The Game:
More than a decade ago, the Kingdom of Aurelia was seized by a vicious tyrant. Princess Aurora hid from his troops and eventually managed to overthrow the warlord, restoring the king to his throne and peace to the land. You’d think the story would be left to a happily ever after at this point, but no, evil isn’t done with this world. Not yet. A mysterious man approaches the Princess and offers to read her palm. Instead, he slashes her hand and curses her with a mysterious poison, the cure for which can only be found beyond the forest. As her best friend, it’s your job to venture forth and save her life, before it’s too late.

Kingdom of Aurelia: Mystery of the Poisoned Dagger is a casual adventure loaded with mini-games and sprinkled with the lightest touch of hidden object scenes. The story takes place in the most charming of worlds that fuses fantasy with steampunk, throwing things like mechanical insects at you all while chatting about spells and wizards. You’ll also get a device that can read people’s minds and toy around with a robot companion, both of which change the way you’ll look at puzzles in the game.
Mystery of the Poisoned Dagger is more concerned with mini-games than hidden object scenes. You’ll spend a great deal of time wandering between sections picking up items to store in your inventory, some of which can be interacted with by clicking on the plus sign. As soon as you put an item where it belongs, a mini-game will pop up. Most of these stick to simple gimmicks like matching symbols or lining up tiles, things most people will recognize from other hidden object games. Occasionally, though, Poisoned Dagger throws something wild and amazing your way, just to make sure you’re paying attention.

When a hidden object scene does arrive, it won’t take you long to complete. Each one displays a collection of silhouettes at the bottom of the screen. Find each item (or pieces of an item) in turn, often using them on the screen to unlock and open the way for new objects. Once you collect everything you’ll get an important piece of a puzzle and be sent on your way. Easy!

Kingdom of Aurelia has more of a light-hearted and adventurous tone than most hidden object adventures. The situation is tense, of course, since you’re on a mission to rescue the princess, but because you play as a curious young boy crawling through hidden passages and investigating magical forests, nothing seems dire or hopeless, just mischievous. Paired with the lovely graphics and unique setting, this change of atmosphere sets Poisoned Dagger on the top shelf of hidden object games. Once you start playing, you’ll be drawn in immediately.

Conclusion:
The game has unique multi-use items that may change the way you think about puzzles; with excellent hand drawn scenery with a light-hearted setting that draws you in from the start. Well worth downloading. I purchased this one on Steam HERE.

Whiterabbit-uk,

Other Free Games:
For other free games, please check Delenn's threads over in the giveaway forums HERE (non-Steam games) and HERE (Steam games) for the latest freebies; it's kept up to date frequently, whenever a free game becomes available, (thanks for keeping this up to date Delenn, very much appreciated).

Also, for the latest Steam sales check THIS Steam database site out. You can list the games in 'price' & 'percentage off' by clicking the headers. If you link SteamDB (the Steam database) with your Steam account, all games that you already have will be highlighted in green and those in blue are on your wish list. When there are Steam games being given away, you'll see the percentage off as 100%. It's worth checking this regularly to make sure you don't miss the best deals and freebies. Delenn usually posts links to all free games within several hours of them going live, so check her links at the top of this comment as well.
Don't forget to check Indie Gala's freebie section HERE, then click on the Showcase header, selecting freebies from the drop down menu; the most recent additions include:

1) ... The Last Enchantress: Revival, (choice-based fantasy game, contains adult themes and not suitable for children)

2) ... Copperbell (Returning freebie - hand drawn adventure game)

3) ... Avani: The Primal Land (Explore, gather, learn, craft and build in the world of Avani: The Primal Land. Fight, hunt and tame wild animals. Animals have their own genetics and no animal is like the other. The interactive taming process allows making a real bond with each tame. Avani offers a unique crafting system combined with a huge skill tree and an intuitive building system mixed with traditional survival game elements)

4) ... Cov Shooter (Try to survive as many waves as possible, upgrade your stats and weapons to do that)

5) ... WTC : Relentless Protagonist [Sxs}, (a short mostly KINETIC comedy/drama visual novel)

6) ... Out of Puberty: Chapter 1 (graphic novel, contains adult themes and not suitable for children)

7) ... Neon Invasion Earth, (space invaders)

8) ... WTC : Recruitment Day (a short mostly KINETIC comedy/drama visual novel)

9) ... Pixel Puzzles 2: Paintings ( jigsaw puzzle)

10) ... Welcome To... Chichester OVN 3 : The Mysterious Affair At The Violet Hotel (Interactive novel)

11) ... Hamsterdam (NEW - classic brawler mechanics meet rhythm and precision)

