A good game, but it gets a bit repetitive after a while; it's best to take the levels in 10 level chunks at most. The powerup design wasn't the best and some of the levels feel like they take *forever* to finish (especially the ones with cabins), but that's really all the bad I can say. It's not amazing, it's not bad, but I wouldn't pay for it.

The game has a level that looks like it was inspired by Mechwarrior, and that was enough to let it take some space on my computer. :p

Ugh! It was kind of fun, but I went to play it a few minutes ago and it started locking up. The 3-finger salute did nothing, and eventually it blue-screened. Then during the blue screen I heard the video card fan spool up like a jet engine on takeoff. I held down the power button and eventually it turned off.

When I turned it back on, my video was having all sorts of problems. I was getting sparklies - random pixels all over the display being the wrong color & changing. The video card must have severely overheated. It appears to have cooled down now - hopefully there's no permanent damage.

I've uninstalled that game. No more Alawar games for me.

"How do I activate it the right way to make it a full version? Everyone here likes this 2 thumbs up."

Well it's too late for this game, and it's not worth doing for today's game, but I'll tell you anyway:

Step #1 - Unzip folder
Step #2 - Click "Activate".
Step #3 - Click "Setup".
Step #4 - If it's an Alawar game, uninstall it.

You activated it wrong. You still have half an hour left to do it right. (to get full version)

How do I activate it the right way to make it a full version? Everyone here likes this 2 thumbs up.

well, i tried it out on my pc, it's 2.7ghz processor with over a terrabyte of storage, a gig of ram, and should have been able to run it...but the game was very slow and unresponsive, even in window mode.
so i can;t give this one a good rating...in fact, i uninstalled it.
thanks anyways GAOTD...
on a slightly better equipped gaming style machine it probably rawks, but not on mine.
peace.

I saw a comment about someone not liking the moving screen. Different strokes for different folks I guess. I like the moving screen. It enhances the game play in my opinion. My son played through level 12 easily and wished there was an option for faster game play.

I like this game! Sortof similar to Aquaball, but in my opinion, this one is more fun. I like the way the ball moves in this game better somehow. Funny, I thought I was pretty good at it. Then my son got on here and got the maximum points allowed in the first 4 levels, but went way up in points after that. He was able to finish the levels faster too, plus got a bunch of awards. I didnt do that bad, but he showed me that a person doesnt have to lose at it either. The way the ball comes back towards the paddle is more funner also too. Alawar made this game more better than Aquaball, and I still likes Aquaball!

Downloaded, activated and installed. I have a 27" Dell monitor with digital cable connected, ATI X800 XT video card and, set to 1360 x 768. Latest ATI drivers installed. [I know, it's only a below average video card, but I refuse to pay $450 for a good one. This one came with my Dell XPS system.]

Opened and played with no problems.

I like this game. Excellent graphics and game play. Better than the other breakout games from Alawar, IMHO.

crashed my xp system on level 8. I didn't like the moving screen and I would prefer it if I could turn that option off. Other than that, it was pretty cool and better Hyderalloid which was just dull. Still Aquaball is my favourite.

Wow! I am amazed at the production values on this one. It's VERY polished compared to other Alawar games I've tried. Sure, it's a breakout clone, but it has a lot of variety, and the graphics are really good for a budgetware title!

Clearly, a lot of good development went into this game.

My only complaint is that on my Vista system, I have to run it in a window because it dies in fullscreen mode. The only way around this is to enable XP compatibility, which doesn't always result in the game working properly. Otherwise, it's excellent!

After playing this several times since I downloaded it last night (after 12), I wanted to say I LOVE THIS GAME! I'm 57, & it's 1 of the 2 best fun & good-looking games I ever played! I love the graphics! The 3D part of graphics is excellent! :) AND a 6 yr old who was here loves it too!

GREAT game for young & old!

Do keep sound off for kids though! It says a bad word when doesn't get it's way. lol:)
Thanks so much Alawar & GOTD team! :)

There have been several here that have mentioned the "Fatal Error" with only this software. It is odd that it happens. Anyone figure anything out? I have three computers. Installed and ran fine on my laptop, however "Fatal Error" on both my desktops. I doubt the type mattered, but I set the screen resolution to match exact with my laptop, but still had the problem. I can't see any reason for it. Anyone solved the problem?

Dl'ed and installed like butter (smoothly)
The mouse movements seem a little "floaty" but I've dealt with worse.
Probably a keeper, if i can figure out what's going on. Lot's of stuff coming at me in the first couple of stages. Can't imagine all the chaos that will ensue once I get into the tougher stages. This is our first of this genre, so we'll see.
All in all, another fine specimen from Alawar. Thanks GOAD!

2.

Runtime Error !
Program H:/...ROBOBALL/roboball.wrp
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

----------
I have uninstalled - reinstalled - rebooted
Without activation it runs fine - after activation it crashes.
What a pity!

