# 33, Swan:
FWIW, a small follow-up.

(About the low resolution of the game...)
"I play all games with the resolution set at 1080 x 760 and the graphics as basic as they are, appear really clear and quite professional on my Windows XP machine."

Your screen resolution is downsized in the game. It will not use 1080 x 760, it's more like 640 x 480 or 800 x 600 (tops).

The difference in quality is evident when you are used to play games in resolutions of 1024 x 768 and up (with at least a 32 bits color depth), like I do most of the time.

No biggy; it's still a good & playable game. But, I just want more (eye-candy) from a game, I'm personally way past the DOS-like graphics in games. Me wants more... ;-)

It looks like it's right up my alley but it doesn't work with Vista. I installed it on my desktop and I get an appcrash every time. I tried to install it on my laptop and it gave me an error and wouldn't install.

I may try to put it on one of my XP machines.

GGotD is the best! I've downloaded some games that I really love. I'm addicted to Roboball and may buy it so I can play it on my other computers!

Thanks for the fun and games. Hopefully I'll find some more that work on Vista. :-)

I have XP home, 900MHz, 512 ram, 45 gb hd with 1/4 of it still available and I'm getting an error message that tells me to check system requirements.
I exceed the requirements. Does anyone have any ideas why the game won't play? Is there a workaround? Thanks

Carol, comment #30, thanks for your kind words; they are appreciated. PAMELA if you haven’t already done so, check back to the comments section for the Ronin Solitaire giveaway, on the 7th May and look at my comment #52 for my Email. The CSI game is still yours if you want it, although I probably won’t send you the case as it adds a big extra to the postal costs. :). It took the GGAotD team over a day to moderate the comment lol, however I did post it towards the end of the giveaway period for that particular game..

I do agree with The Belgian Dude to a certain extent with respect to the quality of some of the games offered by the previous 2 giveaway distributors; however your main argument is a little flawed, or more correctly is only half the story. We are ALL winning with respect to these giveaways. Okay, we don't often get the top notch games. (although the recent giveaway by Alawar of Roboball would seem to negate that statement a little as the game was only released towards the back end of February), but we do get games that would otherwise cost money. I personally don’t mind older games, just as long as they are playable; the graphics and other enhancements are a bonus. Surely it’s the game play that’s important, not the fact that there are several different developers jumping on the band wagon. (I personally think the usual price for these arcade games is overpriced when you compare the quality and playability of many RPG, Simualtors and FPS games such as …….. well there are hundreds of them, many of which can be picked up from games shops and places like Wal mart, Tesco’s and many other large stores for as little as $5. What I do mind are game developers who make a game, for example Super Collapse from ‘Gamehouse’, which because of its popularity, proceeded to improve it; but not to benefit the fans. They instead proceeded to release newer versions instead of updating the original for a nominal fee. You now have Super collapse I, Super collapse II, Super collapse 3, Super Collapse! Puzzle Gallery, Super Collapse! II Platinum, Collapse! Crunch, and Super Pileup, all costing $19.99, thus extracting an exorbitant amount of money from the fans of that particular game. (I could go on with other examples, but you can probably see what I’m trying to point out. I’d much rather get a free game (via the Game Giveaway) from Double Games or Alive Games that has the same basic game play, okay without the extra’s. Except for a few sites that I've bandied around several times over the past few months who do give away commercial games, (these do have a price to be paid in the form of nag screens and in some cases annoying pop ups), most freeware games that I'm aware of never come close to the quality of the games given away here despite the age of the software, or you end up having to reformat your computer because a virus from the provider of “that particular interesting game you downloaded’ has seriously messed with your computer.

Also, why do you ‘consistently’ have to insult certain sections of the community by using statements like:

“which no person with half a brain would pay the outrageous fee of $14.95 for, they will entice people to spend money on their site”

There’s no reason for such a stance. It only serves to alienate your statements to a large extent (IMO). I appreciate most of the comments you make because they do tend to be good constructive criticisms, but ‘please’ try wording your statements with a little more care. Thank you BD.

PS I’m always open to constructive criticism as well. Lol. :D

Have a great weekend folks.

PPS,
not sure whether i did agree with the BD, lol

Well-made game with unusual strategy that is interesting, but (so far) somewhat boring to me. I think that's because the moves are too limited, and there's no real reward other than running up a score which--without an opponent or at least a goal to beat--makes for apathy. Anyway, it's worth keeping and checking out some more. Thanks, GAOTD & Alive Games.

