I liked this game for about... oh, thirty minutes or so, but the main thing I actually got rid of the game is the chat server. Obviously, they where trying to fool us into thinking that they where actually real people and that the "server" was really connected. For three reasons, you can first have a suspicion that the chat box doesn't involve real people. First, take into consideration that RIGHT WHEN YOU PRESS ENTER there is a response. Considering about 45% of humans cant type faster then eight words per minute, (which is quite sad) after a few times you realize that it most likely isn't human. Also, the phrases are based on what you say, but very poorly. If you say something with a question mark, he will either say I don't know, what are you askin me for, or I'm not the one to ask, even if you ask "are you a robot".

Fact three. If you are in middle of doing some fast clicking with file rip to black market in a five second time trace, why would the person even respond? The people wouldn't even make the game like that if it where real people, because it would mess so many people up.

So there you have it, everything repeats and this game seriously sucks.

I just wanted to say that this game is more like an adminstrative job. You do practically the same thing over and over again. There are no skills required, no strategy needed, no experience neccessary, you just do the samething. What is so damn fun about that?

Don S (#46) - All it is, most likely, is that your refresh rate isn't what it used to be. Don't panic. Just go in the Display Properties, ensure your resolution is correct, then go to Advanced and change the refresh rate to something your monitor can handle. It was probably 85 or 70-something.

Calvin (#48), Joe Momma (#51) - Making it run in a window isn't the issue, really; It's that they set the display resolution rather than creating a fullscreen app with a set resolution. The different is subtle (They should've used DirectX, which would've known exactly what to do), but important, and it appears they haven't grasped that concept.

Great game, thanks GGOTD! Although it doesn't have a story as interesting as hacker evolution, its still one of the best hacker games i've seen...

Not a bad game, but not worth having to rearrange my desktop icons after every time I run it. Note to programmers: if your program changes video resolution, it's a nice gesture to change it back when the user exits the program. Uninstalled.

When you close down the game (either due to a crash or normally exiting), and your PC changes back to your normal resolution, it messes up your windows desktop: if you had your icons all organized, the whole thing is gone. You get your desktop icons all mixed - and this would happen every time you play and exit the game. MAJOR FRUSTRATION GENERATOR. Exosyphen, why not learn how to create an app, that runs in a window, or at least add it to the options. It's not that tricky...

TD. Basically, this game involves mechanical grinding with limited thinking - IP addresses are sent to you in a constant stream, which you simply place into your password cracker. You then connect and grab the money. Lather, rince, repeat. Once you reach a certain point, there's almost no reason to progress.

Also, there's a bug with the password generator - if a character can't be cracked, that means it is a '['.

Lousy POS crashed my monitor totally. Uninstalled the buggy thing, but the monitor display was still screwed up. Had to use XP's system restore, and even then my old desktop graphics would'nt work as before. And this for a virtual clone of a boring game I played eons ago on an Atari ST?

Only took a brief look at it so far, but you'd better hope you're not using a large desktop. I use 1152x864@85Hz, and the darn thing screwed my open windows and refresh rate. It does not change the resolution properly. Make sure you close everything that has a window first, and I do mean everything. You may find yourself having to set your refresh rate again.

Also, this does not qualify as an RPG. Then again, to most people games like WoW pass as an RPG even if you don't actually roleplay. Sigh. How I yearn for the old categories to be remembered.

Downloaded fine.

Explored zip file. Only a read me and the setup. Activation happens automatically when running the setup. Nice.

Installed without a hitch.

Upon starting it asks for the players handle while playing the usual boring techno music. Entered name and ..... game locked up for a couple of seconds and then dumps me back on the desktop while leaving the screen in the 800 x 600 mode. Not nice.

What's even worse is that it did so without bringing back the start bar. Had to do the 3-fingered salute and select log off from the windows task manager to bring it back. Luckily I had Icon restore installed because of course the icons on the desktop where all over the place
http://users.rcn.com/taylotr/icon_restore.html

If it works for you, fine, it certainly didn't for me.

