become slightly stuck. Yes I did make sure my mouse was clean but I did not check the options in the game to alter the mouse speed if there is such an option. All in all a great challenge and for me far above the timed management games or the boring, mind melting match three. I give it a 10! Thanks again GOTD and Sugar Babies for a fun giveaway.

Hi Laura, there's really no need to apologise. At least you have commented. 99.99% of the giveaway community don't bother to comment at all. To be honest. I don't see how anyone can make a proper comment on these games unless they have played them through. For most community members that would be impossible on the actual day of the giveaway and which is probably the reason only 0.01% of the giveaway community, which number at least forty thousand people or families bother to comment.
I do think if we got a lot more constructive comments here we would be seeing more developers interested as it makes an ideal fi=orum for feedback for developers, who can then improve their games to the specs wanted by the community. Thank you for your feedback :)

A lot of newer mice include ajustable sensitivity. Mine have two button next to the mouse wheel one for turning down the sensitivity and one for increasing it. I have abreakout game, which i could never play becasue the mouse response was always really slow, so, by the time i'd managed to move my old mouse to the position the ball was going to be, the ball had already been lost. It was a fantastic game, and i was so pleaseed when I purchased my first razer mouse several years ago to find that being able to adjust the sensitivity on the fly (i.e. while in game directly from the mouse was game changing. I slso found I became much better at shooting games, for example having your mouse set to high sensitivity while playing a sniper oriented game makes it really hard to target your opponent due to the mouse cursor moving to fast, wneras turning down the sensitivity really helped. The converse was so for say a sub machine gun, where speed and not accuracy was important. havng the mouse set to a high sensitivity allowed me to move my weapon into position quickly. Those are just two example. When you next upgrade your mouse i recommend buyin a mouse that has the ability to change the sensitivity on the fly. They can be purchased cheaply these days. The last one I purchased cost me over £120, but I like Razer mice, you can get Logitech mice or other mice such as the Steel Series much cheaper and they do basically the same.

I finally finished the game so I can post all of my feedback.

I really like this game and because I really like it there are lots of details in my review rather than some vague ideas. The graphics are great. The hidden objects are well integrated into the scenes and relent to the story.

Suggestion: Do something different with the first hidden object location. Here it was washed out and the color scheme caused problems. I can imagine that it would turn off people who might be interested in the game if that wasn't their first encounter.

I loved the way the hint arrow worked. I like that it can be ignored by those that don't want extra assistance. For those who need it or want to play an easier setting, it can indicate that there is nothing left in a particular location that is on the list and will point towards an object without needing to trigger the hint.
Suggestion: Have the hint arrow indicate the location of the scene of another object if there is no more objects in the current scene. The one issue I have is that in the hunting lodge, I couldn't find the last location and the hint button doesn't cover this situation.

On the whole, they did a good job with interesting and wide range of different looking characters. I liked the fact that the people in the game looked like real people rather than perfect pretty people.
Suggestion: to have broader appeal, having more diversity would be good.

I am guessing they were really stretching for the last match and were running out of ideas. The writer was not a fashionista. He looked to be an older man who is happy to be in a comfy sweaters and doesn't pay any attention to fashion. The was a big discord for me after how well the game did up to this point. Another place that was frustrating to me was the forest ranger and the retired general had many guns, bombs, bullets, as well as a bow and arrow that hunting/blowing things up/interest in fighting/death should have been part of their profile. Even the writer has Russian roulette. It counted as a gambler but is also focused with death.

An overall game suggestion: I would have liked to see the matchmaker find matches for the some of the people that didn't get chosen. That would have felt more rounded and could open up an opportunity for a different way of matching people since we already would know their profile.

I liked the voodoo doll search aspect and the variety of the mini games was good. Setting up the date and creating a present were nice touches. The list of what to do being in the diary rather than on the scene worked well. Mostly it was common sense and the diary acted as backup if someone got stuck.

The emphasis of everyone must have love and be paired off is a little over the top, but the mechanics of the game could easily transfer to other genres. I would be interested in those games if they existed.

Very well done and thank you for the game.

Thank you GGOTD - I loved this game, especially as it can be played in a relaxing, untimed mode. Lovely graphics and not so difficult that it becomes frustating. Definitely a keeper for me.

Win 7; downloaded and installed without problems. Decent storyline, not too much backtracking, easy enough hidden objects, appropriate sized. Loved the fact the game was timed and untimed which is excellent. I wished all HOGs had an untimed featured. Not sappy for romantic based storyline. Was long enough to be worth the download, short enough to keep me interested. I really liked the game.

