If you wish to see the problems section, which I've now incorporated into the FAQ's thread you can find it HERE and the recent games deals (now called The Weekly roundup of game deals) is HERE. I've still to post the installation section. Will do so later. In the meantime, if you have problems installing the game, do post a comment, thank you.

The Game:

In the third installment of the Heroes of Hellas series, we see the once beautiful city of Athens destroyed by raining fire, sent by evil forces. Athena has come to you for help, and has promised to reward you beyond your wildest imagination if you can help rebuild her city to its former glory and save her magical tree to restore her powers. Oedipus will help you along the way through this city-building match three game, which varies little from its predecessors.

Continuing in the footsteps of the first two games, Heroes of Hellas 3: Athens is a match-three game that doesn’t require you to swap gem locations, but rather asks you to click and drag your mouse over groups of three or more like symbols, which rest in hexagons. Making a match of five or more symbols results in a coin, or wild-card that can be used to extend your chains or make otherwise impossible chains valid. Other power-ups appear at random as you play, with more being available in later levels. You’ll see multiple kinds of bombs that destroy surrounding tiles, winged tiles that reveal hidden sections of the grid, or even golden rings that remove all tiles in various directions (including diagonally).

The goals for each level vary, but ultimately require you to collect all of the treasure chests, gems, etc. from the screen, or destroy all of the golden tiles or monoliths. Golden tiles rest underneath symbols and are destroyed automatically when a match is made on top of them, while monoliths block entire portions of the grid, and are destroyed when a match is made that touches one or more of them.

Carrying over from previous installments is the ability to recruit Gods to help you on your journey. Starting with Zeus, you’ll be able to collect tokens or lockets through hidden object scenes that will see one new member being added to your team. These sequences happen automatically during gameplay, and are therefore mandatory. The scenes themselves are simple enough, requiring you to collect the building materials for themed objects and then replace them in the scene proper. While some items are harder to find than others, the hint recharge button fills in a matter of seconds, so you can feel free to use it indefinitely just to move on.

2
3
Once you recruit these Gods, the game becomes more complicated as their tiles are added to each level. Collecting enough of them will allow you to use their power (in our Zeus example, he will shuffle all non-locked tiles on the board), with different levels being available in the strength of their power-up depending on how long you store their tiles for future use.

As for restoring Athens, this is accomplished in between most levels. Each basic level (whether playing in the timed or relaxed gameplay mode) rewards you with coins, with those coins being used to purchase homes, gardens, fishing piers, bridges and more for Athens. After every set of upgrades, Athena’s tree will gain more of its life, thus giving Athena more power, but you’ll frequently be stopped by other interruptions that slow the rebuilding process. For instance, the Gates of Hell itself open up in Athens early on (another attempt by the culprit to destroy the town forever), forcing you to collect pieces of an artifact that will allow you to close them. These levels bring in a jigsaw puzzle mini-game as well, but they’re incredibly light in terms of complexity and can be finished in under 30 seconds.

Unfortunately, that can be said about the majority of the game. While there may be tons of content here, each level itself is rather short, and once you finish the game’s story, there really isn’t much to make you come back. Still, returning the light and life to Athens is incredibly satisfying while the campaign lasts, making Heroes of Hellas 3: Athens worth a purchase for those who are fine playing a game just once.

Conclusion

If you like match three games and in particular games like 4 Elements where you create chains of matches it may be worth trying to get a hold of one of the 100 codes. Not sure whether it's a Steam code (when I click on a link in the admin panel it takes me to Steam) or whether you get an Alawar code. So far both games in this giveaway category are also available on Steam; I purchased this game last year when it was released to Steam (13th March). You can buy it on Steam for the paltry sum of £1.99.

?? AGAIN NO GAME TODAY ?? Only for win ?

...........................Moderator comment.............................

Their really is no need to use such language, especially on a family site like this. Considering the giveaway team have secured well over a thousand games over the course of their history, I find your attitude very selfish and childish. Just because we aren't getting a game today you fell the need to swear in such a fashion (expletives removed).

The giveaway team rely on developers and distributors such as Alawar, Immanita and Playix Entertainment to donate games. If those developers saw comments such as your's they would think twice about donating more games. We really can't expect to get games every weekend. You should be thanking them for securing so many instead of being such a ****. It's been almost a year since we missed any games.

