Galactic Story:
Galactic-Story-001

Galactic-Story-002
In Brief:
Galactic Story is a top-down vertical scrolling bullet hell space shooter.

The Game:

A simple Space Shoot Em Up with the usual elements to this type of shmup (SHoot eM UP) i.e., upgradable ships by destroying the oncoming waves of ships. picking up the odd upgrade dropped by some of the destroyed enemy ships. Some bonuses accumulate a devastating bomb that can destroy every ship on the screen. The end of a level culminates in a boss fight.

There's no indication as to how many levels there are and there's no profile to create, though there is a high score screen, but even when I managed to score, it was never shown in the high score, which remained at zero when I rebooted the game.

There are three ships to choose from at the beginning of the game; each ship has a different firing pattern, which you can see when you scroll through them using the left and right arrow keys. There are two indicators, the left-hand indicator tells you how much health your ship has, and the right-hand indicator shows whether you've got earned enough to use a devastating bomb that destroys all enemy ships on the screen (I didn't check to see if it worked on the boss ships). There are three small squares attached to the right-hand indicator, which I think indicate the number of lives you have left. Though I'm not sure about this. The first time I played it I died three times before the restart screen popped up, but didn't notice the boxes initially; however, thereafter only one box was 'blocked out' even when I closed the game down and rebooted.

You can see the key bindings or controller buttons via the third images. Galactic Story is probably better played with a controller as opposed to a keyboard.

You can see a video of game play HERE.
Conclusion:
Overall, an enjoyable game though it's pretty basic, still it's better than some Shmup's I've played in the past. Graphics are old school. I wouldn't say it's a true bullet hell game as it was relatively easy to avoid most bullets unlike some bullet hell shooters, especially some of the Japanese shmups I've played and which I love.

This is another of those games I prefer to play during a short break from more involved AAA games. If you like shmups but aren't too fussy, then this is probably worth downloading.
Notes on Security
I scanned a zipped copy of the installed game using Virus Total and it found zero hits from 65 antimalware engines. You can see a scan of the installed game HERE

Problem with my ancient graphics. Throws a Direct 3D compiler error. The module may be upgradeable, or may be the Direct 3D module included with the program. Or both.

Anyway, thanks GGOTD, Falco, ,VHMStudios, Itch. And thanks, as always, for the informative comments, WR, and Jason. And thanks for those other SHMUPs listed guys.

mediaman(watcher)13,

Hi Watcher, many of those abandonware shmups should work on your computer. Many date back to the 1980's and 90's. Also those found over on Caimans. I bet you can get most if not all of them to work. Since Rudy died over a decade ago, there has been no new games added to the site. It was kept live by Rudy's family in memory of him because of the tireless work he had done accumulating the thousands of games from virtually every genre of arcade game.

Downloaded and installed without a problem .
It works just fine under Windows XP .
The game starts in windowed mode .
Minimal options .
Just On/Off settings .
Arrow keys for movement (YES !!!) , Space key for shooting (NOoooo) .
Tried to play the game but failed .
I always use my left hand for the arrow keys and the mouse for shooting .
So , I had to cross my hands in order to play the game .
That was a little bit uncomfortable , but I could get used of it if I'll spent some
time on the game .
From the little time I've played the game , it looks like fun .
Especially if you like shmup games .
I will surely come back to it .

One last thing .
The game crashes when I press "Quit" .
The same thing happened with yesterdays game ,
when I've pressed "Exit" .
Not a real problem , just weird .

-----------------------
My PC Specifications :
Windows XP Pro 32bit ,
Intel Core2Duo E8500 3,20Ghz ,
4 Gb memory (DDR 2) ,
NVIDIA GeForce GTX460 768Mb .

This game is actually a pretty fun game to sit down with for a half hour or maybe more despite it's simplicity in game. The fact that the game has controller support is a plus in my book. And the graphics are fairly decent as well respecting the old days of retro games.

One drawback about today's game is controller implementation is not fully there. Although the main game is playable, you'll need to use the keyboard to continue your game otherwise a timer counts down and eventually goes to the main menu.

