I like it! I care more about the play than about how it looks. This is all about skill; no luck at all. That's appealing.

I wish you could go back a replay a level completed earlier. I'd like to try for a "complete" win on some of the levels. I'm only at level 8 so far.

I do love these logic games and this is a good one but there's no way I'd pay for it. Well, maybe if I was really desperate for a short game I might fork out the 99 cents....but I'd never pay more than that. I hate games that are so short.
Other than that, the graphics are great, and the game is cute and fun. I love the little gibberish....that's cute.....it reminds me of the little girl in Miracle on 34th Street, when Santa's teaching her to play by acting like a monkey. Thanks for the freebie!

hmm. no idea what changed. i thought i'd give the game another try, and this time it advanced to level 2 (and 3!) fine. i tried various settings for a1ctl and gamebooster, in case they were the culprits, but could not replicate the problem. maybe it was just a mercury retrograde thing. i'm enjoying the game now. thanks again for offering this!

(system info: winxp sp3 on an acer d250, 2gb ram, 1.6ghz, 1024x600 resolution, gamebooster 3.3.1, a1ctl 1.0)

Size comparison: The EXE projector is 4.6x the size of the original game SWF, unwrapped and decompressed. If I was carrying Flash games around, I'd have a single standalone projector and a whole bunch of Flash files. Just drag the file on the projector and it should work.

Yes, this is the same version as last time. I still have it and play it on occasion. It's challenging and fun.
Ball speed and distance is determined by how close to the ball you click. Same for moving the boxes.

How does this differ from the previous one offered here. I forgot I already had it and when I was installing it asked if I wanted to replace the file as it already existed.
I just canceled and it seems it was there anyway. When it asked me to replace it the file sizes were different. Actually the old one was 3 mb larger.
Thanks in advance for any ones help.

Gaveup the game after I couldn't get past the 2nd level. -_-
The door just doesn't remain open. It closes as soon as I move away. How the hell am I suppose to cross the road!

Comment 7 didn't help. Looks like there's a glitch in the version I got of the game. :(

Level 2 is actulally pretty easy. On the right there is this box. Move that ball to the top right button and while the gate is open, push the box inside to the bottom left button. then make the ball go through the left gate. :)

NORTON doesn't let installation run (security issue). Too bad.
Please note that I've installed a lot of giveaway games without this issue.

.....................Moderator comment................

Get rid of Norton; since Symantec took it over its become the joke amongst serious security software vendors. What you are getting is a false positive (Norton is well known for giving false positives; more than any other commercial security software).

The game giveaway has been operating since 2006 and has given away well over a thousand games' none of which have ever had a security issue. Some users may have reported problems ith some giveaways, but they have always been proven to be false positives.

p.s. Symantec are relying on users memory of how good Norton 'was' back in the day when it ruled amongst other security software packages; but sadly no longer.

I downloaded this on the previous giveaway.

It is a bit short, but I liked it very much! I like the physics/logic behind most wheemplay games and hope them much continued/increasing good fortune.

BTW my son (16) and I (just shy of 60 both race to complete before the other. Funny how we see the other's blind spots in trying to get a particular level done.

Sometimes, however in some of the games, the accuracy/our ability to get the almost exact action complete seems to be a bit off. Seem to remember no such issue with this one.

I downloaded some really good games from Giveaway. Sadly this isn't one of them.

Sorry Stephen, but I actually agree with Initra (comment #2). I've learnt to avoid Wheemplay for the same reason, but downloaded this one before I noticed it was Wheemplay. I've played a few levels as I already downloaded it and it is very typical of their offerings and (as expected) does very quickly get thoroughly boring. The only positive comment I can make is that Wheemplay themselves recognise that their games aren't up to much by only asking 99 cents for it, although even 10 cents is a little much in my opinion.

Sorry to be so down on it, maybe a 5 year old would enjoy it more than me, but this is not a good or in any way 'addictive' game.

.....................Moderator comment...................

No need to apologise Andy, we all have different opinions of what's good and bad. I wouldn't put this in the good category for several reasons, but then it's not bad either. Its not something I would purchase, even for a dollar, but 'IMO', for free, its a nice little time waster. (Especially compared to some of the other Wheemplay games)

When I go to a museum I and see a lot of paintings some appeal to me and some don't. My wife tends to have a quite different taste then I have in paintings and likes the ones I wouldn't care about a bit and doesn't like the ones I would choose to put in our livingroom. Lack of money settles the peace, we return without any paintings. ;) (even the museum likes it that way).

