The Game:
After scoring a pair of hits with 2008’s hidden object adventure Magic Encyclopaedia: First Story and its follow-up, Magic Encyclopaedia: Moon Light, Alawar isn’t resting on its laurels with the third game in the series. Magic Encyclopaedia 3: Illusions introduces a fresh new graphical makeover and a unique approach to seek-and-find that has you switching between two different layers (one real and one an illusion) to uncover all of the secrets a scene has to offer.
Catherine, the magic academy’s best student, is dutifully studying at the library when she gets an urgent message from her professors via crystal ball. A villain named the Illusionist has stolen an important book from the academy and escaped, leaving a trail of illusions to cover his tracks. The illusions are so powerful that not only have they trapped the professors, but they’ve disguised the surroundings so that it’s almost impossible to tell the difference between what’s real and what’s fake.

Magic Encyclopaedia 3 follows the same tradition as previous games in the series in that you aren’t simply searching scenes filled with random clutter for a list of arbitrary objects. Rather, you’re looking for pieces of key objects that you should put back together to solve puzzles. In one early scene, for example, you must open a drape by first finding all the pieces of the drapery cord. Another challenge involves finding all of the pieces of a gear to repair on old clock, and so on.
The game’s first major departure is a purely aesthetic one. The graphics are still of the hand-drawn variety but they’ve taken on a more colourful and cartoonish bent that’s like the Samantha Swift games. For some this might be an acquired taste, but I found the visuals delightful.
The second twist relates to the gameplay. Because each scene has been doctored by an illusion, there are two ways to look at it (the illusion and the “real” version), which creates two layers to each scene with objects concealed in each. Many of the early puzzles involve manipulating the environment to toggle the illusion on and off, which causes hidden exits, items and other secrets to be revealed.
It’s a highly creative approach, to be sure; even if the game can’t keep it up across all five of its chapters. By chapter two you’ve acquired a pair of magical glasses that allow you to switch between the two versions of the scene at will simply by dragging them over different spots, which was a bit of a let-down at first even though the quality of the puzzles remains high right to the end.

Also clever is the way that solving a puzzle in one scene can affect another scene, like when turning a crank causes the water to drain out of a canal that can then be explored by walking one screen to the south. The ability to walk between scenes is part of the game’s fun, but is rendered slightly frustrating by the fact that exits aren’t always obvious.
The game is quite challenging, and its recharging hints system is a bit of an acquired taste. At first I was frustrating by cryptic messages like “I need to look somewhere else” and “Perhaps I need to change the way I’m looking at things,” until I realized that these seemingly unhelpful messages were the game’s way of telling me that I needed to try a different scene, and switch to the alternate scene view respectively. Once I had that down, the hint system never let me down.
Magic Encyclopaedia 3 comes with a full complement of mini-games too. They range from well-worn (re-assembling a broken mirror, cat’s cradle puzzles and memory games) to slightly more creative (dragging stars to form constellations), but to their credit, all the mini-games have been carefully woven into the story and gameplay. They can all be skipped after a short amount of time has passed, and you get a fanfare whether you’ve legitimately beaten the mini-game or not, which seems a bit like cheating.
The game spans five chapters, each set in a completely different location composed of multiple scenes. None of the places you’ll visit are terribly original ( Egypt, China, the Lost City of Atlantis, and so on), but what the locations lack in originality they more than make up for with style and clever puzzles.
Magic Encyclopaedia 3: Illusions should satisfy fans of casual adventure games who enjoy searching for “fractured” objects that all have a purpose rather than laundry lists of random clutter. And while the game does have a satisfying ending, the door is left open for even more adventures to come.

Conclusion:
I’ve not played the game enough to give a fair conclusion. It looks like a decent HOG with a different take on the graphics. As mentioned by the community member Neme when this was first given away, I agree that some of the hidden objects are rather small and I was forced to use the hint button a few times to finish. Erin Bell who wrote a review for Gamezebo (see 'The Game' section above) said the graphics were hand drawn and colourful and all the objects and mini games served a purpose with fun puzzles and repetitive but pleasant music. On the negative side the hint system took some getting used to and exits weren’t always clearly marked.

Don't forget to check the Epic game site for this weeks freebie, which is the premium AAA game Star Wars: Battlefront II, which is available until Thursday 21st January. You have to have both the Epic Launcher and Origin installed to be able to play the Star Wars game.

Also available until the 17th January (6pm UK time) via the Humble Store is the arcade simulation Bomber Crew. Once you get the Steam key from the Humble store you have to activate it via Steam by the 21st January, after which it will no longer be redeemable; and is also the day the Star Wars game rolls over to a new freebie; the strategy game Galactic Civilizations III.

I'm having problems, too... but I'm having problems with most of my desktop games. I've read, and tried, your response to Franz and it still doesn't work.
I have updated my drivers.
Does all of this have anything to do with Flash ending?

Tad ,

Hi Tad, I don't think so; flash games should still work; what has ended is the support but I may be wrong. If it was flash ending that was the problem, no one would get the game to work. Generally the comments reflect only a small percentage of the community. More often than not (at least in the past), I found (on average) that less than 0.1% (i.e. 1 in a thousand) of the community bothered to post a comment once they had downloaded and installed a game (I could work this out because on the admin page I can see how many people download the game and how many actually activate it.

