The Game:
Jane Croft is a typical hidden Object game similar to those released when HOG’s weren’t as fashionable as they are now. There’s no interactivity or twists on the hidden object formula like you get with more recent releases apart from the game being interspersed with several puzzles such as the Cups ‘n’ ball, Lock Pick, Word Cross, Mug Shots, Fuse Box, Alchemy and Code Breaker games plus there’s an un-lockable mini game which you get once you’ve found 40 bullets which are hidden throughout the main game. The game is really just a basic HOG with no subtlety hidden objects, all objects readily stand out from the background images so it’s really just a matter of sifting through the items on view. There’s no timer and no points against you for clicking in the wrong place. In fact I did one level just by randomly clicking on loads of objects and completed the level quicker than if I actually played the game properly.

There is a basic story told through static cut scenes with dialogue that involves the murder of a philandering debtor, who was shot and you are taken to several locations such as the victim’s home, the police station and a casino. When you arrive at one of these destinations you will see sparkling stars in various locations on each picture which you click to gain access to the next level.

You’ll find plenty of videos of game play and spoiler tutorials covering all of the puzzles available in game via Google and You Tube. If I have time I'll post links to more videos and walkthroughs. My original review posted links to my Photobucket slideshow with at least 90 images from the game; but, as mentioned at the top of the review I can no longer access them unless I pay Photobucket $40 a month. Also, it was based off a 1 hour demo as I'd posted the review before the game went live and I didn't have the full version. I'm sure I almost completed the whole game in that time.
Conclusion:
Overall Jane Croft: The Baker Street Murder is an average hidden object game that will probably not impress those that have played any recent HOG’s. If you want basic game play with no frills then this is a game you may enjoy. It’s not particularly hard and there’s really no stress involved as there’s no timed modes either. Just basic game play interspersed with several puzzles from average/boring to reasonably decent and interesting. I didn’t get to the stage where the mystery mini game was unlocked so that’ll be a surprise for those who intend playing this through to the end.

Notes on Security
I scanned a zipped copy of the installed game and it found one hit (Zoner) from 60 antimalware engines. T One out of sixty hits is insignificant and almost certainly a false positive. TooMky Games uses a system where your browser is redirected to their home page so that they earn advertising income, part of which is paid to the developer for allowing the registered game to be downloaded for free. The downloaded executable may include some low level adware that only opens your browser to TooMky's home page after the game has installed. The TooMky Games installation does not inject any malware into your system. You can see the results of the scan via the following link:

Other Free Games:
The latest games from Epic Games include Hell is other Demons an action-platform shooter, with Rogue-lite elements and Overcooked! 2; Journey back to the Onion Kingdom and assemble your team of chefs in classic couch co-op or online play for up to four players. Hold onto your aprons … it’s time to save the world (again!); both will be available next week Thursday 17th June at 4pm UK time/11am EST

Also from Epic, If you play online with friends there's a decent PvE/PvP free FPS game called Scavengers with a coop mode (I checked it out recently and it looks fantastic as well as plays well) and you can still get the clicker RPG Idle Champions as well as other multiplayer games. I've been posting redeemable codes for free chests that contain various buffs and other items for Idle Champions (time limited for 5 to 7 days from the day of posting) over in the forums HERE. They contain various items that boost your heroes abilities and health as well as affect your group of heroes in game, for example potions that boost health or DPS, contracts that can improve armour or weapons already used by the heroes or other contracts that add specific amounts of gold to your bank as well as items of jewellery, armour or weapons that buff your characters stats. I don't usually play clicker type games, but this one is well supported by the developer and has a massive following. I'll be posting codes for as long as I continue to play the game. I've posted some help sheets and links to a game wiki via the above link as well

Please see Delenn's threads for Steam and Non Steam freebies HERE and HERE respectively. Delenn has been updating these regularly for years now. It’s worth adding these links to your favourites and checking regularly for available freebies. Most are only free for a specific time. If you miss the deadline you’ll miss out. Once added to your account, it’s yours to keep. Delenn has recently posted details of more Steam games that are temporarily free. One may be until it leaves early access??? - i.e. Tower Ball - Incremental Tower Défense plus a reflex game called Keyboard Killers are still free. Delenn posted details of a free origin came called Battlefield 4 which is available for free if you have an Amazon Prime account (If you like FPS games, it's a brilliant game to own. (not sure if it's still live).
To those who contributed to the Indie Bundle for Palestinian Aid over on Itch.io, they raised $899,963.91, which was a great achievement.

