If i was going to pay $14.95 for something, it would be one of the addon packs for hyperballoid complete[how about giving some of their extra packs away?]

complete and utter senseless pap, arkanoid and dwarves? what was the people who came up with that idea smoking? maybe they should sell that to us instead of this complete and utter stinky donkey turd.

Even free this is an insult to modern gamers, modern technology and to dwarves. I wouldn't be suprised if a small scotsman hasnt already dressed up like gimmly gone around their houses and had sexual relations with their dogs during a very important family dinner in retribution.

I agree with Bovi, Break quest is one of my top five favorites. i would recommend it to anyone who likes breakouts. It's got a lot of replayability as well because you can adjust your power ups (of which there are many). That is turn them on or off, so you can make it as hard or easy as you like. Try the demo. I think double games has it but I'd google it first. lol

@#34 "Dwarfs" is actually the correct plural of dwarf. Dwarves is also correct, there is no spelling or grammar error in the title of this game though.

There are approximately 3 million better variants of this game available, several of which have been given away here earlier. While it's *somewhat* novel to have stuff bouncing off your bat, this is not the first place I've seen it. Nurium's BreakQuest is the best I've seen of the genre, with plenty of innovation, and comes at nearly the same price as this one.

Thanks to everyone for posting their comments and Whiterabbit for the screenshots. I like the "Brave Dwarves" games so the title caught my attention right away, this game has nothing to do with those games though (I now notice it says Dwarfs and not Dwarves, seems kinda shady IMO if they did that on purpose), after reading the comments and reviews you saved me from having to download this. I was also confued by the publishers title "freegames4rest" and CHARGING $14.95 for this? That's an OxyMoron.
Can't vote thumbs up or down since I didn't (have to) download and test it. Thumbs up to everyone who wasted their time and posted their comments on their experiences with it.

I'll still say Thanks to the GGAOTD Team for bringing us free commercial games to play, they can't all be great.

Good morning everyone! ;)

Today's game is of the 'breakout' (one of my favorites!) genre, so it peaked my interest immediately. The zip file downloaded/activated the game and installed well with no issues either during installation or play - on Windows XP pro.

The graphics as most of you know by now, is usually my second comment of the day - as I believe that this aspect (obviously aside from game-play,) is globally important to the enjoyment of the player.

They are simple cartoons (which I have nothing against,) made attractive by their bright colors and differing backgrounds (also very basic.) All the graphics render extremely well in window or full screen mode and have the touch of a very capable graphic artist.

The opening screen reveals explanations of each of the power-ups, bonuses and anti-bonuses. Some of them have been seen before in other games, but there are one or two that (to me,) are new - such as one that enables you to 'crack' all 'uncrackable' bricks or there is another that doubles your points for the level.

There are NO OPTIONS to configure whatsoever - there is NO MUSIC, (not sure if that's one of the bonuses or not!) ;) and I had to force the window to full screen by using the normal Windows method via the max/min., button.

Game Play: It wasn't that long before I realized why the game was called "Tricky Dwarfs" [sic] The tiny little dwarves mischievously drop balls on you almost constantly - so stay very alert or they'll fall on you and take points away - 300 at a time.

These balls, although the same color as your own ball, are slightly darker in shade and I'm sure created that way to confuse you while going for other bonuses etc.

When you knock the brick out from under the dwarves, or release them from being enclosed by one, they'll do somersaults and bounce repeatedly when they hit your bat - each bounce increasing your score up to 400 points. However, it can be dangerous, as it does pull your attention away from your own ball.

Another mischievous act from the dwarves is to freeze your bat for a few seconds - that one I really HATE! ;) The bat is straight rather than curved - and I actually find these harder to judge an angle, than the curved bat many of us are mostly used to.

There are also {purple) bricks which will explode all the other (purple) bricks around itself and some that need to be hit multiple times. The rest is easy.

Very oddly though the playing field shows your score and there are toggles for music on and off (what music?!?!) There is also NO way to see which level you're up to?!?! And finally a pause button. But that's it folks!

Aside from differing layouts, I couldn't see the game getting any more difficult or better with succeeding levels - other than those dang dwarves dropping more and more light bulbs on me! ;)

Suggested age group: 10 - 65 (or more!)

