I know it is a bit delayed, but I really wanted to give the game a good go round before posting.
I thought I would just play for a half hour while the clothes were in the dryer....I ended up playing through four loads of laundry!

This game is so simple and cute...Very good time waster, but not very nice if you have other weekend chores to get through...lol

My four girls absolutely love this game as well. I showed it to them when they came home from Grandma's house and it is so nice to be able to have an untimed option. It let's them play with it and when they get confident with that, they can go to the timed version...

I don't mind the music at all, and I love the fact that if you don't make your goal for a level, you start with the money you have accumulated to that point and also you keep all the animals that you didn't round up at the clock end...
What I find usefull is if I know I am not going to make the goal, I ignore the roundup time so I can keep ALL of my animals...Nice fat pigs and sheep with 5-600$ worth of wool!

This game deserves a 10 out of 10 rating!

Thank you so much for the opportunity to play it. I am definately keeping this one.

I've been visiting GOTD daily for months now, and have only found two programs I really wanted to download. The first one crashed my system, and this one, while it doesn't crash the system or cause a reboot, just does not want to work.
While I can hear the game music playing, see the time cursor and then the pointer cursor, I get nothing but a black screen. My OS is WinXP Pro and I even tried changing some of the compatibility settings, just to see if it would help anything, but no success.
Perhaps it's an issue of my video card being old and/or incompatible?

Anyway, it's a shame as I'd like to have tried the game beyond a black screen with music.

Hey, Metalshop #39 ... thanks for the heads up on the 'Retro Records' game. How I missed that the first time around is a mystery, especially for an audiophile with thousands of vinyls (and a few recordings on aluminum) in a collection dating back ..oh..80 years or so.

Joshua, I truly hope your spirit of play is exercised on future games. Any developer that lists 'vivid imagination' as a system requirement is destined for a long, gratifying and successful career.

Giveaway team, keep an eye on this youngster .. perhaps invest in him; he shares your gift for creative genius. Thank you for the introduction and another great giveaway, too.

- Yes, I also have Win 98SE, and it keeps giving me an error message before hanging up. Too bad that I will miss out on what seems a fun game due to a technical glitch.
- Does GAOTD offer a grace period other than just the day it is issued, for situations like this? If not, it would be most appreciated.
- Note that this is the first program I have had troubles with :-(. If anyone wants to see the error message and offer an idea of what can be done to fix it, please write. (Merril, I was unable to connect to you to take advantage of your generous offer - see post #14)
- As for the giveaway, GAOTD, thanks just the same for the offer, and for all the other programs. Always appreciated!
- Congratulations, Joshua, for a novel idea, and for getting good reviews from a relatively tough crowd.

...another day .... another game for toddlers.

Must admit tho', it looks to be whole deal better programmed then the mp3 extravaganza silliness of yesterday.

It is another game that has been around since the summer of 2005.
Yes old games doesn't need to mean bad games. BUT, if a game is older it should come down in price no matter if it was a big success or not.
Example: GTA San Andreas may or may not be to your taste but it was worked on by an actual software house. To play the game from start to finish can easily take you more then 100 hours. It has everything from an ingame poolgame to playable arcademachines to races and flying fighter planes in a 3D world. Nowadays you can pick up a copy as cheap as 8 USD instead of the original of 60 USD. FunkyFarm was made by one guy and the price is still the same as it was way back when.
http://www.downloadjunction.com/product/store/15041/index.html

You might say that I'm comparing apples with oranges. If so then please do a reality check by going to the following site.
http://www.games-soft.net/
Look at the games offered there. They are all shareware games. Look at the screenshots. Look at the screenshots of most, if not all, games offered here. Compare them. Notice the difference in quality? Then check the prices of them both.

If you are half awake you should notice why I sigh when I read a sentence such as "These serious concepts are dressed up in gorgeous graphics with upbeat tune...". You should understand why there's people like myself that find the "normal" price for the offered games here offensive.

This is not a game that adults will play unless they are really hard up or are so tired that they just want some brainless entertainment.
Most parents and grandparents will be hard pressed to find a kid young enough to actually enjoy this game above the age of 6 who doesn't think this is crap in comparison with free online games or there class mates Xbox/PS2/Wii.

This is Joshua, the developer. Thanks for the comments everyone, it definitely makes my day to see you all appreciate something off the beaten path. I am actually working on a sequel to the game which addresses many of the concerns voiced here (difficulty, options screen, feedback), plus adds a lot of new animals and other content, so keep an eye open for it.