As Whiterabbit mentions the game is approx. 26.6 MB installed.
Earlier today I mentioned that I hoped that their wouldn't be 10 MB of music and sound. There isn't.
There is a whopping 18 MB music. Or to put it differently. 3 sound files. A 5Kb .wav. One mp3 of 1.6MB and one mp3 of 17MB.

Another incredible 4,8 MB is for 7 graphics which are the main menu background, the about box, the load file dialog box, the new agent dialog box, the score box, the welcome box. None of them one would consider state of the art graphics.
Add to that another 2 MB for some misc. buttons and in game screen elements and there's not much left.
Not counting some little things that leaves 1.5 MB for the execute and an entire 21 KB (yes kilobyte) of game data. The 21 KB is pure theoretically because I would be surprised if there's actually that much data in those files.

Words fail me to start to describe the shear disbelief that anyone can even think of calling this a commercial product.

This game normally sells for 9.95 USD. That's about 14.95 USD too much.

-------

For those that are stuck at that other badly written hacker game called Hacker Evolution. Explore the game folders on your hard disk. In it you'll find what sites you have to hack on what levels including which ports there are.

The music rocks.

The game itself looks like fun... Actually I'm not really a computer-game player, but this one excites me (partially because it looks like it will take some skill and mental capacity, vs. finger dexterity).

Can't wait to take it for a spin!

Well Hacker Evolution was a nice game, but a game that only an expert could get through, as at one point of time, I was stuck, didn't know what to do, and till date I don't, so the whole purpose of my playing the game is lost, and yes, not to forget, THERE ARE NO CHEATS FOR HACKER EVOLUTION.
Now I just hope This game is BETTER, not easy, as when things are easy, they aren't interesting, but at least, it's minimum requirements shouldn't want you you to be an expert at such things.

It's a lot easier and intuitive than Hacker Evolution, but still fun. I'm still trying to find the files I copied (while playing the game) but I only played for a few minutes, and didn't really read the tutorial. I managed to hack into a few sites and transfer money and copy files, so far. It's pretty fun; for free, you can't complain. I love hacker-type games, and was pleasantly surprised to find this game on GGOTD. Thanks, guys!

If people are interested in these kind of games, take a look at Uplink. It is a hacker style game with only three programmers, and yet it has a great story with challenging and fun gameplay. It is set in 2010, and really simulates computer systems. Nothing is more fun than breaking into a government computer system and deleting the contents of the Systx folder (The lastest operating system) via the hacked command console. I highly reccomend it.

Is this an activity we want to encourage? How about the reverse. Hackers hacking into an evil company to shut it down and bring the operators to justice? Or just blowing them up! Now that's a positive role model for the children to aspire to! Hack for Good!

Mindlink 2005 underground, an rpg/adventure game is a similar offering to Hacker Evolution a giveaway of several weeks ago; except that it’s a third of the price (almost). If you follow the link to the developer’s website you’ll find a link to the previous giveaway. The site is bland, but professional looking.

Today’s game is a very large download for an arcade game, weighing in at over 20 Mb. The installed game is 27.8Mb. Once unpacked and installed (for those who find those links to web sites etc annoying), you’ll be happy to know that only the folder where you unpack the zip file to will have a home page link and this together with the zip file and activate icons can be deleted with only a few clicks of the mouse button. No extra links are created on your desk top. :) ; not that it bothers me because its worth the hassle for a free piece of software.

The basic story line:

You are an agent whose job is to hack into industry and commercial web sites with the aim of making money. You work for an underground agency called the Mindlink agency. All the agents in the network are aiming to achieve one target - to steal lots of money, hack more online sites and companies, crack passwords, and then steal useful information with the aim of making yourself rich and powerful Your mission and goals are to work underground as a hacker,.
You start at the bottom and work your way up in the world of hackers. Unlock better software and upgrades (high tech devices) which will help you advance in the game. Mindlink 2005: Underground is a never-ending game

The following are the operating systems this software will work on:
Win95, Win98, WinME, Windows2000, WinXP, Windows2003, Windows Vista Starter, Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Enterprise, Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Vista Home Basic x64, Windows Vista Home Premium x64, Windows Vista Business x64, Windows Vista Enterprise x64, Windows Vista Ultimate x64. I never realized there were so many choices for Vista.

