If I had to choose one word to describe this game it would be inconsistent. This game has a lot of potential (at least as much potential as a cheap pool game can have), but it is lost because of the inconsistency problems.
The biggest problem is your opponent. I've been playing on the easy mode to get used to the game, and I can't get over how much my computer opponent changes during the game. At times he is like the worst player you can possibly imagine, missing extremely easy shots by a mile, and then suddenly mid-game, he turns into Minnesota Fats, and runs the table with shots that should only be hit by a professional.
The way the ball bounces off the bumpers is very inconsistent. At times it will take a slow bounce, and then the next time it goes flying around like you slammed it. The angles the balls take when you hit them can be very inconsistent. Some times you what you do to sink a ball on one shot doesn't seem to work on the next shot.
Even the rules seem to be inconsistent. When my opponent scratches, I can place my cue ball anywhere on my side of the table, but I can't shoot at a ball behind me, but when I scratch, the computer can shoot the ball any way he wants to.
It really isn't a bad game for what it is, but the inconsistency of many of the aspects of this game can be very frustrating.

I had an initial problem: Unable to set graphics mode. This was fixed by updating my graphics drivers. Then I had a Memory Violation Error. This was fixed by opening .exe file as Run as Administrator.

OK, so there is no help here in this case.
Sorry , but i can't stand this "checkbox and Admin"- Mantra any longer. the problem has something to do with Flash-Installation and the "reglib.dll". tried to replace but no success....I'm giving up.

Not a good reputation for Fly Games.....so many people with the same problem and NO Help at all......shame on you....at least this was a free offer....imagine you had bought this "gem" for real...

Tried on three PCs, one Win7 and two Vistas... never had a GGOTD problem before but this game doesn't seem to install to the C:Games folder as usual. I get the "Allow" popup and then nothing happens after that. Humph.

Being a great Billiards fan, I had some deja vu with this one.
Most likely the source of this game is called
Free Billiards 2008. It´s one of the better free billiard games. Give it a try!

Thank you Snowfox. Technically the games you get from FreeGamePick, Gametop and other free game sites are not actually free. They are given away under license by te respective site. They pay a premium to the developer of each game they have in their stock.

Do remember that these game sites will also attempt to install toolbars etc when you install any of the games you download from them.

While installing this game i get a virus alert from Emsisoft "Gen:Variant.Symmi.8289 (B)"

Kindly advise

........................Moderator Comment......................

I'e already commented on these virus alerts that some users get. Todays game (as with all giveaways) has been tested throughly using several anti makware packages.

Your anti malware software is picking up the security software that is now associated with giveaways. Some suites are just overly sensitive. What you are seeing is a false positive. That said, it's up to you to decide

Giveaway Of The Day previously gave away a pool game here called Billiards 3D or whatever it was called. I notice "X Project" etched on the table. Do they have permission from the original developers to use another games source code for their own. I can tell by the very ugly and annoying blue background that they might have done that to the scenery to avoid a potential copyright issue. If you look very closely the background was supposed to be a bar.

As for the game itself, It plays fine on my Windows 8 Pro with Media Center laptop , although the physicals and frame rate of the game is very very questionable. I loaded the folder of the game onto a flash drive, and took it to a friends house today who has a real gaming laptop (much darn faster then mine) and the framerate was the same on theirs as it was on mine. It leads me to believe the developer of the game , on the source code they purposely locked it in to prevent stability issues. This actually has a big effect on the physics of the pool balls as they dont move very realistically and sometimes a move you make on the table results on something else happening that you did not expect it to, Making this game not realistic to the true game of 8 ball.

There are many other great 3D pool games online. One of the best examples of this is a game called Fly Or Die 8 Ball. It can be found on a site called Fly Or Die dot com. You can practice by yourself or play against other opponents in real time. There are additional games there as well for the pool genre just look around.

As for this game Eh.... If it was not so rushed and more pretty to look at other then that annoying blue background I could get past the frame rate and other poor physics of the game but I would not pay the price they are asking for it as the game performs for lesser quality.

.......................Moderator comment....................