Thanks to the giveaway team and developers/distributors for continuing to give us games

First, shame on you. Apparently, instead of giving away free games to all you have changed it to contests and therefore only 100 winners will be able to get the game. Is this how it will be with each giveaway? I just got a new laptop. I know I am to blame, and it was bad judgement on my part, but my previous pc was NOT backed up. So lost eveything that was not on a shared system, etc. I can relload games I own. And because they are accts (I still have), my games on Facebook and Google Chrome are intact. But all individual downloads (mostly games) were lost. I was hoping to begin a new catalog/library of games with the help of gamegiveaway. But, if games will only go to a few (lucky) winners of contests each giveaway, it isn't much of a giveaway at all. You SHOULD change the name to GameContestoftheDay. And it surely will not help me to build up anything. If I am fortunate, very fortunate, and enter every contest, I might win once or twice a year. If unlucky, I most likely will have nothing. Only countless empty entries and lots of wasted time & effort.
And what is worse, this first time, getting the first entries, by getting to steam & joining Alawar...it took awhile, I did all of that, and I still cannot get the entries. Apparently, by the comments, I'm not the only one. The link or the system must have some sort of glitch or malfunction. So I won't even have those extra entries to increase my minescule chances even slightly.
Why don't you just give away the games to everyone as you did before? You only did it on weekends (just twice weekly). That comes out to about 104 games per year. Are things so bad, the economy so bad that you can't give away that few any longer. And it isn't new, just released games of versions you were giving to us anyway. So what is the problem here?
Just to let you know, I am a disabled vet, living on a fixed income. Things are (very) tight for me. I don't beg )or even ask for) handouts, charity, or anything. But I do use and fully appreciate what is out there & available. Especially "freebies". I am "shut in" much of the time; am online a lot. Play games quite a bit. It takes my mind off things, keeps my facilties a bit sharper as they deterierate, and takes up time. Should I just sit in front of the TV for hours instead? But, however much time I spend on gameplay, games & programs are extras, luxuries, NOT necessicities. As such, rarely fit into my limited budget. Free games really help. Your site & free game giveaways was a great help and a blessing. But now you seem to have chosen to take it away. If you have no choice, I understand. But at least can you tell me if that is the case, and let me, and the rest of us know why. Let us know if contests will be the norm, your daily (weekend) procedure for game giveaways from now on. Thanks. (There are other sites & ways to get games. Only so many add either ads, extras, or at times even so much to slow down your pc, even a virus possibly. Your site was always trusted & secure. I hate to use others, but may have little choice now.) So, let me and others know. And if this is now the way of things here, if you or any others reading this have recommendations/suggestions for any other Safe & secure worthy game sites, PLEASE let me know. Thak you so very much.

Yes I can, When I click on... " Join Group Alawar Games on Steam " a box pops up " Message From Webpage " - " Sorry we can not check Private or Limited Profiles."
So there is no way to get the 10 points for joining the group on steam because it says you can't verify it! That's really not very fair!!! We go through all the work & jump all the hurdles & we don't get the biggest point maker you have....

I am very appreciative of all the games I have gotten from this site. I also appreciate all the work you have done on the reviews WhiteRabbit. I am sorry some people have complained about their free games and stupid stuff over the years. I have never complained. I appreciate them because I cannot afford to buy them. I have gained a vast knowledge (thanks to GOTD) about what kinds of games I like and what game makers I admire. When (if ever) I can afford to buy games, I know which kinds I will look for. So, thanks for that, too. I'm sorry to say that I don't like this "new" way of providing games. Perhaps we'll all have to get used to it, just as we have always had to do with so many other things in life. Thanks again, WhiteRabbit, for all you have done to make this a better experience. ~~Wendy

What once was ceases to be and just is no more.

The giveaway sites as a whole are both sad shells of what they used to be. The software giveaways have been gone down to useless stuff most do not want for quite some time now. The game giveaways have slowly followed suit.

