I really enjoyed this game. Thank you GOTD & Playrix.
I loved the graphics (except the opening image, it wasn't the same quality as the graphics in the game). Also loved the sounds.
It isn't a game that I would play over and over again though.

~took the advise about crusin' the board links & wandered into a couple that look pretty interesting- thank goodness it's allways so rainy n cool up here in that Pacific NW; it'll keep us inside more & trying some new to us games- :)
sure wish I had the brainspace to get the hang o that dar-whatever sub 1 WR mentioned on one o those boards I was-a-trollin' :)

Thanks for the great game. I love HOGs and have a new laptop so am starting over building my free game collection.

I do want to mention that I have the screen size issue with this wide screen laptop (1366x768 on Win7-64), but there is no ability to scroll when non-windowed. This game cuts off the bottom part when in window mode, but full screen is acceptable. I dislike playing in full screen because I like to multitask and play the game in multiple sessions over a period of time without shutting it down in between. I don't even bother installing games on my netbook (XP) any more for this reason. I realize that with the free games being a bit older, they aren't intended for the new screen widths, but I think it would be good if developers start considering the possibility of screen sizes changing going forward. I've been upgrading computers every couple years lately and it has become enough of an issue that I hesitate to buy games thinking they may not work well after the next upgrade.

Otherwise, I enjoyed this game and finished it late last night. I normally turn off all sound, but this one uses sound as a clue to finding the cherished items so I left it on very low. I'm glad there are visual aids in addition to sound since I spend quite a bit of time working late at night when others are sleeping, and would prefer to turn sound off completely. I like the shadow shapes rather than a list of items to look for and the rotation of items so the shapes are not the same all the time adds to the difficulty. While I love HOGs, I have no interest in the stories and it always seems like a lot of effort is put into them. I did read this one since it wasn't as intrusive. Some games have page after page of comic-book type dialog you have to click through, while this moved the story line using diary pages that held text.

I don't know if it's coincidence or what, but it seems that a whole lot of the HOGs use the same set of images in different scenes. On the one hand, it's nice to have familiar items when searching, but on the other hand they're getting kind of old. Maybe it comes from a library of packaged images being used, but it would be nice to have a complete change now and then. Like I said, possibly just coincidence in my case.

Thanks so much GGOTD and Playrix!

Hello there, I just wanted to thank you for the delightful game. I don't like hidden games like this but with the theme of love and pirates and ghosts and such, it actually makes the game appealing to me. But I do have one comment to actually improve the game, in the tutorial, when the tutorial window pops up to tell you about the compass, it says "THE COMPASS WILL HELP YOU TO FIND NORMAL ITEMS. WATCH THE ARROW FOR DIRECTIONS ON WHERE THE ITEM IS BUT BE AWARE THAT EACH USES COSTS YOU IN GOLD!" the word USES should be spelled USE to make the sentence correct. Of course some good voice acting, reading the opening story to set the mood especially, would also really improve the game as well, but other than that, as I said earlier, wonderful game!

Unfortunately, not unlike many of these games that I try on my NetBook, it's a fail, as there's no 1024x600 resolution support! Can't see the entire screen.

I am usually terrible at these types of games. I don't mind most timed games but the HOG's drive me nuts. I get hurried, frustrated and finally just quit. So this game makes me happy for NOT having a timer. My suggestion to developers would be to have both a timed and a "Zen" Mode for these types of games.

Thank you Playrix Entertainment and GGOTD for this game.

And thanks to that Wrascally Wabbit too. Now I know Chazzo posted an awesome (adventure)game and as did the Wrascally One(an Asteroids Clone), so I need to check them out. You would be amazed at some of the games they post in the forum.

