If you are having problems downloading today's game as I did last week (couldn't get the download button to turn Green after clicking on the Facebook button, but did manage to get an email. The giveaway team did post an explanation in last weekdays game (which is still running for the Steam game Beholder) that explained why some community members were having problems with emails etc. you can see the post HERE.

If you continue to experience problems the game over on MyPlayCity is exactly the same game apart from the check boxes you get during installation. Once installed the games are exactly the same. I installed the MPC version early this morning before the game went live so that i could start the review process. You can get the MPC version HERE

The Game:

The game was released earlier this year and is a hidden object game interdispersed with some original mini games, which you can access via the extra's menu. At the start of the game all the mini games are locked, but you can see what's on offer by clicking the extra's button. A rock appears with four buttons labelled Top Secret, Mini Games, WebCam and Movies. Even with a WebCan installed the WebCam button appears to be inactive, but you can access the other three buttons. The Top Secret button gives you access to concept art and top secret images and information, all of which are locked at the start of the game. There are nine mini games available, as well as access to several video's related to the game. Everything is locked at the start of the game, but as you progress, items from each section are unlocked and can be accessed via the extra's menu. I've posted a link to a you tube video of one of the videos below. Options include the usual sound and music sliders for volume as well as button toggles for 'full screen/windowed', 'wide screen support', 'custom cursors' and 'show tips'. The inventory tab lists all objects you can utilize in the current scene, it may be a single object or a collection of related objects.

09 - first scene
10 - peep hole
The game isn't a typical hidden object game, though it retains much of what you'd expect from such games, for example, some of the items you find are stored in the inventory until required to progress further. Some levels include of more than one area to explore, for example the first level involves looking around a garden shed, it's exterior and the garden. After each level you get a mini game which can be skipped if you wish, though the first mini game seems to be one that you return to frequently to rescue the various animals locked in cages. New things to do are usually introduced by an in game video call from someone. You'll also get the occasional brief appearance of the Yeti. You'll find yourself swapping between the inventory, items list and objectives frequently in this game. As you free animals from their cages via the first mini game, which you return to frequently, at least in the early stages of the game you earn extra hints. There's quite a lot of interaction between the animals starting with the guinea pig, which is the first animal you free from their cage. Once freed you will be asked to feed it, then play with it etc. Every so often a prompt will appear via the phone telling you to return to the animals you have rescued to either feed, play or care for their health. Unfortunately I don't have time to work through the whole game, but I'm presuming you will do this with each animal as you progress through the game. Unlocking various items from the extra's menu such as artwork, videos and secrets. Once unlocked you can check these whenever you wish by returning to the main menu.

11 - peep hole 2
16 - video call 1
If you prefer hidden object games with just the HO aspect, you'll probably be disappointed with this game. The first reall HOG scene doesn't appear until you've searched through the garden shed, the patio and garden as well as freed, fed and played with the guinea pig and found all of the pieces of and assembled the treasure map. Only then will you be presented with a fully fledged HOG scene, which i've added a screen capture of below (36 screen captures preceedde it). You cannot select items that will be in the list but haven't appeared until you've removed some of the earlier items. Most items show up as the word for the item, but some show a silohette, for example the binoculars and hammer. There are also instances, for example in the treasure hunt level where instead of clicking on items you have to pick rubbish up to clear an area and place it in a trash can (around 19 items). As you clear away the trash, wild animals such as a rabbit, a duck and other species of birds, a deer, a lynx and a reptile (lizard) and amphibian (frog) appear. If you end a game before certain save points the progress from the previous save point isn't saved, for example after completing the garbage clean up you are taken back to the first mini game where you are freeing animals from cages. The second animal to be freed is the turtle, once the tasks to free the turtle have been completed I.e. detroy the acid pipe, unlock the cage and clear up the metal tacks (using the items found in the inventory) you get a message saying you've unlocked a secret. If you want to check this out immediately you have to return to the main menu, which closes the game. On returning, you'll find you have to repeat all of the tasks again. When I did this, the only secret that was unlocked had already been unlocked previously. Some area's are returned to more than once. One of the things I really like about this game is the mini games. I've never seen some of them, such as the animals being freed. The match three mini game is also quite decent in it's own right. You have to match fruits and collect their juices. Each filled cup will cause the board to shuffle, the board will also shuffle if there are no moves available. . Once all the cups are filled the mini game is completed ( the third min game to be unlocked. From the mini game menu), it looks like we also have a word search puzzle and a few others that i'll let you discover for yourselves. The hints button also works with the mini games.