Points:

2 for graphics;

1 for introducing 2 power-ups not noticed before in 'breakouts;'

-1 NO options;

-1 NO music;

-1 Lack of difficulty or change in levels;

TOTAL = 0/10 - plus a definite 'thumbs down.'

Have a great day everyone!

This is a very strange game in many respects.

Although it downloaded and installed seamlessly as all games have done in the past for me and had one less icon on my desktop than even I wanted myself (I chose it to put an icon on my desktop but it did not!! :-D ) Tricky Dwarfs is very primitive. The first and only screen before playing the game itself is an explanation of the 18 power ups available. That is it. No instructions, no rules, no options, no "About" page - no anything other than what power ups you can collect.

For those who believe that Freegames4rest/ Double Games are just vendors this is just another example that they are not - to vend only games with no instructions would be too coincidental. The graphics are the same as past titles too, this is definitely another game that they have created themselves.

I do not understand why this developer never gives instructions, it seems totally alien to have a game but not explain how to play it. Although this game is played by using the mouse, there is a flaw with that in itself - the game is an Arkanoid type game where your bat must hit the ball BUT your mouse cursor MUST be in the correct spot on the game play area for the bat to move left anf right. HOWEVER, there is no cursor on the game area so you have to experiment moving the mouse around until the bat agrees to move, by which time you have lost lives. Even if you start off being able to move the bat the cursor seemingly drifts during the game and the bat will stop moving until you guess where the invisible cursor needs to be to continue play. This is all very messy, life losingly frustrating and unnecessary, the bat should move regardless of where the cursor is and this is bad development as opposed to part of the game. It is, I have noticed, better in the windowed mode as opposed to the full screen mode - however the windowed mode is TINY and as above there is no facility to make it any bigger because there are NO other screens than the power ups!!!

The graphics of the game are very primitive in themselves, it is like stepping back into the early 80s without an 80s price tag. I do not usually comment on price but this game seems so basic and - for want of a better description - unfinished. It is definitely not worth $15 as it is, it needs instructions and the bat glitch fixing and even then it would be a very basic game.

There is no music, just the sound of the ball hitting blocks and the occasional noise of the dwarfs themselves. At one point during my first go, one of the dwarfs screamed for some reason (I haven't seen them to do it since) and my dog woke up and ran out of the room!!! But no, other than that, no music or sound.

The game with its lack of screens, seemingly somewhat flawed programming, no music and basic graphics seems to be less than even a Beta version, to me it is still in its Alpha stages. The first few levels are incredibly slow after which the bat not moving frustrated me so much that I put the game off (deleting my manually installed icon at the same time...).

The developers got one thing correct - the game's title "Tricky" Dwarfs is spot on - tricky to figure out why no instructions, tricky to play and tricky to understand a $15 price tag, this is a game that I'm afraid I do not recommend. I'm truly sorry to be so negative but I really don't think this less than primitive game is worth even downloading.

Sorry to hear of your problem Raven. I lost my favorite one also. Quest for Atlantis was so habit forming I saw the game board when I closed my eyes. Brickshooter Egypt is also a good one.Until a friend sent me the link to Give away of the Day, the only games I had played was the Myst series. Alas they are finished. Thanks to this site I have a great many games I really enjoy. Perhaps GOTD will give away some of thier previous selections in the future. HINT.{smile}

I don't normally say bad things about these games because I figure that they're free and just because I don't like them doesn't mean other people won't. But this one was SO frustrating. I liked the concept - breakout and you get points for bouncing the falling dwarves, but the ball is SOOOOO slow, and the paddle would stick at what seemed like random times. I would think it would be frustrating for young kids, too, because the controls are so sluggish. Well, maybe GOTD has dwarves on the brain and they'll give me more Brave Dwarves tomorrow :-) As it is, I think I'll join the group and go download Peggle.

I love hearing Ode to Joy and seeing my final peg go down in slomo with the accompaning fireworks and rainbows. I WILL purchase this one, and thats saying a lot for a penny pinching Scott.Try it, You'll like it. Thanks to GOTD. You guys rock too. Regards, Heln

I agree with Peggle Deluxe, awesome game. I had to reformat my computer and lost all the games I had on it that I liked playing, particularly brickshooter egypt. I like a challenge game. I wish I could get some of them back. My backup didn't save all the install files for the games because of the virus I had. Any ideas how to get them without having to pay would be appreciated.