Thank you for your excellent feedback Little bear. I disagree about the physics being off. I found the game quite realistic and had no problems with frame rate (Using an i7 2600K 3.4 GHz quad core with 16GB of system memory and 2 x Gainward Geforce GTX 580's with 6GB of gRAM) As I've said elsewhere, its not the est pool game I've played (both commercial and free), then again its not the worst. Unless you are a fanatic about the game of pool then I would think the majority of community members would find this game quite decent.

With respect to permission, I don't know; however the game giveaway team are not in the habit of getting games from disreputable sites. This could harm their good standing with the big search engines.

Any one having the,The archive is either in unknown format or damaged,
is a refusal of your antivirus to let the program mainly the goto wrapper install file to run because it does not know what it is.
I had a major issue the with this same problem and even after I told the antivirus to allow the install and adding an exception to the rules it still would not install.
It is not a down load problem or file extraction issue, because after I changed my antivirus this issue went away.

I have tried to play this game a few times since the installation - which was easy. However, every time I try to play it I get a box stating Memory Access Violation.
I can't seem to play it. Have tried installing it into a different location - even the desktop with the same results every time so I have again simply uninstaller it.
Oh well!

Thanks Fly Games and GGOTD for this game. And thanks Wabbit for his review.

I am quite busy so have hardly the time to download much less post anything. Merry Christmas all, especially you..You Silly Wabbit. Hugs to the family too.

Oh, and @Karen from yesterday..I am 58 and love games. I use them for pain management like a lot of us here. It works wonders. Most of the forum is an older crowd too.

Nevertheless thumbs up.

Hi Marcel, did you read my review? Here's what I wrote in the installation section;

The downloads to a 11.9 MB zip file that unpacks to a read me and dual activation module, which for the newcomers to the game giveaway project means that once you’ve installed the game it automatically registers, that is, there’s no registration code to input. The game installs to the following path:

C:\Games\Game_Pool8Balls

There is no shortcut installed so you’ll have to follow the above path to create your own shortcut. To uninstall the game just delete the installed folder (there is no uninstaller). The game works on Win 7. Not tested it on any other platform yet.

re: Todays game is past it's sell date

Thats good to know, thank's.

......................Moderator Comment..................

The game isn't that bad. It really depends on what you want out of a game. some community members expect a lot, others (like me) are happy if theres even a hint of game play. This game works as a game of pool. The physics are okay, the graphics are okay the game is okay. As I've already said. I've played much better, with lots of features and I've play a lot worse with no features at all. IMO, the only way anyone can truly decide whether a game is worth playing is to try it themselves because we all have different criteria we think is important to us. Basically its a very individual thing. for example I have some games that have metacritic scores of around 40, for example Damnation, yet I personally think the game was brilliant (the main gripe many who scored it low had wa sthe awkward controls, yet I found them okay; probably designed by a left hander like me), wheras I think other games like the Call of duty Franchise is grossly over-rated (even though i've purchased all of them) ;-)

Hi G, did you read my brieff review? (comment #1)

Here's what I wrote:

To hit the ball adjust the cursor until you are satisfied that you are lined up correctly. There's a small circular indicator that you can see in front of the ball you are aiming at. This represents where your white ball will travel to. You can move the mouse to get an impression of where to hit the white ball. Once lined up, click the mouse. Then pull back on the mouse, this will enable you to adjust the power of your shot. The further you pull back your mouse the harder the stroke will be.

I hope this clarifies your question?

Virus : Variant.Symmi.8289 (Engine A)
"Usually due to an overly sensitive anti malware suite."
It's simple... don't install if you don't trust it.

.......................Moderator Comment.................

That's the best advice anyone can give. that said, the reputation of the game giveaway site is untarnished with zero games being given away with malware infections. The giveaway team stand to lose their reputation if they weren't so vigilant in testing all games given away here. They use several anti-malware suites to test all games and applications given away.

Because of their zero record of malware they have a very good standing with all the major search engines. You can usually find someones quote amongst the first few hits if you make a search using Google or one of the other better known search engines. Just go over to the forums, copy a paragraph and see if you get a hit.

I wanted to tell the GGOTD how much I have appreciated your offerings and in reading all the reviews during the 2 years I've been coming (as well as the forums). I've wanted to thank Whiterabbit aka Stephen for his tireless reviews and moderating duties. I wanted to wish everyone on the GGOTD team and all those that visit and support the team a very Merry Christmas and a Happy safe New Year.