I downloaded this game given away last time and loved it. It is a great game, but one little problem for me. My screen resolution was 1024*768. The game works fine. After I replaced my monitor to new one, which with resolution 1366*768, I found trouble. The game did not show the whole screen and cut off part of right side area. Since it was after I finished the game, I did not try to solve the problem. :)

I meant to post earlier today that you can get Magic Ball 3 (now called Smash Ball Frenzy 3) for free from Alawar via the free game box, the offer is probably good for a few more weeks yet before the game is changed for another game . They give a different game every month and also have weekly bargain bin where you can get three or four games for only $1.99 each. This week’s bargains include:

Autumn Treasures: The Jade Coin
Bilbo - The Four Corners of the World
Farm Frenzy - Pizza Party!

These change to three new games on Tuesday.

You can download the Gamebox via the following link

http://company.alawar.com/technologies/a_player.php

and check out the three games mentioned above via this one:

http://www.alawar.com/?rd=1

p.s. I’m not getting paid for this; i just think they are bargains worth investigating, and the game box is totally innocuous

Today’s game giveaway has been downloaded 8052 times over the past 15 hours. That’s one every 6.7 seconds throughout the day. There have been 34 comments not counting this one. That’s only 0.42% of the community bothering to comment on the game and of those only 0.04% were of a constructive nature. The rest were just happy to see, great game type comments.

If we got more comments from those who downloaded the game; especially after playing it for a few hours; constructive comments suggesting improvements etc. may inspire other developers to use this site a s a means of getting feedback about their new games as well as taking up the ideas that you suggest. . It just takes a few moments to jot down a few ideas, which would be very much appreciated. I’m sure the lack of many comments is ‘one’ of the reasons why we are not getting many developers joining the giveaway project.

I am going to pass on this as I am tired of all of these HOGs as you pointed out you can get lots of them from MyPlaycity among others. I have a couple of these type of games but that is enough. Can we have more Time Management,arcade, or RPG type games please. Sorry it is just you can find HOGs everywhere you turn for some reason.

..........................Moderator Comment........................

It's one of the reasons I cancelled my Big fish subscription. I had several credits and all I saw day after day were new HOG's and time management games. That was two years ago and I've still not used all my credits. they are still churning out the things. Both of which i don't particularily like. (apart from some of the earlier HOG's and games like Farm Frenzy). I much prefer the Indie scene where you can find some brilliant and original games.

Installed on Win7 64bit. Seemed to install correctly and came up with menu. Entered my name, looked at options, but then the full screen went black. Tried hitting different keys lick esc., etc., but no joy. Closed the game trough task manager, but now my task bar is sitting about an inch above the bottom of the screen and I am unable to move it back, even though it is unlocked. Strange behavior!

I never used to like HOGs until just recently. This offer today seems to be a little different than the ones I've played before. Although not played very long, this one seems a little more challenging. And I haven't seen any of the (as Chazzo mentioned) find "x" or "y" number of items. And I like the silloettes rather than words.
I really appreciate the efforts of GGOTD to provide these free games. You don't receive near enough credit for what you do.
And thanks to all the game developers who put their games here for us to try/play with no obligation.
Two thumbs up from me.

@Moderator re: PlayBus DANGEROUS

You are right to be warning people. There are trojans in their games, and if it doesn't get thru your firewall & antivirus the first time, the hackers will keep trying until they break your code and get thru, hijack your computer, and send you to a site that requires you buy their software to get your computer back. The company is in the UK.

You won't be able to get control of your computer back. Even turning it off and rebooting, and all the other tricks, won't work.

So yea, don't trust PlayBus. I was directed there as a free, safe site, so they actively post and direct people there...from sites that are usually trustworthy...like this one. I don't want to point the finger at Anu (#7 OP comment) but that's exactly the way I got sucked in.

Consider yourself warned...

........................Moderator comment..........................

Thanks for the support re: PlayBus. when I first visited the site I was really shocked to see games that i'd only just purchased as new releases That alone told me it was a scam site and very dangerous. no one gives away premium games like that unless theres a catch. Games from sites like MyPlayCity and Gametop on the other hand usually give good games that have been released fo a few years already and they pay the authors or licence holders of the game a premium for being able to give their games away.

