For those running Chrome, it's likely the browser will block the game, probably due to the Themida wrapper, which was introduced several years ago because of unscrupulous community members hacking then uploading the registered game to peer to peer sites. Themida code can be used to wrap malware, so some security software and in this case the Chrome browser blocks the installation as a precaution.
The workaround for this is to click the Chrome menu and select "Downloads", then click "Keep Dangerous File" or alternatively, the dialog box that pops up has both ''Cancel'' and ''Keep'' buttons. Just click ''KEEP''. (Thanks to Cad and Ferdie for their advice).
I assure you the game is totally safe. The giveaway team has been giving away games virtually every weekend for approaching 12 years; and, between Dec 2006 and April 2008 virtually every day). Over that time they have NEVER given away a game infected with malware.

There is a limited number of Steam keys (only 5) for an award winning Hidden Object game available tomorrow morning July 2nd. If you are an aficionado of the genre, and don’t have the game, it will be well worth entering. I purchased the said game when it was released last year and despite finding most HOG’s boring and lack-luster, found that game innovative, extremely well done and a breath of fresh air both graphically and game play wise. Don’t forget to visit the game site tomorrow for a chance to win one of those keys.

To get a feel for today's game before you download it, please check out the following game play videos of James Patterson Women's Murder Club: Death in Scarlet HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE. You can also see more videos, a link to a selection of over 50 in-game images and a couple of written walkthroughs (in the hints section) in the ‘Other Reviews and Videos’ section below.

James Patterson Women's Murder Club: Death in Scarlet
In Brief
If you like/love TV series such as NCIS, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, The Sopranos, The Wire, Dexter, Breaking Bad, Poirot, Sherlock, Elementary and Diagnosis Murder, reading James Patterson novels and enjoy playing HOG’s you’ll probably enjoy playing this crime solving hidden object game with puzzles based on the bestselling novelist James Patterson; (he has the highest number of NY times best sellers of all time). Despite its age (a decade old), I found it refreshingly enjoyable to play after attempting to play innumerable stale HOG’s over the past several years. I give this a decent 8 out of 10
Installation:
James Patterson Women's Murder Club: Death in Scarlet downloads to an 82 MB zip file that unzips to three files, (a setup.gcd security wrapper, the set-up file and a read me). Those with multiple hard drives can save games on any drive they wish. The newly installed game is 89.2 MB in size. The game installs to the following path by default, but can be changed by the user if you prefer:
C:\Program Files (x86)\MyPlayCity.com\James Patterson Women's Murder Club - Death in Scarlet
Four shortcuts are installed to the desktop. three of which can be safely deleted (Play Online Games, MyPlayCity Games and shortcuts to a free online game which vary each week). Also, if you don't like icons installed to the quick launch task bar, make sure you uncheck the box when the additional tasks window appears (after the Select Start Menu Folder window)

The Game:
Looking for murder and intrigue, wrapped up in a meaty story with lots of twists? Women’s Murder Club: Death in Scarlet, a combination hidden object puzzler and detective adventure, should do the trick.
Women’s Murder Club is based off the popular Women’s Murder Club James Patterson novels and the spin-off television series of the same name. The character’s personalities and appearances resemble their fictional counterparts rather than the television actors (which is probably a good thing considering the show’s Nielsen ratings). If you’ve read all the books or seen all the episodes, don’t fret – the mystery is completely original, so there’s no chance of spoiling your fun.
Now, about the murder…the body of a strikingly beautiful young girl is discovered at Marin Vista Point. Forensic analysis indicates she’s been poisoned with an overdose of aphrodisiac. No one’s reported her missing, and there’s no clues to her identity, other than a mysterious lotus tattoo and eerie Chinese branding across her chest. Who could do this, and why?
image