The concept behind Hacker Evolution is to create a game that challenges the gamers’ intelligence, attention and focus, creating a captivating mind game. Solve puzzles, examine code and bits of information, to help you achieve your objectives. Sounds interesting; however it’s not a game for those who like a quick game, or find it hard to concentrate. There’s no gorgeous graphics. But the game play seems interesting and involved.

Main Menu:

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/mindlinkmain.gif

The usual options menu contains toggles for switching the music and sound effects on and off. There’s also a toggle for switching an auto save function on or off. The sound track is basic techno, which is okay initially, but becomes tedious after a while.

You can actually put your own music into the music folder by following the path to where your game is installed. The default is:

c:\mindlink2005Underground

Then open up the folder called Mindlink2005Underground. You will see a folder called music. Open this, then (if you want to save the music) create a back up file. There are three mp3 files labeled si-1, si-3, si-5. You can put any mp3 track you wish up to a maximum of three tracks. You then have to change the name of each song to one of the original file names. You must have three files in that folder, so if you only wish to change one, then leave two of the original files untouched.

Starting the game:

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/mindlinkname.gif

When you create a new file a window will open up within the main menu window where you type in your chosen name, then click on join. You will be presented with a message saying congratulations you have now been accepted as a new agent to work for the Mindlink Digital Agency.

Tutorials:

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/mindlinkstarttutorial.gif

You will be walked through what you have to do so I won’t go into details It looks like it’ll take more than a few minutes to figure out how to play this game. I’m too doped up with morphine to take the game any further today, so hopefully Merril or Swan will explain further.

I did change the music to something more appropriate. The first of the three track will play while you are setting up the game. Once you’ve gone into the game proper the second track will start to play. I would suggest you place long MP3’s in the music file labeled, si-3 and si-5. Perhaps splice several of your favorites together using some of the many audio applications we’ve been offered via the giveaway site.

When you initially unpack the game and start to install it you will be asked to install three files; the first is the game file and then Visual Basic Runtime 6.0 and another file called Msstdfmt, (Microsoft Standard Data Formatting Object) which is a ddl file that I think is concerned with visual basic, firewalls and security. I did a search and it says there should be no problems with this ddl file. I think it is needed for the game. There are uninstallers available though if you aren’t happy. Just Google the file name and check out the hits.

I didn’t install the latter two files on one of my computers and it seemed to work, however I’m not sure whether the Visual Basic and the ddl file are required during the game at some point. Maybe you need the programming language for parts of the hacking game. :). Sorry this is an incomplete review. My children have just arrived home from school; so I need to finish.

Good morning everyone!

*groans*

I had SO many problems with 'Hacker Evolution!' that I'm just not prepared to go through the entire (messy) process again. With what the latter did to my computer, I'm not even prepared to download and review this game.

Even when I know I'm not going to keep the game, I'll still review it for others - not this time however.

I'm happy to wait for tomorrow. ;)

If you are ever looking at the "public" files in the market and there's a blank one... DO NOT CLICK IT. This is a bug that will freeze the game forcing you to kill it in task manager.

The bug bit me, and now my icon order is all messed up lol

I just hope it's better then "Hacker evolution". That one had so many faults, errors and to boot was badly programmed that it was sad.
The only good thing that came of it was that the paying customers got a revised and updated version offered because of the critical reviews that others and I wrote on here. Still meant that us GGAOTD users were left with a game that contained errors in it that made certain levels unplayable for some.

I can't test Mindlink 2005 underground right now but I'm curious as to why it was only 10 MB half a year ago and 20 MB now. I do hope it isn't because they decide to add some music/sounds to it but because they improved the program.

I have been unable to find an actual review of it although I do find it at the usual places as an offered shareware download. The no reviews anywhere doesn't bode well.

Looking forward to testing it out this evening because it is rare to see a game here that is actually meant to be a challenge to the 8 year olds and older.