It's easy to get sucked in, especially if you're not able to afford many games. so please beware of such sites. :)

I picked this up last time it was offered, i prefer the mysterious city series (no offense to any Playrix staff that might see this!), but this is a nice game too! Fishdom, another playrix title, is a huge hit with my family, my fiancee is on level 1,172 and has $16,136,029.00 to spend lol. I lean toward fishdom: frosty splash, but i'm a sucker for xmas/winter themed games!

Installed on Win 7 64 bit fine; however, turned off full screen for a short while to access something else, and now cannot get full screen back. Full screen will respond, but next mouse click, no matter where on the screen, reverts it back to partial screen, which is too small to be of any use.

..........................Moderator Comment........................

Try deleting the game then reinstalling. You may have to clear any registry entries before reinstalling otherwise configurations may have been saved and you'll be at square one. Be sure to create a restore point before you start messing with the registry though. To access the registry editor type Regedit in the run command or search bar found in the Start menu. Use the edit find button to find entries specific to spirit of wandering, usin the F3 key to move through the registry, deleting any entries applicable to the game. Once done reinstall the game. This is only a suggestion. As a last resort you could install the MyPlayCity version. apart from the browser opening when you close the game down and the potential to install toolbars if you don't ubncheck any boxes during installation, the games from MPC are okay.

If it helps anyone having problems running Spirit Of Wandering...

The requirements listed in the game's "System requirements.txt":
* Windows XP/Vista
* 600MHz or faster Processor
* 128MB RAM
* DirectX-certified Sound Card
* 32MB Video Card with 16-bit Color and 3D acceleration
* DirectX 7.0 or better

It is only the 2nd non-flash game I've had run in win7's XPMode VM [though not wonderfully], so hardware requirements are not that high -- that VM has 16 bit color in a window that's 1440x900. Besides the game's main folder [Playrix Entertainment], "Profiles.xml" is added in a folder named Artogon that's placed under User Application Data or User App Data Roaming... it is editable in Notepad, & among other changes you might try, you can for example switch to windowed mode if the game won't run to do it through options/settings [change the 1 to 0 -- 0]. FWIW install added the 2 folders mentioned, Start Menu & Desktop shortcuts, + uninstall & HKCU\Software\Test3D keys are added to Windows Registry. Seems to run OK in 7 ult 64 SP1 as well.

I like these type of games and know that I won't have time to play it much today, so I am grateful for the comprehensive comments from WR and other users. In view of them, I have already installed it on my stand alone machine. Can you please advise if there is a limit to how many computers I can load this game on once I have downloaded the zipped file, as I would like to install it on my laptop and I know my offspring would like it on their individual laptops as well.

..........................Moderator Comment........................

sorry for the late reply; I fell asleep. thankfully the other moderator who usually moderates a couple of times a day had moderated the last three or four hours. you can install it to as many computers as you wish so long as they are installed and activated before the 24 hour time period is up. You've got just under 10 hours to install to the rest of your computers. :)

Hi Stephen - today's game is one of my favorites, but for one thing - it isn't long enough! I've been playing it since the last giveaway, and have to agree with several of the above comments; it's better fullscreen than scrolled in a window for obvious reasons, it's not on a par with Playrixs' best, and the outline/'scope features add a bit different challenge. I also prefer to not play the built-in music every time, it gets old. HOGs with story lines are the best kind, of course, and having some puzzles only adds to the challenge, although this is hardly one of the more challenging. No 1-10 rating here, it's certainly well worth the drivespace and time you'll spend with it if you like HOGs, IMO. (I just wish this had been for an updated version!)

You're to be forgiven for plagiarizing your own plagiarized remarks from before, too - I think we all know what a busy (family) man you are, and I for one am very grateful for the time you spend moderating here - I think I speak for ALL of us when I say you've made a world of difference to the GGOTD site, and along with your helpers in the forums, I just want to say thanks for all you do.