Giveaway Of The Day and Game Giveaway Of The Day used to be one of my first stops when logging onto my computer. I eagerly could not wait to see what great new software or game was the days offering. I have not downloaded a software offering in over a year I'm sure. Now games are no longer given away but instead you have to try and win them in the worst possible way. It was not enough that they had begun to harvest our email or facebook info (if you did not know to give them some useless stuff) but they want to go even deeper grabbing twitter, google and heavens forbid your friends information. (People please don't do that non-favor to your friends.)

This is gonna be it for me. Not gonna waste my time anymore hoping things will return to their former glory. This is the end of an era I did enjoy.

Thanks for all the great giveaways in the past. I really appreciated them.

I think the whole point of adding Facebook etc is to get the game giveaway site out to as many others as possible; that said, and as I've already repeated several times over the last few weeks, you don't actually need to sign into a Facebook account. You click on the Facebook button, then cancel it. The green download button then appears with no Facebook requirement. As for emails, you just use a disposable. The more community members who visit this site, the more likely we are to get more and better games.

Yes, we used to get a lot more games, but that was before the indie bundles hit the scene. Now you can get £100 worth of games for a few pounds on a weekly basis. All the giveaway team are trying to do is inform a greater audience. This new thing the game giveaway team are doing, is not replacing the main game giveaway. It's an opportunity for a certain number of community members to get Steam keys, which will then enable them to reinstall the game at any time on any computer.

There is a game giveaway on Sunday

Here's to hoping this method doesn't last... I will be getting a new computer in the next few months so will lose a ton of games (most were lost when my game drive crashed though). If this continues, I suppose I will keep my plan with Big Fish that I had hoped I could discontinue. It may be time to unsubscribe from emails and notifications on social sites too. :( Old method was great, but all good things come to an end.

What a pile of crap. Guess it's finally come time to just watch GOTD and GGOTD sail into the sunset. The gam doesn't have to be loaded with spamware, you have to ask for spam just to get it now. No thanks, hard to lose an old friend, but when you are giving away a whole 100 licenses to a $3 dollar game, It's ridiculous

Entered, because I wouldn't mind having the newsletter anyway, I hadn't got around to signing up, and I found this game's original version addictive when it was given away here recently. Had a few minor quibbles with it, mainly about the earning of trophies, but that game was a keeper, so, hopefully, I'll win this one too, as match 3 may be my favorite game type. Thanks GGOTD and Alawar

Are you kidding me? No more Giveaway of the Day games? We now have to enter a competition? Hardly free and I wont be bullied into entering competitions that only lead to spam in our emails.

......................Moderator Comment........................

No, the new thing is to give a certain number of community members the opportunity to get codes that will enable them to reinstall the game anytime anywhere. We are still getting free games. It's getting harder for the game giveaway team to get more games. It's been ages since we last missed a giveaway on the weekend. This weekend we get one on Sunday. Their is also another game that many will love, though it's not for tomorrow.

I really don't understand why so many people are whinging when all this site has ever done is give free games away, thanks to the kindness of some developers and distributors. With respect to using Facebook etc, it's a way to spread the word. The more community members we have, the more games we will get because the greater the number of community members, the more chance Alawar, Immanitas, Playrix and others will get sales from the community.

Reply   |   Comment by Suzanne  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

Suzanne
I think the problem why so many are whinging about this is because this game is offered for free on other game websites. If the game was a paying one say from BigFish or Alaware, then maybe offer the 100 free codes.

................................Moderator comment................................

The game is still a commercial game. It may be given away free from sites such as Gametop, but there is usually a price to be paid. The owners of Gametop and other free game sites such as MyPlayCity and TooMky Games, have to pay the developers of the games money to be able to give the games away free. What the sites get in return is advertising income from every visit made by a person. It's the reason why, when you shut a game down from one of those sites your browser is opened to the free game site's home page. That guarantees them some income. There are ways to disable this hijacking, but then you are breaking the agreement made when you download the game. If everyone disabled the hijacks, the free game sites would soon close down.

The games that the giveaway team have included in the code giveaways may not be expensive games, but they are still sold via most game distributors. You won't get possible home page hijacks, browser changes, toolbars or your browser opening every time you close a game down if you get one of the keys that are being given away. I think most community members would prefer a giveaway game, or one of those keys to getting the game from MyPlayCity, Gametop ot TooMky Games as well as other free game sites.