We have been given over 340 games since I started to check the freebie section several years ago. But around 60% of those are no longer available free. The following recent freebies have now been removed from the free library: Leisure Suit Larry 2 Looking For Love (In Several Wrong Places), Leisure Suit Larry 1 - In the Land of the Lounge Lizards , Figment, Pixel Puzzles 2: Space, Revolution Ace, Six Sides of the World, Byte Family, Alone on Mars, Garfield Kart, Nostradamus the Last Prophecy, Snowball, Pixel Puzzles 2: Christmas , Die Young (Full version), Distortions, Dino Run DX, Cheap Golf, Kill Em All, Dead Hungry Diner, and Contract with the Devil. If you claimed those while they were still available you can access them via your Indie Gala account under the showcase section. Each page from your free list can take 30 or so seconds to move to the next page; so, if like me you've added most of the free games over the last several years, it can take almost half an hour to get to the last page. I have just over 340 games in my free section. All remaining freebies can be found in the showcase section (113 games are still available). Not all games that go into the showcase remain free and are removed after a short period (e.g. the recent adventure puzzler Figment that costs almost £15 on Steam); so, you should grab them as soon as you can. All titles are DRM free.

The latest Epic Game is Cris Tales - (an indie love letter to classic JRPGs with a new perspective).

If you missed last weeks freebie 'Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons' it is also included in the latest Humble Choice bundle as a Steam key - see below for the Humble Choice details). From Thursday the 1st March at 4pm UK/11am Eastern we will be getting
The best Indie Bundles sites that have been operating from around 2011 are the Humble Bundle and Indie Gala sites (though the latter isn't as good as it used to be) where you'll sometimes find decent bundles with over 90% off the usual price of the games included in the bundles. The Humble site is in my opinion the best; though a more recent addition that is worth checking out called Fanatical games looks to be a serious contender for that title as they have some very good bundles. You can find Fanatical games (that used to be called Bundle Stars) HERE.

I've restarted a project I originally started back in 2008 that used to be called Good Games to Grab, where I posted free games over in the forums on a daily basis. I won't be posting them daily this time; only as and when I have time and the inclination. You can find the new forum section entitled 'Free Game Project' HERE. So far, I've posted eight excellent PC games, plus one android game as well as suggested or linked to others similar to the ones posted e.g.

Hidden & Dangerous Deluxe (a squad based solo shooter). Battlegroup 44 (a free-standing mod for Battlefield 2 that is a follow up to the original Battlefield 1942). Slam Tilt (an excellent pinball game with four tables). 3-D Ultra Pinball: Creep Night, (one of my all-time favourite pinball games from the mid 90's). Breakquest (one of my all-time top ten 2D breakouts). Messy Paths (an android game). Castlevania The Lecarde Chronicles (fan made free standing Castelvania game). Conflict Vietnam (third person squad-based shooter). Cabela's Big Game Hunter 2006 Trophy Season (a linear hunting game). Just added Open TTD (Transport Tycoon Deluxe). I'll be adding more over the coming months.

Black And White Apocalypse that was given away some weeks ago by the developer Hammergames is always free and can also be downloaded as a colour version. The community member Space pointed this out at the time. You can find both versions over on itch.io via the following links Black & White version, and Coloured version. :)

You can also find 'all nine' of the developers' games (for free) HERE. Some of them look like they are worth investigating. :)

The next Humble Choice bundle goes live tomorrow, so this is your last chance to grab the latest bundle; it includes eight games plus one DLC pack; i.e. Borderlands 3 with the director's cut DLC included, Black Book, Per Aspera, Just Die Already, Before We leave, Paradise Lost, Everhood and Calico. For original Humble Bundle subscribers, the cost is $12/£8.99 with other benefits such as access to a lot of indie titles for free while subscribed and a percentage off other purchases from the Humble store. This increases the longer you keep subscribed up to a year with 20% off all none bundle purchases. (1 month sub' gives 10% off, 3 months sub' gives 15% off and six months sub 'gives 17% off). The next Humble Choice bundle goes live Tuesday 1st March 22.

The latest Humble Bundles include Overwhelmingly Positive Gems (all games get a 95% or more positive rating and include seven games i.e. Shadow Man Remastered, Clone Drone in the Danger Zone, Bang-On Balls: Chronicles, Kathy Rain: Director's Cut, HUNTDOWN, There Is No Game : Wrong Dimension & Finding Paradise. There's also a VR bundle called VR Discovery Bundle ( that includes Synth Riders, Blaston, Cook-Out, Panoptic, Trover Saves the Universe, Red Matter and Tower Tag + Soundtrack). Both bundles end on the 11th March 22. There's also Sid Meier's Ultimate Collection that includes Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI, Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI: Gathering Storm
DLC, Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI: Rise and Fall
DLC, Sid Meier’s Civilization VI - Vikings Scenario Pack
DLC, Sid Meier’s Civilization VI - Poland Civilization & Scenario Pack
DLC, Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI - Australia Civilization & Scenario Pack
DLC, Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI - Persia and Macedon Civilization & Scenario Pack
DLC, Sid Meier’s Civilization VI - Nubia Civilization & Scenario Pack
DLC, Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI - Khmer & Indonesia Double Civilization & Scenario Pack
DLC, Coupon for $15 New Frontier Pass, Sid Meier’s Civilization®: Beyond Earth™ - The Collection, Sid Meier’s Civilization V: The Complete Edition, Sid Meier's Pirates!, Sid Meier's Civilization® IV: The Complete Edition, Sid Meier's Civilization® III: Complete, Sid Meier's Starships, Sid Meier's Railroads!, Sid Meier’s Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies, Sid Meier’s Ace Patrol, Sid Meier's Colonization (Classic), Sid Meier's Covert Action (Classic) that ends on the 9th March 22.