Taste is very personal, some like Wheemplay games and others don't. I do like Wheemplay games a lot. Some are better and others are not that good, but overall they have a nice collection af plays you can do to fill a dull moment between things.

And there are definitly some good things about wheemplay games:
1. they open alway in windowed mode (oh happy me)
2. they are always portable and small.
3. because of .2) you can conserve (not only today) them on a USB-stick (I have the entire collection, I think).

Todays game is a nice puzzle game. Thanks Wheemplay, good job and thanks GGaotD.

Thank you for your feedback Alf. Agree on all counts. These are great time fillers, or for me just to take a break from the big boys.

Stephen, level 2:
1.move the ball to the upper switch in a way the right doors stay open
2.move the block keeping the right doors from closing again.
3.move the ball to the lower switch in a way the lefts doors stay open
4.move the block keeping the leftdoors from closoing again.
5. move the ball to collect the key
6,7,8... etc. etc.

Here is a spoiler picture a made for you.

Thanks Alf, much appreciated; however that problem was based on my original review when I was first playing the game. I always rush through to get as much info as i can for the review as usually I don't get to see what's being posted till either very late the previous day, or the early hours of the morning of the review. Not ideal when trying to write a review odf a game. I'd much prefer to have been able to play the whole game first. sometimes I get earlier notification, but then I have to work off a 30 minute to 1 hour demo, which again is just not enough time to write up a full review adequately.

I should amend the post as I sorted the problem after I'd posted the review last time it was given away. Thanks for the effort you've put into trying to help and the thought. :)

regards

W.R.

I've played this game previously and I remember being frustrated at not being able to control the ball both fast and accurate at the same time. That might be something to do with my age and speed of my own reactions rather than a reflection on the game. I want to like the game, but just like the first time I played it, I can't get through level 5.

WR, level 2 is just a matter of making the switches stay in.

Have a nice day.

..........................Moderator comment.......................

Granted, the last several Wheemplay games given away have been a little boring, (apart from the last one). This was is a repeat being one of the first to be given away back in 2010 and was one of the better ones in my opinion. Did you even try the game; if not how can you post that its boring?

Developers rely on good feedback to improve their games. If you download this game please take some time once you’ve played it a while to leave some constructive feedback either positive or negative. The more constructive feedback we get, the more likely developers are going to give more games away. The giveaway site already has a very good standing with the search engines. Developers want their products out there on the WWW, this site has the potential to do that. The game giveaway project gives away on average between 9 to 17 thousand downloads for each game depending upon what genre and how obscure the game is. That’s a lot of homes these games are being downloaded into and a lot of 'potential' cash that’s being lost by the developers. If we get better games because of better feedback, the community are likely to continue to benefit from the generosity of the developers. Satisfied community members are then more likely to visit the home sites of those developers and purchase games that they may not have bothered with before they discovered the developer via the game giveaway site, thus giving the developers more incentives to give away even more decent games.

Please leave some feedback once you’ve checked the game out. It can be positive or negative, but please explain what your reasons were for the feedback you post. You could also leave suggestions for improving the game, for example, this game could do with more block types for the levels editor, add more power-ups, describing the ones you think would be suitable, add some mini games (which seem all the rage in some arcade games now) or enable the user to be able to change the in game music easily.

Thank you in advance to all those who take the time to post a constructive comment.

Regards

Whiterabbit aka Stephen

Box and Ball QuestL>:

PicDepict.com
InstallationL>:

Today’s game downloads to a 6.36Mb zip file and unpacks to a read me doc with the terms and conditions and instructions

The game installs to C:\Games by default and is 5.95Mb in size once unpacked. There is no shortcut installed nor any uninstaller. As with other Wheemplay games the game installs directly into the games folder with no folder of its own, but you can create one by adding Box and Ball Quest to the end of the installation path.

i.e.

C:\Games\Box and Ball Quest\

There is no uninstaller included; to uninstall the game just delete the executable.

I’ve tested the game on Win XP Pro 32 bit, Vista Home Premium 64 bit and Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit with no problems.

PicDepict.com
IntroductionL>:

Click and run, hide and have a few second brake! Not so simple, but very addictive!

Reference http://app.wheemplay.com/boxandballquest/ accessed 26th Feb 2011

The GameL>:

Box ‘n’ Ball Quest looks like straightforward and relatively easy puzzle game where you have to get your green ball to the escape hatch in as few clicks as possible, picking up stars and a key to unlock the hatch door on your way. However the puzzles are not as easy as they first appear. The simple layouts give a false impression of difficulty. The developer has created some devious puzzles using lasers, movable and unmovable objects, doors that are activated by buttons and holes for the ball to fall down ; of course some of the objects such as boxes can be moved to lock lasers or block doors open etc, so don’t despair when you get stuck because there should be a solution; that said, I’m already stuck on level 2, lol. Check out the screenshots via the link below (in the images section).