This is very much one of the better HOGs. The scenes are excellent, objects are sometimes rotated from their 'shadows' and some are colored/shaded to blend in to their surroundings. I sometimes had to use the compass at a cost of 50 gold to find some objects! Perhaps if I'd persevered I might have found some of these but some were really quite hard to find, which isn't a bad thing. There are no stupid repetitions such as find 'x' pieces of paper or 'y' pens etc, which are the absolute bane of some HOGs.

I find this very pleasant to play with great scenes to play and a good storyline! Excellent!

ps in the first instance, try several times over a space of half an hour if you get 'failed to connect' as sometimes it's just the server very busy!

I have played a few but the latest ATi/AMD drivers from 11.2 makes the game flickering in Crossfire. I haven't tested to disable CF, but requires reboots in the end.

I wish I could edit a "ini" file to try to do something about it.

Cheers,

having issues installing, keeps coming up with "failed to connect" when it tries to activate. tried re downloading, but no luck.... any suggestions please?

.........................Moderator comment........................

there's two surefire fixes and a couple more that may fix the problem.

1)......turn your modem and/or router off for about 30 seconds then reboot. Then see if the problem has been sorted.

if that doesn't work:

2)......Find your Temporary internet folder and delete all cookies related to the game giveaway - these sometimes become corrupted and stop the activation process.

3)......if neither of those work, check to see if your firewall or AV program is blocking the activation. (You should usually get a pop up if this is the case, so it's unlikely to be this; especially as no one else has reported any problems related to firewalls and AV programs, but it's still worth checking).

4)......finally if none of the above fix the problem, delete the installation, redownload from the mirror image and try again. :)

Please let us know if any of the above worked. Thank you.

W.R.

@ 3. Are you using a laptop? Go to Goodwill and buy an old style monitor and hook up to it.

I am using Windows 7 64 bits. No problem. Enjoy the game. Thanks!
Very nice graphics and thank you for the options of cutting off the
music. Music is nice too, just prefer my own or none and listening
to the radio while I play. No negatives to report.

I took advantage of this the last time it was offered. It's an ok game but definitely old and of lesser quality than Playrix normally offers. I'm guessing this came out when publishers were still feeling their way around the casual game market to figure out what players liked. Hard to pass up for free, just don't expect to be playing something like Gardenscapes or Farmscapes (which are both awesome.)

...........Moderator comment...................

I agree with you there. both 'scapes games are great. Not played the for awhile though. Need to dig them out. :)

ohh...thank you for the tip and it worked when i changed the screen size.but now i have scroll but that ok.=)

...................Moderator Comment........................

If you intend playing the game for any extended period it may be an idea to change your screen resolution to the highest setting that your monitor allows, so that you make use of monitors area. Lower resolutions will make the image bigger and cause you to have to scroll more; (at least I think I've got it the right way around, lol)

I already played this one some months ago from my play bus - totally loved it!

........................Moderator Comment........................

Did you know that all of MyPlayBus games are ripped off. If you read the EULA during installation it tells you that the games have been hacked. You'll notice they have the latest games for free, which is immediately suspicious. I'm surprised they haven't been shut down for flagrantly ripping off developers work. I'd also be careful w.r.t. hidden Trojans in such 'gifts'. :) Sorry for preaching, I just find it appalling that someone is making money off of the backs of hard working developers. It's these people (hackers and rip off merchants that IMO take away better and cheaper games for everyone (not that games aren't cheap since the economic downturn, :lol

This is a good hidden object game if you haven't played it before, using a scope to find some of the items makes it more challenging than normal, as do the riddles, and the graphics are good. A great giveaway again GOTD ;o)

Installed on Windows 7 system - a bit different to the usual hidden object games I've played before which normally give a worded list of times to find, this one gives shapes of the objects. Have only played one room so far but looks really good. Thanks GAOTD and Playrix - love your games Playrix so if you can, please keep them coming! 2 Thumbs Up for this one!

