Introduction
Forest Legends: The Call of Love is a satisfactory fairy tale with some genuinely enjoyable puzzles. The narrative is a clichéd affair, depicting forbidden romance, the call to adventure, parental confusion, and grand destiny; it’s very much a Disney movie mixed with Romeo and Juliet. Nevertheless, the fantastical setting and quirky conundrums will prove more than enough to keep you playing.
You adopt the role of a human princess who has fallen head over high-heels for a were-cat, a race which the uprights are at war with. After being caught meeting with your fluffy lover, your father shoots and wounds the flashy feline, forcing him to flee into the forest. Back at your castle, the punctured pussy puts in an appearance, and it’s from there that your quest truly begins.

At its core, this game is all about gathering items and solving puzzles – and it succeeds in that area. The point-and-click mechanics are intuitive, the brainteasers are considerately designed, and a well implemented hint system keeps you moving forwards. Unfortunately, the title is plagued by horrendous voice acting. While the narrator sets the scene fairly well, you’ll shudder at the protagonist and her lover’s lines. Worse still, the animation is awful, as inoffensive art is contorted to show character emotion.
Fortunately, the background sketches are much more agreeable. Beautifully crafted vistas peppered with dark forest paths and clearings look incredible, and visibly sheen with particle effects and slick lighting. You’ll spend the majority of your time inspecting these images, too, as you click on objects and search for things to interact with. Each location feels alive due to the above mentioned sparkles and subtle wildlife animations. It’s all rather absorbing.
You’ll happen upon many environments as you work your way through the game, with each chapter introducing a new locale made up of several scenes. Cracking the puzzles you’ll find in these is a case of searching each area for items, and then using what you’ve found. For example, you may uncover a key to pop in a chest, or gems and crests that need to be added to other objects as part of a thread of challenges. The solutions are seldom convoluted or illogical: once you’ve fully examined a puzzle, you’ll know exactly how to solve it. And if you’re still stuck, there’s a handy hint system to help you.

For starters, if you don’t click on anything for a while, the game will highlight any artifacts of interest that you may have overlooked. If that doesn’t work, then you can summon your baby dragon companion, who will breathe a circle of fire onto the screen showing you where to search. Your reptilian accomplice will need to rest once you’ve used him, but if you find a floating ball of fire, you can skip this cool down period. Of course, if you plump up for the ‘Advanced’ difficulty tier, you’ll get no tips whatsoever.
Regardless, approximately four hours after starting the adventure, it’ll all be over – and considering the price point, that’s a bit unfortunate. There is a bonus chapter set several years after the events of the main story, and while this will allow you to prolong your quest just a little longer, you will have to put up with more ear-shattering voice acting throughout.
Forest Legends: The Call of Love is a short but solid point-and-click adventure. Its story is nothing new, its character animations are atrocious, and the voice actors will assault your ears at every opportunity – but there are enough fun puzzles and beautiful vistas stored within here to make the call of love just about worth answering.

Don't forget to check out the Epic game store for the latest freebie on offer HERE. The latest freebies from Epic include two games: Kingdom Come: Deliverance a first person story-driven open-world RPG that immerses you in an epic adventure in the Holy Roman Empire. (a AAA game not suitable for children) and Aztec a unique hybrid of beat 'em up and turn-based strategy, set in the world of the Aztec Empire. You can play the game Last Year an online pvp cooperative atmospheric violent first person horror based game for free until 17th Feb (PM) HERE. Don't forget to check out Delenns thread over in the Game Discussion forums for details of other free games and offers HERE. From now on I will regularly recommend a game worth checking out at the end of my reviews (not every giveaway). It may be on sale via Steam, or elsewhere, or may be a classic released anytime over the last 30 years. It will definitely be a game I've invested some time in myself and think is well worth checking out. My very first recommendation is for the game Barotrauma a 2D submarine game where you can play either single player or with friends to survive the under water sea on the ice moon Europa that circles Jupiter. I've only just bought this particular game, but its one that actually sent shivers down my spine when I first played it. It's still far from complete, but is looking good and the developers are dedicated; the legacy version was and may still be available for free, but the early access version that has been updated is available with a 34% discount until tomorrow afternoon via Steam. You can see the Barotrauma Wiki HERE, with more information HERE and HERE; it promises to be a big game once completed, with custom community content available.