PicDepict.com
PicDepict.com

The game opens up in windowed mode as default. You can change it to full screen by clicking on the appropriate button to the top right of the window. You can also close the game down via one of those buttons as well. You can toggle the in game music off by clicking on the speaker icon to the top right of the playing arena. Initially you get prompts and hints such as ‘use the boxes’ and ‘click near the ball’ ;-)

PicDepict.com
FeaturesL>:

• Cute green ballie

• 20 incredibly addictive levels

• 3 secret levels

• Achievements and highscores

ImagesL>:

You can see several screen captures as a slide show via the following link:

http://s571.photobucket.com/albums/ss160/Whiterabbit04/Box%20n%20Ball/?albumview=slideshow

PicDepict.com
ConclusionL>:

Apart from being stuck on level 2 this game looks like a keeper for me (hopefully someone will post a solution, Level design is relatively plain and simple, which is ideal for a coffee break time killer. Unfortunately there is no levels editor, which previous games from this developer have had, which is a pity because there is only 20 levels plus a few secret levels included. Due to the sparsity of levels I reckon this game is only worth around 5 out of 10; still, don’t let that put you off downloading this game.

PicDepict.com
SuggestionsL>:

I’d add a levels editor to the game or at least double up the number of levels as 20 levels plus three secret levels is just not enough for any game IMO. Add the ability to change the color of the ball and improve the look of the levels. This game looks like a hundred other free games that you can get from places like Caiman Island Games

More Gamesl>

Up until a few weeks ago I'd stopped posting links to MyPlayCity games because you were required to install toolbars and have your home page hijacked before you could play any of their games. It seems that they have changed their policy yet again and removed that requirement. You will still get the check-boxes so you need to make sure the boxes have been unchecked before installing the game. also they have a very large collection approaching 600 premium quality arcade games ranging from Match 3, Time Management and Hidden Object games, Action and Adventure games to Shooters, Flying, Car, Brain Teasers, Board games, Mahjong, Games for Girls, Card games, Sport, Arcade and several more categories (most can be found in more than one category.), so make sure you do check because they may not have removed all of the negative stuff yet.

Some more good news, if you remember I used to post links to another free site called FreeGamePick, but stopped for the same reason I stopped posting links to MyPlayCity. They have also stopped the practice of forcing you to install toolbars etc. You can get the previous weeks games such as Helic and two of its sister games from FreeGamePick, though it's called Helicopter Wars and the other two are called Sky Battle and Sky Battle: WWII. Helicopter Wars and other previous game giveaways are also available from MyPlayCity.

You can find more games over on FreeGamePick HERE

Apparently Gametop has gone the other way and now forces you to install toolbars etc.I can't confirm this as I haven't checked in a few weeks. they certainly didn't a few weeks ago, but I read in the forums that they had last week.

With respect to all of these free game sites including Jenkat Games always make sure you uncheck the toolbars and home page changers. If they wont let you, it means you'll have to mess around recovering your home page. when this happened to me several months ago via MyPlayCity it took me ages to get rid of the extra browser that went straight to Ask.com.

If today's game doesn't take your fancy then check out the game discussion forums and the free games synopsis. We’ve posted a couple of thousand free games over the last three years, many of which are excellent alternatives to their commercial cousins.

Recent additions include a shmup called Grid Wars 2 (similar to Geometry Wars), Passagebalt (a Cannabalt/ Parkour type game), Yeti Hunter a horror suspense game, a platformer called Bit of war a first person spooky walk-through called The Stairwell, Retroblazer an FPS, another FPS called Open Arena, an update to the flight simulator Flight Gear, a free FPS game called Red Eclipse, an Experimental Puzzle called Cut & Paste (from the Indievania site I've mentioned further down this section). An update to a game posted over 2 years ago called open Transport Tycoon, Mari0 (a portal like version of Mario); there's also another Doom port called DoomRL (roguelike FPS) and finally from week 177 an adventure game called The Journey Down. I was going to post Space Quest II: Vohaul's Revenge, which was freely available until GOG hoovered it up (like they have with many older games over the last few years for example Darklands, Decent and many more decent oldies). Actually I've just found a legal fan remake of Space Quest II: Vohaul's Revenge that is free which I will be posting details of soon. :) You can get the most recent version of Command & Conquer Tiberium sun for free via Fileplanet, but this is only a temporary offer, check

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/11550 for details

All of the major game distributors such as Steam, Impulse and GOG all have some sales with savings as good as 75% in some cases.

