Just a follow-up comment,
#5, extracting that directory is dangerous(*cough* game probably wont function *cough*).
Its not the full version as you put it but where all the scripts and data are placed. The torque game engine(what this was built on) can access .zips like normal folders, so it acts as a way of lowering overall game size(all the textures, models, ect. are in there).
I would suggest not extracting it, as it might have undesired effects, but if you must for whatever reason, create a "game" folder in your kingmania folder and extract it there.

I lov it....it reminds me of age of empire.

Argh!! I wish I hadn't bothered reading the comments on that Jupiter screen saver!!! I am now just a few minutes late and missed this! I've been waiting a whole week.. haha... Well, it's 3pm over here so I forgot that it's US time for the giveaway...

Oh, that's it! #45, that's the same error message I get. I have Vista on my laptop, could that be the problem? Or is this a video card error?
Save | Cancel
Wouldn't install for me. Nothing in either the games or program file folders. Instead, it just created a folder on my desktop. The .exe file in that only brought up an error message.

I can't get it to play on my laptop - tells me "hardware failed to switch to required setting" or something like that.
It runs on my desktop though and I really like the game except my mouse is slow and if I don't click in Just the right place when attacking then I have to reclick the monster/fireball and reclick on the building (which takes forever because the mouse runs so slow).
I'll continue to play and try to get as far as I can go but I'm finding the "easy" levels to be pretty difficult.

To those with Vista and video drivers that do not permit screen mode changes by this game...
A solution could be to switch the game into windowed mode rather than fullscreen mode.
To do this you need to edit the file "prefs.cs" in the folder
Kingmania\game\clent\
using NotePad.
Look for the line:
$pref::Video::fullScreen = "1";
and change it to:
$pref::Video::fullScreen = "0";
That *should* remove the need for the program to do any mode change before the game starts.
No warranties expressed or implied but it might help :-)

#20 - Maybe 'DirectX 10' is the problem(it isn't 'officially' supported on XP)..

The game isn't too complicated, but it is addicting - and surprisingly a lot of fun. It does take some measure of strategy to do well - later it takes a good deal of strategy and good management of your resources (and time) to know when to attack/expand and when not to. The game's "stages" seem to progress nicely (I've played through a dozen or so levels so far) in terms of the difficulty you face as you go on. The graphics are not state-of-the-art or Earth-shattering by any means, but they are actually really good (especially considering the relatively low resources needed to run the game comfortably). The game's settings options are very well implemented allowing me to play in windowed mode if I had chosen and in full screen mode at my laptop's native 1280x800 resolution (and the 16 or 32 bit graphic setting option was a delightfully welcome sight).
All in all I'd say this is a must try game. Many may not like it, but it's certainly worth the time to try out. Even if you only play it once in a while it can likely find its way to being one of those "never gonna give up entirely" kind of "play around to kill 15 minutes" games.

Great game, but lags too much to be able to be competitive or win after level 2.
XP Pro SP2, DX9.0c, ATI9600 video card w/128MB. Card capable of OpenGL, just not with this game.

I love the fact that the game was made on Torque Game Engine. I own a copy of it myself.
The engine is great for making these kinds of games. It also makes it easier to mod the game.
Thank you GAOTD!

EXCELLENT game. Played it for days when I first got it. Quite popular among casual gamers/gaming websites. Can't wait to try the online options.
Thanks GAOTD.

An okay game that I found crashes when it gets busy, so already removed. It was a bit fiddly to control due to the upgrade menu and population status icons obscuring things I wanted to select, which generated a lot of unnecessary frustration.

...The Advanced version is only a free bonus for standard Kingmania owners.
Does that mean we GAOTD members don't get the advanced version?

Reminds me of a silly version of command and conquer. Its very addictive. Installed and runs fine on windows xp home addition. no problm with reboots or anyting did not need to extract that extra zip file I do wish though I knew how to play it online. Thanks for the fun game though :)

Thanks for today's game - the dsl download/setup took under 6 minutes on my Windows XP system, including no problems with the one-click to unzip, created my own 'desktop short-cut' and was ready to play.
Since this is a new type of game for me, so all I can I can say is that it will take me some time to learn the controls, movements of people, attacking, ect ... the 'training' was helpful to begin.

I actualy could play the game.
Didn't like it much: the gameplay is very repetetive.
Graphics are OK, but can;t hide the fact the game isn't very strategic.
So I'd rate it: mediocre

I like it! It's a little like "Master of Defense" and A"rchmage" on steroids. Downloaded and installed perfect on my Vista Home Premium. As an FYI if not already mentioned, to create a game icon, go to the default game location, (C;\games\kingmania) and right click on Kingmania.exe. Choose send to, and then Desktop. It will create a ashortcut icon on your desktop to play the game. Thumbs up as a great time waster.

When I try to start the game I get "hardware failed to switch to the specified mode". Has anybody an idea how to fix that?

