The Game:
I'll add some information if I get time to play the game. Things have been really hectic over the last few weeks and I've been baby sitting our surviving rabbit most nights; getting very little sleep. Apart from losing his sister two weeks ago, we have to hand feed him every three hours because he can't chew his food due to a benign tumour on his jaw that has displaced the lower jaw enough to stop his teeth from grinding (we have to take him to the vet every three or four weeks to get his teeth cut). We've been hand feeding him like this for almost two years now (he's ten years old); however, since his sister's passing a few weeks ago, we've kept almost constant company with him because rabbits are gregarious/social animals; basically I'm exhausted and just don't feel up to writing anything meaningful about the games we are getting at the moment.

However, I did get some time to play the first few match three boards and found them entertaining. There's nothing really new added to the game, but it does hold it's own with some of the better match three games. I like the story running through the game as well as the two modes of play i.e. timed and untimed. I've posted some of the screen captures I took while plying those levels. There's more images than I usually post, but I thought it would give you a better idea of what's in store. My recommendation, even if you're not a match three fan; download this one, it's worth the effort. I'll certainly be keeping it, at least for a while.

Notes on Security
I scanned a zipped copy of the installed game and it found 3 hits (BitDefenderTheta, VBA32 & Jiangmin) from 61 antimalware engines. (It's nearly always the same ones that give a positive hit, but are almost certainly false positives) The downloaded executable may include some low level adware that only opens your browser to Falcoware's home page after the game has installed and places four shortcuts onto your desktop (which can be safely deleted once the game has installed). The installation does not inject any malware into your system. When your browser is opened to Falcoware's home page when the game has been installed, it earns Falcoware games some money, part of which is given to the developer of the game for allowing the game to be given away free. You can see the results of the scan via the following link:

Whiterabbit-uk,

The latest free games from Epic Games are Nioh: The Complete Edition - Ready to die? Experience the first version of the brutal action game from Team NINJA and Koei Tecmo Games. In the age of samurai, a lone traveler lands on the shores of Japan. He must fight his way through the vicious warriors and supernatural Yokai that infest the land in order to find that which he seeks. Also a giveaway this week is Sheltered, a post-apocalyptic disaster management game that gives a whole new meaning to the term “nuclear family”. Given a head-start over the billions lost in a nuclear holocaust, you must gather as many supplies as possible en route to the concrete underground shelter that will soon become your family home for the foreseeable dreary future.

From next Thursday we will be getting Speed Brawl, a 2D combat-racer about moving fast and hitting hard! Maintain your momentum, build combos, and unleash powerful moves. Find your own fighting style, and assemble the best team of brawlers ever seen. Then do it all again faster. Faster. FASTER! plus Tharsis, a turn-based space strategy game. With dice. And cannibalism. It puts you in control of humanity’s first mission to Mars, just as it’s struck by a micrometeorite storm.
Indie Gala have added more games to their showcase section HERE, e.g. Crazy Space Pirate, Pirate Codex, DreamTime, Project Restart, A Maze In Opportunity, Mirage Online Classic, In the world unknown, Dissociation, The little witch Edwina, Hard Place and another Leisure Suit Larry adventure. All but volumes 6 & 7 have now been removed from the free section.

You can usually find links to Steam and non Steam freebies via Delenn's threads over in the forums HERE (non-Steam) and HERE (Steam).

The latest Humble Choice bundle went live Tuesday afternoon; If you have the original subscription before it changed from the Humble Mothly to the Humble Choice bundle you get the following 12 games plus a DRM free arcade game called Sluggish Morss Pattern Circus.
There are different subscriptions available, all of which can be suspended each month if you don't think the games in the bundle are worth it. This months bundle would set you back £211.68 (approx $290) if you purchased all of the games and includes PGA Tour 2K21 (£49.99), Neon Abyss (£15.99), Not For Broadcast (£19.49}, RÖKI (£19.49), Narita Boy (£19.99), West of Dead (£15.49), Atomicrops (£11.39), Heaven's Vault (£19.99), Swag and Sorcery (£9.99), Fort Triumph (£15.49), Orwell: Ignorance is Strength (£7.19) and Framed Collection (£7.19). For me, just the cost of Swag & Sorcery takes care of the cost of the whole bundle (it cost me £8.72 for the bundle) so I'm very pleased with this months choice, especially as several were on my wish list. The last one I already had, so gave it to a friend.