I like these kind of games but unfortunately,my computerscreen is to small and i cannot play it properly.but the graphic and sound is pretty good.classic pirate adventures with fun quest and the story is pretty much average with a woman on a quest to find her lover and crew,with the legendary flying dutchman as a part of the backgroundstory.
easy to understand and fun to play.if i only had a little bigger screen,arghhh...(lol).

Today’s review has been mainly lifted from Gamezebos review of the game. I don’t like doing that, but needs must. I was too tired to put my thoughts down last night, I ended up staring at the monitor trying to play the game (to remind me of what it was like) and trying to figure out what I was doing, so decided to use Gamezebo’s review as I did the previous time this game was given away nearly seven months ago back in September 2010. I hope you don’t mind. All work used has been referenced to ensure the original authors have been acknowledged. Now go and download this reasonable HOG and enjoy this very pleasant Sunday.

Spirit of Wandering

Installation

The downloaded file is approximately 74.1 Mb in size and unpacks to a dual activation and set up module and a read me document that tells you how to install the game and gives you the terms and conditions. By default the game is installed to:

C:\Program Files\Playrix Entertainment\Spirit Of Wandering

But you can change the installation path during the install wizard. A shortcut is installed to both the desktop and start menu programs list. You can uninstall the game via the start menu programs list if you wish.

The game plays fine on XP Pro 32 bit with Service pack 3, Vista 64 bit Home Premium with Service pack 1 and Win 7 Ultimate and Pro 64 bit versions (I don’t have a home copy). Not had time to test it on Vista yet.

If you miss today’s game giveaway, you’ll find a copy available 24/7 from MyPlayCity. The advantage of downloading today’s game from the game giveaway project is that your browser won’t be opened every time you turn the game off; whereas the MyPlayCity version does open your browser. That said, games from MyPlayCity no longer try to install toolbars or hijack your home page, though it still pays to watch the installation wizard as I’ve not checked every game that's available. You’ll find a couple of hundred free arcade games covering most of the arcade genres available today. You can find the download link at the bottom of this review under alternatives.

The Game:

The following is a large part of a review posted over at Gamezebo. I left it too late to write much of my own thoughts on the game other than to say it’s a hidden object game.

Hidden object fans will swoon over the romantic hidden object adventure Spirit of Wandering: The Legend. It's the tale of a female pirate captain who loses her crew - including her lover, Jack - during an attack by the infamous ghost ship the Flying Dutchman. The crew aren't dead, but merely imprisoned in the spirit world, which means the captain must use her compass and Jack's magic orb to get them back.

Since spirits have a tendency to return to familiar places, the captain travels to locations that were important to her six crew members in an effort to pull them back into the world of the living. In order to do this, she must recover a series of items, including special "cherished" items that were especially important to each crew member.

Each location is split into several sub-scenes that contain a blend of normal and cherished items to find. Cherished items are unique in that they phase in and out of the real world, and can only be seen by holding the magic orb in front of them. To active the orb, you'll first have to find a short list of normal items and click on them with the mouse to cross them off a list. Once the orb is activated, it acts like a homing beacon. By listening to verbal cues and watching as the flames of the orb burn brighter, you can pinpoint the local of the cherished item and get it to show up.

When the cherished item is found, a new set of normal items appears, and the cycle continues until all cherished items are found in a given scene. The system works very well. Cherished items are identified by picture, while normal items are identified by a textual description which adds variety to the searching.

Item descriptions are more imaginative than the usual fare - expect to search for "Grecian pitcher of brass," "the curved blade of a soldier," "a pirate's hand pistol," and "the bust of a nobleman." Some descriptions border on riddles: "The home of golden bugs," for example, refers to a green shield adorned with gold scorpions, while "a container for timely sand," refers to an hourglass.