I do apologise for not completing this review. I was too distracted to complete the game before this game went live and with other responsibilites (we went to the rememberance parade this morning) It would take most of today to finish the game. by the time i'd completed the review it would be pointless posting it. Hopefully what has been written will help you decide whether to download the game.

Conclusion:
This is an excellent hidden Object game with some original mini games that will apeal to most community members who like arcade games. It's also a good family game, tohugh some images such as the eye through the spy hole may be a little frightning to a small child. Personally i got so involved in playing this game today, i've ended up posting my review vewry late in the day (seven hours after the game went live). I highly recommend this game. I've not enjoyed playing a HOG so much for several months.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank MyPlayCity for giving away Yeti Legend: Mystery of the Forest minus the usual MPC checkboxes and also to the game giveaway team, as always, for securing free games in a safe environment.

It downloaded and installed with no issues (Win10 Homne). It runs rather slow and jerky but I'm guessing that's just an issue with its age and my computer. Fun so far! Thanks for the game!!

Downloaded & installed OK - after disabling AVG, which I almost always have to do on this site. Will not open in full- or wide-screen, so it's just a tiny box on my monitor. Can't read the printing. Also, none of the items have any type of highlighting or any indication that's what you need to click on, so you just click on everything on the page until you find something. Not like other HOGs I've played. Uninstalled.

I'm finding that quite a few of these games won't open full-screen any longer. I can't stand to play a game on a tiny little portion of the screen, so I don't keep those. Wonder why they won't show correctly?

Hi,

The game downloaded quickly and opened same. The graphics are good and game play is easy.
It is typical following one thing after another. A little different in that all are not in the same scene/room
as you look for items. The story moves along quickly as does game play. I did have trouble getting the toxic waste, but perhaps game works that way, not sure! At first wasn't crazy about it, then as I played on I liked it more and will play on soon!
Thanks for another good game!
and have a good week,
Lee

What I've been doing for the past year, or however long this new Themida thing has been involved....is that I download it while my computer is fully loaded and I just let it download in the background while I do stuff in another tab. And then once it's downloaded, I reboot in Safemode with Network enabled and it installs fine. Both yesterday & today, that hasn't worked. I finally got yesterday's game to download while in Safemode. I've tried downloading 3 times when regular mode and I even tried to close all other tabs and let it do its thing....if failed each time. So, now I am in Safemode and am downloading a 4th time.

If this doesn't work, I won't try again. I must say, if this is a new permanent situation, I won't be visiting anymore-not if it's a large game like today. I don't like just sitting here doing nothing while it downloads. I got used to having to do the install in Safemode and that's fine but why this new change?

And I'm also jealous of the ones who didn't seem to get the Facebook share button and were able to download with no problem. I did the FB thing and put my settings at "Only Me"....no I had already done that before a person here recommended it. I know you all want to spread the word and I don't mind helping a bit but...for instance, I'm downloading when there are only a few hours left and the link says it's available for 24 hours....I don't want my friends to think they have 24 hours to get this game and then try the link after the time has expired.

I don't know what the answer is...I don't know if you all are an official business and you need some sort of Revenue or whatever....but the more awkwardness & loops one has to go through to get these game, the more people will just go elsewhere for games.

Oh and also, I've stated before that I can no longer download & install from MyPlayCity, even in Safe Mode, so that recommendation won't work for me. Just FYI. --Dax

