Great Alchemist
In Brief
Great Alchemist is a match three game with an un-timed and timed mode. Becomes very difficult from around level 12 onward.
Great Alchemist is a match three game with two modes a times mode and a continuous mode. The timed mode comprises of 30 levels. The boards look quite simple and relatively small, but once you get to around level 12 onward the levels are really hard to beat. I spent a good half hour on level 12 and 13 and still haven't been able to pass level 14. The reason; there are several crystal types represented by different shapes and colours. Along the right side of the board it tells you how many of each color you have to collect to end the level. A timer in the form of a bar with three skulls next to these crystals starts to empty. If you manage to complete the level before the bar passes any of the skulls you are awarded three skulls; as the bar empties this will change to two skulls, one skull and finally no skulls. If the bar reaches the bottom, the level ends and you have to start from the beginning of the level again. The first few levels are easy; (I completed the first level in a matter of seconds), and you can easily gain all three skulls for the next several levels; however, as you progress it gets increasingly difficult to score three, two or even one skull.
There are power ups that can aid you by either removing various crystals from the board or stopping the timer for a short time (around 10 seconds). The blue flask will destroy all the crystals in the vertical and horizontal column it is located in. The orange flask will destroy the eight crystals surrounding it (unless it is located along one of the edges) and the purple flask stops the timer for approximately 10 seconds. Once you pass the first few levels blocking squares are included (they look like green slime). You can get rid of these either by creating matches next to them or using either the blue or orange flasks; that is, so long as the blocking tile is within the bounds of the flasks destructive zone. There are two other flasks available, i.e. another blue flask (in the shape of a round bottomed chemistry flask) and multicoloured flask. These are indicated under the crystal counters. These two flasks are specific to the level free mode (at least as far as I got in the timed mode (i.e. level 14). The multicolored flask is used to destroy all the crystals of one colour randomly. The blue flask extends the life of the level by one minute. To be able to use either of these power ups, when one appears on the board, click on it and it will be transferred to the counter to be used at your leisure. The blue flask seemed rather pointless on the level free mode and would have been much more useful on the timed levels especially in the later levels where time is of the essence; maybe they do appear in later levels, but as mentioned in the conclusion, I spent two hours trying to pass level 14. and never saw either of these two flasks. Along the top of the board you can see your score, the timer and the level number. There are achievements available for various things such as unlocking the purple (Mandrake) flask
Conclusion
I quite enjoyed playing this until i got to level 12; which took me almost half an hour to win, then another half hour passing level 13. I then spent another 2 hours trying to get past level 14 with no success. I managed to almost complete the level several times, with only a few crystals needed, but each time failed at the last moment. In the end it became very frustrating. I may return to it occasionally just to see if I can progress, but at this time well over three hours of game play for me is quite enough. I usually only play arcade games as an intermission between more intensive AAA games.

John McKeown,

Hi John, the actual links are okay, It's the coding I've used. There must be a mistake somewhere. I've used the same HTML code for each link, which explains why none of them are working. I've listed the gamers with the hyperlink next to each game. They should work. :) Sorry for the inconvenience. Never had that issue before. . I don't have time to replace all of them at the moment.

and just for you:

Some of the games I originalluyy listed have since reverted to paid for, however the following are still free.

Paladins: Champions of the Realm Bundle - (free to play hero shooter with some dlc free)
Drawful 2 - (the game of terrible drawings and hilariously wrong answers! ) (also available via Steam)
World War Z - (four-player cooperative third-person shooter featuring massive swarms of zombies)
Figment - (explore a unique surreal universe filled with music, humor and multi layered narrative)
Tormentor x Punisher - (twin stick shooter)
Delenns Steam thread
Delenns Non-Steam thread
Indie Gala

100 Orange Juice - (anime board game with SP, Coop and multiplaer options)

Uni - (indie action mini games - multi genre)
Project Mercury - (a 2D retro platformer)
Nephise Begins - (a first person casual walking sim)

Whiterabbit-uk, hi .
What happened to the second game that was given today ?

Reply   |   Comment by JEDIGEG  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

JEDIGEG,

Hi G, I think it was removed after I'd posted the issue with the fatal error. One of the giveaway technicians must have tested it and found the same issue, so it has been temporarily removed. If you downloaded Bad Girl from February, it's very similar. hopefully it will be offered once the issue has been sorted. :)

Write a 5x typo Alhcemist instead of Alchemist, not to notice it all the time, you must have a great resistance to your work.

JardaH,

No I just hate seeing a word spelled incorrectly. We all know the correct spelling is Alchemist not Alhcemist.

I could not get the game to work either. If you try to move a gem, it won't stay and it won't match. Not sure why. Any advice? Just doesn't work at all. Thanks

The game downloaded to my PC but it contained a virus. Please check the file for malware.

davisg,

Hi DavisG, Thank you for taking the time to comment; however, there is no virus infecting today's giveaway. What your anti malware suite is indicating will be a false positive. The game includes a Falcoware installer that contains low level adware. What I mean by low level is that it 'does not' install any adware to your system. The adware is self-contained within the Falcoware installer that is in the installed games folder. Whenever you boot the game up via the Falcoware installer (The red and white shortcut), you get an advert for another game showing in the installers window; this takes about 20 to 30 seconds. Once the game actually starts there are no other adverts shown. When you close the game down, your browser will open the distributors home page. Both the initial advert and the re-direction earns the developer and the distributor money. This has become the most popular way of giving away games. Most of the games on sites like Falcoware, MyPlayCity, Gametop, TooMky Games and others are still commercial games that are sold via other sites like Gamehouse, GameFly, Alawar, Big Fish and others; however, the developer can earn a lot more money by allowing their games to be given away to the consumer for free than from sales of the games from commercial sites. No personal information is taken from your computer via these games. They are to all intents and purposes safe to download and install.

The giveaway team have been giving games away regularly since 2006 and have never given away a game infected with malware. They test every file placed on their download servers with several anti malware suites just to be sure.

The setup file for this game is very small because it is not the game, but a downloader of the actual game installer that it runs it for you. After the install the game folder is 157 MB. I noticed that one of the files is a DirectX 9 installer, so I guess if you don't have DirectX it would then install that for you too.

As for the game itself, the description above implies there is a story behind this, but there wasn't. It just goes straight into a very primitive match 3 game with no story and no explanation of what you are trying to achieve. Unlike most (all?) other match 3 games I've played, this will get itself into a state where there are no possible moves to make a match. It does not scramble so you can continue, you have to click the replay button and start the level again.

I got bored after 3 levels.

Thanks for the game, but I think I'll give this one a pass.

I had the same problem yesterday with the 404 error. I still appreciate all of the time and effort you use in reviewing etc.

Thanks

HisSon,

Hi HisSon, check the hyperlinks at the end of the review. I've stripped off the HTML code for now; they should work. Sorry for the inconvenience.

HisSon,

Hi Dave, I found the issue. It wasn't immediately obvious until I stripped the hyperlink and the name of the game away. Basically I'd used ”” instead of "" to surround the hyperlink. Very subtle change but Simplz, lol Problem now fixed and all today's links are working. :)

Have been trying in both timed and free mode.
I can't move a single item to make a match. The game reverts my move every single time.
Guess there's something wrong with it. Don't want to spend time figuring out what.
