    The Game:

There are over 175 unique layouts to play through. Although not true mahjong IMO (I play the four player variety) I’m sure most community members know how to play mahjong solitaire games. Basically you have to remove all the tiles from the level by matching pairs together. That said, its not as simple as that. You can only match ‘Free’ tiles. These are tiles that have no tiles on top or directly on either side of the tile. Its always advisable to remove pairs that have tiles on the tallest stacks or long rows first; also try to remove tile matches that free up the greatest number of locked tiles first. Always be aware of 3 matching free tiles. Choose the pair that will free up the greatest number of locked tiles first and leave the tile that is blocking fewer important tiles.
Suit tiles (red and blue) are unique in the game of mahjong solitaire, they are the only tiles in the game that can create matching pairs with tiles that differ. The four blue suits can be matched with any combination of blue tiles and the same goes for the red suits.
To help complete a level try to plan as many moves ahead as you can. To complete a level you don’t have to completely clear a level, just clear the gold tiles.

From the main menu you can select options to change the volume of music and sound effects, toggle off voices, change from full screen (default) to widowed and vice verca as well as check out the credits. Also from the main menu you can check out game play by clicking on the ‘how to play ‘ button, which basically says the same as what I’ve written above. The extras button allows you to play the game in classic mode (with no HOG elements) and also create your own levels via the editor. If you want to play the game with HOG elements just click on play from the main menu. The game is introduced by a short storyboard, which pops up throughout the game that follows the story of Alice in Wonderland. You can skip these boards by clicking on the continue button to the bottom right of the screen, but there’s no way of completely avoiding them. Once you’ve left the initial introductory storyboard you are introduced to the level map that takes you through the adventures of Alice as told by Lewis Carroll. You can continue on playing the game, or return to the menu to select the traditional game if you wish.

Before you start in the main mahjong mode you will get your first HOG, which is a find the White Rabbits. 😉 If you get stuck, there is a hint button. Thankfully there’s no clouds of glitter to indicate where you can find any objects unless you use the hints. Sometimes you’ll get to a point where there is no moves. A small window will pop up that allows you to either start the level again, shuffle the tiles or exit the game. If you exit part way through at this stage you will lose progress on the level, but when you return will start from the beginning of the level. levels do have a timer, but this isn’t for stopping the level after a specific time, its just for recod purposes. At the end of a level it will tel you your best time.

You can create multiple profiles, so the game is ideal for a family.

The background music is entirely appropriate to the story and game IMO, but can be turned off as already mentioned elsewhere via the options menu. The narration is by a female. Each level has a hint button that will highlight a single matching pair. Each time you click the hint button it will highlight a different pair (if there is any) and will cycle through the pairs if you continue to use the hint button. There doesn’t appear to be any penalty using the hint button. You can also highlight all free tiles via the ‘show free tiles’, button. Along the top of the playing arena from the left you can see how long you’ve taken on the level, with the best time below. If you pause the game (by clicking on the pause button, or if in windowed mode clicking outside the window) the timer also pauses. In the middle is the level number and to the top right the number of matching pairs available and the number of tiles remaining. Along the bottom from left to right are the menu ,hint, show free tiles and pause buttons.

To exit the game either click on the menu button, which opens a small window with several options (main menu, options, new layout, how to play and resume), then click on the main menu button, this brings up another small window that tells you that exiting to the main menu will save your current game with a small button that says don’t display in the future. Click on the Okay button to proceed to the main menu where you can exit the game properly; or, alternatively click on escape key which brings up a window that enables you to leave the game immediately. Your game will be saved at the beginning of the level or HOG you left it.

The only negative I have with this game is its boot up time. It takes over 40 seconds for the game to open up to the main menu.

