This is a holiday weekend here....... so sorry I am late.
Downloaded and installed(Win7)with no mishaps as usual. I like the part as it changes the way you match things. Having no timer is good but an option should be added for the people who like to "play against the clock". Reminds me of 80 Days.... Music is OK
Thanks to GGOTD and Playrix for a decent game for the weekend. Thanks, Wabbit, too for your help and review.

At first it looks like another mahjong game but there's enough variations to keep it interesting. Although it seems the variations run in cycles and not randomly.
It also appears New York is known for it's cowboy gangsters. :)

Wow, WR, this one downloaded and opened fine! Same procedure, disabled my av, etc. Don't know what the deal is with the others I've downloaded since the wrapper, but this one worked. Yay!

The wrapper contains security software. Your anti malware program was probably blocking it.

I have windows 7 64 bit home premium and I tried what you had suggested.-Compatibility mode and screen resolutions... *sigh
My screen is only 11 inches and it is a netbook... perhaps being a netbook is a clue...I tried everything and It won't go to window mode/small screen instead of full. I even tried the regedit and only one file came up in the search and it was a bionary code... I'm not a programmer and cannot decipher all the 1111 and 0000 and 10001111000 thingies like that... so I left that alone :) Any ways... it is no biggy... it is still playable... I just have to get used to it on a rainy day :)
Thanks Stephen for trying...it is very appreciated :)

You are probably right re the netbook. Ah well, maybe next time. :)

for the last 3 weeks when I download and open it it says fail to open try again later, so I cannot open it, so why it this happening and what can I do to get this going right, I asked this last week with no response.
........................Moderator Comment......................
Hi bcwminpins, I always respond to rrequests for help. I may occasionally miss a post, but rarely.. I cannot find any trace of your post, at least not from the connection you are using for this comment (I am able to recall all comments by a community member from the admin panel and don't see any for you).
Anyway, havce you checked the FAQ's I've linked to in my review? You will hopefully find an answer to the ptroblem there. Generally this problem can be due to at least one of three things.
1) ... If you are using a browser other than Internet Explorer and you have I.E. set to offline, you won't be able to connect to the giveaway download server to verify the game.
2) ... Clear out your internet cache. Sometimes the cookie for the giveaway link becomes corrupted.
3) ... Your anti malware program or other security may be blocking it
Actually there's another possibility. Try rebooting your modem and/or router.

#15 Nass: I didn't get the "triangle" + blowtorch = water thing, either. Then I finally got it: it's not a triangle, it's ice!
#19 Pea: You probably already know this, but if you want Playrix' Around the World in 80 Days game back, you can get it from several of the free sites Rabbit mentions in his reviews, with the usual cautions about watching for unwanted toolbars & homepage hijacks.

Haven't played it long but it seems like a very nice Majong game. Majong is not my favorite but I like how the game moves from one form to another and gives brief clear instuctions. Fun and diverting. The artwork doesn't have the wow factor I'd hoped to see but I liked how the light changed on the city as I played. Thanks.

I have the mahjong game which WR has mentioned here before.
It is the real game; ie one plays with three other players(they are customizable too) and it really requires a lot of thinking and skill.
Having said THAT, I DO really like THIS game. I had no issues with downloading(windows 7 64 bit) and it ran beautifully from the very beginning.
I like that it has various playing modes, NOT just the mindless matching of tiles.. It doesn't feel mindless at all, and I can tell it will be enjoyed both by myself and by my husband who has become very proficient at the real mahjong...lol
The graphics are very pleasant and it seems a very high quality game. MANY thanks both to Playrix and to GGOTD!
.....................Moderator Comment.....................
Thank you for your feedback Merri. I much prefer playing the four player variety. I have a 'real' set of Mahjong tiles made of resin and bamboo, plus I have a digital version called Hong Kong Mahjong from Nine Dragons Software. I much preferred playing Mahjong to chess when I was a teenager.