You'll find hundreds of freeware games of all arcade and indie genres on Itch.io and Caimans Games as well as other sources. Please do check out the game discussion forums for older posts HERE (the sticky section is useful). Many of the earlier posts may be out of date with respect to the links I and others have provided to the free games; however, you only need to know the name of the game to find most of them via other sources. Many of those games from 2008 to around 2017 were posted as part of a project to supplement the lack of weekday games when the game giveaway went to weekend only games around Easter 2008 (mainly instigated due to the financial crisis of 2008) until November 2018 when Falcoware stepped into the weekday slot; however, from around 2015 onwards we did start to get the occasional Steam key for various games offered as limited giveaways, with a restriction on the number of keys available (anywhere from 25 to 2000+). These included over 60 decent AAA games and indie arcade games ; for example some of the better AAA games included , lucky Warhammer: Vermintide 1 & 2 plus DLC for version 2; Dreadlands, Mount & Blade: Warband, Immortal Unchained and Conan Exiles.

I've not posted details of any Indie Gala freebies since my older computer went on the Fritz back in October last year. Since then Indie Gala have added quite a few more free games, some of which are definitely worth downloading. You can find the latest freebies HERE and their showcase list, which includes all the freebies still current; (many of which have been included for a couple of years now) HERE.

It’s worth adding these links to your favourites and checking regularly for available freebies. Most are only free for a specific time. If you miss the deadline you’ll miss out. Once added to your account, they are yours to keep. :)

Whiterabbit-uk,

Sorry for the late additions. I've moved this from the beginning of the review above once I'd taken more images. My original images for this game taken ten years ago have been locked by Photobucket until I pay a subscription. They decreased the free allowance significantly some time ago and all five of my accounts were almost full at the time and now I have tens of thousands of images I've captured while playing over a thousand games over the past decade, as well as mods for various games like Crysis and Battlefield 2 that are no longer accessible to me. They wish me to pay the intermediate monthly fee for each of the five accounts to be able to access them; that's $40 a month just to access my own images.

Thank you to everyone who suggested other sites than Photobucket to host your images. I will have a look at all of them and see if they can be (part of) the solution :-))

I get the 404 error also, which continues with the game after clicking on it. But upon playing my first HOG screen it kicks me out after several selected objects. What change to the DPI scaling lets you continue playing the game? I've tried both High DPI scaling and DPI over-ride and it still kicks me out. Thanks.

Re: storing images

There are many sites that offer you a free web page. Angelfire and Wix are two that immediately come to mind.

I've used Angelfire for years just for storing images that are accessible for what you are doing Whiterabbit-uk.

My images are of quilts, infant burial gowns, tea towels, angels, and other charity items I've sewn and donated, as well as some items I've been commissioned to do.

Of course, as with anything else, your mileage may differ.

Happy Father's Day to those who are celebrating, and to all who fulfill that role no matter what gender you are. So that there are no misunderstandings as to what I mean, I'm a Mom who has fulfilled the role of both Mom & Dad to my daughter since she was 6 years old.

Happy Gaming.

As always thanks to Game Giveaway of the Day and Toomky Games for supplying us with entertainment. Much appreciated.

Ila,

Thank you for your suggestions Ila in Maine; I'll check both of those out.