This is another great game. Ignore comment # 5. I am not sure what this person's issues were but the game installs and plays with no problems on my XP system. You won't need to do anything more than extract the game to a folder of your choice. That's right. There is no install routine. Just unzip and play. To answer # 26 question I would think once the game is extracted it can be freely copied to anyplace one desires. Be it a cd or a memory stick. I also don't understand comment # 20 problems. My computer did not reboot at all. The game started and played. Thank you so much to the GGAOTD team for yet another great addition to my game library. Thank you also to the publisher 300AD. Your games are very much appreciated here.

#37..I don't think so..Just over 110 people voted.

Try Wolfenstein,much better.
Thanks anyway GAOTD.

I don't generally comment, since my interests at the age of 59 aren't necessarily the same as the interests of the "mainstream user" of this site, but #12's arrogance has finally inspired me. Stephen spends many hours testing and reviewing the offerings here, and I for one appreciate his comments, regardless of whether he considers them to be a "real review" or not. I suspect many of the other regular visitors here feel the same way. If you aren't one of the folks who do, then simply scroll farther down and shut up. There is absolutely no reason to be nasty to him simply because he happens to have a life aside from his free service to us and occasionally likes to attend to it.

Still cant figure out how to play multiplayer, game just gets stuck when I try picking level one or two....

Gameplay is frustratingly unrewarding on my system... I conquor an area and accrue tens of thousands of food units and thousands of gold pieces and soldiers and farmers and monsters etc only to find myself back at minimal food and gold and army/worker compliment when I move on to next area. What is the point in progressing when the game forgets your wealth form previous stage!
In multiplayer there apears to be no active master server list available so unless people wish to manually host games and publish their IP in places like this it is of little practical use to anyone!
I tried the Advanced version on this laptop which has pixel shader 3.0 support and it crashed and burned on all compatability settings available.
B for effort, F for achievment

A very clever move of the developers: by giving away their game for 1 day they suddenly have over...3000?5000? new players for the multiplayer mode.

I tried to install it on my Vista laptop and it installed fine. However, when I tried to run the game it said "Hardware can not switch to specified mode." First, I'm totally bummed, but I will try to install on my XP desktop. Second, does anyone know what that means? Maybe it's something I can fix? Thx.

#28, #4 - Maybe I have too much memory or wrong graphics card. It won't run on my system - Win XP Pro / SP3, Pentium 4 3GHz, 2GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT/GTO. Just for the heck of it, tried to install and run it on my wife's computer in the kitchen - no problem, it runs on her system. She has Win XP Pro / SP2, Pentium 4 2GHz, 512MB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce MX 420.

Great game. I wish there was a "health meter" so you could see the health of the target you are attacking and know how well the battle is going, but aside from that, it's a fun game. Installed and ran flawlessly; no need to unpack game.zip to get it working.
BTW, when the game installs, it extracts to wherever you tell it; in my case, I simply specified C:\games and it installed to C:\games\kingmania. It looks like if you have run the WinRAR extractor before (with another game or software), the extraction location will default to wherever it extracted previously. That's why some people must be seeing "C:\games" and others are seeing "C:\Program Files".

Nice little game but unplayable due to lag issues (entirely related to my very slow graphics card). I suspect this would be lots of fun on a newer and more capable system.

wow... this game looks like it has... DEPTH! i never knew this site knew such games EXISTED!

#4 - It won't start on my system either. Installs fine, ends up in C:\Games\Kingmania. Click on kingmania.exe, get hourglass for about 1 second and then nothing happens.

I started up a new topic on the forum of my game website to post when I see good games being offered on GGOTD.

Has anyone tried burning this game to CD for backup? This type of game is not necessarily my cup of tea (at least not right now) but I might want to try it at a later date. I'd rather not install it and leave it on my computer right now, but I be willing to download, unzip, and burn to CD and put away for later. I've done this with a few other GGOTD games. (I've only had one or two so far that wouldn't run from CD)

After doing the tutorial I tried getting online with the game's server, that didnt work, and after that I couldnt even get out of the game, not even with ctrl/alt/delete, had to reboot, not impressed so far....

Any idea's gratefully received...
I downloaded the game and installed it. I followed instructions by number 5 - (James). Created a shortcut for the desktop. Clicked on the shortcut...Uh?! My PC rebooted. Uninstalled game, reinstalled game clicked on 'Kingmania. exe' System Rebooted, yet again.
WinXP Home - 1,250mb ram - 2x40 gig HD's - NVIDIA GeForce MMX/400 graphics card - Soundblaster Creative Audigy Platinum sound card - Microsoft DirectX10 - Service Pack's 1 & 2 - Microsoft .NET Framework's 1.1 - 2.0 - 3.0 - Plus all the latest patches and updates. I haven't git a clue as to why this should happen? One thing though, the reboot was faster than ever experienced before. I'm thinking of keeping it just for rebooting.