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi Dax, sorry to hear of the problems. Hope they are or get solved soon. As yet I've rarely had a problem with game giveaways nor the giveaways from the other side of the project. Recently I have had some giveaways blocked and even one executable from the other side deleted by my security, but those problems are easily solved at my end. Do you have any security installed for example a freebie from the giveaway project or one of the other free sites such as bitDuJour or Failmid's site? Prior to going on vacation earlier this year my daughter fried my motherboard so I had to replace it. This was done once I returned from our vacation at which point I could no longer install any giveaways on this computer (at least until the problem was solved by a Microsoft technician. I tohught that when you replace certain hardware on a computer you also had to reinstall your operating system. That is the case if your HDD is fried or you have to replace your cpu. I tohught the same for motherboards, but it seems I was wrong becasue all of the giveaways and my free copy od win 10 were still registered once I'd replaced the motherboard. After the motherboard was replaced I started to have provblems downloading from anyhere apart from my Steam games. I'd get amessage saying I didn't have permission to install or some such message. It got very frustrating a sI couldn't figure out what the proboem was. I'd turned off what i tohught was all of my security, had surfed the tech sites for adice, none of which had worked. so as a last resort (as I thought it may be related to my operating system) I phoned Microsoft and got connected to a technician. I allowed him to access my desktop and in less than a minute he'd figured out what the problem was. I'd installed a particular security program given away free for a year (can't remember where I got it from and I'm not sure what it is called - another community member here reported a similar problem and one of the more informed community members suggested something and it turned out to be the exact same problem I/d had. Basically a security program that ran in the background, but didn't show up in the task manager, at least not obviously. If you right click on an executable and check the drop down menu, you can see if that particular program is installed, I think it was something like Secure Plus. Once I deactivated that everything went back to normal.

Seems I have the same issue as others - the closing of the Facebook window didn't make the button green to DL but as I use Facebook, I posted and deleted the post right afterwards. For others it must be somehow inconvinient.

First a question to WhiteRabbit
I read you said you use your SSD drive only for Windows - I put all my games on it cause I thought it would be good to have them on the faster drive, did I do wrong?

Now to the game:

DL and installation went smooth as usual under Win10.

Nice story line, I played through to the lab without a problem and am already curious about the outcome...

Thanks for another nice game.

One of the better older HOGs. I think I beta tested it for Reflexive years ago, not sure. The name of it was different though, they used "Bigfoot" instead of "Yeti" in the title.

I am really happy to get MPC games through GAOTD because MPC downloads seem to only install to drive C which is a no-no on my system, as it is a small SSD drive. (I asked them about it, got no reply from them.) Game GAOTD lets us decide where the games are installed, as does BFG, GameHouse, Pogo and Shockwave. MPC, get with the program!

Thank you MPC and Game GAOTD for releasing it to us.

Same here, all of my games and apps are installed to different non SSD drives. My main SSD drive I only use for Windows, though it does install game saves etc via My Documents and also in the hidden App Data folder.

Tom, I'm on Win10 Home and it runs very well (though slow but it's an older HOG so that's to be expected). Did you get the latest update to Win10? I just got mine a few days ago.

Using firefox, Win 10, I DID get the FB popup, and I DID need to share to be able to d/l. Closing the FB popup did not work for me, but sharing to FB and selecting "only me" did work. I see lots of folks are saying there is no pop-up this week, and others are saying they cannot d/l with Firefox. Again, for me, sharing to "only me" allowed me to d/l the game.

laurelnev, Looks like the 'share and download' link in the popup doesn't work in Chrome browsers, only IE.

Its been a few hours now and I'm still getting "failed to connect". I do hope they extend the giveaway time period.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi Mark, try turning off your anti-malware suite temporarily. As mentioned elsewhere in these comments, the giveaway team have given away games regularly since Dec 2006 and have never given a file infected with malware. The giveaway wrapper contains Themida code, which is often seen as a threat by anti malware suites because Themida code can also (and is) used to hide malware. it's likely your security suite is blocking the program from downloading and/or installing today's game becasue of the Themida code. I can assure you the game is not infected and is safe to install..

Reply   |   Comment by Mark Van  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Mark Van,

You misunderstand. When I double clicked the set up icon (as one normally does), the program's first function (at least with GAOTD programs) is to *phone home* to verify that installation is allowed (ie. Not past the allowable set up date). When these *phone homes* are attempted, they are occasionally unsuccessful due to heavy traffic or some problem with the site. I know it wasn't an internet issue since I was able to post the problem which means my internet was working fine.

This was not a virus complaint or a problem with my anti-virus. This was an inability to connect with the GAOTD site and thus I downloaded it for nothing. Dee-Rats! Just my kind of game to. Oh well....