I choose not to enter the giveaway because I have more match three games than I need. I think those that are whiners and complainers should just delete the bookmark and leave the site for the rest of us. Not one of us is helping the site admins get these free games, not one of us is paying them for their time or their servers. If you are, indeed, the type to b!t*h about a free meal (or game), p***off and let the grown ups stick around.

I appreciate all this site does for it's unappreciative users and the developers and game sites that choose to share a game they could have made money on with us. This is a privilege, folks, so if you don't like it, leave and stop making complaints. They obviously didn't have a free game and instead offered you an alternative out of their good nature. Be thankful.

So now GOTD is a contest site? We have to WIN a copy now? ...deleted - inappropriate for this site...... has happened to this site?
Considering that a lot of the latest "giveaways" have been pretty lame, at least the ones in between the usual "partition" , computer optimization", or various "formatting" offers. A lot of them are turning into nothing but "trial" versions, or crippleware.
Sadly, this site is only a shadow of itself now. I can't remember the last "offer" I actually downloaded.
I think it's time to forget about GOTD and GGOTD. It's been fun. Maybe those that run this site will wake up and remake it what it used to be.

Why not require visits to your sponsors to help pay for your free programs. I am not lucky nor do I have time to return to play a game I MAY? win. Bad move GOTD.

If these continue in this fashion I will just take the site off my bookmarks, not interested in "completing tasks" to have a small chance to win a 5 year old game.
The point of this site was giveaways for all, if you don't have any, I'd rather see none that day than this silliness. Stick to what you're good at.

To use a famous quote "all good things must come to an end or change for the worse". Sadly that has happened with GOTD. First the site changed to reverse chronological order and a different look, then you had to give an email to get a download link. Now you have to win a lottery/content. I'm not going to jump through a lot of hoops for a low probability of winning a game I may never play anyway. In the future I'll check here and if it's an actual giveaway, I'll check it out. If it's a contest, I'm outta here without even reading the comments. If it's a contest enough times in a row, then I will eventually stop checking here.

I wouldn't mind using a disposable email address as was suggested above if it's just a mattering of entering it once, but the only options above all involve what looks like more hoops to jump through than just entering a email address. It was fun while it lasted. We have lots of match 3 and hidden object games courtesy of past giveaways which seemed to be about 90% of the games given away which shows that these software developers attach the least value to match 3 and HOG. They are still fun for certain people.

So is this "contest" format the new format here, or is this a one-off? I do fully understand that the giveaways were a gift, and fully appreciate them and was fine with giving an email addy in exchange for the weekend fun! But not for an iffy contest. I'm certainly not angry (they don't owe us anything, guys!) but just disappointed that I won't have my weekly "rush to GGOTD to grab the latest before the rush" :). Luckily, the recent Fruit Lockers Reborn and Rainbow Web are still keeping me busy.

I'm pissed. They used to offer the full versions of various software for us to give the contributors valuable feedback and suggestions. THAT was the deal. We give honest info that a lot of companies pay lots of money to get and we would get a fully functional (NOT CRIPPLEWARE or TRIAL) versions. AND we ARE getting LITE versions lately and crippleware also. We were promised FULLY FUNCTIONAL VERSIONS to fully assess. How do we do that when some parts of the software are turned off. I feel ripped off. The versions they have been offering lately I can get free to try or even free LITE versions off of a thousand sites without all this hassle of trying to "win" a copy.
Now we have to get LUCKY? You don't win then it sucks to be you? Yes, I am pissed off because I feel betrayed by GGOTD and GOTD.

I enjoy the free games and play them a lot, but creating a bunch of fake social media accounts I'd never use for almost no chance of winning a game license is the same as saying it's a NO-gamegiveawayoftheday, today. It's not even a do-this-get-game, it's do-this-don't-get-game, anyway.

Because GGOTD is making us all jump through hoops to "WIN" a copy and this seems to be the "new and improved" GOTD is going to be. After all the years of being a mutally beneficial partners; we get a FULLY FUNCTIONAL VERSION, and we would give honest constructive feedback. We're all pissed off and feel betrayed.
This is after the BS of having to use FACEBOOK to get a copy and completely annoy my FB friends with constant posts about the latest GOTD. I guess GOTD is in dire straights and is beginning to sell out.
I'll go back to using Download.com for free or lite software. At least we don't have to "win" a copy.