image
As you investigate the murder, uncovering new victims and suspects, you’ll have the chance to play from three-character perspectives – Lindsey Boxer, a homicide detective with the San Francisco police, Claire Washburn, a talented forensic examiner, and Cindy Thomas, a news reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle who’s got a knack for digging up dirt. Assistant district attorney Jill Bernhardt does a few cameo scenes, but ultimately works behind the scenes.
In true hidden object style, you’ll find yourself searching through suitably cluttered rooms and crowded crime scenes. During each investigation, you’ll have a list of items to find in each scene, plus a list of tasks to accomplish before advancing, such as getting a victim’s fingerprints or doing an identity search. Game play is untimed, and there’s no penalty for clicking useless objects, so feel free to explore the surroundings. You’ll also get 5 clues during each investigation, just in case you get stuck.
During your investigation, you’ll also gather inventory contents. Your inventory holds these special items, which you’ll need to use to solve the in-game puzzles. Puzzles are different from normal game play, and have you doing a variety of tasks which reveal further information about the case. For example, Claire often has the job of putting her chemicals in order using logical clues, and then testing each chemical in a Petri dish to note reaction and determine the nature of each substance.
image

image
Cindy has the tedious task of arranging microfiche in proper order (by color and category), and then deciding which film will reveal an article pertinent to the case. There are also word games reminiscent of wheel of fortune, a bunch of jigsaw-type assembly puzzles, and one suspect chase through a hedge maze to name a few more. If any of the puzzles have you stuck, or you’d rather just play the hidden object component, you can press “solve” to skip them.
If you want to review your clues, or need advice on what to do next, you can check your evidence cards and investigation docket. These will include everything you’ve uncovered, along with hints at what you still need to solve the case.
Women’s Murder Club goes beyond what you’d expect from a hidden object mystery. The use of inventory adds depth to the puzzles, and there’s a great deal of realism to the detective work. You’ll find yourself examining the faces and bodies of victims, using black light to search for bloodstains, and finding ways to "accidentally" open letters without a warrant. Perhaps the best part is that the story is detailed and engaging, with plenty of twists to keep you guessing, but still offering subtle foreshadowing so that you can speculate as you play.
The production values are very high, with suitable background music fitting each atmosphere, and some exceptional artwork (particularly the character art). It’s worth noting that this is one of the few hidden object games where virtually all the items look like what they should. Granted, some are exceedingly small, but still fair. Plus, most of the items in the scenes make sense and are logical additions to the rooms. You’ll still have an array of butterflies and the occasional boomerang, but it doesn’t spoil the mood. Although replay value is limited once you’ve solved the case, you can expect at least 5-6 hours of solid gameplay, and many of the objects are different each time you play.
image

image
While there’s heaps of things to praise, there’s always things to look forward to in potential sequels. For one, it would be nice to see a bit more variety in some of the mini-games. Some got repetitive after they were used a few times in the game, like the microfiche and chemical sorting that needed doing in practically every investigation. It would also be great to see more objects in the rooms, since generally they contained less than a dozen, often fewer.
With excellent production values, solid gameplay, and a strong storyline, Women’s Mystery Club is an addictive and intriguing hidden object mystery that should please fans and newcomers alike. It manages to be suitably creepy and detailed without relying on gore, and offers enough realism to give the player a real “detective” feeling.
SPOILERS…Hints…….SPOILERS:
Women's Murder Club: Death in Scarlet spans across 18 locations and 9 unique investigations. Here are a few hints from the game in case you get stuck. If you really get stuck, there's a link to a full game walkthrough below.
INVESTIGATION #1: Shelf of bottles: You must arrange the bottles in order using the hints on them. Unfortunately the hints change each scene/game so there's no cheat for this puzzle.
INVESTIGATION #2: Coffee Shop Tokens: There are 5 tokens in the coffee shop - briefcase, basket, on counter, on railing, on video game
INVESTIGATION #3: Microfiche Blocks: ROWS = Blue, Pink, Black, Orange, Green scarlet cover
INVESTIGATION #4: PHOTO WALL: I got stuck with the photo wall in the back of the bar. One of the photos should be lit up. Drag the photo of the unknown victim from your inventory over the photo on the back wall.