Very surprised nobody else left the same sort of comment???

Sorry I explained it in a way previously which led to some confusion.

...............................Moderator Comment.............................

Ah okay Mark, thanks for the explanation. Sometimes anti-malware programs block the installation and give the same or similar message, which is why I thought that may have been the problem. glad you got it sorted in the end. :)

So far I've only played for a short while but it looks like a decent game. It's not a traditional HO game but contains enough challenges to keep me interested. I'm not sure how I'll be looking after the guinea pig. At the moment that's a bit distracting but everything else is great. Thanks to GOTD & MPC & Stephen (your comments are always helpful) for this little distractor.

Reply   |   Comment by DJ  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

DJ, Yeah, the only thing I don't like about the game is having to tend to the animals to get hints. It's the same stuff for each animal each time (they have their own items) and you can click on the link in the top, right even before it turns on but I find it distracting.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Yeah, that particular aspect, although initially I thought was a nice touch and original, soon gets very stale. If they could have made each animals care different, it may have been okay.

A "remastered" version of the game? I had this game under its old name (Bigfoot: Chasing Shadows) a few years ago, and enjoyed it. I got it from BFG, and got a refund based on the fact the scenes in the walkthrough are no longer in the game, scenes I liked the look of the game for, the ones with the animals. I will be interested to see if those are in this version. Even if they aren't, and I don't expect them to be, it will be fun to replay the game. I can't reinstall it from BFG, and didn't know it was around anymore.

I had no problems installing it on my slow Windows 8.1 computer. No email or Facebook necessary today! I have no problems using the email route anyway, have never had any emails other than the download link.

The game is different from what we are used to. You have a tab for your current task/objects and another to use the inventory you do find/get. What can be confusing, until you read this, is that one list of items to find may be in two different locations! So, move the cursor around and see where you can go. For instance, the first HOS outside the house continues into the garden.

I have literally a dozen unplayed games, but I'm going to play this one today! I'm home sick from work, and this will be the perfect game to spend my day on.

Thank you!

Their version took out all the parts where you save the animals in the cages, then come back when you need a hint (or when you want to feed and play with them). So, this is the "real" game! I will say though, Guinea pigs do NOT use wheels! They should NEVER use wheels! It's "just a game," but someone may see that and get ideas. It's bad for their backs.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

That's a very good point. we used to keep Guinea Pigs until we lost them to foxes shortly after we moved to this house three years ago. We stupidly put them in what we call the secret garden, a part of the back garden that is hidden from view.

Always had a pair. Was very traumatic after keeping them for 15 years. (Not the same ones). Lovely animals. We now keep dwarf rabbits. Converted the garage and a small room into their home a good 30 feet by 15 feet, with boxes to climb and hide in. We do let them explore parts of the house a couple of times a week as well. It's really cute watching them tentatively hop out of their area and go explore. Oddly when you go into their rooms they will happily come up to you and let you stroke and handle them, but if you try to approach them in the rest of the house they will immediately run back to their rooms.

Big thumbs up so far! Win 8.1; downloaded and installed fine to my chosen directory (one reason I like to get these from here and not from MyPlayCity directly).
Not at all frustrating (I'm still only part-way through); though there have been a couple of times I was a bit stumped, there IS a hint button, and usually just thinking a bit or running your mouse around for sparkles helps. One nervous moment when I exited the game and then re-opened (because someone mentioned thinking that it didn't save the place) and it took a while before my name and "play" came on the screen, but all was well. I'm finding it mildly challenging (just what I need during stressful times :)), the graphics are fine and not glaringly outdated, and music is unobtrusive. Thanks, GGOTD and hugs, WR!

do not bother downloading this game as it is the most frustrating game i have ever play nothing make any sense cant get anywhere so take my advise skip this one and hope they put a playable game next week

Hi dd, personally i found the game very entertaining, with a decent mix of HOG and some unusual mini games, plus some more familiar, but quality mini games. It may not be to everyone's taste, but with the mix I'm sure many community members will find this an excellent game. Sorry you found it frustrating. From my experience of gaming over the years, this was maybe mildly frustrating at times, that is until i figured out some aspects of the game that i wasn't initially sure about; however, once figured, I loved it.