I encountered a gamebreaking crash near the end of the game!

When i click on ANY of the arrows of a riddle in the "Proving Grounds behind the unlocked Mirror, to create a new World", the game crashes under any circumstance.

Played up to that Point on Windows 7. Encountered the crash. Imported the savegames on Fedora Workstation Linux 31. Opened the Game with wine. The game crashes in wine when clicking on the arrows mentioned, same crash!

It would be very much appreciated if anyone could provide a savegame shortly after this riddle, so i can at least complete the game.

Burni, I'm having the same problem in windows 10, 64 bit, i7. I'll try the skip.

Burni, thanks so much. Glad I stopped last night just before I entered that portal. My game also crashed when I attempted the mirror puzzle. When I restarted, I just waited for the skip button to fill and moved on. LL

That's definitively a bug. One need to wait until the skip button is fully loaded, then you can proceed.

I had no trouble installing and running the program and I was enjoying the play. I was reaching the end and all of a sudden it shut down. There is a puzzle where you have to move some tiles into position - with arrows around the outside... I tried it a couple of times and each time I clicked on an arrow it closed the game.
I was fun up to that point - quite simple for the most part - I only asked for help once when I didn't know what to do.

Thanks WhiteRabbit for the fun games. I certainly look forward to my weekend mornings to see what is on offer!

D/l'd and installed fine on Win 8.1, though the download was pretty slow today. Enjoyable fun; I like that instead of just finding random objects, you solve puzzles. Not the hardest game (kids can do it) but a pleasant afternoon and well worth downloading as a change from the usual.

Big game (1908 MB) - long download (10 min) - difficult activation (needs to stop the antivirus for 10 min). Played the game for 10 min (Win 10 64-bit).

And immediately fell in love with this cute baby dragon. I want one baby dragon now :-)

Thanks.

OK, that bit made me think this just might be the Sharknado of giveaways. MUST TRY.

Thank you so much for offering this game for testing.

I have enjoyed the magical aspect of the game as well as the puzzles that are different from the regular ones.
I sort of grew weary of the potion making and the girl who has to save her supernatural fiance all the time. There was a lack of interaction.
I also didn't think giving the guy a Russian (?) accent adds anything to the story.
However, the graphics are beautiful and there is quite a lot to do.
Just wished the story was a little better.

As a family friendly site, the 1st paragraph of Greg Giddens review could have been removed without taking anything away from it. No condemnation, just an observation.

Sid,

Hi Sid, I only skim read the review before I added it, so didn't quite twig the initial content. You are right, so I deleted the first paragraph as there really was nothing of value to add to the review. Thanks for pointing that out.

"Failed to launch the program." I have *no* anti-virus installed at the moment so that ABSOLUTELY cannot be the problem... (yes, I CTRL-ALT-DEL'ed and checked running programs and services and there is no anti-virus or anything similar running).
Happens every time the giveaway is this large. The wrapper just doesn't seem to be compatible with my system or something...

Trying 2 B Helpful,

"Happens every time the giveaway is this large. The wrapper just doesn't seem to be compatible with my system or something..."

I've had that happen in XP -- I think the wrapper unpacks the GOTD into RAM where it runs the setup file, and XP just couldn't handle something that large. If you're running XP, I never could get it to work on larger giveaways with the wrapper. If not, maybe freeing up more RAM by shutting down other processes would help?

So: a HOG that has no hidden object scenes?! By which I mean, no 'junk piles' or the like. Also, a baby dragon as your helper/adviser (similar to the blue cat in Tower of Souls).

If you're a fan of the puzzles — and potion-making — parts of your typical HOG, but get fed up having to find random stuff in yet another messy room, you'll definitely want to try this game!

True, there's no lip-sync in the cut scenes, and some of the voice acting is a bit weird, plus you might find it "text-heavy," but this is (again) another try by Toomky to make a game that isn't quite the usual HOG we all know, so I applaud their continued innovation!