I did as WhiteRabbit suggested

.... removed by moderator.......... Hi Bayle , I had to delete part of your comment because we are not supposed to post that particular information here, sorry. Free game sites rely on such things to be able to stay open. If what was posted was common knowledge, advertising income would be lost and developers would no longer allow their games to be given away.

The program still crashed at the opening screen.
I am running Windows 10 in the latest update (whatever that number is)

Franz Caruso,

Hi Franz,

From the data you posted, it looks like the link from the MyPlayCity installer is broken.

Whiterabbit-uk, That doesn't work. That's what I do for ALL my MPC games so that's been tried.

Whiterabbit-uk, alas, .... removed by moderator.......... Hi Localhostess, I had to delete part of your comment because we are not supposed to post that particular information here, sorry. Free game sites rely on such things to be able to stay open. If what was posted was common knowledge, advertising income would be lost and developers would no longer allow their games to be given away.
. The program still crashed at the opening screen.

Franz Caruso, i have the same exact problem. here in the crash report of the 3 installment of magic encyclopedia. is there any fix for this? bfg and toomkygames both had the games where dowloaded and both show the same problem only bfg gives the actual error pop up and that game was bought as with toomkygames it was a free download it just crashes indeed after starting the game and the title screen comes up and your kicked out. everthing is up to date. compatibilitie is not the problem as the games just start up automaticaly with the right compatibilitie configs it needs. why is this happening? is because of windows? or is it something that stuck from gamemanagers.

Michael Saks,

Hi Michael, The game exe is wrapped in a Themida based wrapper, which some antimalware suits will block because Themida code can also be used to hide malware. Please let me assure you that the giveaway team check all files added to their download servers with several antimalware suites. Since the project has been running from Dec 2006 to the present, they have never given away a game infected with malware. The games that we get that come from MPC and other free game sites have had low level adware included, but most of that has since been disabled before being added to the download servers. The low level adware that is still present has no effect on your systems and is isolated to the game itself. The only thing that happens now with MPC games is an adverts while the game is loading and your browser opening when you close the game down. The reason for the advert and browser redirection when you close the gam down is to earn money so that the distributor can pay the owner of the games license for allowing them to give the game away for free.

I have been trying to get this game to work under Win 10 for over a year! The first two games of this series install and work fine. This one won't! It installs fine and comes up to show the main menu. Before you can do anything, it just goes blank and then closes the game.

I've tried multiple settings (it does require high DPI scaling to be off to display properly) but it just won't work!

Diane,

Hi Diane,

When I took the screen captures for the review above, they were very small compared to newer games, which would imply that you need to reduce the display settings for this game down to around 1024 x 768; that said, it works on both the monitors that I have connected at the moment at a resolution of 1929 x 1080 as well as 3840 x 2160.

Maybe you need to update your graphic driver? Sorry I can't be of any more assistance. :(

If you've already seen this reply, ignore what I've said above apart from updating your drivers (if needed). I was working on tomorrows game instead of todays. Sorry.

Diane,

Hi again Diane, I finally installed the game.

I'm running Win 10 Pro with the latest Nvidia drivers for my graphic cards (2 x GTX 980 Ti's) and Direct X up to date, the game runs fine on the two monitors I have connected at the moment (ones several years old, the other about three years old). I don't know whether OpenGL is an issue. If updating your game drivers try updating the OpenGL drivers as well.

When I open the options menu, I'm unable to see my cursor. The default cursor is set to Custom cursor. Once I've finally managed to locate and turn off custom cursor, I can see my cursor. With a screen resolution set to 1929 x 1080 the game fills approx' a third of the screen when set to windowed mode which would indicate the game is quite old. I can't really think of any other thing you could try as you've already said you've tried multiple settings ; I presume you've tried the compatibility options as well?

I think the issue you and others are having is related to the screen resolution, but I cannot think of any other fix.

As an afterthought, check the FAQ's thread over in the forums HERE

Whiterabbit-uk, I can't even get to the options menu. I see later comments having the exact same issue I have - main screen comes up and before you can do ANYTHING, it goes away. I cannot see why the first 2 games of this series works fine but this one won't and it's the same from multiple sources so it's the game itself.

Wouldn't work for me - I downloaded and installed it, the title page appeared - and then it turned itself off and returned to the My Play City page. I downloaded and installed again - same result. Pity, it looked as though it was a game I would have enjoyed. Oh well - thank anyway GG.

Installed and when launched game pc hung.
Rebooted and launch game, icon at taskbar cannot see game.

Reply   |   Comment by comgreen  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

comgreen had managed to install and play the game, thank you Whiterabbit-uk.
had remembered the nightmare, flashing activation of giveaway window of game after installation and pc hung. rebooted and launched game, icon at taskbar, no game audio and also cannot see game window, cannot close game window nor exit, so needed to use taskmanager to kill engine(32).
Redownloaded and installed at windows 10 home pc. Set screen resolution 1024x768, and text to 100% recommended instead of 125 before launch game. Game launched with the familiar "do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device" which was missing in the earlier setp, wow, got audio and can see game, No mouse cursor can be seen. The button edge is lighted slightly (guess when the invisble mouse cursor is over the button), went to option and uncheck the custom cursor.

Actually did change mouse cursor to blue color in windows before launch game, but need to uncheck custom cursor to see the same mouse cursor.

I've downloaded and installed the game. However when I try to play it opens on the initial 'play' screen for about 4 seconds before it throws me out. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but got the same result.