My two children bought me some really nice presents for Fathers day (an essential oil lamp combined with one of those globes that changes colour, as well as new summer house coat, and several essential oils; plus some really strong dark chocolate. My daughter is also getting me an apparatus that enables me to extract essential oils from various plants. (I extracted Lemongrass oil when I was doing first year chemistry at university, and remember the process. You just need to know the boiling points of the various oils so that you can extract them using a condenser and other glassware). They have also been doing all the daily household chores and are cooking the main meal this evening; ( a very rare event). :)

I'm always spoiled in June as my birthday is usually a few weeks before Fathers day. :) plus my wife is usually off for half term at the end of May/ early June that usually lasts until my birthday. We usually have a three way birthday celebration as my wife's birthday is 8 days before mine and her dads a week before hers. But the last two years have been cancelled due to Covid.

RE: re: storing images...

Another quick couple suggestions in case it helps: perhaps Delenn knows of a way you could script the file transfer -- I recall her earlier suggestion about registering the itch.io games -- since it would be almost impossible to manage that large a transfer manually. 2nd, I'm guessing that your kids use Microsoft Office 365 -- a few times a year the family plan goes on sale for ~$50 per year, & that would give you a total of 6TB OneDrive storage.

Whiterabbit-uk,

Thank You. My birthday was the day before Father's Day. I planned that pretty well, didn't I?

The US just made my birthday a Federal Holiday - though not because of me but for much more important reasons.

I'm very happy you had such a great father's day. You certainly deserve it.

My daughter has a birthday at the beginning of June, her best friend's in on the 9th, and of course mine. We used to do a big party including my son for Father's Day (his is just before Mother's Day in May) but people have moved away and scattered, so now we exchange text messages which somehow just doesn't have the same sentiments.

It is nice to be spoiled, isn't it?

I hope we are done with Covid keeping families apart.

mike,

Thank You for this suggestion.

I will check with Deleen about the file script.

My children are all grown.

Using the free webpages, as long as I make a 'webpage' but don't publish it, I can have up to 1T of images per page and I can make unlimited pages.

Since my income is very limited, I am disabled and on SSDI, the web pages will have to be it for me at this time.

However, I will pass along the suggestion to a couple of people I know who have been looking for a secure place to store images and files who don't have to worry about funds. I know they will be grateful.

Thanks once again.

No, off the top of my head. And I don't have a clue who to ask. Plus it would depend on where you want to transfer.

Yet another game where they FORCE you to be a female. The same creeps who whine if its the other way round. Why can't there be a choice ? Again, the same creeps who say there should be (only when they demand it though)

Be nice Phil K. The overworked, underpaid dev(s) came up with a storyline they could use with a minimum of time & effort. Please don't overthink it. Check out WR's many suggestions of free games, plus there's plenty at low cost, and you can play as any sort of creature, or any race or gender you desire. Happy Gaming! :)

After downloading and installing the file without a problem, I got a message upon starting the game: SERVER ERROR 404 - File or directory not found.
The resource you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable and the screensize was'n't right.

After just clicking on the error screen the game starts normally and after adjusting the DPI-scaling gameplay is normal.

Oh, by the way... I have (had) the same problems with Photobucket and had a lengthy mail conversation with them about the ridiculous change in their prices.
The images I show on my weblog all have a watermark now. Well, I told them I will never ever pay the price they charge to show my own photo's. I have 2 full albums. To show you what I mean (starting on October 21, 2019) see my weblog. A small fee would be acceptable and I did that for a year and then the price shot up. It was a trial offer they said.... The first few images have been stored on the weblog itself, without a link to any photohost, but storage capacity isn't very high then. I have been looking for another image host, but haven't been very busy placing other articles. Link to weblog https://www.zeelandnet.nl/weblog/fimo/ (hopefully the link works here) On my weblog I have also mentioned the Photobucket policy.

tiscrea © - The Netherlands,

Hi tiscrea © - The Netherlands

I've been using https://postimages.org/ for the past three years, uploading images for these reviews on an almost daily basis. It was relatively new when I found it following the demise of a previous host I was using. If you see any of my reviews from around 2017 and before all the images have gone b3ecasue the host closed down with no warning. Postimage was totally free when I started, but they recently added a paid for mode. whether they are going to go the same way as Photobucket; I really don't know, but so far they have been excellent. It's not Photobucket, but they have improved their service significantly since I first started using them.