For those of you having problems with the game locking up, I apologize, updating your video driver should fix this though.

So good to see some "fresh meat". Newer ideas, better quality. I even tried the "Retro Records" game linked beside it, and fell in love with that - even better, the purchase link for that game is ONLY 4.99 US. For that price and a game that fun, I was happy to support the developer. I would urge everyone here to do the same. Encourage good developers to continue to develop games, and to offer them here!!

#28 Hi Swan, sorry for delayed reply, I had some bad news this afternoon.

BCCode 100000d1 is often a device driver problem but is a common error signature in registry problems and not as specific as some of the others. I had a question recently with actually the EXACT same error details and it turned out that the fault lay with a corrupt driver for a memory stick.

Because the error code is ambiguous, if you right click on "My Computer" and then Manage > Event Viewer > Application and double click on the latest stored errors it will give you information about the fault, hopefully it will be with a program as opposed to hardware - it should say something like this

Faulting application example.exe, version x.x.x.x, faulting module example.exe, version x.x.x.x, fault address 0x00002a87.

To stop your computer from rebooting itself each time (instead you'll get a blue screen up with the stop code on) go to Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup & Recovery > Settings and uncheck "Automatically restart".

Is this continuing to happen with all downloads? If you download something to check external from the site (from a known safe site obviously - eg download a small random file from download.com) then you will know if this is a hardware failure with downloads as opposed to today's from here. It concerns me that it happened with the download from the software GOTD site as well. But the Event Viewer will hopefully confine it for you to a specific program, sometimes even out of date software can cause it, so have a look there first.

This game actvated, installed, and played with no problems. I use Windows xp. I think it will be a fun game to play and I plan to keep it. As a sidenote for anyone that downloaded and kept the Glary utiliteies. I opened it up tonight. Despite the warnings about the software being as is with no updates I clicked on check for updates. My version was updated to the latest version. Those that kept it may want to try it. I like this program. As for games I would truely appreciate some repeats of games that were here before I was aware of this site. I would love to have Aquaball and that minigolf game. Take care and have fun everyone

After downloading without a hitch and installing also with not one problem, I found that I couldn't play it as there was no way to turn off the music and no way to play the game in windowed mode.
I have a couple of suggestions that might make a further build a little bit better.
Let the music be an _option_(please), and have sounds otherwise as others have suggested(like farm noises, bird or nature sounds, wolf calls, etc..)
Also have the window mode be available.
I am sad as this looked like a VERY promising game!
MANY thanks to GGOTD and to this new developer (you have a winner here(after the couple of tweaks) as it looks like your other games are too!

It was kind of cute. I'd probably give it a 6. If anyone has overly-sensitive small kids, I wouldn't recommend it though, because I found it a little disturbing when the wolves disposed of the sheep. I would have preferred that they quietly carried them off into the woods than that they wrestle them to death.

#15...the halos come and go. If they have a halo, they are part of a flock, and the wolves won't attack them. Once the halo goes away, it's sheep season again.

Overall, not a bad game. No violence, so it's great for kids, the music and sound effects aren't overwhelming, the graphics are decent, and well, it just sucked up over an hour of my time, lol.

Silly fun, but fun nonetheless. I'll give it a 6/10.

From even before you install the game you get a sense of the joy that is to come as the entire "Terms and Conditions" you have to agree to before installation will complete are

“I promise I will spend a little less time working every day and a little more time playing games and listening to music.”

:-D

Upon albeit reluctantly ;-) agreeing to these terms, the game installed perfectly and opens with a gorgeous picture of a barn, painted in acrylic type paint. Every so often, evil-looking yellow eyes flash from within the dark depths of the barn, adding a sense of uncertainty and fear to the otherwise sunny picture with its Monty Python style font title and pleasant music that indeed cannot be turned off (although #12 you could just turn off your speakers). The screen cannot be minimised either which is a shame as in a long game you may need to use the computer for something else which is not possible without exiting, although the game does save for your return. There is no "windowed" mode, it is full screen only.

When first playing the game you are encouraged to play using the tutorial which is vital if you want to know what is going on. The tutorial is great and very encouraging, it shows you what to do and when you do it gives very positive messages of recognition before moving on to the next point.

