Foma is a student heading home for the holidays. Short on cash for a ticket, he trudges on foot across the fields, savoring the fresh air. Suddenly, he encounters a suspicious old woman—a witch. After a short but tense conversation, his nerves snap: Foma swings and strikes—she falls headfirst onto a stone and goes still.

The local men, her so-called "relatives," catch Foma and pass sentence: atone for your sin by standing three nights in the abandoned church by her coffin, lest her soul awaken and bring calamity upon the village.