dd, I see that Margaret had no problem with windows 7 and firefox. I'm running vista. The "share and download" button doesn't operate for me in vista/firefox. When I us IE it works but it doesn't turn green. Can't get email to respond either from either browser. Do I need to be using chrome?. I understand it's available at the site. Once I'm at Myplaycity, where do I go to down load it? Do I have to download something else first? Thanks in advance.

skybase, I'm using Vista with Opera these days for almost everything on the web. Firefox crashes frequently, sometimes need to reboot the whole PC (and yes, I've completely cleared my user account (Mozilla calls it a "Reset") and removed/reinstalled Firefox). Chrome no longer supports Vista so don't go there. I still refuse to use IE, maybe it's just a habit now but there were too many security issues for too long. Opera is the only one left (that is not IE-based or Firefox-based) with a sizeable user base....

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

I'm beginning to get fed up of Firefox/Waterfox. There isn't a day goes by that they crash on me. They do open up all the pages I've lost, however, if either of them crash while I'm commenting on this site or posting in the forums, everything I've posted tends to be lost, same with emails. Maybe I should try Opera as well. Never have before.

dd, It just took me a few scenes to get the hang of it. Unlike regular HOGs, you can sometimes go to different scenese within the main one (like the first backyard scene you can go into the shed (straight ahead, the door) or go further into the backyard if you move your cursor to the left you'll get an arrow pointing left to take you there). It's kind of like a search within a search. LOL But the inventory and list of items to seach for is confusing to me and I still get mixed up. I do prefer the list separate and at the bottom.

Hi JBDean, thank you for those comments, will just post the once here though. Mondays Steam key is worth applying for, though you can get it for 70% off today. The sale ends at 6pm UK time (in just over 8 hours time). Cost of the game at the moment is £1.49/$2.39. I should have my review posted in about 20 minutes, just got to upload some images them i'm ready to post. :) Have agreat week.

Sorry - I should have added that I had no problem downloading this from the GAOTD site and didn't need to go through any Facebook or email hoops.

I enjoyed playing this game a couple of years ago - it's certainly the same one as "Bigfoot...". It's a decent if somewhat outdated HOPA (maybe more like than HOG than a true HOPA but that's fine by me). I found there were places that I really needed to think carefully to work out what needed to be done, so I give that good marks. The graphics are a bit dated, but I don't mind about that as it's been around a good time.

I'm very grateful to MPC for giving us these games without all the initial hoops to go through. However, I do find it rather frustrating that when I look into the file I've finished up with, I have quite a number of unneeded icon files (I think I deleted five today) - these are, I admit, only maybe 50KB or so each, but they all mount up in terms of disk space and it's a pain having to find each of them and delete them. Would it be possible for MPC to give GAOTD the files without all these extra things as well as they have managed to circumvent the initial hoops?

Ok, so there's a problem with the face book box. That's obvious. It doesn't turn green with Firefox or Internet Explorer either today or yesterday. So you say to go to my play city and download it there. I wen't to play city and I clicked on free games and they want me to download some program that downloads the game. If you want us to download the game from My Play City you need to provide instructions like you do for steam. I don't want to guess if I'm in the right place.
I really like the match games and wanted yesterdays game. It seems the problems we are having with browsers is due to Face book.
I'd like to be able to use firefox. I think the work needs to be done to except all popular browers. The email like didn't work last night either. I'm trying it again this morning with two different addresses.
Thanks

skybase,
I don't have a Facebook. When necessary I use the email a link option. But, today and yesterday? The games don't need the link via email or Facebook. They download right from here. It's the big green "Download Now" button.
I use Firefox, and never had a problem.

If you're concerned about giving out your email to get the link, it's easy to use a one-off address. Also, I'll just mention that I have used the email route several times over the last year or so and have never received spam that I could connect to MPC.

Mum: "Yesterday and today I have tried the "click on facebook share and download then close the pop-up" trick that has always worked in the past, but it won't work any more"

steve: "Same here on 2 different browsers, can't get to download it"

If it saves anyone some time, Firefox & Chrome do nothing when the button to Share is clicked, while closing the F/Book log-in popup in ie 11 & Opera does nothing.