HI,

The game downloaded pretty fast and set up quickly. The graphics are good and the game is very easy to follow. I feel like it was made for younger age also, but all ages can enjoy the story. It is similar to most games of this genre with finding the hidden items and puzzles, which sort of makes it run of the mill these days. One thing I might change is a pop up Thank you for another good game!!

OK, I have to speak up about this annoying requirement here to have to give my e-mail address to you in order to get a download link.

It's been a few weeks since any titles here have caught my interest, but I really loathe this assumption that we all use farcebook or some other social irritation. WE DO NOT!

I have been a fan of GOTD for many years, but this new "requirement" to either have forcebook or cough up my e-mail like a beggar every time is very much NOT to my liking and if it is the new way, then I may very sadly have to stop using what has been in all respects a very enjoyable site.

Perhaps this is what Stephen (White Rabbit) meant a few weeks ago about changes, and why he too is considering his position (or was).

Seriously, GOTD, at this rate you will drive away me and many, many other people like me — who would rather crawl naked over broken glass than ever use social media — to the likes of Jenkat and other game sites. But maybe you don't care about that, as perhaps we are no longer of use to you despite our years of loyal support and encouragement up to now? If that's true, then we really do have to part company at this point.

................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi Cad, please excuse the late reply. You don't need to use an email or Facebook to get the download link. Just go through the motions. i.e. click on the Facebook button to open the Facebook login page, then cancel it. The download link will change to green and you are then able to download.

Download and installation without a problem.
Great graphics - played some scenes and looking forward to play through it.

I am maybe not the one to say this but I love the game (despite being totally unromantic the story got me with the voodoo doll - I love dark mystic things).

Thanks a lot for this one.

Robert: This sounds like a classic case of needing to temporarily disable your AV. I sometimes need to do this with AVG, and almost always when I used to use avast!.

Most AVs allow you to disable them for maybe 5 or 10 minutes (best to take those lowest-time options to prevent any risk of you forgetting to re-enable your AV afterwards) by right-clicking their icon in the System Tray. The time to do this is just BEFORE you install the game.

Try installing the game again and don't re-enable the AV until the activation AND install have completed.

Hope that helps!

Hi Brent, please excuse my extremely late reply. I fell asleep about 9 hours ago . when i checked the comments there were over two pages to moderate, wit around 50 comments. Usually it would take me 2 or 3 hours if i posted a reply to every comment. I've had to be selective. The actual executable is labelled Matchmaker2 and the installed folder is MatchmakerCurse OfTheDesertedBride_Game. Because most game giveaways don't install to the registry the best way to find the game is to reinstall it and make a note of the installation path. Sometimes games are installed to the previous game giveaways folder (due to the giveaway cookie being corrupted), hope this helps

Give this a try and see if it works. Once you download the .zip file, go to the folder it is in (usually Downloads) and right click Open. Copy Setup.exe and Setup.gcd (has to be both), Go to your C:\Games folder and Paste. Right click on the Setup.exe and Run As Administrator. Go through set up and check to see if it put it in there.

Downloaded and found the .exe file. Windows explorer took for ever to open it, and then whilst that was happening Windows decided to block the file and close the programme. In the meantime I got connected to the GGOTD site, which tells me I have successfully activated the programme - but I haven't.

I had temporarily disabled AVG because I know that can be a problem, so goodness knows what happened.

Disappointed, and frustrated, because this looks like my sort of game.

New ipad user. Is it possible to download this to an Air2? If so, how do I do this?

Thanks.

Toni, this giveaway is a game specifically for Windows devices. I'm not familiar with any Apple kit; but if the Air2 isn't running Microsoft Windows (almost certainly not), then the answer is no.

The Sugar Games site says there is a Mac version of today's gaiveaway for purchase; but again, I don't know whether or not that version will run on your Air2.

Hi WhiteRabbit and GOTD games and as always thanks for your efforts,

Thanks so much Sugar Games, for what is going to be an enjoyable game, when I can devote more time to it. Just the few scenes I have played I liked. The intro is very gripping and does evoke sadness, which sort of surprised me. The game itself, though, is bright and well lighted, so far not too many dark hard to spot items. Do look forward to playing more.

Although familiar with most of the major game creators of this genre, Sugar Games is new to me, so I look forward to sampling more from their selections.