The game is all about managing a farm; buying livestock and their supplies costs money and shearing the livestock, slaughtering them and rounding them up makes money. This is an excellent way of promoting simple business skills to children without them realising they are being educated!

You can buy pigs, sheep (complete with halos(!)), a dog, grass to nourish the sheep, swill for the pigs and fences. The animals need to be fed regularly, so responsibility is also taught, the pigs turning green and thin when hungry, the sheep not growing more wool without food. Additionally you have shears that will make you money from sold wool and (gulp) an axe to slaughter pigs and sheep that will provide income from their meat. Being a vegetarian, I found it very hard to slaughter even cartoon animals, particularly when on mouse-over of each animal you are given their names - killing Helen, Barbara, Miles and Julie is not an easy or pleasant task (!) yet I was not able to earn enough to progress onto futher levels from selling wool alone so butchering is a necessary part of the game. It stands to teach children about from where their roast dinners come but also perhaps stands parents in the "nut cutlet" aisle of the local supermarket after the game has been played......

Wolves are the danger in the game, their foreboding presence indicated by darting yellow eyes in the woodland that surrounds play. The wolves are kept away by your Old English Sheepdog who goes anywhere you put his bone. If careful attention is not kept, before you know it Brandon will be utilising his halo in Sheep Heaven, although at first the sinisterness seems to somewhat lessen when wolves are called Justin and Andy! :-)

The game is joyful to play, attention to detail has been carefully planned; watch the way the pigs flock to the swill each time you buy a new bucket and the way they turn pink and plump upon eating, even the stars that appear next to each menu item on mouse-over at the start of the game fits in with the style and the noises the animals makes are realistic.

Possibly not a game that most adults will play regularly, if you are comfortable with your children slaughtering albeit cartoon animals (with names) without it adversely affecting them then this will teach them a lot about the basics of life, namely working for profit, managing a business and the meat industry. These serious concepts are dressed up in gorgeous graphics with upbeat tune and a game that oozes fun and tongue in cheek, fabulous humour and this game is therefore an absolute must to experience.

The screenshots provided above with the introduction to this game tell you enough about the game, with respect to graphics. Not the best I’ve seen, but for an arcade game of this type, they are fine. When you first unzip and start the installation process you’ll be presented with the license agreement; it’s probably the most original license agreement I’ve ever seen, lol:

It states:

I promise I will spend a little less time working every day and a little more time playing games and listening to music.

The game menu is very simple, with only three options; Play, Tutorial and Quit. There is no options menu, which means no toggles to turn the music and sound effects off, no instructions on how to play the game, apart from the tutorial, and there are no descriptions of the tools and other things you can buy in the shop.

Game Menu:

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/funky%20farm/Funkygamemenu.gif

With no instructions you’ll probably start with the tutorial button. This is a good idea (ob’) as you will be told via about 15 prompt windows what to do. The game is easy to learn, but don’t think it’s easy to progress through the levels once you get past the first few. There seems to be no specific goal except for attaining a certain amount of profit before the end of each level. If you don’t gain the stated profit then the game ends. Each level is timed. And you start with a new higher target and a specific amount of cash, which varies with each level depending upon what you made in the previous round and what you had deducted for the tools you purchased. You can see these figures at the bottom of the playing area.

Tutorial Images:

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/funky%20farm/Funkytutorial.gif

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/funky%20farm/Funkytutorial002.gif

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/funky%20farm/Funkytutorial003.gif

The tutorials take you through the basic controls. The game is reasonably simple. You make money by either shearing your sheep to produce wool, or slaughtering them with a cleaver. You can purchase more animals during each level up to the limit of your funds. As levels progress different animals become available; (although the only farm animals I’ve seen so far are sheep, pigs and Sheep dogs as well as a wolf/fox)

You must keep the grassy area relatively free of muddy areas because if your sheep are on them, they no longer produce wool. The longer you leave each sheep grazing, the more money the wool will be worth. The same goes for the pigs. The longer they eat the swill that you buy in, the more money they will be worth, either by slaughtering them, or rounding them up near the end of the game. (You will be prompted to do this)

You start the game with sheep, and then pigs are added in level 2. Level three sees the introduction of foxes and sheep dogs. Provided you attain the specified target by the end of each level you are allowed to progress to the next level.