If you are a removed game collector Gods Remastered a classic platformer from the early 90's is being removed from Steam on the 27th March. You can swap between the original and the remastered version. You'll find the Steam page HERE

If you have Amazon Prime, the free February games are now available. You can get Stellaris on GOG for free. Visit Prime Gaming for details.

Stay safe everyone.

To the developers of ToomkyGames: Still enjoying the game. Positively surprised that it is offered in so many different languages. Playing the German version and with German mother tongue, however, there are some small translation mistakes:

So "stamp" means "Stempel" in this regard (not "Briefmarke"). And "auxiliaries" is not "Gepäck". Maybe this helps.

Thanks anyway for this beautiful game.

Would've liked this but crashed every time it was around 10% loaded on the bar, and I couldn't get the goddamn thing to close. Had to restart the entire machine each time, which killed my browser's ability to restore all my tabs. This was a complete shit experience this time.

Thanks. Good Windows 11 Pro x64. Did take bit longer to d/l & install than usual. Runs cleanly, good graphics & story flow. Nice usual several options.
In game hints, and can play at various levels, defaults to easiest Casual.
Going to take while to run through but no rush. Thanks.

I enjoyed this game very much. It downloaded and installed perfectly, and it's neither too difficult nor too easy. The engineer's face was familiar to me from another similar steam punk game. I really liked having a new game that I'd never seen before. Thanks so much, White Rabbit and GAoTD.

With these Hidden Objects games what I look for as a priority to determine whether or not I will try out a game is how dark the scenes are. I do not want to fool around with the way I have my monitor adjusted to try to illuminate the darker areas where items simply are not visible. It is usually a matter of "doom and gloom" graphics, which is about the story line. Games with uplifting lovely scenes of nature would be refreshing for change.

m.g. , NOT suggesting you rush out & buy a new monitor, but if/when you do replace it, some [many?] gaming monitors have different profiles you can select. That way you could have one brighter, & one the way you like it otherwise, switching between the two with a push of the switch.

This is a nice game worth to keep.
It crashed on first try, but started it over and it works fine now on win 11, 64b.
Nice graphic and makes you "think"

so far, really enjoying this! installed and running fine on Win 10. the graphics are a step up, the sound is adjustable (big plus), and I like that the puzzles require a bit of thought and not just "find the objects that're placed haphazardly around the scene." hoping for some slightly more challenging puzzles but overall, so far, so well-worth installing! thanx, gotd and whiterabbit.

Just loved this game! Kingdom of Aurelia: Mystery of the Poisoned Dagger is the kind of game that makes you *think*. This is much better than plain old HOGs where you just find hidden objects.

Also, so far (I've just completed 1 level), in the HOG screens of this game, the items aren't just dumped into the screen. Instead, they look like they're all part of the screen, which makes it more natural.

Thank you Toomky Games and Game Giveaway of the Day!

This seems a good game. It works on windows 11 without any problems. It has several levels of difficulty. I have only tried the tutorial but I am defiantly going to play it more. Worth trying.

Have you tried looking into compatibility mode?

Having the same problem.
Where do I find "Compatibility Mode???"

Glenn Norman, Right-click the game.exe file in the game install folder and pick 'troubleshoot compatibility'.

Reply   |   Comment by jb  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

Glenn Norman,

Hi Glenn,

Sorry, meant to answer this earlier, but got distracted.

You can right click on either the games executable (.exe) or the games shortcut (which links to the games executable). When you right click you'll see a drop down menu; select 'Properties' This opens a properties window. Click on the tab labelled 'Compatibility'. (please see image below):
Kingdom-of-Aurelia
There are several options that you can
select from this tab (by marking the check boxes or clicking on specific buttons), for example Run compatibility troubleshooter, 'Change DPI settings or Run this program in compatibility mode for: {you have to check the box first then you can access a drop down menu listing operating systems from Win 95, 98/ME, XP, Vista, Win 7, Win 8 {and if running Win 11 I presume you'll see Win 10?)}; others include Run this program as an administrator (I always check this one if I have to use compatibility mode), or disable full screen optimizations as well as a few others. If you're not successful on your first attempt, try different combinations of the settings you can adjust using compatibility mode.

If none of the compatibility options fixes the issue, please check the FAQ's thread over in the Game Discussion forums. There are lots of different fixes that may solve the issue. You can find the FAQ's thread HERE

I hope this helps because todays game is well worth having, especially if you love decent HOG's with challenging mini games. After trying the above, please do let me know if you managed to get the game working or not. Thank you.
