Remember to "cat filename.ext" every file you come across, they might contain new links to scan (and get money)... remember to stick to the objective and not go too astray, especially in the later levels when money is a big issue. This game was fun, not too hard to beat (the maze one had me stumped for an hour or so). Upgrade when you have cash to spare (3GHz total CPU and Class 2 Firewall can break 1024 bit encryption and 32 character passwords without any bounces) ;)

im at level 9, or 10...the one with 16 servers maze and had to find 5 from dem...ive hacked into those 5 servers but last task dont seem to be completed..and its difficult like hell.

Problems

level 1
-no explicit mention of the need to find and hack terminal-83
this means that although one may have done everything that is mentioned in the mission objectives and uploaded the right files...one isn't accepted as finishing unless one finds and hack the terminal-83

In the end I just started looking for a walkthru...which only exists for the tutorial level and the first level
I however figured it out by looking at the folder names in the game folder.

level 2
-glaring spelling mistakes in mission briefing
-descriptions of mission objectives 5 and 6 are the same
it is clear from the 'files' one finds what the idea is but still ... not good practice
-although the score,level of trace,money, upgrades get inherited from the previous level the progress one has done isn't. This means that time and time again one has to decrypt, crack, connect to some of the same locations over and over again. BUT locations of the previous mission may or may not be there to connect to, all depending if the creator found it necessary for the 'storyline' or not. Hardly realistic.

level 3

At the first glance the game looks promising but the storyline needs work, the interface needs work, the handling of input needs work, the visuals need work, the spelling needs work, the briefings need work, the programming needs serious work.

If it was possible to simulate a cursor realistically on a C-64 in '84, or on an Amiga in '89 (even while truly multi-tasking) then why is it so unrealistic in a game running on a machine with 1GB of Ram at a speed of 2Ghz?

For those that missed the game....don't fret about it...be glad you didn't waste your time on something that was done better 10 years ago.
To even think about asking for money for this is insulting. This is clearly made by someone who wanted to make something similar as the famous Uplink game but who doesn't have the skill for making something that even looks like a cheap looking knock-off and then expects to be paid for it.

A much easier trainer is just to type "xmoney" during the game, that will grant you 10.000$ and reset your score to 0. (There are other cheats starting with x (i found it by accident by autocompleating "x"))

By the has anyone the level named End, I'm really stuck, and cant seem to get any further! (please help).

Here's sort of a trainer mode.
1.Open a windows explorer window (My computer,e tc)
2,Play the game till you pass level 1. The system will save your profile in nickname.profile in C:\Program Files\Hacker Evolution\he-savegames. (substitute the actual nickname you used for the profile name)
3. exit the level
4. Click on Load or Delete Profile. you should see your saved game.
5. Press Alt-Tab to switch out of the game and into the windows explorer window.
6.Open the nickname.profile file with notepad
7. Edit your money to any figure you want (150,00 :-)). It should be the 11th (eleventh) line from the top)
8. Save the file
9. Press Alt Tab to go back to your game. Your nickname.profile should still be there.
10. Click your nickname profile and continue the game with so much money to upgrade CPU, firewall, modems, killtrace.
11. remember this is just a trainer :-)

Another tip:

Here is an easy way to determine how many "bounces" (intermediate systems) you need to go through in order not to be traced:

PW Chars Bounces Bits Seconds
---------- --------- ------ -------
4 0 128 12
8 1 256 24
12 2 384 36
16 3 512 48

So for example, if you need to crack a 4 character password, you need 0 bounces (no intermediate systems). If you want to decrypt a 512-bit encryption, then you need 3 bounces, etc.

You can continue this table yourself, just keep incrementing the bounces by one, the PW chars by 4 and the bits by 128. The seconds increment by 12.

Note that upgrades may change these, for instance the Firewall doubles the amount of time you have to crack/decrypt for every level of upgrade, so after the first upgrade, to crack a 8 character password you would need 0 bounces, a 16 character PW would need 1 bounce.

Also, every time you do one of the things below, your trace level automatically increases, here is a chart of how much it increases:

crack 15%
decrypt 5%
scan 1%
exec 1%
login 1%

Note that if you do scan multiple times on the same system, it will add 1% each time, so it is better to left click on it on the map (after the initial scan), as this does not increase your trace level.