For example GOG (Good Old Games) has several Activision games with 50% off for example Arcanum, Caesar III, Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption and the Zork Anthology.

Steam has some excellent games on sale at the moment including Trine 2, the superbly redered platformer with the ability to swap between three different characters each with their own skill sets, you get the original Trine for free as well. If you already have it, you can gift it to a friend. :) Also available for 50% off is Gotham City Imposters a multiplayer game with some whacky dlc included in the sale DCS Warthog a superb flight simulator has 33% off. If you like flying games this will give you one of the most realistic flight sim games available bar Microsoft's Fligh sim.

Today's 24 hr deal is Bulletstorm a futuristic FPS with excellent graphics for only $5/£3.75 (for a triple A game that was only released last year that's amazing), here's a short review:

As Grayson Hunt, players wield an arsenal of over-the-top combat moves and outrageously large guns that feed into distinct ‘skillshot’ system producing unprecedented levels of frantic gameplay and yell-inducing satisfaction

.

Gamestop also has some excellent deals with anything from 33% to 75% off. And includes Assassins creed 2, Assassins Creed: Brotherhood and the latest assassins Creed: Revelations (the second, third and latest releases of the franchise) also available are Chicago 1930 a top down Mafia like game, Metro 203, one of my favorite post apocalyptic games of last year and a beta game called A Valley Without wind (I posted a review of this game in the forums).

Gamersgate as usual has even more sales too numerous to mention here, though if you like city building Strategy games the whole Tropico Franchise including the latest version are available with from 60% to 75% off . There are also lots of arcade games such as Treasures of montezuma with 70% off.

Greenman Gaming (GMG) has some deals to offer as well, though not many at the moment; you will have to Google GMG as they aren't included on Didimatic

You can check out all of the main distributors deals via the Didematic Site

There are some 'no strings attached' freebies from Alawar and Realore (well you do have to install Alawar's gamebox and register a free account over at Realore, but there's nothing in game to disturb your gameplay). You can get 'Magus: In Search of Adventure' from Alawar and a previous gamegiveaway called 'Pirate Stories: Kit and Ellis' (last week it was Jane's Reality 2) from Realore. The Alawar freebie is usually available for around a month (it changed two weeks ago) and the Realore game changes every Friday. At the moment I think you can get still get 'Awakening: The Dreamless Castle' game for free from Big Fish Games though you will need to visit Freestufftimes to find the coupon code to get it free. It's a puzzle HOG. (You'll need to look back at least 3 weeks plus a few days to find the coupon).

If you are interested in Indie Games check out the Indievania site for great deals (and some freebies to) on obscure and new indie developers who've put there games up for sale. All money goes to the developers. Included on the Indievania site are alpha stage games like Kenshi which are well worth buying at a lower price than the eventual release price. (There's nearly 240 obscure and little known indie games, though some may be familiar like 'Xotic' and 'Inside a Star Filled Sky', both of which are now available on Steam. You could also visit Kickstarter that highlights new projects. At the moment there are a couple of up and coming games that still require funding such as 'Wastelands 2', 'Bacillus' and 'Kenshi', plus there are several other projects hanging around that are still in alpha such as 'Driftmoon', 'Tomes of Mephistopheles', 'Double Fine Adventure' and 'Code Hero' to name just a few.

There's more games fromKikstarter that include a space strategy game called FST: Faster than Light, a second version of auditorium called Auditorium 2: Duet and a Squad based strategic shooter called takedown. Just check the front page of the game discussion forums for details.

Oh yeah, nearly forgot, the next Indie Royale bundle is still available as is the Indie Royale Ninja Pack which you can find via the following link:

http://www.indieroyale.com/

For those who are not familiar with the concept, its a pay what you want (almost) deal. The bundle is the St Patricks bundle and includes five games, three of which include Steam keys, all are downloadable for a DRM free version and four have Desura keys included. The gaes you get with the bundle are Hard Reset, Lair of the Evildoer, DLC Quest, Jolly Roger and Vertex Dispenser, plus if you donate above the average donation which is around $3 or $4 you get a sound track as well (can't remember what it is as i've not downloaded it yet). Just the three steam games would cost you 3p short of £24 thats approx $36 on top of that you get two non Steam games. As I said above you also get DRM free downloads of the game as well. You can check the Indie Royale site out via the following link:

http://www.indievania.com/games

Theres a couple more bundle offers still valid amd a new one has just been posted that includes four zombie oriented games which you can check out via this link:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/10915

(for example theres one from Milkstone studios that has three games called Zombie Football Carnage, Infinity Danger and Motor Heat. I think you'll find those via the indievania site {see second link above}); and the zombie bundle i mention above also from Indievania called Bundle4Deal which includes Zombie Football Carnage (repeated from the last deal), Metal Dead, Three Dead Zed and Corril Slayer).