You can change the music by swapping the music files via the following path. You will need to rename each file and convert them to the .ogg format:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Playrix Entertainment\Alice’s Magical Mahjong\resources\x.ogg

where x.ogg represents the music files. Most of the files are sound bites for the various sound effects and these shouldn’t be changed unless you want the game to sound crazy. The music files are not that obvious as they are mixed up with a few hundred other files. Look for files such as snd_intro1.ogg oand snd_game_background_1.ogg

Overall I’ve really enjoyed playing this game. Mahjiong solitaire is an excellent game and you’ll find loads of levels to work through as well as create your own via the level editor (which I’ve not had time to check out yet) . The addition of a level editor is always a bonus.

I’m not really into Hidden Object games any more, but the ones provided with this game are very easy. This is a great game for all the family from the kids through to great grand parents; (though the older members may need a magnifying glass to find some of the hidden objects unless they don’t mind using the hints, The game is styled in the fashion of a well made cartoon, that shouldn’t put off the adult in anyone. Alice in Wonderland is one of those stories I’m sure we all had read to us as children and it brings up fond memories of my mother (whose no longer with us) reading to me as a child. :)

If you are posting late in the day I would also suggest posting in the main giveaway forums in the game discussion section. If you’ve installed the game but it won’t work for some reason, it should still be registered, so someone may be able to help at another time. Unfortunately if your problem is actually installing it then once the giveaway period is over there’s nothing that can be done until the game is given away again (though that isn’t guaranteed). It’s always worth checking out the free games sites as sometimes the games we get here are also available for free from them. MyPlayCity has the most with oover 600 games to choose from.

Today’s game is available from MyPlayCity HERE

Games, Games, and yet more Games plus Download, Installation & Game play Problems:

If you have any problems installing or getting to work today’s game please go HERE for help.

If you’re looking for something other than today’s game check the didimatic site via THIS link for some brilliant deals.

There’s almost 70 games and/or dlc’s on sale over on Steam at the moment, for example 75% off Tropico 4 collectors bundle, 66% off Max Payne 3, the complete armA II set with 50% off, 50% off age of Empires III Complete collection, 66% off Miasmata (24hr deal), 67% off Primal Carnage, 75% off Velvet Assassin plus loads more great deals which you’ll find via the Specials tab on Steams front page HERE

You’ll find many more game deals from Gamersgate, Gamestop, Greenman Gaming and GOG; all of which you can find via the Didimatic site, which I’ve linked to above (apart from Greenman gaming). There’s a brilliant offer with Bioshock Infinite. If you prepurchase it you get two other games for free. the first Bioshock, plus a choice from several other games including Bioshock 2, Spec Op’s: The Line, Civilization V, Darkness II or Mafia II, All these games are excellent. I’d recommend Spec Ops: the Line or Mafia II. If you like driving games then go for Mafia, if you like horror go for Darkness II. That said, Steam also have a brilliant deal on this game, with a free giftable copy of Bioshock, a free dlc, loads of TF2 items and if they reach the final target the latest game in the X-Com series totally free as well. To be honest there are too many game deals around too list them all. Just visit the sites I recommend above and I’m sure you’ll find something that suits you for a decent price.

The usual monthly free game from Alawars game box is now Sheep’s Quest! (though I’m still getting Sprill despite having deleted and reinstalled Game box) You may need to reinstall gamebox if its still showing the previous game. It’s supposed to change every month, but some community members are seeing the same game for months on end. Dido suggested that you reinstall gamebox to fix the problem. Reinstalling gamebox shouldn’t affect any previous freebies. :). (You need to install the free Gamebox from Alawar to access the free games, which for newcomers change approximately every month). If that’s not enough, check out the Game Discussion forums HERE for details of other games either free or on deals such as the Indie Game bundles (of which there are at least four live at the moment, and all of which contain some excellent games – see below for links and details); or check out the four day sales at IndieGameStand.

The latest IndieGameStand game is Doom & Destiny an old school RPG. You can pay less than a dollar for this game, but if you want the extra’s (usually game music, manuals etc) you have to pay the average price which stands at $1.66. Today’s extra’s include two more games called Miner Warfare and Spyleaks. There’s also several indie bundles over at Each bundle has three games and costs $5 each.