Conclusion:
The game has detailed and realistic detective work. Lots of original minigames and a very engaging story with excellent graphics. There is some repetition with the mini games, but there’s nothing else (IMO) of note that was negative. The game is well worth downloading, especially if you like HOG’s.

Having problems installing today's game?
If you have a problem installing or activating or getting James Patterson Women's Murder Club: Death in Scarlet to work please visit the problems section, which you can find in the FAQ's thread HERE. Also read through the community’s comments because sometimes fixes have already been posted. The main issue we have is with the giveaway wrapper, which uses a Themida based code to protect the games executable. Unfortunately, Themida is also used to hide malware; so, as a precaution, some security software may block the installation and sometimes even delete the executable file. Blocking or deletion is usually determined partly by the way your computer is set up. Usually you'll get a message saying ''the file is corrupted'', but the files are okay. There are a couple of things you can do to overcome this issue. The first is to reboot in safe mode with networking, install the game then reboot, or secondly you can (at your own risk) temporarily turn off your security, install the game, then turn your security back on. A note of reassurance to those that choose the latter and quicker method. The game giveaway team have been giving away games for over a decade (Dec 2006 & prior to that, via the main site 2 or 3 times weekly from Oct 2006 to Dec 2006) and have 'NEVER' given away a game infected with malware; they always test every giveaway with several of the top anti-malware suites to ensure all games are free from malware.
If for any reason you want to contact the giveaway team, for example, if you have a problem getting the latest game or other issues that the FAQ's thread or these comments don't cover or solve or if you have a game to offer the community you can do so HERE

HI,

It started off interesting and yuu do move along easily, but then becomes a bit boring.
You repeat same steps for each case etc. The graphics are good and it combines hog
along with clue discovery. It downloaded fast and opened easy. If you like mysteries and
hog, you would enjoy it more. Thanks for another good game and have a great week, Lee

The three (I think) games in this series are all great! I replay them from time to time. They are a fun mix of all sorts of puzzles and tasks. I wish they had made more, and I wish new games were made this good!
I already own it, but wanted to add my comment "for" this game for anyone on the fence about downloading it.
Why not try? I never have problems running it on whatever computer I'm using at the time, and I've played it on Windows over several years.

Disappointed in the game overall. I played to the end just to see who did it, but it was the same three games over and over again: rearrange the chemical bottles, put the microfiche boxes in the correct order, find the common words at the coffee shop. Too bad the developer didn't spend a little bit more time creating new puzzles to make it worth playing. Glad I didn't pay for it :)

Played enough for a quick review (about halfway through). So far, an okay game with light challenge level. A few objects hard to see as the colors are very muted. Some mini-games, particularly the lab testing, are very repetitious and while putting the bottles in order might take a bit of thinking, checking off the "purple" and "boil" boxes after the words "purple boil" pop up is pretty brainless :). Perhaps things get a bit harder soon; perhaps I will regret not having a walkthrough, although the 5 hints do regenerate each "investigation" (though you probably won't need them all by any means).

Overall, a pleasant way to spend an afternoon, though not very engaging or, so far, thought-provoking. Solid C?

Thanks. Detective theme is nice addition to genre. Being big fan of the mentioned TV series (& a few new ones just for summer like on PBS) this is going to be keeper even though bit worn down on HOGs. Windows 10 x64 Pro & Chrome no issues. Keep those & graphics updated - Chrome has way of delaying its updates so Menu/Help/About GC. Starts an instant check & update if needed.
Chrome has begun tightening up its internals lately causing some false flags. Edge got a few new helpful additions so good backup browser.

Loving this game! Thanks to GGOTD, MPC, I-Play, and Floodlight Games for today's game.

FINALLY a HOG where the things you find are USED to advance the story, and where things you are searching etc. MAKE SENSE: HOORAY!