Good afternoon everyone! :)

The game activated and installed easily without any issues on Windows XP.

I played the game for an hour and found it thoroughly enjoyable - it has a need for sound strategy in the higher levels for you to successfully proceed any higher.

The graphics are very basic in this game, however they are clean and professional with pleasing colors. There are only 3 options, individual sliders for sound and FX and a choice of full screen or window mode.

The music is easy to listen to while you're planning out strategies, however there's no choice of different melodies.

Game play is very easy to learn with or without the help screen. While it may resemble the plethora of ordinary match 3s found on the web - it really is dissimilar - unless anyone has found other games where the colors of the cubes/bricks keep changing color or position during the game.

They didn't explain the latter in the help screen, so I was a little confused at first when the screen seemed to alter all the time - but I did work it out.

I'm enjoying this game and would like to thank Alive Games for donating yet another free game for us to assess, review and keep.

Thank you always to the GOTD team also - do they even look here though?

# Chris:

"How come when I download this it tells me I have 14 sessions. I thought it was a free download and not a trial?"

I'm not sure Chris, since I'm not getting that message at all - however I do know that GOTD only releases full versions of software to us for assessment and review. Perhaps you could contact Alive Games directly to see if you can find out?

Graphics have very basic (low resolution) quality in full screen[1],

I can't say that I've found that at all. I play all games with the resolution set at 1080 x 760 and the graphics as basic as they are, appear really clear and quite professional on my Windows XP machine.

Till tomorrow fellow gamers!

I love this site! I discovered it yesterday and think it is truly amazing, I cannot understand any of the negative comments given that all software is free and although temporarily on dial-up whilst changing service providers I am unable to download today's illustrator, yesterday's Glary software and today's game, Leaf Buster, with its gorgeous music and fabulous, relaxing game are truly wonderful - I have bookmarked the site and when my own site Cybamart.com is complete and live I will add this site as a banner - invaluable and the best website I have come across!!! Thanks so much!!!!

This game is pretty limited, but what it does offer is pretty solid and functional. I believe this is actually one of the better games to be licensed to GAOTD recently. It may be limited, but it's fun and free. This to me is a welcome reprieve from the long list of lame titles GAOTD has gotten over the last week or so. Recommended.

Keeping tabs on the running list of superb game giveaway of the day.

Leafbuster available since 2004 for 14.95
http://leaf-buster.energames.qarchive.org/
links of to when it wasn't an Alive game, still looks like the same game though.

Advanced Gomoku 2.4 (wow, not v1.0) available since 2003 for 14.95
Superblocks v1.0 available since 2005 for 14.95
Ronin Solitaire v1.0 available since 2006 for 14.95
Bushido Soitaire v1.0 available since 2006 for 14.95
Fishing Trip v1.0 available since 2005 for 14.95
Tower constructor v1.0 available since 2005 for 14.95
Juicy puzzle v1.0 available since 2004 for 14.95
Castle of cards v1.0 available since 2005 for 14.95
Elite Mahjong v1.0 available since 2004 for 14.95

It seems that Doublegames and Alive really think that by using old shareware games, which no person with half a brain would pay the outrageous fee of 14.95 for, they will entice people to spend money on their site. Kind of makes me think of a shop that will let you have all the stale soda you want, free of charge.

Don't get me wrong. It isn't because a game has been around for a couple of years that it wouldn't be fun anymore. Nonetheless, if the basic gameplay has been done and done again, without really adding anything to it then the only thing the maker of it is trying to do is cashing in on those that are addicted to it.

If there are true freeware games around that really are innovative and fun and challenging then why can't a company be bothered to up the ante a bit.Perhaps because so many people here will accept any old tripe because it's free and can't see that the companies are the ones get stuff for free. They are getting advertisement, potential customers, site hits and, no doubt, extra sales on their site because of it. What do we get? Games that have to be given away because no one is buying them anymore.

Graphics have very basic (low resolution) quality in full screen[1], no wonder it may seem faster than Bejeweled on some systems, like laura sierra (comment #1) noticed.

Game and gameplay is OK, though. Fortunately the music can be turned off. So, all in all; if you like these kind of games it's well worth the download (and say thanks to GAOTD when you enjoy it ;-).

[1] The graphics were a turn-off for me. So, I uninstalled it. But, that doesn't say very much about the overall quality of the game.