Grateful as always,
snow

Nice HOG game, installed fine on Win10 system. Less romantic, less blurry, more focus on the details and Sugar Games has a winner at hand. Just like RainbowWeb.
Sugar Games has found a way to spice up classic gameplaying.Thank you for offering those games to GOTD.

Ok Windows 10 x64 Pro to D: internal. Made shortcut. Nice background music for a change. Puzzles within HOG are cool. To solve the first tricky one of the safe combination w/o Skip, first look elsewhere in the room like in the desk or such. Nice look & settings. Thanks for it. 8.5/10

Darling game, love the developer. Family-friendly, generally happy games. I played it when it came out so I don't recall specifics but I have a pleasant memory of it, despite the fact that Im not a fan of most mini-games. I can handle any that are ridiculously frustrating brain teasers.
And... weeping angels! O.o lol

Though I have never been one to believe in romance and draping cars with flowers, this is a nice game to play while listening to a mystery audio book.

Thanks to Sugar Games for providing us with a time passer, and one with nice mini games.

I would like to see an option, once you finish the game, to have access to mini games that increase in difficulty and an option to take some of the nice scenery from the game and make it into jigsaw puzzles of varying sizes. That is how I would suggest improvements for any HO game. Many games of this genre are so dark and spooky.

It would encourage me to finish them as now I generally play long enough to figure out the plot and leave the game never to touch it again. Then I could give a review which I don't feel I can do with honesty now, because I don't finish them.

Thanks White Rabbit for all you do.

Seems to be a nice game. Installed fine on Win7, plays fine. No suggestions yet.

I found it hard to see the lines for the taxi trunk. It took a few tries before I realized that some of the squares snuck into the edges of the car's frame - and some didn't. But then it was good.

I hope she gets the apartment rent free, for all the cleanup and repair she did :-)

It may be a bit "teenage girly", but it's a neat little game with plenty to do and find, plus puzzles along the way. In some respects the plot and storyline are irrelevant, but the game itself and what you need to do are plenty entertaining enough to while away a couple of hours so far.

The game saves where you've got to (by small section, not the exact point), and as each part doesn't take too long to play it's easy to dip into and progress at your own speed, much better than those "shoot-em-up" type games where if you lose all your lives you have to go back to the beginning.

So what if the graphics are a bit creaky and wobbly? The game may well be a bit old but that doesn't matter, what matters is the enjoyment of playing.

I for one give it a big thumbs up, plenty to keep me interested and in my view more entertaining than some of the "match 3" games that have been made available on here recently.

Thank you GOTD for another decent game.

Steve

Here we have a two year old game that looks like a ten year old game. Interesting comments, there, but not ones that entice me to install the game.

I'm a word person. I like words. Words should be used correctly. To see the words "fifty" and "unique" side by side makes strange things happen in my brain.

50 one of a kind, never seen before, brand new, original in all aspects things in a two year old game that looks like a ten year old game? The stretched band of credibility just snapped, dudes.

White Rabbit! TWANG!

I thought it was quite a decent game. Despite this game being released in 2013 I was surprised not to find any reviews on the usual review sites such as Gamezebo, and only one free game site has it on their books. It was given away free via Falmids site a few weeks ago.

Swamp Thing, I know what you mean and I sympathise, but frankly my Russian is non-existent, so I long ago decided to forgive grammatical clangers from Russian software developers. I find them kind of sweet in a way!

That said, maybe you should volunteer your services to game developers to proof-read their scripts and texts at the beta stage? Oh, and if any developers are reading this, yes I would be very interested in doing that myself. ;)

Available at myplaycity[.]com/matchmaker_2/ should you miss it on GOTD today, Big Fish has mixed reviews bigfishgames[.]com/games/7576/matchmaker-curse-of-deserted-bride/

MPC includes "Windows 98/2000/2003/XP/Vista/7" in the requirements -- both MPC & Sugar Games say Direct X 7, so seems a bit older, but on the bright side, minimal requirements man it'll likely run great on lower powered &/or older hardware.

Released in 2013, but no need for higher DX due to animations being quite basic. Still i tohught they were great for this game.

Reply   |   Comment by mike  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

To elaborate, the Big Fish reviews work out to almost exactly average. An almost balanced dispersal of 1 -2 vs 4-5 star votes with only 3 saying average, so the game seems to have polarized the Big Fish voters. However, I would tend to give the nod to the yes votes, because the no's were not in universal agreement, but tended to be a more dispersed collection of individual peeves. About the only consensus viewpoints was that the game was for old school HOG lovers, and the music annoyed enough people to be worth mentioning, but hardly universally.

