Land of Runes:

In Brief:
Land of runes is a nice little puzzle time waster, with some different modes of play, awards and despite it's fifteen year age, it still looks reasonably decent on todays modern monitors.

The game was first given away on the 14th July 2019 where it received a positive 81% from 31 votes with 10 comments which you can see HERE. It was also given away on the 19th December 2020 where it received a positive 89% from 19 votes with 8 comments, which you can see HERE

You can see a few videos of game play HERE, HERE and HERE.

The Game:
Tonight, the natives are restless. In fact, they’re more than restless. They’re downright anxious. Who wouldn’t be when the ground begins shaking, the animals run for cover and the volcano on your happy little island starts spewing fire and smoke. It’s enough to spoil your usually tranquil lifestyle big time. And, that’s exactly what’s happened in the Land of Runes.

So, what’s a concerned native to do? You could snatch the nearest dugout and paddle like crazy. Or, you might take the more responsible route and save your butt, and everyone else’s, from being burned … literally.

The challenge in Land of Runes is to save your people by removing stacks of coloured runes from ancient memorials on your way to the volcano’s peak. How? By matching coloured chunks of stone, rotating altar bases to find the best match and tossing your blocks into the multi-coloured stacks. Sound simple? Well, for the most part it is.

In essence, Land of Runes is a combination block-sliding and match-three puzzler. Gameplay spans 80 levels with 19 tile-matching bonus levels sandwiched between. Standard levels, presented in an isometric 3D perspective (bonus levels appear in a top-down, 2D viewpoint), require you to slide runes inward from the lower left and lower right sides of the platform to create three-block and larger colour-coordinated combos, which then disappear. But, it’s not quite that effortless. You need to rotate the board to access its other two sides, continually spinning it as you look for the best combinations. And, you’re doing so against the clock (levels are timed, though you can switch to a timer-free mode if you wish).

Levels are comprised of various runes, including ordinary and unique. Destroying all unique runes completes a level. That means you don’t have to remove every stone to advance, just those with special markings. However, removing all the runes will increase your score, as will collecting any treasures placed adjacent to the game board (some may be partially hidden from view). If you plan wisely, your point total will benefit. But, should you not be happy with your score or if you missed a treasure, you can replay any level by selecting it from the game map screen.

Besides ordinary and unique runes, other special-purpose stones exist. For example, Triangle runes slide underneath other blocks, elevating them and turning into ordinary runes in the process. Two-Coloured runes can be matched by blocks of either colour and are changed into single-color runes on contact. Rocks are indestructible, Black runes assume the colour of any stones that collides with them and Multi-Runes can be combined with a rune of any color. Damaged runes and Dummies, meanwhile, are chaff removed with any stone.

Bonuses, collected by sliding runes into them, also play a part in the game. Golden Coins award extra points, Sundials add time to the clock, Bombs destroy nearby objects, Crushers eliminate all objects in a straight path, Earthquakes destroy all Damaged runes and Dummies, and Lightning destroys the tallest column on the board.

You earn trophies during play, as well. Pull off ten bonus chains in a row and receive the Golden Chain while the Amulet is awarded for destroying 1,000 runes and the Sundial for completing a level quickly. Score 1,000,000 points and you receive the Volcanic Crystal. A total of fifteen awards are possible.

In all, Land of Runes is a highly addictive game. It’s very hard to quit once started. Graphics and music are capably handled, a decent selection of rune types, bonuses and awards are incorporated in the package, and the game offers solid replay value.

But, it’s not tremor free. While Land of Runes installed fine, it wouldn’t run under Windows Vista without tweaking compatibility settings (choosing Windows 98/Windows Me allowed the game to run, but only with low-resolution graphics). Plus, when trying to adjust game settings (music, sound, graphics and screen resolution), the game continually locked and crashed, spitting out a “Critical Error” message in broken English.

There’s also an issue of questionable content during the game’s introduction, though it’s only viewed when a new game is begun. Not to be prudish, but the inclusion of hand-drawn, National Geographic-style artwork depicting bare butts and breasts seems out of place in a casual game intended for the whole family (as a cartoon, it would receive an “R” rating).

Still, Land of Runes offers a compelling and enjoyable game experience, though one marred by Vista compatibility issues and some racy imagery. It’s your choice whether that’s acceptable or not.

I am not sure why my comment was deleted but I just wanted to say that this game is worth keeping today. Its a different take on the Match 3 Games and there is also a twist to how you can achieve completion of a level. Using the different camera rotation angles.

Perhaps the website had a glitch that made my comment go away from this morning?

I have this from a previous giveaway and though I am not a big fan of Match3 games, I've enjoyed playing this. It plays differently with the 3-D blocks and I like that much more than a flat M3 board. You are following a map and must clear the board at each impasse to move on. Of course, the further you go the more difficult and also the more bonuses. There is both a relaxed and timed mode. I've played in timed and it is generous and doesn't get you frenzied. Everything is pretty much covered above in Whiterabbit-uk's post. As far as compatibility. I have Win10HomeX64 with dedicated graphics and it works fine.

Have no fear. This will install perfectly on Windows 10. No need for compatibility adjustments. I maxed out the game resolution and had no problem.

This one is a keeper.

Dear Wabbit,

I hope you and the family are feeling better. My CT Scan came up with nothing so now he's looking to check my lungs etc.

I found this in my Steam feed. I don't have the money for all 3 but I am getting the "Dashboard" one for sure. It seems Pippala Games is moving to another country and taking down their games.

"We would like to announce that, our games will be taken down from the Steam store on 28-Jul-2022 due to us moving to another country soon.
Although you can no longer purchase our games, our store page will remain accessible on Steam."

Here's all the games.

Here's MY 1980's DASHBOARD and it's on YOUR WL too.

Take care my furry friend...

Thanks for the heads up Delenn. Feeling much better now, but still weak. Glad to hear the scan was clear. good luck with the lights check (they call lungs 'lights' when attached to the bronchus and thorax in pathology). :)

So..once they get settled in their new country, the games will be available. So their games are NOT really going away.

Will they become available again after you have moved¿ Why are they getting retired in the first place, I don't get it.
Hi Zephir, thank you for your enquiry.
They should be available again once everything is settled.

The reason for us to stop selling our games is because our exisitng developer information will no longer be relevant after we moved to another country.

Until we have completed our relocation, and new developer information based on our new location can be provided to Steam, we have to retire these games.

I hope you understand the complications involved as we are bound to set rules and regulations.

Thank you again for your support to our games!
Downloaded and ran on windows 11 with no problem. I found it fun to play you have to match 3 runes and clear the board to progress through the levels. There is a timed and a relaxed mode. I am definitely going to keep this game.

Thanks, ros! Always good for me to know about relaxed mode. I got it just in time.

Using Win 10, I had to start it from the engine.exe call. Otherwise, it hung up and wouldn't run right.