Another winner GOTD! Thanks to you and Alive Games for making it available to us. #13- Exploro hit the nail on the head with his/her comment that the good folks at Alive would be speaking better English than we would be at speaking their language- how true! It gave me a good laugh, and should serve as a reminder to those snickering detractors...lighten up! It's all about the game, not the English.

Comment #10, Peter. Although it does say:

"Free Download Version of Leaf Buster Game
Click the link below to download PC version of the game. When asked whether to open or save the file, click 'Open' button and follow the instructions.

Get version of Leaf Buster (Download size: 5.5 Mb)"

it is actually only the demo version. I downloaded it and tried it. :)

This looks like a fairly boring game to start with, much like yesterdays, but don't let this deceive you as it's quite a good puzzle game, with unlimited playability.

The options menu is standard; that is, it has the usual toggles nd sliders for changing the sound and music volume as well as windowed mode to full screen.

The game is mouse control only, apart from when you add your name to the high score list.

The help menu explains the game succinctly, but may be hard to read for those with sight impairment and possibly those with certain types of color blindness due to the color of the back ground and text. The various stages (ie 1 to 5) may have been clearer if they had been separated by at least a single blank line, however this may have meant including a second page of instructions.

Unlike DoubleGames, to toggle between windowed mode, which is the default setting and full screen mode you have to go to the main menu, which can be accessed at all times throughout the game from the left hand pane; however to do this you will have to end the game you are playing and start afresh. there is no save ability with this game. I wouldn't say this is a bad feature though because it makes the game appeal to those who like a quick game occasionally, as opposed to those who like to play a game over a long period. You cannot set up user accounts either, however bearing in mind there is no save facility, this isn't needed.

The game, {although loosely based on the collapse theme}, has a different way of playing, which will certainly require some strategy as well as luck to be able to attain a high score. There seems to be no end of boards, so technically the only winner is the one with the best score. (ob)

The odds and even levels have a slightly different way of playing that adds some variability in the game. These differences are explained from the help page which can be accessed any time during game play :)

To the right of the gaming field are the leaves you use to attempt cancelling out as many like colored leaves within the playing area. By right clicking on these you can remove them, thus changing the trajectory of the leaves above them, however using this function (a maximum of 12 times during each level {or possibly game...not sure}) will reduce the number of steps you have left remaining before the end of that game, so use this facility sparingly otherwise you'll be starting from the beginning again. :(

All in all I’d say a worthwhile time waster which I will be keeping. Each level is generated randomly, so, even if you lose and have to start again, the first level is never the same, thus supporting my opening statement (not including the reply to the comment by Peter, that this game has unlimited playability.

The budding, or trained mathematician could easily work out the odds of this happening taking into account the number of variables present in the game:
i.e.
2 or 3 colors (depending upon whether it’s an odd or even level), 11 columns (fixed), and a range of leaf numbers that varies between around 70 to 90 leaves.

#10, the term "free download version" does not necessarily mean free software, just that it is free to download. Actually, if the intent was to offer free software, there would be better ways to say that, such as "try our great free software." This kind of reminds me of insurance commercials on television in America where the announcer offers "free rate quotes." Oh, so you are going to tell me, for free, how much money I can give you?!? Oooo, bonus... not. Or, looked at from another angle, I might have to pay you to tell me how much I might have to pay you? Huh? I am still looking for the added value to the customer in that one!

Many of the software developers and visitors to this site are not native English speaking folks so I am sure there was no intent to mislead here. As in most cases, these nice folks speak my language much better than I speak theres.

Thanks GAoD and software developers for some great code! Cheers!

Download & installation were smooth. Gameplay was flawless, and appeal for the whole family. No apparent errors or hidden files. There is a lack of choice on where to place the leaves, but otherwise it's a cute little game with nature sounds and relaxing music. We give the program 9 of 10. As always thanks GGoTD and partners.

You folks are wonderful. I cannot afford to subscribe to the internet and television both so the internet is my choice as it offers so much more. Fixed income folks such as myself are very grateful for the free software you provide that we would otherwise be unable to afford. I have enjoyed many demos and wished I could purchase the full version but budget dictates otherwise. Thank you for all your gifts. They are greatly appreciated. I have a "Happy Birthday Smile" every day. "Big Grin Goes Here". :-)I forgot to mention, my spyware/adware programs have found absolutely none of those products. If GAOTD says there isn't any... believe it... it's true.

After the great AdvancedGomoku is this concept far from original. There are so many games you must 3 same coloured things get away. Why never 4 or more same coloured things? So in a scale from 0-10 I give the program 3 points.