I am having trouble with the game. When it runs, my mouse drags. Moving it quickly is impossible. The game runs full screen no matter how many times I try to change it. After I'd played through the first round and closed the game, I closed the Windows Explorer window where the setup file was stored. A error message popped up.
The Compressed (zipped) Folder is invalid or corrupted.
I didn't know if the message referred to the setup file of the game or something else entirely. However, I decided to try downloading again. I did, and I re-installed but the problems with the game continue. I'm using WinXP SP3.
Very disappointing.
...........................Moderator comment..........................
Hi Kalmly, I don't understand why you are having a problem changing from full screen to windowed. I've installed this on four different computers and have checked to see if there are any issues changing fro full screen to windowed and back and all four change with no problems. I think a few others have reported thyis problem, but there has been several thousand downloads with only a few complaints. That would point to a computer related issue as opposed to a game issue.
Try going into compatibility and change some of the graphic options. also make sure your graphic drivers are up to date. I'd consider trying the free game booster from the razer store. It can boost your free memory by 40%. That may imprive the problem with the sluggish mouse. another thing to try is turning off background programs one at a time as one of those may be conflicting with the game.
Check the comments I've posted to annie and Maarten above.

All in all a real winner. For genre fans & free it's 10/10. Regular players of thinkers 9/10 and in general 8.75/10 Thanks muchooo!

Also installs fine on Win 7 64 bit and display looks fine in wide screen format. Had to use 7Zip to unzip as the self-extractor did not want to play with this machine, though it worked fine on the XP desktop.
Did not have any problems putting it in windowed mode. I can live without the music but overall the variety of gameplay makes this one of the better mahjong games. Haven't gotten far enough to see if the "world" stuff really makes any sense in the game or was just a gimmick to recycle backgrounds that look like they came out of "Around the World in 80 Days" -- a much loved Playrix game I lost in an upgrade. Thanks for this. It's a lot of mindless fun.

Playing on the second solitaire level (level 8 I think) and the game froze up. I had completed all the bottom tiles and there were many wild or random tiles (maybe 8 of them?) still in the center of the board. Wouldn't let me shuffle, had to reboot.

Thank you for your feedback Lynn, please let me know if it happens again. check your event log immediately afterwards as that can give an indication of a possible fault or conflict with something else that you may have running in the background. Make sure the game is running with admin privileges

One other person has had this problem. It's possibly a conflict with something you are running in the background. You could check through the registry and see if there are any keys you can edit to change the screen mode back to windowed. It's aplayrix game so there will be entries in the registry (unlike most game giveaways). I haven't got the time toi check myslef at the moment. Maybe someone else may be able to. :)

Just wanted to put my 2¢ into the comments section. I downloaded and installed on Win7Pro/no problems. I must say thanks for this giveway today. I enjoy mahjong gams and might add that I do get tired of the same old tiles in most games. That being said, if you enjoy mahjong games and want something different but still have mahjong, you must download and install this giveway today. I enjoyed playing the first levels and stopped at Great Wall as I have to do my chores around the house sometime today before it gets back into the 100°'s. I enjoyed this game very much and love the different tiles, and different types of these levels. Thanks again.

Thanks to Playrix and GAOD for this delightful game. Graphix are beautiful and the music is soothing. The only glitch it has is that I do not want to play it on full screen. As usual, I always go to options and adjust the screen option and check off full screen so that it would be smaller. I tried it 4 times and reloaded it 4 times and it won't reload as smaller. It remains checked at full screen. With that said...if it is the only glitch, well I love most of the Playrix game and this one is a keeper. :)

Try changing your screen resolution first, then go to options and see if you can reset to windowed. Try different resolutions. also try going into compatibility (right click the exe or shortcut and select properties, then click on the compatibility tab), then try toggling the fdifferent gtraphic options on and off (basically trial and error). it may be something to do with the (can't remmeber the name of the ... ????). I've also suggested below checking the registry to see if there's any registry keys that can be edited to force it into windowed mode. (to open the registry editor type regedit, then go to the edit and select find, type in the name of the game to bring up relevant keys). Let me know if you find a fix from these suggestions. thanks. :)