If you get fully traced, then the trace level goes up by 50% (ouch!) so it is best not to let this happen if possible.

If you know that you don't have enough bounces to crack/decrypt without being traced, then it is best to remove all bounces and just let yourself be traced while using 0 bounces, this way you don't waste any bounces (max 3 per system) yet you still will successfully decrypt/crack the system. Getting traced while you are using bounces (because you did not use/have enough bounces to remain untraced) is just a waste.

However if your trace level is >= 35% (crack) or >= 45% (decrypt), and you have no more money to buy killtrace, then you are out of luck (crack will add 15% + 50%, and decrypt 5% + 50%).

Note that there are also some saved game files in the he-developer/he-savegames.zip file, you can just unzip these in to the he-savegames folder and use them to start at any level with a set amount of money and trace value. I am not sure if it is possible to win the level when starting from one of these save files, but I would assume so.

Great game! Just as fun as the one from Stard*ck I know some people find these games repeditive, and there are a few variations of it, but I still like it and they did a wonderful job on this one! BRAVO!

download was fine, but i am unable to play.
when i start the game, it asks for the code. i enter "give..." and it says successfully activated. then the box reappears and tells me to active. hey, i just did it.
any idea?

Hey guys, if you get stuck on money, you can edit the money/trace values REALLY easily in tsearch. REALLY REALLY easily. No autohack or whatnot. Here's how to do it:

In tsearch, search your current money. It's 4 bytes. Use your money (as in killtrace) and search your money again. One result. Change it to whatever money you want. Do the exact thing with trace level. Though, it really kills the game to do this excessively, it's great to save yourself from starting over.

This game is great! Up to level 9, after playing it for hours on end. Not one glitch. Great GGAOTD. This is the first game that I have gotten from GGAOTD. Been real choosy. I really like games that have some resemblance to realism. Dont like arcade stuff at all. Loved a couple of the screensavers too, expecially the old clock.

Looks good. It downloaded and installed easily even on Vista. I always read about 20 comments FIRST before I go to download so I know if there are quirks. I don't have to be first so easy is good. I spend enough time working out other people's computer problems so I don't need more on my computers.

As with every GGotD, if you don't read the readme.txt, you WILL have problems. You can't assume that you always do the activate first. A quick glance into the readme saves much frustration!

I'll say it again, read some comments before you download and make sure you do read the readme.txt and you'll have very few issues unless your computer is already messed up. :-)

DO NOT play this game. Being a real hacker, you have only one chance. In the game, you have infinite chance. Without enough information to hack in real life, I am almost certain that you will get caught.
The final reason why not play this game:

This game can kill more time than you think!

Downloaded fine, unzipped and activated fine. I tried to run it and it gives me an error. Just my luck it seems. Anyone have any idea what to do to fix it? I'm going to try uninstalling and reinstalling it but any other ideas are welcome.

I downloaded, installed, activated and registered smoothly, but the game freezed right from the beginnining. There's no go, even no mouse pointer or right click. I tried to exit the game by pressing Esc button but there's nothing happen, nothing. Could someone tell me why and how to fix it? Thank you in advance.

This game made me poot. it just slipped out in front of company. I couldnt have been a quiet one that didn't smell....It was really warm coming out and it made a squeaky kind of noise and OMG did it Stink! They were all laughing and gaging at my cruel bodily functions. After about 15 times of me asking them to stop....I bent over to let another one loose and little did i know that i was going to let out some runny bile. It was green and GROSS!! My dog did manage to get a lick in before i got washed up. Oh yeah, Loved the game.

Not as much fun as Uplink (mentioned earlier) but seems to be pretty decent. I've been having problems in the 3rd level because I can never find a money source, which leads me to my one complaint:

If you mess something up in an earlier level which makes it impossible to complete your current level (like coming in with too much trace level and no cash) you pretty much have to start over from the beginning. It would have been nice to have the option to go back to previous levels. Not a major problem in the earlier ones, but I can see this being very irritating after completing a number of levels.

In view of all the problems people are having downloading due to the size of the file it might no be a bad ide to post an md5 sum for the download. That way we can check if the download went well.