Nice story, nice game. Some of the graphics are a bit 'wobbly' (swan swimming from sky to water, head of dog in car flying from sky to body), which is a little odd, but otherwise a very entertaining game. Thumbs up.

What a nice HOG, the storyline is quite OK as well.

The only thing that I would change is the way the items are shown when you have to put for example the car together. Open the diary and try to memorize it all ;) is a bit hard...

For at least 3 weeks, I cannot install any of these games. The check of the availability runs well then a window pops up asking if I want to install software informer, I close it and the page of the website opens saying the soft is activated except that...no installation has been performed. I run win 10 and even tried to install with administrator privileges, nothing works. Any idea?

I tried on opening the downloaded program on two Windows 10 machines, the games unzipped ok but they wouldn't install. I used "Run as Administrator" but they just kept activating and then unzipping all the while. I tried changing the Program Compatibility to Windows 7/Vista/XP but the same happened.
Help! What am I doing wrong? Games and programs from GOTD, usually work fine.

Hi Ken, have you checked where the game installs to? Most game giveaways don't install a shortcut. Newcomers to the giveaway project may think that the game hasn't installed. Install again and make a note of the installation path. Once found create a shortcut to the desktop, or wherever you like to keep them.

Ken , Hi! I made the same comment few hours ago and found the answer. I have tried to install it on an old PC with Win XP (Yes...old....I know...No it did not come with the Mayflower!) and it worked perfectly. As far as these programs do not install anything in the registry, I cut it, put it on a usb key then pasted it on the right PC running win 10 x64. As you tried to perform the installation with win XP configuration without success I believe that a change has ben made by Microsoft during a update that the Game's wrapper do not take yet into account. For me 3 weeks ago it was still working. Hope it helps! Have a nice day.

Pat_13, Hi Pat, thanks for your reply.
I've just returned from playing with the grandkids in our local park and thought I'd have another go at installing the game, also the Giveaway of the Day too.
Double-clicked the set-ups of both freebies a few times and checked the running processes with Task Manager.
They were there, all ten of them, so stopped them all running. Tried again. No luck.
Right-clicked the set-up icon, tried Open; then Run as Administrator; then Troubleshoot Compatibility. Still nothing. A Google search brought up a DirectX problem and suggested installing onto a usb stick. No Luck. Copy and Pasted onto the usb instead and tried installing again. Zilch.
I have both 64 and 32 bit computers and neither of them will install. I think that a recent Windows 10 update had changed something, so I Googled again and found instructions on how to check if the Windows Installer in Services was running. It wasn't, so I started it, rebooted, checked again, Nothing doing! Googled again and it suggested a Virus, so did a full scan and Vulnerability scan, checked logs, Clean as a whistle.
I think I'm going to give up now, I've given it my best shot. Through all this though I have noticed that my computer name has changed in the General section of right-clicked Properties. I hope I haven't been hacked, or is it another change made by a Windows 10 update? Off I go to do a full security check. Computers....don't cha love 'em?

..........................Moderator Comment...............................

Since installing win 10 my computer has been up to loads of strange antics, most of them annoying for example right clicking on anything can take several seconds or more before i get a response. even when closing down everything I deem nit necessary the right click and accessing anything in the drop down menu seems to take forever. It's getting to the point i may just save as much as I can from my registry and then format the C drive and start over. I've purchased all of my favorite giveaways, both in the apps and games sections, so all i'd lose is a bunch of converters which are a dime a dozen and are often repeated. Sorry to hear you've had so much trouble installing. :)

Well, after closing down my Internet Security program I managed to get the program to start installing, although now I'm past the installation date!
My security program had updated a few days ago and must have put an exception in for Giveaway of the Day.
It's a newish one I'm using out so I'll have to root around to try and sort this problem out.
Thanks for everyone's help.

.............................Moderator Comment...........................

Hi Ken, it been an ongoing problem ever since the giveaway team were forced into updating the giveaway wrapper (due to hackers ripping of the giveaway games). The wrapper now contains Themida code that is sometimes mistaken for malware, which is why some anti malware suites block the installation. It is mentioned in the FAQ's and problems thread over in the forums. I used to post all of that information here in these reviews, but with the new look forums, all that extra information made my posts look massive due to page layout changes (larger margins, so fewer words to a line, effectively almost doubling the length in appearance of my reviews). You had to do a lot of scrolling to get to the bottom of the page to see other comments. Because some sections of the review were basically repeated every week, I decided to post them in the game discussion forums and link to them from the review. Unfortunately the security and problems section were one of the sections removed.