While this is not my style of game. I just want to take the time to Thank Game Give Away Of The Day and to Thank Playrix Games for providing what I am sure would be a awesome game to many of the community here.
Unfortunately I am not one of those who will find this game playable let alone enjoyable so I should normally not click thumbs up or down. But I will vote up for what looks like a solid game with great play styles.
Again I do give this game a up vote even if I Think the amount of levels to be played seems a tad lacking. But who am I to know for sure I have only a minimum experience with Mahjong's games But the music and the in game graphics plus the great use of colours incorporated with a changing back ground of city's.
I give this game a respectable 7 out of 10 based solely on Youtube videos and game screen shots...
I hope others will love this game for what it is. I just wish I could be one of those that would enjoy this style of game but since I am not I will end my thoughts on this thread.
Thank you Playrix & GGAOTD for all of what you both do.
Signed

Works just fine on XP SP3.
I have World's Greatest Places Mahjongg from MyPlayCity, which I like, but I like this one even better. First of all, it's untimed (yay!). And it has a lot more different puzzle types. The tile set(s) aren't a lot different, but I like them better, too. The "secret" (bonus) tiles are better designed, so it's easier to remember what they do. (The bonus tiles in Greatest Places are so abstract I had to print out a screenshot of the help page, and I still have trouble keeping track of them.) And I like the Solitaire levels, which I don't remember having in Greatest Places.
I don't remember being aware that World's Greatest Places was a Playrix game, but I'm not surprised. I think more of my favorites are from Playrix than any other game developer.
Thanks, all!

