Best thing about it was the online mode. The "easy kids mode" was waaaaaaay too hard for kids. The very best chess game/chess learning tool out there is Majestic Chess. Unfortunately it is not free, but worth buying imo. Your children will actually enjoy playing it too (but later on it gets much more difficult to cater to experienced players).

Thanks niteraven; though you do yourself an injustice I personally have found your comments incisive and to the point and interesting to read. I do hope you continue as it’s always great to read several view points on any game.

Don't waste your time. There are a lot better for free every day.

Earlier, I posted a comment about the fact that GMChess3 froze after one or two moves when I played it on my laptop, but ran OK on my wife's. I played a few games on my wife's laptop. The "Quick hint" (your "best" reply to the computer's move highlighted in green) is on by default. Following these hints sometimes (but not always), I lost at the "Easy adult" level. The more I followed the hints, the more quickly I lost. I found how to turn off these hints and played again. Having just lost a rook through a stupid mistake, I clicked "UNDO" (which had previously worked), but there was no response. I then saw that, although it was in a clear winning position, the computer had resigned. (I had turned off the annoying voice and sound effects.) GMChess3 also froze at this point, and no buttons would respond.

Nice, except that it's buggy! It said "Game over" after I simply took one of the opponent's pieces. So I did "undo" and repeated the same move. "Game Over". No kings were even in check and it was only about 20 moves into the game. I did "undo" and tried a different move. My pawn c2 to c4. Opponent's pawn at b4 moved to the empty space at c3 and TOOK my pawn at c4! Buggy! Not worth playing!

I had first downloaded to flash drive. When I downloaded to desktop, it worked fine. I'm trying it now. There seems to be a good choice of levels.

Downloaded GMChess3 and told it to install in C:\Program Files\Games (not the default). No problem with this, nor with creating a shortcut to the application program. Fired it up and told computer to take white. After one move on each side, GMChess3 froze, and I had to Ctrl-Alt-Del and kill the process. On a second attempt, it froze half way through white's (computer's) first move. It works fine on my wife's computer. I run XP Home; she runs XP Pro. Any suggestions?

I downloaded. When I opened the folder it said to insert the last CD which I couldn't do! Does anyone have a solution?

#11 You say there are better freeware chess games. I looked a while back and didn't see any.

To Mack (comment no 14), Fisher style is a set or rules that Fisher designed for variation/challenge.

But too bad it does not allow you to install it on a server.

But, I will get through that.
Good Game

Oh... and you don't NEED an uninstaller because the game is merely unpacked into its folder. Just delete that folder and the game is uninstalled. :)

The speech is VERY annoying. Thankfully it can be turned off. (First thing to do!)

3D view isn't playable very well. Some smaller pieces almost disappear behind the larger ones.

Screen resolution is quite low (1024x768).
BTW: Checkmark "1024x768" in Options/VisualFX if you want to play fullscreen.

Otherwise... it's just a chess game.

This game uses an MS Access database with 443219 games, needing 398MB space on your harddisk. As far as I see, this is the main thing that consumes space, the overall game having 450MB. I think I cannot compete with such a knowledge base ;)

Vista already has a chess game, but this is a nice version as well. You're playing against a different "opponent" which makes it a lot more fun!

@#32.. Whiterabbit

I'm so glad to see that you are staying, Stephen. I try to offer my opinions on games, but they are just that... opinions. You bring a vast wealth of knowledge of the games and the links that I could never do justice to.. and obviously I was way off base on the populatirty of THIS game.

I just got this system and I was dealing with a win 98 for years and years. While that in itself is not a bad thing at all, this computer was.. hence I didn't get to play a lot of games. Its for that reason that I always look for your reviews, your links and your knowledge. I have just stepped out of the stone age and I seek enlightenment! :)

I know this post should probably be in the forums or something.. but I just wanted to say publicly that I'm glad you're staying. You are a great asset to this community.