To Mev1296 comment # 34 & 35 & Ric comment 30, regarding the fatal errors you are getting. There were quite a few who got the same problem the first time around. Did you try the fixes I mentioned in my post #5? I did mention that a guy called Marty-R comment #53 from April’s comments….

http://game.giveawayoftheday.com/roboball/#comments (I forgot to post the link this morning)

….spent some time researching what could be the problem and discovered that if you have your screen resolution set at certain settings the game would give a fatal error or crash. He tried setting his screen resolutions differently and discovered that doing this enabled the game to work on some of the resolutions available, however he did not specify which, apart from saying the low and the high settings worked. So, if anyone else gets a fatal error message, try changing your screen resolution first before you give up on the game. :)

You could also try the following fixes and upgrades that may cure the problem:

1) Update your video and display drivers – try the following links for advice and free upgrades

http://www.driverguide.com/
http://www.pctools.com/guides/drivers/

2) Clean out your windows pre-fetch and other caches such as back ups (I described how to do this either yesterday or the day before. Check the software talks section of the giveaway forums because I now post all my reviews, sometimes slightly amended in that particular forum thread. The forums at this point in time seem to be having problems though, and are not accessible. Provided you’ve activated the game and do not uninstall it using the uninstall option, the registry activation code should remain intact, so if you need to delete and reinstall the game, it can be done at any time after the giveaway has ended If you do need to delete the game, just delete the main game folder by dragging it into the recycle bin or right click and delete. If you do use the uninstall file you’ll lose the full version. Here’s the link for later. :

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/forum/8

3) Defragment you drive – go to Start – programs – accessories – system tools
4) Close down and restart your computer
5) Uninstall the present version, go to Alawar’s site and download the version from there then use the activate module, but the setup from Alawar’s site.

http://www.alawar.com/games/roboball/

I do hope you get the game running as it’s worth the effort in my opinion.

Pat # 32; I know what you mean. I bought Vista Home Premium back in September and despite my initial feelings about it, I was beset with countless problems such as most of my essential software such as my version of Nero, as well as loads of games were not compatible with Vista. Also it resulted in me replacing an already new motherboard (MoBo) with the same version (thinking the MoBo was faulty, but then discovered the MoBo had a known issue with Vista despite the manufacturer still claiming that the MoBo was Vista ready). I’ve now lost all respect for the MSI brand name, especially as both MoBo’s cost me a lot of money. Somehow Vista also i messed with my Bios, and stopped both my CD writer/rewriter and my DVD writer/rewriter from being recognised, again despite the DVD (at least) being Vista Ready When in Bios they were shown as installed. I also ended up buying a new DVD writer/rewriter unnecessarily because of this. Anyway, I’ve uninstalled Vista (despite wanting to like it because I do think it has some excellent qualities) and until Microsoft release a workable Service Pack, I won’t be re-installing it. Did you buy a new machine with it already installed or is it an upgrade? I’d certainly consider re-installing XP if it is the latter. :)

=====================================================================================================

Finally With regards to the robot swearing when he/she loses a game. I spent quite some time trying to listen to what the robot was saying and in no way was it like what someone above describes. The word is incomprehensible as far as myself and my wife were concerned, which means you could make it into whatever you wished it to mean (within bounds of course). I doubt Alawar, which is generally a family friendly site would allow such swearing anyway.

Anyway as before I do hope everyone has a most excellent weekend, and may your Christmas shopping be stress free and enjoyable, lol

Hi rabbit, besides some commercial alternatives one could also be interested to look for scaraball (=>google), which is totally free, but calls its homepage after each run. Graphics are great, but skill level is - like you say - lower than in 2D versions.
Enjoy.

Parental warning: When the little robot guy loses a ball, he exclaims "Oh sh*t!" or something very like it. You might not want your five year old running around doing an imitation of him just as your in-laws are walking into the house. . . :-)

I do, as well, but for a different reason. If there's a seperate site for clones - erm, I mean Alawar - then there will be more decent action games for the main site. Clone-lovers get their clones, action-lovers get shooters and platformers - everybody wins.

I don't think that they'd be that brand-specific about it though.

OH BY THE WAY THIS IS WHAT THE ERROR SAID:

Failed to create cube texture (D3DERR_INVALIDCALL: Invalid call)

I have it narrowed down to when I install (Setup.exe) without activating the game works, when I click on Activate.exe to activate this is when I start getting the fatal error as seen above.

Any suggestions?

Activated and installed (in that order) perfectly on my Windows XP SP2 machine, however, when I click on the Roboball icon created on my desktop or the one created in the "Start" menu the program completely freezes and a box pops up that says "Fatal Error...". I have to open Task Manager and click on "End Task" in order to close it. I tried uninstalling, restarting computer, installing, restarting computer, and still the same outcome every time.

Of the SEVERAL games that I have downloaded here in the past SEVERAL months, I have never had a problem until now. In fact this is the FIRST problem that I have ever had on this site. This particular game must not like my computer :) (lol). Something is going on which I seriously hope someone can help me with. I really want this game to add to my "Breakout" collection.

Now don't get me wrong or put words in my mouth. I AM SAYING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING NEGATIVE OR IMPLYING NOTHING NEGATIVE ABOUT GGAOTD OR ALAWAR. Both of you rock. I'm sure it's something about the game that my Windows XP SP2 machine doesn't like. I assume this because Roboball activated perfectly, installed perfectly (in that order), and ran perfectly on my Windows Vista laptop machine which is only less than 2 months old.

If anyone knows how to fix this or has any advice please post.
Thanks again GGAOTD & Alawar