The lists of items are logical in the context of the game, and all adhere to an old-fashioned sea-faring pirate culture - for example, there are no CDs, computer, cars or telephones to find here. Rather, you'll be searching for things like quill pens, compasses, candlesticks, coral and wooden clocks.

When a crewmember is found they will reveal the location of a treasure trove. Treasure troves are fun mini-games where you're presented with a screen full of gold pieces and treasure, and have to try to click on as much of it as possible in 60 seconds. Replenishing your gold allows you to use your compass to give you hints if you get stuck finding a normal item. As you move the compass around the screen, the needle will rotate to point in the direction of an item.

Spirit of Wandering is bolstered by gorgeous graphics and suitably stirring music that uniquely complements each level. The game offers eighteen scenes set across six locations that include a pirate port, a primitive island village, an underwater grotto and the decks of the Flying Dutchman itself, as well as six treasure troves. This is a respectable number of levels considering that, unlike other hidden object games, you never re-visit the same scene twice.

What's more, the story is well-crafted and engaging. You'll get to know the six crew members you're looking for quite well by the end of the game thanks to colorful descriptions written in a diary-style book, and cherished items that are matched to each crew member's personality. Khikaru, for example, is the ship's look-out so it makes perfect sense that his cherished items are a spy-glass and a sexton for navigating.

While I would whole-heartedly recommend Spirit of Wandering: The Legend, there are a few issues worth noting. The first is that the riddle-like item descriptions, while clever, can often refer to more than one of the items on-screen. Finding which of the ten pots that the clue "a clay pot with a handle" actually refers to is a matter of trial-and-error that requires a bit of patience. Other times it's a simple case of two or more identical items - like barrels and beaded necklaces - appearing in different locations.

Players also can't expect to rely too much on hints, because it costs the hefty sum of 60 gold coins every time you use one. If you get stuck, you can exit to the map and try another location, or just wait it out - if you wait long enough, the game throws you a bone by briefly highlighting a hidden item. There are no time limits in Spirits of Wandering, so you can take as long as you like, however, if you randomly click on the wrong things too many times in rapid succession, you'll lose some of your precious gold.

Once story mode is completed, players can go back and play scenes individually in Advanced mode.

Music:

If you don't like the music you can change it for something that you prefer, but first you must convert the music to the ogg format then re-name each piece to one of the following: 0.ogg, 1.ogg, 2.ogg, 3.ogg, 4.ogg, 5.ogg, gold.ogg and menu.ogg. You can find the music folder via the path:

C:\Program Files\Playrix Entertainment\Spirit Of Wandering\music

As a precaution I'd back up the original music, but if you do forget, you can get the original files by downloading the version from MyPlayCity and using the files from that version. If you don't have a audio converter, you can download one of several from the giveawayofthedays freeware section which you can find via the following link:

You can see several images as a slideshow HERE

You can see video of Spirit of Wandering’s game play HERE and HERE

System Requirements:

* Windows XP/Vista (and it also works in Win 7)
* 600MHz or faster Processor
* 128MB RAM
* DirectX-certified Sound Card
* 32MB Video Card with 16-bit Color and 3D acceleration
* DirectX 7.0 or better

Conclusion:

This is a reasonable Hidden Object Game (H.O.G.), though there's nothing remarkable about it. There has been a plethora of HOG's released over the last few years, many of which are much better than this one (IMO); that said if you like the genre then you'll find this is a decent game. I got bored pretty quickly with the game, but then I had reason to be because I've played too many of the games over the last few years and was also very keen to return to some of my more recently purchased games such as Crysis 2, Need for Speed: Shift 2, Shogun 2: Total War and Dragonage 2, consequently I was impatient to finish the editing of this review. Unless you absolutely hate HOG's I recommend you download this free game. :lol:

The quality of presentation and the overall game play deserves at least 7 out of 10 as does the music. As mentioned above, this game is now available from sites like MyPlayCity 24/7, so if you miss today’s giveaway, or lose it to a format you can still get a copy from that free game download site :)