Glad you got it sorted in the end. :)

Win10 Home 64bit. I couldn't turn the music off. The cursor wouldn't work in the Options section. I did turn off the sound via the arrow buttons on the keyboard. All in all a good game.

..........................Moderator Comment...............................

Thank you for your feedback Suzanne. Maybe the screen resolution you have your monitor set at isn't native to the game, hence the problem with using the mouse in the options section. (just a thought).

Reply   |   Comment by Suzanne  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

Suzanne, when it first loaded it came up in a small screen so I went to Options and clicked Full Screen on and off and it made itself full screen but still the cursor wouldn't work for Sound and Music. The others it did, Full Screen and Timed Mode. So did a compatibility test and I have it at scaling at high DPI settings. At least the screen loads to full screen now. But still those two buttons will not work. Its okay I have taken my speakers off for the time being and its still playable.

This is a Hidden Object game that revolves around a love story. The color palette is bright and feminine. I didn't follow the story much as I never care about them, but judging by the length of the cut scenes, the story may be well developed. You can click through the cut-scene dialogues to make them go faster.

So far it is almost 100% HO. The two puzzles I've come across are extremely easy. The puzzles are embedded in the HO and are required to find objects inside, but the game does provide an in-game hint system and ability to skip the puzzle aspect. I don't think there is a timer on the skipping aspect.

When you first start there is an in-game tutorial as you play. There is no way to stop this. This is great for anyone who has never played one of these before but I found it extremely annoying as I had to stop to click on whatever the tutorial was showing me. Overall it didn't last long but it was intrusive as I kept thinking it was over, then I would activate another information bubble.

My biggest complaint is how difficult the items were to see. It's not that they are well hidden - quite the contrary. It's simply a result of the color palette. Everything looks exactly the same. The overall look of the game is flat blandness. I don't know how old the game is, but it definitely looks like an old school HO game. The dated look itself can be off-putting to people, but coupled with the difficulty in seeing the objects, it's likely that only those who get caught up in the story line will play it through to the end.

Still, the developers seem to have taken great care in making the game, going so far as to specify "mechanical fan" instead of just "fan". At first I thought this was a bit too much hand-holding until I solved one of the mini puzzles in the same scene and found a hand fan. If I hadn't found the mechanical fan first, I would have presumed this was the item and wasted much time trying to find a hot spot.

A combination of apathy towards the story and design aspects has resulted in me disliking the game and deleting it from my system, so I can't whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone. I do think those who don't want one of the now common games of death, destruction, and dismembership or who wish to follow a love story will probably enjoy this game. Even if it is a bit easy, there was enough variety in the first scene to keep things interesting.

..........................Moderator Comment...............................

Thank you for your excellent feedback Melika. As someone who doesn't enjoy HOG's anymore I actually really enjoyed this one. I didn't find the game flat at all. and was impressed with the quality of some of the mini games. That said, we all have a different take on each game. No game will be liked by everyone.

Reply   |   Comment by Melika  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+5)

Yeah, I was thinking that maybe my feelings about it were the result of being up all night and playing it as soon as it was made available. Or it could be that, like you, I have HO over exposure.
Considering how everyone seems to enjoy it, I think I'll give it another go and get a bit further along to see if the puzzles get more challenging and if my eyes/brain adjusts to the color pallet & art style enough to stop hurting.
Regardless of my own feelings, I stand by my belief that this is a well made game others will enjoy.

I got this game recently, and am almost halfway through it, so ...

Sugar Games seem to be made to appeal to young teenage girls who doodle hearts and flowers, but they're so well and innovatively made! In this game, I'm rolling my eyes at adorning a vintage car with a flower garland to set up a first date (I'm really not into superficial flowers-and-candles romance or matchmaking) , but I'm still playing because the game is so well done: hidden-object scenes require you to open drawers or cupboards to find things, and there are many puzzles and tasks in between; our protagonist, Helen, also does her own electrical repairs and repairs cars in the garage!

If Sugar Games ever gets into more adult themes, they'll be a force to be reckoned with:, but I'm still recommending this game just because of it's quality.

..........................Moderator Comment...............................