    The Bundle Stars: Fire and Ice bundle includes Tiny Troopers, Adams Venbture 1 & 2, plus one more to come later all Steam keys. Airport Control sim, Darkness Within, Darkness Within 2, Firefighter plus another unamed title all Desura keys. Also If you missed previous bundles they are still available at a slightly higher price, but still bargains}

The Humble Bundle with android 5 includes Beat Hazard Ultra, Dungeon Defenders + All DLC, Dynamite Jack, NightSky, Solar 2, Super Hexagon all Steam keys plus drm free copies

The Groupees Digital Game Factory bundle includes Broken Sword 2: The Smoking Mirror, Commandos 2: Men of Courage, Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines, Commandos: Beyond the Call of Duty, Broken Sword – Director’s Cut, Commandos 3: Destination Berlin all Steam keys plus Praetorians and Imperial Glory DRM free (I must have about 5 copies of the Commandos series as they seem to have figured in quite a few bundles plus i still have the original discs)

The The Indie Gala Flash bundle includes Miner Wars Arena, Miner Wars 2081, Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon, Paranormal, All with Steam keys and apart from Miners Wars 2081 a DRM free copy ass well. also drm free are Pathologic and The Abbey with music from the game Paranormal

    A Request for help:

Developers rely on good feedback to improve their games. If you download this game please take some time once you’ve played it a while to leave some constructive feedback either positive or negative. The more constructive feedback we get, the more likely developers are going to give more games away. The giveaway site already has a very good standing with the search engines. Developers want their products out there on the WWW, this site has the potential to do that. The game giveaway project gives away on average between 9 to 17 thousand downloads for each game depending upon what genre and how obscure the game is. That’s a lot of homes these games are being downloaded into and a lot of ‘potential’ cash that’s being lost by the developers. If we get better games because of better feedback, the community are likely to continue to benefit from the generosity of the developers. Satisfied community members are then more likely to visit the home sites of those developers and purchase games that they may not have bothered with before they discovered the developer via the game giveaway site, thus giving the developers more incentives to give away even more decent games.

Please leave some feedback once you’ve checked the game out. It can be positive or negative, but please explain what your reasons were for the feedback you post. You could also leave suggestions for improving the game, for example, this game could do with more block types for the levels editor, add more power-ups, describing the ones you think would be suitable, add some mini games (which seem all the rage in some arcade games now) or enable the user to be able to change the in game music easily.

Thank you in advance to all those who take the time to post a constructive comment.

  2. The game is a bit a disappointment.

The Mah-jong part is quite OK, but as well the hidden object mini game as the story line are very childish. I felt a bit embarressed while playing it.
The aquarel-type drawings are nice to look at, but makes the hog-games difficult and in windowed mode impossible as the objects are often very small.

Must be a nice game for families with kids though.

    ……………………Moderator comment……………………..

Thank you for your feedback Irene. You can skip all of the HOG’s by playing the traditional game. Just select extras then click on the Classic game. What makes this a gem of a game in my opinion is the addition of a level editor. Why did you feel embarrassed?

  3. Hi Stephen,

i´m unable to install. Setup starts with the little Activating-window with text checking giveaway-availability for about 30 seconds and then follows an error-window with “failed to launch the program”.

    What´s wrong?

    Greetz Nicky

    ……………………..Moderator comment……………………

Hi Nicky, I’m presuming you managed to download the game from the giveaway site? Try redownloading it, If you still get the same problem, it could be the security software that’s now included with the package. This may conflict with your own security, which blocks the process. You could try making an exception via your secirity or just turn it off temporarily. There has never been a giveaway infected with malware, so I would say its pretty safe to do so. Once you’ve installed the game turn your security back on.

Also check out the FAQ’s that I’ve posted over in the Game discussion forums. you’ll find the thread in the sticky section. I’ve also linked to it in my review above.

If you continue to have problems please do say. :) I hope the above is helpful.