"stuck unless I start giving my email addresses out which I don't really want to do"

If you set up a free Gmail account you can access it in your browser, when you sign in after requesting a link from GOTD their email should be on top, so easy to find, it's very easy to delete emails [spam], & you don't have to use that account for anything else if you don't want to. If you already have a Gmail account, maybe set up another.

I can't download anything.

Yesterday and today I have tried the "click on facebook share and download then close the pop-up" trick that has always worked in the past, but it won't work any more and the download box continues to demand I share and download.

Any ideas please?

Mum, I concur the workaround for the non-existent emailed download link during the giveaway time no longer works in both chrome and firefox based browsers if this keeps up then many of us will have no alternative but cease investing our time and ad impressions on the giveaway of the day project as there is little point waiting for an emailed link that normally never arrives.

Mum, I have the same problem. And even more annoying, it insists on displaying the forced share page too large (and even windowing does not help). I have to unlock & hide my toolbar, then play with the windowing button till it finally deigns to show me the buttons to click. Found going to my facebook page & deleting the entry as soon as it is put up works quite well, but a nuisance.

Mum, it is clear that GAOTD team have fixed the code that permitted the workaround we used out of choice, accordingly they have become adversarial with non-facebook users so although I have solved the issue and invented a workaround it would be counterproductive for myself and anyone figuring out the new workaround to post it publicly here as that would provide information GAOTD could use to countermeasure non-facebook users downloading the days giveaway PROMPTLY on the giveaway day! Sorry :(

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi TK, something definitely was wrong, but I doubt the giveaway team did what you are suggesting. I've just downloaded the latest giveaway and it looks like they have removed the Facebook window completely as I went straight to download. Hopefully they will fix the issue. They know many community members are not happy using Facebook, which is why the system worked the way it did, i.e. click on the Facebook button, then cancel the Facebook login, then the green download button appeared. That gave both those who didn't mind posting details of the giveaway to their friends and also allowed those who don't use Facebook to skip it.
The whole point of adding the Facebook step was and still is to increase awareness of the giveaway site. I still pass on details of this project to people I meet and so far everyone I've ever mentioned it to (apart from one person online) have never heard of the giveaway project. There may be hundreds of thousands of community members visiting the main site but that is a drop in the ocean when you look at how many potential members we could have if the site was better known. The giveaway team compromised by adding the ability to side step Facebook, which as mentioned above seems to have gone awry recently. Hopefully they will fix the issue soon. They know it's in their best interest to keep both sides of the fence happy (with respect to loving or hating Facebook) . They don't want to lose community members because the more that visit, the better chance we have of getting better software.

This is the reason I do not believe that the Russians were responsible for hacking into Hillary Clinton's email server: they can't write a downloadable program! I've tried 3 times to download this game and got 230 MB, 40 MB, and 224 MB...all short of the 246 MB claimed by the GOTD site, or the 247 MB displayed by Windows 10. There finally is a game on here that might be worth getting, and it is unobtainable!

game.exe file has trojan (detected by superantispyware)
Regards

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi FL, The game is clean. what your security is probably detecting is the security wrapper used to protect game giveaways from hackers. They use a Themida based wrapper, which can also be used to hide malware, so some security software will block the installation. what you are getting is a false positive. the game giveaway team have been giving away games originally on a daily basis from Dec 2nd 2006 to April 2008, then most weekends since and have never given away a game that was infected with malware.

Reply   |   Comment by FL  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-2)

Hi, tx for your reply.
To be sure for your info, the trojan it indicates is "Trojan.Agent/Gen-Prorat"
Is that ok ?
FL

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi FL, The file is definitely safe. The giveaway team check every file they put up for download with several different anti-malware suites. As mentioned earlier, they have been giving games away regularly for almost 10 years (Dec 2006) and have never given away a file infected with malware. Because of they have a very good standing with the major search engines. Allowing malware ridden games and software would compromise that standing. What i mean by standing is, when you do a search, giveaways will usually be on the first page of any search, and often the first one. I've tested this several times over the intervening years when I discovered they had been given such standing. Googling a short phrase i've posted myself, usually in the comments section, those comment shave usually shown up in Google within seconds.