Sincerely,

Mark aka niteraven

Seems sweet from my brief playing. I'm at a child's level (but better than a monkey)...not sure how I feel about that.

Confusing visuals can be overcome by choosing a 2D clipart view. I love it.

Downside, it froze in midgame, could be because I turned highlighting off in midgame. Hope it isn't a permanent glitch.

I have an XP Pro system and the game downloaded and installed with no problems what so ever. It is a folder on my desktop containing all files so no uninstall is needed. All I have to do is incinerate or delete the folder and it is gone!

The game is only playable for me on 2D but there it runs quite well. My only problem was getting badly beaten on the child level. (It has been a LONG time since I played! LOL) This game is a keeper! Thank You Very Much for making it available.

Michael

This is indeed a previous offer, but not as a game. It was offered on Aug 5 07 as a GiveAwayOfTheDay. I thought it was weird that GAOTD was offering a game but since I haven't play chess for 25 years I was itching for a game with good AI.

I downloaded it at the time and still have it installed. The game works beautifully, all the options that you want (if you don't like the voice, mute your sound) and Internet games. A neighbor has been asking me to play chess with him, but we have only been able to play once because of schedule problems. I am going to his house to tell him to download it because you can save the game at any time and load it later.

The AI is tough. I stopped playing as a teenager because I got tired of winning all the time. I couldn't find a good player and I couldn't go around chasing professionals (I wasn't that good anyway, there just were not good players that I knew). It took me three turns to check mate my neighbor the one time we played (he underestimated me) so now he wants revenge.

Thank you for offering a good game and thank you Joe for Winboard as well. I'll check it out and see if it is easier to play Internet games because I am having trouble figuring out how to play against my neighbor. DHCP keeps changing IP numbers and I can't find an option to let us both log into a public server.

seems a nice game
though, personally i prefer to play with my Chessmaster 11 from Ubisoft which also includes a learning academy, a wide variety of 'tunings' and a very powerful chess engine.

However, it costs twice as much as Grand Master Chess and it is about 1.2Gb in size. So, Grand Master Chess is free for today and is very light in terms of size compared to Chessmaster 11.

Grand Master Chess is a really good start for newbies who wants to try chess for free...

I got this last time it was offered - not a bad game, but I prefer the Chess Titans that comes with Windows Vista Premium.

If you don't need all the pretty graphics, try WinBoard, a front-end for GNU Chess. The download below has everything you need.

http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/winboard/winboard-4_2_7b.exe

It's open-source, so it will always be free.

and then put ijl15.dll wherever ijl15.dll is supposed to go.

An Absolutely excellent chess game!! Very colorful interface, attractive design, option to have movements spoken, and MP3 player to listen to your music folder adds to make this game the best chess game I've ever had. My one and only gripe is that the computer resigns upon losing his queen, so that you're denied the chance to take all his pieces one by one and leave his king till last :-\

But hey, it's free! and cos is no installer with today's giveaway - you can add the extracted folder to your back up archive, and still have this game for next time you reinstall windows :-)

Following my mini statement yesterday I received a very heartfelt Email from someone from this community who is in a similar position to myself, though I think probably worse; that email as well as the response from many of you (both here and in the forums) and also asking the Admins for some forewarning as lead me to reconsider in part my statement from yesterday. I'm going to take a week or maybe two off from commenting (unless I get some early warnings about upcoming games) then will hopefully return refreshed with hopefully a new look that will be less padded with the mechanics and more a genuine review.

I'm not really a chess buff  so can't really comment on todays giveaway other than to say it looks reasonable to me and definitely is better than last weeks game. I did post several links to freeware chess games when the pevious chess game was given away last week. You can check out these by following the link below:

This is the same game called Grand Master Chess 3 that was given away not too long ago. I enjoy it all the time, and it wakes me up in the morning by challenging the mind. #4 you can change the game from Windowed mode to increase its size.