Went to MyPlayCity and downloaded this game. Just wanted to say READ every screen when installing and uncheck nearly everything. Then the game seems to play just fine. Pretty good game for their regular $3.00 price ( but it's always free at Brentnor's quoted site).
Dear friends at GGOTD, please just say "No give away today, but you can enter to win one of 100 Steam lifetime licenses to this game if your interested." There is no game give away today. Period. You don't owe us a game. You have given us many great games. Thank you. That said, you have to know better than to present this in the confusing way it is presented. I never "enter to win" anything anymore. Just grew up and stopped believing in hopes that seldom or never came true. Easier to get what I want other ways. Sure get them sooner.
Love your work. Thanks for your efforts. I'm sure this will be a one time learning experience. Please don't let the haters get your goat. Goats cost too much now -a-days for that.

Ok call me slow. I don't understand. Can I download a trial? Or what? I haven't figured out the emails I keep getting about the keys. I have no problem sharing this site with everyone I know. It is a great site. I am not a tweeter, nor do I really want to be. So that is several keys I can't get? I"m sure eventually I may figure all this out. (i hope) this is the highlight of my weekends seeing what GGOTD has to offer. So I guess if someone makes me a picture lol I will understand.

Seen a post a month or so ago saying the new site would not get many good games because of it, looks like it was right as now you have to win, maybe a good name for the new looking site should be WinAgameOfTheDay.
It was such a good place, I'll miss it.....

I already have this one so that is one less entry in the give-away. :-)

Thanks give-away-of-the-day team, I have enjoyed all the games thru these many years. I even have gone to the various game developers sites and purchased - gasp! - other games.

I think it's great that we have the opportunity to win "keys" to the games to keep and use.

I look forward to the next actual give-away to all, whenever it appears.

I can't understand why so many people are getting mad over this. If you were paying a subscription for games and this appeared then you have a perfect right to complain but usually the games are free, no registration, no hassle, if you like it keep it, if you don't like it delete it or don't download it in the first place.
Businesses have a choice on how to run their business - GOTD, which is a business, have chosen to move from a free to everyone to '100 copies only' - that is their choice decided on by their decisions for their business. My choice is to not bother entering this and if it continues I won't visit the site anymore and I'll get my games from elsewhere ... as I do with most games anyway, the games on here are usually just filler games for a few mins of fun with the odd exception.
I notice I already have this game either from a previous GOTD or from elsewhere - it is not a game I would have paid significant money for as it is an average match 3 game so it is (or has been) available free or dirt cheap somewhere else if you are willing to look for it

I surely give it a try with the chances I can - I don't use all of this ways we can get chances but no problem.

Maybe I'll win a license - one can never know.

I sure would prefer to get the game without this but hey - free is free - and that's enough for me.

I am not afraid of cookies or whatever everyone is whining about. The world moves forward and we can move with it or live a life complaining. I choose to be a bit more modern and I trust the team here.

I use a lot of much more suspicous pages for various things and had never a problem with my system - this gives me enough confidence to handle whatever occurs.

Wishing you a nice weekend WhiteRabbit - one without a lot of moderation this time as it seems ;-)

Thanks to the Game give away of the day team for being here for us.

Good morning Whiterabbit .
Is there another place were we can find the game ( for free of course ) .
With only 100 license keys , our chance to win the game is very limited .

P.S.
Given the opportunity , I would like to thank the Gamegiveaway team and
especially you for the great job you are doing . ;-)

I replied to this post approx. 11hrs ago, saying this game is free at MyPlayCity, for which Joe and Jedi Geg thanked me for, this post has now been removed. Can I ask WHY?

Probably the most obvious reason. You offered an alternative without
a comment. I like your post, but they don't like that.
Funny how they originally posted it, but then removed it. Must have
been a supervisor came on shift and squashed it.

Thanks for the reply, will bear that in mind for the future, would help if a post was removed an explanation was given, it just seems daft, as Joe & Jedi's comments have been given a - on 'useful comment' due to the fact that the post they are replying to was removed. Also Brentnor posted the following, This game is free everyday at MyPlayCity. So why all the hoopla? Post not removed.

I did reply to your post earlier, and again it has been deleted, so will just say thank you, and hope this does not get deleted.