Thanks for the screen shots whiterabbit. Now i know why some of these games dont have screenshots lol. I wouldnt download without them and since it looks pretty basic i dont need it. downloaded with easy ,While I love these type of games , this one lacks 3d graphics, the game play is slow and boring, My 5 year old grand daughtor may like it for the first 5 mins, then it will even bore her, I don't like that you can not access the Menu in the game and it does not save your game, you just x out of the game, it is a cheap version of these types, 14.95 is way too much, I would say 4.95 for this game, the Game is playable but.....very slow moving and boring, I give it a 2 just because I did play it for 30 mins waiting to see if it gets better, it didn't, i could drink my coffee while waiting for the ball to come down, too slow.

this one I would have to rate at the bottom of the scale it reminds me of the drawings of a first grade student . the cursor hangs to often and I have more then enough memory to run this one. I am running duel core with 1 gig memory . if any one paid good money to buy this they upon playing the first time would be very unhappy with the loss of 15 bucks , better spent on some gasoline . Sorry guys but you need to go back to the drawing board with this one .

Thank you whiterabbit for the screencaps. Based on that, I'm not even going to download this one. And second the opinion of #9 -- Peggle is such a great game, I bought it immediately after trying out.

Seeing as I didn't even download, I won't give this one thumbs up or down, but GGOTD folks should advise publishers/distributors that screencaps should be included with each giveaway. Without one, I grow horribly skeptical.

A mediocre to average (several years ago) break out game, that definitely reminds me of another breakout game; however I have well over 140 of these now that I can’t remember what the name is lol. As Ron above says, if you’ve not got a break out game, or you collect breakouts like myself, this is worth keeping.

There is no start menu as such; the first screen you’re presented with is the start screen, with a brief explanation of the 18 power ups this game gives you.

Start Screen with power up details:

There is no shortcut installed onto the desk top even though I’m sure when I installed the game it asked if I wanted one. My mind may be playing tricks, but I haven’t time to re check it.

The game is a basic breakout with a colorful screen and large blocks. The little Dwarves (The title has a spelling mistake as Dwarves isn’t spelled Dwarfs, but hey, that’s not a big deal) throw light bulbs at you which take off at least 400 points at a time. There are a lot of them at the start so watch out. Hitting the brick that the Dwarf is perched on or hitting the Dwarf will dislodge the dwarf. Catching this with your bat will give you extra points. But don’t let it distract you from the more important ball, which is easily done if you don’t play a lot of these games.
In game screen:

End of Level:

That’s it. The aim is to work through the levels and score

There’s no information given about the game, the options as always with this distributor/developer are accessible from the screen at all times. There’s no music and the sound effects are mediocre. These can be turned of by clicking on the speaker symbol to the left of the playing area. You can also pause this game from a button just below the sound toggle. To the upper right is the toggle for full screen/windowed mode.

I don’t know how many levels you get as I’ve never seen this game before. The graphics are okay, but not up to the usual polish of games like this. However I do like the color.

5 out of 10 for playability (I’m biased because this genre is one of my favorites :) )

Well I got to say it's a stinker. The paddle sticks or gets lost completely so it wasn't so fun to play. I do like the idea though. It had potential just no throughput. Someone dropped the ball on this one and it wasn't just the Dwarves, Rating: Big Stinko
NOw let me say thanks for the work ggotd puts into their business of bring these gems to us. All may not be the best but all is free. Have a good day.

Loaded smoothly and played fairly well. Could not access options except at the start of the program... and the various buttons did not change when clicking on them. The only way to make changes was to guess which button the cursor was on. This was the very first application on a brand new computer.

This is just the standard "breakout" game, so there's nothing new. But if you don't have one of these type games on your computer, this is worth downloading for those younger than 10 or older than 80...but those in between the two extremes, it will probably lack the action of most games.

The object is to catch falling green options and your ball... avoid red objects and the balls that the dwarfs drop (which look almost the same as your ball. If you knock one dwarfs down, try and hit him, because he will bounce like crazy and knock down a lot of bricks.

Some bricks require multiple hits, but there's no indication that they've been hit as there are in other versions of this type of game... and I consider this to be a major flaw of the program.

Three stars out of ten.