I don't know the "Women's Murder Club" series but I'm hugely enjoying the "detection" element of Death In Scarlet. I noted the humourous placement of the "Smoking Permitted" sign in the police station near the bin, with its newer "Smoking Prohibited" notice replacing it on the wall. Could the developer be a smoker? ;) And as an aside, it would be nice if all the clocks and watches in HOGs (not including those which are "objects") could be made to show the current time of day …

Anyway, based on Investigation (chapter) 1, I think this will be a very enjoyable game and only one thing I don't like about it so far: I don't know whether or not the Hints are limited to a set number per Investigation or whether they can be "topped up" in any way?

Thanks again to all concerned.

PS: Downloaded this in Chromium on Win7, got the Discard/Keep dialog box worked just fine.

Windows 10 Pro, build 1709, Chrome Version 67.0.3396.99 (Official Build) (64-bit). Installed quickly and plays beautifully except as one user pointed out, the objects are real small. It doesn't fill my screen either. :-( I don't have an option to keep dangerous files. Good game so far.

As always, the game downloaded and installed perfectly on my win 10 laptop. This game, I have played before, and it is a good one....obviously, or I would not have wanted to play it again.;-) Let me also say, that in the many years I have download and purchased through GiveAwayOfTheDay, I have NEVER EVER had any type of bug. I also have ALWAYS used Norton Symantec for my 'puter's security, and after some time, it will stop giving the false positives from GAOTD. For lovers of hidden object games, this one is well worth the time to play. Thanks everyone !

Downloaded and installed with no problems using Chrome on Windows 7/64. It's a fun, interesting HOG with an engaging storyline and a real mystery to solve. My only complaint so far is that the hidden objects are small and blend into the scenery a little too well and I'm getting a bit of eyestrain trying to pick them out. But it's a keeper for me.

Whiterabbit, it's good to have you back.

I didn't have any trouble with Chrome and downloading and installing this game... So far I'm enjoying it but ran into a bit of a problem. When I tried to brush the sand off the hand my 'brush' avoided the area around the fingers. It wouldn't move the cursor anywhere near. I tried going to the far left and around but as soon as I crossed the frame the brush jumped to the left. (Not sure you can understand my description). I hope I can work around this... it looks like a really great game! Thanks for all the work you put into this site. I look forward to weekends. :)

Okay I persisted and the brush finally worked - just kept trying to drag it over. I could tell there was a change because something got revealed on the hand.

Now a new problem (SPOILER:) in the datebook I can't use the pencil - it doesn't reveal anything. This might be a showstopper. I closed it down and will go back when I have more time.

Anne Hogan, I had to get out of full-screen mode and go to the small screen size to get the pencil to uncover the clue. Then I went back to full screen. Items were too small to see otherwise.

Hi, all. I got the game downloaded and installed OK, but when I go to launch, after the splash screen, the game just jumps right to the MPC web site. I have tried right-clicking and "Run as Administrator" and that didn't help. I have Win 7 Home Premium on a laptop w/8 GB RAM and about 233 GB free disk space. My native screen resolution is 1366x768. Any ideas?

Hi Lara, Check the game FAQ's thread over in the game discussion forums. I've linked to it in my review, or you can go directly to the game discussion forums where you'll find the thread in the sticky section. Also, try running the game again, then immediately check your event logs, (type event viewer in the search field) to see if there are any error messages related to the problem. If you see anything, but don't understand what it means, post it here. hopefully I or one of the tech-savvy community members can help. The game is quite old, so it's unlikely to be your graphics drivers, but it may still be worth downloading the latest drivers for your graphics chip (you can find what your graphics chip is by opening up the Direct X diagnostics panel (type dxdiag in the search field) then open up the display tab. I'd also update your DX9.0c and Open GL drivers :)

I downloaded this on Waterfox browser, and had no problems. I had this game back when I had Windows 7. I must have played it 4 or 5 times. I think I bought it at Wal Mart. It's a different type of HOG game. Plus it has you doing tasks that you don't do in other HOG games. Sort of reminds me of the Shutter Island HOG that I used to own. I always enjoyed this game.