I don't delete comments unless they are totally inappropriate, and then I'll usually leave a comment to the poster to tell them why their comment has been removed.

I don't like the way trying to win/get this game. Give away my e-mailadress to all: no thanks for the expected spam from all the adresses.

............................Moderator comment..............................

Use a disposable email. once you've won a key (assuming you do), dump the email. no spam. That said, I'm sure the giveaway team do not sell on emails.

I have appreciated the games I have gotten from GOTD in the past. I am not going to get mad over losing something that was pretty much a gift anyway. But I sure am not going to promote the situation as it is now. Sorry to see it head this way, it was good while it lasted.

Whiterabbit, my hat is off to you for sticking through all this. Don't know how you do it.

Hi Gina,

It has become increasingly difficult to get free games from developers and distributors, so the giveaway team have had to come up with ways to increase the number of community members; hence the Facebook links, but you don't have to use Facebook (For those who don't want to give out emails or use a Facebook account, there's no need. You just click the Facebook button, then cancel it and the download button appears as always.)

The game houses such as Alawar, Immanitas and Playrix Entertainment only give games away because they know a certain number of community members will visit their sites and probably buy other games. For them giving away thousands of licenses to community members who wouldn't have purchased the game anyway is no loss, but the return for giving those games away can be very good. We've been getting free games for almost 10 years now, and continue to get free games. the team are just trying some novel ways that may or may not work, but they have to try. We are still get free games (even though we don't have one today (It's been ages since we last missed a weekend), and even though the look of the site has changed, we still don't have to pay anything except a little time.

I loved the look of the old site and I really don't like the new look, but I'm still happy to help out so long as there are people who want to read my reviews. :)

Hi Stephen, problem is this whole gratitude 'thing' (sorry if that sounds tad sarcastic) is running pretty thin, especially of late.. and what You poignantly try to remind folk surely refers to these Giveaway Sites (both) that were once grand, unique, clever, generous, and yet.. humble? (yes, appreciation goes both ways, doesn't it) Sadly what replaced it (in Your kind words: 'the team are just trying some novel ways that may or may not work, but they have to try'..) - lacks any basic rules of hospitality and welcoming manner (even if You are in this aspect 'last man standing', has to be said). What's more, one grumble, or wrong comment and you're in the hands of that bouncer at the door.. Sad, isn't it! They say: If things change - find a new way! To which I would add: only if you believe in something?.. I truly wish this Community and Your efforts here Whiterabbit all the best! Please feel free to drop me a line at any free time to: ...deleted.... (my address for comments on both sites)

I would reply fully, but it's really late and i need to go to bed - I've deleted the email, no need to actually post it because I can see everyone's email by the side of their comment (in admin mode). Will email you.

Thank you Whiterabbit. Having the additional information makes a huge difference. I think Fran has a point about the hospitality/welcoming manner. Something along the lines of "We don't have a game to give away today but we have scored 100 free Steam Keys so we are running a lottery" would have gone a long way. For me at least it would have changed the tone from "you need to just tolerate whatever we give you" to "we value you, acknowledge we are changing things, and want you as part of the journey."

Having you do the reviews puts a personal face on it and that has been a huge boon to them. Showing that in the presentation of the game, I think, would score them more returning community members. Yes they need more people, but they would want to do what they can to keep the previous community members.

I could of course be talking nonsense in regards to the current game buying demographic. I am old school "around before there was an internet." My old school attitudes is what drives me to actually care about things I have been involved in for years, like giveawayoftheday.com. The ones that have grown up with social media could have a different way of seeing things and what I suggest wouldn't matter to them at all. :)

Hi Gina, I agree as well. It would have been nice to have had an explanation.

I never thought GOTD would stoop to this click baiting. I'm so disappointed.
Of course I block 3rd party cookies. It's called safe browsing. No clicks for me to maybe win a game.

....................................Moderator comment............................

There's no click baiting involved, the giveaway team have secured activation codes for 100 copies of the game. Those that win those copies will receive permanent copies which can be installed at any time instead of the usual restrictions we get with the game giveaways. That said, this particular game is cheaper than a cup of coffee from one of the many coffee houses around the globe, so I won't be bothering to win a key (that said, I already have one; bought it last year when it was released on Steam).