I don't post personal images an those sites.

Personally I won't post any family images online unless it's a private server such as Discord; I don't even use Facebook except to keep in touch with some old friends and only have one image of me and my wife at the top of the account.. I know that cloud sites are extremely useful for sharing photo's, but I still prefer creating slide shows on DVD's and giving them to other family members. If I want to share a photo with friends it's usually posted onto Discord or other messaging servers.

I've only ever used cloud based sites to upload images of the games I've reviewed.

I can actually access a few hundred megabytes of images from each of my accounts. What I was thinking of doing is downloading those, then deleting them, so that it would free up more images, but with tens of thousands on each of the five accounts it would take a considerable amount of time.

There are a couple of accounts that hold a few thousand images for a massive review (at my last count it was over 1000 pages long) of in game images of all the battlefield 2 mods and images of each map as well s in game images showing what the map environments look like. Which I started working on many years ago, but keep putting on the back burner because many of the links I place (as hyperlinks) to the various downloads for the maps and mods of which there are over 1000 mods and more maps for the game. Each mod is described in as much detail as possible and each map that works with that mod is described, with advice on tactics for the better maps as well as links to each download. The links end up disappearing when the host site (usually a dedicated clan site) decides it's no longer practical to host the files or when they decide to move on to newer games. I'm considering creating a server specifically for the downloads, which amount to well over a terabyte of mods and maps just for that one game an make it available at weekend sonly to the Battlefield community, so that I know that all the links will work. :)

Sadly I just don't trust cloud based storage.

When games started to become more popular via digital downloads, I remember saying to a few friends that it was a mistake as many of the sites that offer those downloads won't be around in ten years. Of the many sites I've purchased digital games from quite a few no longer exist, for example, I purchased over 900 games from Reflexive arcade who were bought out by Amazon several years ago. They gave anyone who had purchased games from the original vendor six months to redownload and activate the games before shutting the servers down. The problem there was that when you upgraded your computer, the activation code was deactivated and you'd have to reapply for a new code. So long as you had the original order number you'd get a new activation code. When Amazon closed the servers, that was no longer possible, so I was left with 900+ demos a sI had the installers for each game, but wa sunable to get new codes. I payed $19.99 for every one of those 900+ games, all of which were lost until I found one of those hacker code generators that someone had uploaded. That enables me to re register some of the games, but not all. As for the other sites I've never been able to re register those as they had similar systems to Reflexive arcade, but I've nver found any code generators for the games. DRM destroyed the gaming industry as far as I'm concerned. I wish we could go back to the old CD/DVD based games where you could reinstall to your hearts desire. I'm still playing old games that are on disk. In fact I just reinstalled Battlefield 1942 last night and am reinstalling Men of Valor later today, both games are 16+ years old now and still activatable (real word)?

'Scuze the rant...

Whiterabbit-uk,

Thank you for your information. Personally I don't have Facebook, Twitter and whatever other "Social" media sites you can use. I also don't use cloud services, because I'm not a big fan of those either. I prefer keeping files on my computer only.

I also thought about moving all my images for my (creative) weblog to another host, but there are a lot (!!!) and also I have to change all the links I posted during a few years...