In game images:

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/funky%20farm/Funkyingameshotlevel3.gif

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/funky%20farm/Funkyingameshotlevel004.gif

The end of level screen (see below) tells you how much you earned. The target amount is deducted from this. You will also be given tips to help you attain your targets, so make sure you read these before progressing to the next level. At the end of each level you will be given the opportunity to purchase better or new tools, see the shop image below) using the profit you made in the previous level. Spend this wisely, because it becomes progressively harder to attain your targets as the game progresses. (I lost after level 3, my excuse is that I was stopping to write this review) :) For example at the end of level 1 you can spend your money on better shears, a bigger cleaver and a bigger swill bucket for your pigs. At the end of level 2 you are also able to buy fox repellent and metal fencing to protect your live stock. The improved tools enable them to regenerate quicker after use. This process can be speeded up by using the pumps that you will find by the side of the tool box, so if your funds are low, think carefully about what tools and equipment you are going to purchase. There is a bar indicator to show how much each tool has been regenerated after use. This bar must be full before you can use the tool again. Before the level ends you will be prompted to round up your stock and take them to the pens. A rope icon appears in the tool box when it is time and you also get a verbal signal. You don’t necessarily have to stop what you are doing immediately, but the more animals you have the longer it takes to round them up. This is compounded because you have to round them up in a specific order which is dictated to you via a small window that pops up over the main playing area.

You can pause the game by pressing escape. To return to the game click on play or the escape button; which will return you to where you left off. Quitting the game will save your progress to the last completed level. There is only one profile available. So if you are part way through the game, no one else can play it, otherwise they will overwrite your save, or continue playing your save.

End of Level:

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/funky%20farm/funkyendoflevelscreen.gif

The Shop:

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/funky%20farm/funkyshop.gif

Conclusion:

I found myself enjoying this game for a short period. The ability to save your progress makes this a nice little time filler in between other things. I don’t think I’ll get seriously into it, but I will play it again. My daughter is likely to enjoy playing this more than me apart from the slaying aspect. (Because we are Vegetarians, and she’s very vocal {even though she’s only 6} about how horrible it is to kill other animals…. )

Personally, I think it will take some skill to progress past the early levels. I only went as far as level 3 before deciding to write up the review. If there are more animals and tools to discover as well as a change of scenery occasionally I think this game will be well worth keeping, especially if you’re family orientated. I haven’t seen anything quite like this; however my main purchases apart from the ‘big’ $50 games have been arkanoid, arkanoid, and arkanoid, lol. So I’m sure there are similar games. This is definitely a keeper for my family; for now at least.

The music is a little cheesy, but not seriously annoying. If you go to the game folder and open it up you’ll find a music folder that contains .ogg files. The music ones are the larger files. These can be replaced with something more to your liking. (always save the originals as a back up though) If it’s going to be specifically for the children, then maybe something such as Old McDonald or Ba Ba Black Sheep, lol. You will need a converter, which those of you who have been visiting the sister site for a while will probably have already. If you don’t, go check the freeware library. :)

The sound effects are severely lacking. You do get the sound of a sheep when you first buy one and place it on the playing area, but the sound isn’t utilized for anything else such as back ground noises. You also get an initial sound effect whenever you get new animals, such as pigs and sheep dogs It would have been nice to have had the sound of a farm as background sound; probably as opposed to the music. There’s no toggle for the sound or music, so to control it use your speaker control.

The graphics aren’t cutting edge, but for this style of game they are acceptable. There’s no windowed mode, and finally, the game is fully mouse controlled.

Thank you to the Gamegive away team and SortaSoft for this game. Everyone have a great day. It's the weekend, yeeaaahhh

i thought i'd comment tonight on this one after trying it. After installing it and 'it' went through its activation [it caused my system to hang bad]. I cold booted and tried to run the program again and it worked just fine.
This is a pretty basic game with not alot of perks. But i gotta tell ya-> its nice to try somethin different. So ya got all these animals goin, feedim' them and all, and they got names and stuff [hehe], well ya cut off their wool, or cutm' up with the cleaver as food. Its kinda funny, because you can fattn up a nice size pig by buyn it and the feed stuff [then a wolf comes and eats the sucker]. There is no violence in the game.
I got to level 5 and came to an impass-> it gets a bit hard.
Seems that the price of goods you can buy at the store go up in cost depending on the amount of money made the round before "#$!@$"
Sheep have a halo over their head [weird].
Dang wolf ate my dog.
I reccomend this game because its way different then the usual, and its fun in its own quiky way.
recoomendations: future versions wouldn't 'adjust the cost of goods at the store' & would have a shotgun in the store for that dang wolf that ate fido.