Hello Meagain, check out the FAQ's section which you can find in the Sticky section of the Game Discussion forums. There are several things you could try. go into compatibility mode and make sure the Admin box is checked. Try disabling visial themes and/or Display largee scaling. I'd also check to see if the game conflicts with any background programs by turning non-essential ones off one at a time to see if the game will work.

Did you try to play the game using just the mouse?

reglib.dll by Flash Video MX

Anyone who has the Memory Access Violation is that this file is too old.

The driver is from 2008 there is a more updated one from 2011 online
which I replaced on my system and also works.

There was also another billards game that had simmilar issues see post http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/2636

Virtual PC and non admin accounts will not go to well with this game.

Hi WR & GGOTD Team,

Boy this must be my lucky day, since I Never check GGOTD on Mondays thru Friday, only on weekends ... did Not expect a Free Game today so, I was Pleasantly surprised. Thanks!

Installed A-OK on Vist Hm Prem., X64. As mentioned before I did get "Memory Access Violation" also ... Right-Click on 8balls.exe and choose "Run as Admin" and that did the Trick ... playing it in XP mode did not help. The game looks good and it is fun, I played few minutes of it.

So, since I got suspicious when this program Demanded to be run as "Admin" ... I ran Virus Scan on Pool8balls.zip, 8balls.exe, & reglib.dll and luckily they all turned out to be Clean ... No Virus or Trojans.

WR & GGOTD Thanks & MERRY XMAS folks!

I have the game working but. I can not find anyway to adjust it so it plays in a window or takes advantage of my screen resolution. There are so many problems with this game I do not know where to begin in listing them.

do not like that the cue does not show a directional line so I can tell where my shot is going. I find that the in-line of sight shot help options are ok to mediocre at best. I did not find them intuitive or easy to use. I found them more of a hindrance than a help in making my shots in game.

The birds eye view is ok but not very good. There is no feel to the cue at all. I can not tell if the spin I am putting on the ball is going to work or not.

I can not angle my cue to hit the cue ball at a upward or downward angle. The couple of times I tried to put some omph in to my shot on the cue ball to get it to go around another ball or even to make a Masse shot I could not.

This is one game where I can make a shot at the pool hall but I can not figure out how to get it to work in the game. I find this game to be less than ideal in game play.

I find that the on-line 8ball & 9ball games at www.Pogo.com to be a bit more fun than this one. Heck you could even say that the yahoo messenger 8ball game is more fun to play than this one.

Game play 3 out of 10
music 4 out of 10
trick shots 1 out of 10
help file usefulness 2 out of 10
tutorial or game play instructions 0 out of 10

Would I buy this game no chance. Would I recommend this game to any one, no way. I think there are way better billiard games available on the internet some are even free so all in all I suggest going with anything else but this one.

If you miss this game give away don't worry about it. I can tell now that you are not missing much. I have Un-installed & deleted this game.

Thanks Fly game but no thanks. 1 big thumbs down. Side note this has got to be the worst 8 Ball billiards game I have ever played. in 10 years of internet gaming I have played some real stinkers but this one Peyew!

Thank you for your useful feedback Rick, i hope the developer takes note of your feedback.

Personally I thought the game was acceptable even though it was very basic. I had no problems playing the game, granted it's not the best but I've played a lot worse than this.

Check to see if that the check box in compatibility mode is checked. Also read the FAQ's that I've posted in the Game Discussion forums. Not the FAQ's in the main forum. I've linked to it in my review above (see comment #1)

@Whiterabbit

This game is built with wrap around objects so should you want to mod the table or the balls... I'm sure you'll see how easy it is to do.

Which is a good thing

• Add different table types <---- Easiest Suggestion you made
• Include different environments <--- The files are 3d studio based so I'm sure the developer could make a blank template to sell more copies of the game

• Include different rule sets <--- This one haven't figured out how it was done..
• Include billiards as a choice of game type <---- Same for this one..

Now the video folder intrigues me... I was wishing for in game videos at the bar oh well =) also the E and R keys change ball size and pool cue type.

Would seriously love a help document for this game...

But all in all this game was well built to be able to expand on...