World's Greatest Cities Mahjong:
Installation:Today’s giveaway downloads as a 50.5 MB zip file that unpacks to a read me and a wrapped setup file (the orange colored file with the key symbol), plus there's a setup file with security (setup.gcd) that's protected from being hacked (because the previous giveaway system was easily cracked). This file may case some security software to alert the user to a possible malware attack, but it will be a false positive.
The game giveaway team check all game giveaways for malware using several well known anti -malware suites. There has never been a game giveaway infected with malware since the project started back in Dec 2006. (The owners know that allowing such things would compromise their buisness, so they make sure all software given away via the giveaway and gamegiveaway sites are throughly checked for all types of malware before allowing community members to download any files.
Some community members have been having problems installing games since the security software was added. It's been found that turning off your security temporarily or configuring it to accept the setup.cgd file usually sorts the problem out.
To register and install the game click on the orange colored icon. The installed game is 47.6 MB in size and installs to the following path by default:
C:\Program Files\Playrix Entertainment\World's Greatest Cities Mahjong\Greatest Cities.exe (If the install path shows the last game installed you need to clear your internet cache)
The path can be changed to suit whatever your wishes are. Once the game is installed you can delete the giveaway setup files. The game installs 2 shortcuts to the desktop (a shortcut to the game and a shortcut to Playrix). You'll also find a shortcut in the Start Menu for an uninstaller.
World's Greatest Cities Mahjong works on both my Win 7 & Win 8 computers. I don't have a Vista or XP installation set up at the moment (and won't for several months until we move house later this summer).
If you miss today's giveaway today's sister program Worlds Greatest Places Mahjong is available from MyPlayCity (MPC) or Gametop 24/7, but do bear in mind the potential for toolbars and home page changes everytime you boot up an MPC game.
Introduction:
Reference accessed HERE 22nd June 2013
The Game:
We all know what Mahjong is, so I'm not going to describe this game in much detail except to briefly describe each of the modes available.
You can turn off the music and sound effects via the sliders located in the options menu. you can also play the game in windowed or full screen mode. There is a help menu that details all of the modes you'll be introduced to (see below for the various modes. There's no specific mode selection except that the level map is color coded so that for exxample if you want to play all of the Non Pair boards click on the thumbnail that's coded orange. You can only play the boards on the sage you are presently on. there are seven stages, each stage comprising of 20 levels, that are a combination of all seven modes. To progress to a new stage (a different city) you have to complete the previous stage first.
The color coding for each of the modes is a sfollows:
Matching Pairs - Red
Non Pairs - Orange
Solitaire - Yellow
Great wall - Green
Logical Triple - Light blue
Bottom tile - Dark Blue
5 Seconds - Purple
Matching Pairs:
This is your traditional 'matching pairs game where you have to remove all matching pairs from the board.
Non Pair:
In each layer of the board there's only one tile that does not have a pair. Find it. The rest of the tiles in the layer will disappear once you've selected the correct tile. You must clear all layers to finish the level.
Solitaire:
You play this like you'd play a game of solitaire with cards, collecting tiles from Ace to Deuce of each suit. You start with the ace and work down to the deuce (2). To remove each tile to the bottom frame just click on it.Tiles must be free to be removed. Free tiles have no tiles on top, or left or right of them. The tiles that are not part of the sequence can be removed as pairs like the matching pairs game.
Great Wall:
Take off identical tiles that lay on opposite sides of the wall. In order to remove a tile , it must have either the left or right edge free and have no tiles placed on top. Remove all tiles to complete the level.
Logical Triple:
In the frame at the bottom of the board there are tiles that are 'logically' related to two tiles on the board. Select these two tiles to remove them. In order to remove tiles , they must have either the left or right edge free and have no tiles placed on top. Remove all tiles to complete the level.
Bottom Tiles:
You have to remove tiles one by one. Click any free tile on the board that is identical to one of the tiles in the frame at the bottom of the board. All tiles must be removed to complete a level. In order to remove tiles , they must have either the left or right edge free and have no tiles placed on top.
5 Seconds:
You have to remove tiles one by one by clicking on the tiles that are free and identical to the tile in the frame at the bottom of the board. This tile changes every 5 seconds, making it quite difficult. All tiles must be removed to complete a level.
There are four secret tiles one of which shows all matches for 30 seconds (green question mark) , one that removes all instances of any tile you choose (Red stylized lightning strike), there's a swap tile that can be used to move tiles that are embedded within a block of tiles (orangy brown left and right arrows) and change will give you more matches when you only have a few. Select two tiles and all instances of the second tile will be changed to match the first tile (Yellow/orange with three squares).
The beauty about this game is thta every time you play the same level again, the tiles are set differently, so you can replay the game and have a totally different experience each time.
Suggestions to the developer:
1) ... Include several skins for different style tiles
2) ... Enable more backgrounds to be imported into the game
3) ... Be able to access all stages so that you can play all the levels of any mode you wish, rather than have to complete each stage before you progress
4) ... Include a levels editor so that you can create your own levels
5) ... Include modes from the other world games for example the memory game and four rivers game, (found in the World’s Greatest Places Mahjong game)
6) ... Include a timed and untimed mode
7) ... Include a straightforwards matching pairs mode where you can play just the main mahjong game
8) include the traditional four player game as an option.
Summary of Features:
* 7 mahjong game types
* 140 different layouts
* 14 different backgrounds
* Reasonable music (quite restful)
* 4 Special power-up tiles
* 7 stages
Video:
You can see a couple of videos of World's Greatest Cities Mahjong HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE
Music:
There's no way of editing the music content for this game. you can turn the music off via the options menu and play your own. :)
Minimum System Specifications:
Windows 98/ 2000/ XP/ Vista/ 7
CPU: 800 MHz
System RAM: 256 MB
DirectX: 7 or higher
Video RAM:16 MB
Conclusion:
This is a nice addition to the World series of Mahjong games. Overall World's Greatest Cities Mahjong is a pleasant game of mah-jong with a variety of modes to play from the traditional matching pairs solitaire to several alternative methods of playing (solitaire, great wall, logical triple, non pairs etc). The addition of these extra modes with power ups included makes the game much easier to play than a traditional game; also the tiles that can't be removed can be toggled to grey out. This makes it even easier. For me this was okay as it made it much easier on the eyes. Traditional games tend to give me a headache because of the mass of visual information. Despite this being an easier Mah-jong game I've scored it an excellent 8 out of 10 because of the variety of modes available.
Score:
Overall I'd give this game the following score:
Gameplay - 8
Graphics - 8
Replayability - 9
Originality - 7
Instructions/help - 8
Totals 40 out of 50 which is equivalent to 8 out of 10