Also I prefer the good old DVD/CD of XHD for storing private files. I don't even use WIFI but am still cable-connected. My mobile phone still work with smoke signals ;-)

By the way, I have an extensive collection of HOG's that I downloaded over the years and they are mostly still playable :-P

tiscrea © - The Netherlands, I wonder if the 404 error you are seeing is caused by a Web page referenced within the game no longer being at the same address as it was when the game was created?

tiscrea © - The Netherlands,

Same here with respect to keeping all my files on DVD's Blu Rays etc. All my SD and Micro SD cards I've used in my cameras, once full are placed in a solid waterproof proof box made specifically for SD and Micro SD cards and I back them up onto either DVD or Blu Ray (usually both, plus place then on one of my external drives). I also don't use Wi Fi. When we moved to this house several years ago we spent a small fortune extending and modernising the place. I had CAT 6 cables run to all the rooms (under the floors and in the cavity walls) apart from the kitchen (an oversight), with switches placed to ensure each room has at least one connection; though the living room has two and my study has three wall sockets for wired connections. My daughter uses Wi-Fi with her laptop and iPad, but has the option to connect via cable if she is downloading of watching movies as cable is much better than Wi-Fi for such things. Everything else is wired.

I do have a Facebook and Twitter accounts, but they are only used for getting free software. I don't use them in the traditional sense i.e. as social media. Actually my Twitter account was suspended last year as apparently they don't like you using them to advertise second hand for the software you get for free for placing the add on your twitter account. As I've never sent a tweet in my life I've never bothered to reactivate the account.

When we used to go away on vacation (pre Covid), you rarely saw anyone in the reception areas except when new guests were arriving. However, several years ago I noticed that the reception area's, that usually had the best Wi-Fi connections were suddenly becoming inundated with people, all on their phones, laptops and iPads. :)

"Sadly I just don't trust cloud based storage. ">

Microsoft, Amazon, & Google clouds are safer than anything else -- probably trillions of dollars worth of biz depend on them. For one thing, their data centers are more secure than most banks, and that includes measures against physical threats like floods, fire, and natural disasters. For another, everything is stored on multiple drives that are monitored constantly. And they have security against cyber threats that you could never implement on your own -- when stuff stored on Amazon is leaked/stolen it's always because some idgit didn't configure their account storage properly.

BTW, Amazon also offers cold storage that's Very cheap -- the catch is that you can't get to your stuff immediately.

"DRM destroyed the gaming industry as far as I'm concerned."

DRM was/is the result -- the culprit is basic human greed. On the one side, some people want everything they can get their hands on for free, whether they actually need or will use whatever or not, and on the other, some people want to squeeze every penny out of as many poor souls as possible.

"Same here with respect to keeping all my files on DVD's Blu Rays etc. "

Might double check those BD discs from time to time -- while DVDs will last 100 years, the BD discs you burn have generally poor longevity.

" I also don't use Wi Fi."

Wired is faster and more reliable, But, with LOTS of devices it's either unavailable or only available on more expensive models, e.g. my Roku TV in the bedroom. While it's dependent on your home's wiring, powerline network extenders can work very well to give you wired connectivity in every room, and some offer WiFi access too, so no dead spots. That said, WiFi 6 is more secure, though both devices & network have to be WiFi 6 to matter. Otherwise, while WiFi is definitely hackable, you can limit your vulnerability, e.g. don't have sharing or remoting etc. turned on, always use a VPN away from home and so on.

mike,

I agree Mike, Greed is what forced developers to add DRM, but it was a step back for honest gamers who always supported the developers by buying the games. Because of the greed of others, I've lost thousands of pounds/dollars worth of games simply because the games I purchased with DRM from small developers/distributors, who no longer exist, so I can no longer play those games; at least most of them. Thankfully some of the developers that went under; for example, Real Arcade, at least were taken on board by other distributors so I still have access to the games I purchased from Real Arcade (I think it was Gamehouse that now hold the rights to all of Real Arcades old games).

After all that said, I've purchased so many games, I doubt I'd have time to play all f them before I'm dust. I still think supporting developers by buying their games is the way to go; that way we get better games from them as many developers will invest the profits they make into new technology to create even more interesting and different games If I've really liked a game given away via the game giveawayoftheday I'll often either buy it or have already done so. Many of the original giveaways from 2006 to 2008 I'd already purchased via sites like Reflexive Arcade and Alawar.