I was excited to see this. I had a pool game years ago on my DOS machine, but haven't seen anything that I liked since then.
I downloaded and installed it, eager to play, but when I tried to play, I had the "memory access violation" that Frank Fridd had. I tried to play the game as single or 2 player, and all skill levels, no luck. Then I right clicked on the icon and clicked "run as administrator" and it worked!
It takes a little time and practice to get the controls to work comfortably, but in the end, it's worth it.
Thanks Game Giveaway!

Glad you got it to work. The admin trick usually fixes things. :)

I had the same problem as 5 and 7(memory access violation). I checked the forum. It said to Run as Administrator. I did that and it worked for me. I really like this type of game. Thanks and MERRY CHRISTMAS.

"already have some games purchased over the last decade" - could you offer some alternatives that people might look into?

......................Moderator Comment..................

Times are hard Fred, developers are struggling; just take a look at what the developer THQ (who are in serious trouble) did last month and sold over $400 worth of games (via the humble bundle) for less than $6. Many of the developers who used to give games away here no longer exist. Arcade games have come down in price from an average of $19,99 to around $6 over the last four years and AAA games haven't changed in price in over 15 years. The giveaway team do heir best to get free games for the community. If you aren't satisfied with whats on offer then go to one of the sites I've listed at the end of my short review and go purchase a game. There are some fabulous offers available at this time.

Good games are made with money.

My virus checker stopped an infected file from this download and quarantined it (pih.dll).
This caused a failed installation - "The archive is either in unknown format or damaged".

Pity - it looked like a good game!

All game giveaways are throughly checked. As i've sad countless times the project has been running since Dec 2006 with over a thousand games given away and there has never been a positive report of malware. All reports have been false positives. Usually due to an overly sensitive anti malware suite.

Downloaded fine & installed fine. I thank fly games and GAOTD for this game sadly I have not been able to play it every time I click to start a new game it crashes. So, no matter what choice I make so even if I choose easy, difficult or hard settings it will crash on the start up listing the memory error

this game simply does not work on my Windows XP Pro SP3 Machine.

I can't find any reason for it to crash. It does make a huge mess of my display and my desktop icons. I use a 1280X1024 32 bit 75Mhz screen resolution on my primary monitor and 1024X768 on my secondary monitor.

So when I run the game this is what happens it crashes listing it simply as a error. their is no code or anything listed it just simply says memory access violation.

I have shut down all my secondary applications and run it only with my Agnitum Outposts Security Suite running at the same time as I am trying to load this game.

So if any one of oyu guys out their has any words of wisdom on how to change this games auto start screen size, preferably to a windowed state and to one that wont mess up my monitor or my desktop icons it would be helpful for me. Now for my secondary problem.

How do I get the game to play with out it crashing on me?

I love pool games and own none at all but this would of been a great christmas present, if It would work =(

Please advise me and help me get this game to work.

tl dr

Game crashes stating memory access violation.

Game starts full screen does not use my monitors specified settings it trys to load its own making a mess of my desktop

I need to change it so the game starts in windowed mode.

If no fix can be found it will be deleted and given a thumbs down. So far I am very unimpressed with this game and give it a ZERO on the my 1 to 10 fun scale

If a fix can be found & I can get this game to play I will repost with a complete review.

Thank you for your feedback Rick, sorry you are having problems. It plays on three of my computers. Not tested it on XP though. Try going into compatibility mode and ticking boxes. ;-)

No Help in the Forum.....

After selction of the Gamemode the Mousecursor is gone and nothing happens, just a blue Screen with a Pool-Table.
When starting TaskManager the Game crashes with a memory access violation.

Downloaded and installed on Win7 64bit; no problems. Just have to figure out how to play it by using space bar; clicking etc. But it does work on Win7pro 64 bit.

You can play the game using the mouse only (though to change view you will need to use your keyboard unless you have programmable buttons on our mouse). :)

Hello

I have downloaded this gamw twice but when I try to play the game I get a error which states Memory access violation. It is after clicking on the play the easy game. Is this a problem or is it just my computer? I have downloaded a lot of your games but never had any problem before.

Hello Frank. Go to the game discussion forums and look at the FAQ's thread that I've posted in the stick section. you may find some help there. Try going into compatibility and make sure the admin box is checked also try plating it in XP mode. :)