There's also a new one from the Indiegala bundle (Indiegala III) which has five excellent games with a bonus game and one more to add next week whichall those who pay aboe the average prce will get:

Flatout (bonus)
Greed: Black Border
Futur Wars
Grotesque Tactics
Twin Sector
Trapped Dead

all for less than $5

Problems installing, activating and running today’s game:

If you have difficulty downloading or activating the game you can try again later or do one of the following - for example once downloaded when you click on the dual activation and set up file you may get the message “Failed to connect. Please try again later” Check to see if your internet explorer isn't offline (thanks to MrSnoozles/Mike and GMMan for that fix). If the previous suggestion doesn't work go check out previous comments from the last several weeks and look for comments from GMMan and Mike. They have also posted their possible fixes for this problem.

Mike suggests that you check to see if Internet Explorer is offline (even if you use firefox). If it is make sure that it's online thn try again. I’ve always tried re-booting my modem and/or router with some success, though Mike has said that doing that does nothing. Still, it’s worth a try if all else fails.

If you are getting the black screen problem right click on the games executable and select properties then click on the compatibility mode and select the disable visual themes. This should fix the problem, if not try disabling the display scaling on higher dpi settings and disabling the desktop composition. You can also try compatibility modes for XP, epecially if the game is quite old.

Other fixes include changing your screen resolution, installing the latest direct X (remember that XP uses DX 9 or earlier only, Vista uses DX 10 or before and Win 7 DX11 or before). Also try updating your graphics drivers. The main two chip manufacturers are NVIDIA and ATI (now AMD) both of which offer driver downloads for free. Just go to the respective manufactures home page and you'll find a link to the driver download page. To find out which graphic card or graphics chip your computer uses type in Dxdiag in the search field (Vista or Win 7) or the run command (XP); this opens up the DirectX diagnostics panel. click on the display tab and look to the left panel. You should easily see what graphics card or chip you are using. (This is required information when selecting the correct download from the developers site).

If you are asked to turn off your Data Execution Prevention for this game to run. You can create an exception so that the game will run without having to turn DEP off. Please bear in mind it's rare that anyone even mentioned getting a DEP warning. If you are not sure how to create an exception read THIS article, which tells you how to do it.

If you are having problems unzipping the game giveaways zip file, for example getting a message saying the file is invalid try using a different file archiver such as 7-Zip, J-Zip, CAM UnZip, Hamster Free Zip Archiver, GZip, B Zip2, peazip, ZipUnzip, FreeRAR Extract Frog, RAR File Open Knife, ALZip, The Extractor, RarZilla Free Unrar

Okay, that should be enough. There are actually many more free versions available. also there are other commercial titles such as the well-known WinRAR, Stuffit, WinAce, NXPowerlite and Corel Winzip Pro, but IMO 7-Zip is probably one of the better freebies. I did purchase a copy of Stuffit when it was on sale a few years ago and recently repurchased a more up to date version when it was o offer via BitsDuJour, but didn't like the interface for some reason, so hardly ever use it.

In response to the following problem“the file is in use of another process” –
I suggested that you try rebooting your computer. If that doesn't work, check what programs are running in the background and turn off those that you know are not needed as there may be a conflict with something (Game Booster is a useful free program that will automatically turn off all unnecessary windows programs and you can add others to the mix via a configuration screen. Once done you can then switch everything back on via a single button.

you can download Game Booster from IOBit:

http://www.iobit.com/gamebooster.html

Also try clearing out your internet cache and refresh the page (F5).

W.r.t. Netbooks and problems with resolution, Markus posted a possible fix via registry editing. He said the following:

"If you install the latest Intel GFX driver and
1) Run regedit2) Search and modify all values “Display1_DownScalingSupported” from “0″ to “1″3) Restart the system
New resolution 1024×768 will be available then.#"

If you are posting requests for help late in the day I would suggest posting in the main giveaway forums in the game Game Discussion . If you’ve installed the game but it won’t work for some reason, it should still be registered, so someone may be able to help at another time. Unfortunately if your problem is actually installing it then once the giveaway period is over there’s nothing that can be done until the game is given away again (though that isn’t guaranteed). It’s always worth checking out the free games sites as sometimes the games we get here are also available for free from them as well.