#7 Hi Swan,

This sounds potentially serious and, hopefully, uninstalling the 2 programs will have stopped this for good. If it DOES happen again, when you get the "The system has recovered from a serious error" message, please click "error details" and post them, I am a technical adviser on a website and will be able to give more information about what has happened to your pc with the details of the error.

It does seem strange that the second installation caused the same problem and I wonder if this would happen externally of anything to do with GOTD - have you tried downloading something else from another site to see if it occurs then? It may not have anything to do with the game or software offered here today and could be a problem downloading as a whole or a virus/spyware causing the problem, in which case update and run your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs. I am sure you have both but if not, visit http://free.grisoft.com for AVG's full free ones that will find anything untoward and protect you in the future.

Finally, if the problem continues and there is no evident virus etc, it may be wise to System Restore back to yesterday or a time when this was not happening. Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. But do please post the Error Details if it happens again as I will then be able to give a more specific answer about the cause of the problem itself.

Hope you get it sorted,

Merril

BAD Bobby! I should not make assumptions...when I mentioned 'beady little eyes' in the forest, I jumped to conclusions and ID'd the wolf as the culprit.

It has been brought to my attention that the beady little eyes belong to PETA, who have been monitoring your activities and are poised to raid your farm. Unless the ravenous wolf finds 'em first, of course.

The first thing I do with every game I play is turn off the music. There's nowhere to deal with the music on this one, so I am highly agitated with it, already. (not to mention that I am an early riser. I started this at 3 in the morning, so quiet is highly appreciated, so I don't wake my daughter.)

While still in tutorial mode, the game stopped working for some reason. Except of course, for the music. Nothing clicked, except menu, though the timer was still counting. So I had to close the game and reopen. Second try, right at the end of the tutorial, it started lagging. Another highly irritating thing, when timing is of the essence.

If the game would play correctly, and I could turn off the music, I might be able to enjoy playing.

Fun little game, if a bit child-oriented. The developer is obviously just getting started but will be successful in his endeavors if his 'spirit of play' is any indication.

The game's requirements: Win98, 2K, ME, XP; DirectX 8.0 or better; a vivid imagination.

The game's EULA: I promise I will spend a little less time working every day and a little more time playing games and listening to music.

The game itself includes several hungry sheep, chubby and equally hungry pigs and the inevitable wicked wolf. Your job, as farmer, is to feed the critters, shear the sheep, get the porky pigs to market and foil the dastardly deeds of the wicked wolf (if you goof, there is quite a whirlwind of activity and your sheep disappear ... auugh!). Watch the treeline for the wolf's beady little eyes.

If you make enough money from your sheep-shearing and pig-marketing, you will be able to buy fences and wolf deterrent (although the deterrent didn't work for me...guess my caffiene levels are too low at 5 a.m. to notice any controls for the stuff).

It's a cute little game and a fun time-waster. Better for the younger kids (my youngest grandkidlet is 7 and he will probably consider himself 'too old' for it).

Best of all: it is NOT a Double Games offering!

#2,#3 (Dak)... So you downloaded, installed, read instructions, played ten levels, then uninstalled, and left another message in less than 13 minutes? Must be really short 45 second levels, huh?

Its quite alright. A little too easy but my kids like it. They especially love to let the wolves get the sheep. ;)

Swan:
Try grabbing the STOP error code. This can either be retrieved through the Event Log, or by disabling automatic reboots (through the System Control Panel.)

Good morning everyone!

The first download was from the mirror site - I activated and installed it without issue - however the moment I began playing the tutorial, it instantaneously rebooted my computer.

It also advised me that my machine had recovered from a serious error. I didn't attribute this to the game at first naturally, however it happened when I began playing the game again. At this point, I uninstalled the game.

I waited for 15 mins to see if my machine would reboot again for no reason, but it didn't.

The second download was from GotD this time - there were no issues with the download/activation or installation process - however the whole problem happened again!

Uninstalled - again.

I'm running Windows XP Pro and I've had no other instantaneous shutdowns since the second un-installation.

I'd appreciate a little assistance please,
~ Swan

I love their terms and conditions = "I promise I will spend a little less time working every day and a little more time playing games and listening to music."

Heh made me laugh :)