They could have at the very least implemented button support for that screen that pops up as they did a beautiful way of presenting the controls on the screen although there is a spelling error on the word Movement.

If you are looking for some decent Bullet Hell Shooters try Castle of Shikigami 2 on Steam:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1556650/Castle_of_Shikigami_2/

Also worth mentioning is Caldarius Blaze:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/386770/Caladrius_Blaze/

Some of the lighter ones include the Gunbird Series, and the Strikers 1945 Series which are all on Steam.

Fun fact - XS Games which had some of their classics listed on Steam at one point had give gamers in the USA true bullet hell releasing Gunbird 1 as Mobile Light Force with severely cut out content and Castle of Shikigami 1 was released as Mobile Light Force 2 and did badly at the localization of the game. Thankfully these games are no longer subject to localization embarrassment and can be played in their original form on Steam.

Overall a must check out on this game today, especially if you have an XBOX Controller.

sailorbear510 aka Jason,

Thank you for your feedback Jason, also the heads up on Castle of Shikigami 2; I didn't know the developer had released a sequel to the original Castle of Shikigami which you can find HERE (it's half the price of the sequel).

Caladrius Blaze is an excellent shmup and was on sale with 85% off over the Black Friday sales. I highly recommend it, but if you are thinking of buying it, I'd wait until the Christmas Steam sale where it will likely be repeated at 85% off again. The Christmas sale starts in fifteen days from December 22nd - to January 5th.

Space shooters are one of my favourite arcade genres; over the years I've been here I've posted several threads over in the giveaway forums listing many of the games from my favourite genres, including Shmups. With that in mind, check out an old space shoot em up thread from several years ago over in the giveaway game forums that lists lots of free and commercial (mainly on Steam) Shmups HERE.

Also, when I used to post regular freebies over in the game discussion forums, I posted links to a free retro shmup some years ago HERE; i.e. a game called Hypersuper Cannon on the Good Games to Grab thread Week 237. Plus, you'll find 32 pages (467 games to choose from) of abandonware shmups; many of which are retro shmups from various consoles HERE. A lot of them will require various emulators to work, but those are easily found on the net and in my opinion are well worth the effort. There's nothing like some of those retro shooters from days gone by. :)

You can find several space shooters on most of the free game sites that most of the giveaway community are familiar with, such as our friends over on MyPlayCity e.g. Airforce Missions, Alien Riposte, Cosmic Jumble, Cosmic Proof, Dark Orbit, Galaxy Battles, Galaxy Guard, Helicopter Game, Last Pilot Vs Machine Aliens, Mars Rescue, Sky Goofers and Space Courage. Also on Toomky games e.g., Air Conflict 1 & 2, Alien Intruders, Invasion, Space Shoot, Space Robot, Stellar Interface and Super Shooter.

Gametop is another free game site that has been operating for around 18 years and has some excellent shmups, e.g. Star Defender 2, 3 & 4, Alien Wars, Air Assault, Desert Hawk, Star Sword, Deadly Stars, Galaxy Strike, Air Attack, RIP 3, Dark Matter, Star Gunner, Big Air War, Helicopter, Critical Damage, Shoot'n'Scroll, Star Shooter, Tachyon Project, Star Rage, Submarine vs Invaders, Annihilator Retro Classic, Alien Terminator Deluxe and Gal-X-E

There are other free game sites such as FreeGamePick and you'll find some shmups free on Steam as well. There's a shmup wiki that lists hundreds of free to play Space shooters in alphabetical order HERE and over 550 free Shmups (Space invaders, shmups and space shooters) and Space over on Caimans HERE, HERE and HERE.

I used to pay $19.99 for many of my arcade games prior to the financial crisis back in 2008, when the price of casual arcade games crashed. Some of the titles above such as the Star Defender series I paid almost $60 for the three mentioned above; which you can now get for free and others like Alien Wars and RIP 3 (an arena shmup). You can fide all three of the RIP series as a trilogy for £3.99 on Steam HERE.