Was thrilled to see this offered today, as it's on my list of "oldies" that have gotten good reviews and that I want to check out. I will post a longer review when I've played a while, but did want to mention two concerns: First, the link to a "full walkthrough" above leads to just a synopsis of the game, no walkthrough. A search turned up only one walkthrough from an unfamiliar site, but it's not a regular full walkthrough. Still going to give this a shot, but really do prefer if there's a walkthrough available for those times when I'm really stuck.

Second, I see that a third of the votes already are negative, but don't see any reviews here mentioning any negatives; this is frustrating for those of us who rely on reviews to guide us whether something is worth downloading. It looks as if folks are down-voting just for the Chrome issue, which is REALLY not a good thing to do. i'd think it better to definitely post the issue in the comments, but don't downvote a game for any reason other than that related to gameplay?

All that said, looking forward to giving this a shot, will post a review later, and hope someone finds a good walkthrough just in case :).

..............................Moderator Comment.................................
Hi Neme, most of the negative votes posted here are probably from community members who haven't even played the game. They may have had issues installing the game, or they don't like HOG's. This issue has been discussed countless times. Maybe if they included other categories as well as the thumbs up and down, for example, unable to install, issues with security, too old a game and I don't like this genre. Including such categories would then give a better indication as to whether or not the game was worth downloading; of course, as always, we rely on the honesty of the community to use the system fairly. :)

Reply   |   Comment by neme  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+6)

WR, that makes sense. Another "giveaway" forum I use solved the issue by requiring a comment in order to vote. Doesn't totally solve the issue, but does make for better guidance.

How about the walkthrough? As I mentioned, the link you provided for "walkthrough" only leads to gamezebo's synopsis of the game, no walkthrough. Judging from reviews and comments on other sites (and comments here about the dark graphics), it sounds like this one might need a walkthrough to get through unless the hint system is really generous. I never like using walkthroughs or hints, but sometimes...:)

Reply   |   Comment by neme  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Therese S., thanks. I did find the Method Shop one, but it's more hints than a full walkthrough. The other one looks useful (and I can't imagine why I couldn't find it by searching; go figure!), but honestly, the puzzles in this one were easy enough to not need a walkthrough after all, and that one doesn't have the locations of hidden objects, which I thought I might need. But the hint system is generous, so no problem finishing.

Just didn't love this one (see my later review).

steve (and everyone else having "problems" downloading this in Chrome or Chromium), the dialog box that pops up has both Cancel and Keep buttons. Just ignore Chrome's "nannying" message and click KEEP. No need to switch off your security while downloading: you ONLY need to do that when you run the EXE after unpacking it; and you can re-enable security as soon as the standard MPC installer dialog box appears.
I admit this is a minor annoyance that has appeared in Chrome recently, but today's download is NOT a dangerous file! Just bypass the Chrome/Chromium dialog box by clicking KEEP and all will be well. Like many security programs, Chrome/Chromium is warning you about the Themida code protection which GGOTD have used for a couple of years now to secure downloads from piracy.

steve, You have down voted the game because your browser won't allow the file to be downloaded? Really? Just use Firefox, or IE, or Edge, or Opera. If Chrome thinks that the Themida wrapper is malicious then Chrome deserves a down vote, not the game.

I haven't checked in in a while, and when I do, nostalgia washes over me. :) I remember this game well. It was actually one of the better HOGS of its era...but it's old. Seem to remember a decent solve a mystery type story line. I seem to remember decent mini-games too...on theme. Not sure if I got it from Big Fish, or even possibly from here. All I can say is if I remember it this well, it's probably worth getting if you haven't played it. But it's quite probably from the pre-windows 7 era, so I'd try compatibility mode for XP if your current rig starts borking.
