Fill Up 2:
Fill-Up-003

Fill-Up-004
In Brief:
Fill up 2 is the sequel to Fill Up (obviously) that was given away last week. This time instead of a garage you goal is to create a flourishing city. There are five different locations with six levels per area, each area has a different climate. The basic mechanic is a match three, four or five game using different coloured cars and model to create matches as well as a basic city building game with two modes of play (timed and untimed). Though there are three distinct game types revolving around the match three or more. In some you have an assistant that helps place vehicles for you, other levels you have to place all vehicles yourself. Some levels are times, others are untimed. The timed levels earn you Gold, Silver or nothing depending on how fast you achieve the level goal, which is usually to earn a specific amount of cash before the time runs out. Earning Gold or Silver also awards you extra points.

To earn cash, create matches of three, four and five vehicles of the same colour and type. You get more points by creating complex combos; these are achieved when creating more than one set of matches in one turn. To aid you in this you can use jokers that are earned by creating sets of four or five. There are two types of Joker blue and red. Reds are more powerful. Once you've earned enough cash you can start to build your city by clicking on the central pink piece (looks a little like the pawn in a set of chess pieces) located on the level map. This takes you to the city that you are presently in. You'll see lots of plots hovering over them you'll find out what the building is and how much it costs. The cheapest building costs 30 000, but you can buy plots that contain trees and shrubs for much less ($8400). You can also sell off buildings, but at a loss. You can also replay levels to improve the scores and thus the amount of money earned to enable you to complete your city.

See the introduction below the countdown timer for more details.

Conclusion:
Fill Up 2 is an interesting take on the match three genre with city building as an extra to add to the game. Initially I wasn't impressed, but once I'd figured what to do and progressed through a few levels discovering that there were slightly different takes on the game mechanic, I enjoyed it a little more and decided it was worth keeping. It's not something I'd play for extended periods so would put it in the coffee/teatime bracket of gameplay. You should easily play through the three different styles in a short break. Playing it for extended periods, the game may become a little boring. The graphic is quite dated, but that shouldn't affect the enjoyment you derive from playing it.

I'd score this a 6.4 out of 10 for game play.

Whiterabbit-uk,

Here's some more images, the descriptions of the two remaining match three game mechanics briefly described:

Whiterabbit-uk,

I accidentally deleted the image describing the third mechanic, which you'll see when you get to level 3.

Stuck on level 1. I appreciate Whiterabbit's explanation, but don't quite get it. Since level 1 has no time limit, and no apparent money goal, do I go up to a certain amount and then this mysterious money goal for the level kicks in? I assume not, since WR's explanation seems straightforward. When you think you've gotten enough money, you go back to the level map and then select the middle piece - darker than pink for me, fuschia??? or maybe it's my monitor settings. - in any case, I can't find out how to get back to the level menu. Don't see a save for level 1, replay starts me over on that level, and exit abandons all my progress. Sure, when I go back in I'm at the level map, but I have no money since my progress wasn't saved. I'm sure someone will explain the simple thing I'm missing, but, for me, that's not the point. I shouldn't have to rely on a message board, so to speak, of experienced players for instructions on the basic mechanics of the game. THAT should be completely spelled out in the tutorial or a help section. Strategy should, in some cases, be complex. Basic game mechanics should NEVER be. It shouldn't be a guessing game on how to play a game, or require you to have EVER played a similar type game before.

I'm afraid, to my way of thinking, this is just like it's predecessor. A weird, half baked game that was taken out of the oven way too soon. Also, to me, evidenced by the stop/start music. A little music, then the ALWAYS attractive sound of highway traffic (in case there's any doubt, that was sarcasm), then the music starts up again when it gets around to it. I'll keep it. I'm not short of space at the moment. And maybe someday, if I'm REALLY bored... But, gee, to a veteran game designer this stuff should be common sense!

Thanks anyway, GGOTD.

watcher13,

Similarly confused over level 1. I think level 1 was more a basic tutorial. I'd earned about 22 000 points when the end of level awards popped up. Though it took me a few attempts as I didn't quite understand the concept initially, so was getting to the point where there were no moves left and I was asked to use a joker, but that took a few goes before I got how to use them: basically, through trial and error.