The extra game is a weird graphic oriented game on the lines of those Amanita Design games such as Samorost 1 (free on Steam) and Samorost 2, Machinarium and Rocket man, but is much more psychedelic and wacky. (If you get the bundle make sure you turn down the volume when playing Sluggish Morss Pattern Circus as it's rather jarring in places, but fits the game.

Have installed but the game does not start after installing or after clicking its desktop icon. Reainstalled. Result is the same. Win 7 Ultimate.

Bascha,

Check the event log immediately after trying to get the game to work. If there are any issues it should be recorded in those logs. Also, check to see if the executable is still present in the games installed folder. It may be that your security software is deleting the game?

I wouldn't call it a big risk, but it is nice that developers are taking some. I'd have snagged it out in the wild had I heard of it since the last feature is enough to be a selling point. Thank you to you and the dev for taking time to post this one. OST needs to be longer, but it is the OST that the world should be aware of. Cheers.

The game installed fine but when I start it the window does not fill the whole monitor screen. There is about an inch across the top and bottom where you can see the desktop and its flashing real fast. Win7 system. Dell monitors. Other games run fine.

I changed the resolution and now its OK except I have no arrow. Tried on two different systems same problem. How do I get the arrow to show up?

Jerry, Perhaps you need to adjust your screen's resolution when playing this particular game.

My comments are based on play through of the first chapter in relaxed mode.

I think Crime Stories: Days of Vengeance has an unusual storyline for a match-3 game. It's styled as a film noir 1950s crime drama in which you're taking down a crime lord's network one mobster at a time. The noir voiceover, jazz, and visuals reinforce the theme.

It's similar to Duskless: The Clockwork Army, which was given away last week. The structure is the same, with a cut scene followed by a series of boards where you acquire enough resources to clear out one of the mobsters' strongholds on the map. It looks like the same game engine with artwork by the same team. And possibly the same voice artists, too.

So far, the resource you need to acquire on the boards is gold. The other game pieces are drugs, weapons, bullets, jewels, and gambling chips. So you might not want this for kids.

In both games, I wish there were a way to quit from the map. You have to load the game board to get access to the menu. And quitting out takes several more steps. Not the best user experience.

In contrast to Duskless, the tutorial is uneven and lacking. There were a few hints at the beginning, and then nothing. No explanation of what the power ups do. In a cut scene, a character mentioned that grenades would be helpful, and a while later, I happened to notice a grenade power up. That's when I realized he'd been talking about an actual thing.

There was no explanation that with each game board, you acquire resources to buy locations on the map. I was already aware of it because it's the same mechanic as in Duskless. Without having played the other game, I might not have thought to click on the tiles that buy the locations.

The hints prompting you to swap tiles are WAY too fast. Sometimes, the hint pops up while the cascade of matches is still running. I find it distracting -- they're not even good suggestions -- and would prefer a longer delay.

(Also: Again with docking stars without stating why.)

This shows what a difference the styling can make to the gaming experience. I loved the ambient music in Duskless, compared to the jazz noir piano and saxophone here. I also prefer that game's steampunk aesthetic to the mid-century casinos and theater lights of Crime Stories.

All said, I am enjoying the story and will probably finish the game. Recommended, especially if you like the noir theme.

tinyearl,

Excellent feedback; thank you for taking the time to post this especially bearing in mind I didn't post a review of the game today, just some screen captures and a very brief thought.

I like the storyline and the music, but wish it could have been in a HOG game. Match 3 games don't keep my interest, even in relaxed mode. Hate timed mode. But I'll keep it.

Very odd ... every time when I try to shut down the music and the sound or put it lower, the program shuts down.
I solved the problem with lowering the computer sound... but shouldn't be that way.
I'm on win10, 64

The game is up my street today so I'll be giving it a try in a minute, but just to say I know all about keeping buns with dental problems going - I had a lovely lad some years ago who needed hand-feeding every few weeks. He lived until nearly 10 years old! Good luck!
