War Obelisk:
In Brief:
War Obelisk is a 2D top-down Tower Defense game.

You can see a video of game play HERE.

The Game:
War Obelisk is very similar to Magic Staves and Turrim that we were given over the last few weeks with several different tower defences. Initially you only have access to five defences, one of which is a non-permanent placement defence called Lightning, that is very useful on multiple enemies when congregated near the home base (because each enemy will be affected by the lightning strike). The home base is in the form of an Obelisk which periodically creates a blue coloured mana which is used to activate the lightning strike defence. To use this defence, select it with one click of the left mouse button, then click where you wish the strike to take place.

The other four defences in the first few levels include the Destroyer with a 3-4 damage and a medium attack speed. The Bunny Tower has the greatest reach, but is slower to recharge than the destroyer, that is your basic 'go to' weapon, though either of these two placeable towers are useful in the early stages of the game. What the bunny tower loses in its slower recharge speed (approx' half of the Destroyers reload speed) and slighter weaker attack, it makes up for by being able to cover a much larger area. Then, the next tower to consider is the Obelisk that slows down the enemies' advance, this is a useful tower defence, when used in conjunction with any other defences, especially the moon defence, which has a rapid rate of fire compared to the other attack defences. Every time you place a new tower of the same type, it costs more coin to place, so, the more you place, the more expensive it becomes. Coins are earned by destroying enemies with some coins being created by the home base.

When you move on to later levels you also get two mana improvers i.e., speed up mana production and increase maximum mana storage; each storage improvement adds an extra 10 mana to the store capacity, which is very useful as you progress in the game as the lightning strike can be a saviour towards the end of level game. The last wave of each level also includes a boss that has a lot of HP (hit points) so is very difficult to destroy.

Later levels introduce other buffs such as upgrades for the attack towers, at least for the Destroyer and Bunny towers though I've not seen these yet as I keep losing my home base before I can get to the end of the last few waves of the second level; this was also the case in both previous giveaways that were very similar to this game. You can see at least twelve different towers and buffs by looking at the images at the top of the page; just below the countdown timer.

Each level shows you where to expect the enemy to appear via a skull marker with a countdown indicating the number of enemies still to come before the next wave is due. This gives you some warning of multiple routes on some levels.

You must protect the home base from attack by enemy forces. The base creates mana, at a steady rate; 'initially' this is up to a maximum of 20, so make sure you use them because once it's up to the maximum of 20, further production of mana is lost. Bear in mind that each use of the buff costs increasingly more mana to use, i.e., each time you use the lightning strike it costs one extra mana. Using these mana multipliers can be advantageous because they increase the speed of production of mana as well as increase the number of mana that can be stored at any one time by ten for each purchase of the buff.

You can see how much life the home base has via its life bar, located above the obelisk; if this reaches zero, the level restarts. Each successive level has increased numbers of waves to contend with and also becomes much harder to beat, unless you've figured out a successful strategy to survive each wave.

Once you've completed at least one wave the game will save your progress and a new main menu item will be added called Continue; however, if you click on new game, all previous progress will be deleted.

Conclusion:
There are lots of these top down 2D tower defence games available these days. Over the last few years there have been a plethora of them released and we've seen quite a few given away here over the last few months.

Overall War Obelisk is a reasonably challenging Tower Defense game; worth downloading, especially if you missed Magic Staves and Turrim that, as mentioned above were given away over the last few weeks. It's an ideal game to play when you have a few moments spare, though it's not one I'd play for extended periods; for that, I'd choose a more interesting Tower Defense game to play like Defense Grid: The Awakening (one of my favourite TD games with an isometric viewpoint) or Bloons TD 6 or Bloons TD5 (both top down), Plants vs. Zombies (isometric lane defence), Sanctum 2 (first person viewpoint and excellent coop play), Towers of Altrac (isometric viewpoint, or Orcs Must Die! (Third Person viewpoint), or for free Bloons TD Battles and Bloons TD Battles 2; all of which I can easily play for an hour or more.
Notes on Security
I scanned a zipped copy of the installed game using Virus Total and it found zero hits from 64 antimalware engines. You can see the scan of the installed game HERE.

I installed this game and played it for a little bit. At first I figured out a plan to rid of the enemies until towards the end of the enemies spawning there was a whole lot of them that showed up all of a sudden so place your attack points quickly.

The tile set for the game graphics reminds me of early 80s - 90s retro JRPG games especially Zelda on SNES.

If anyone is interested in a Tower Defense game where you're put under pressure, checkout the game Rampart. I prefer the arcade version of the game as many of these ports missed the arcade perfection mark.

The original game used a trackball so on emulators for Mame the mouse may act as it.

Like its predecessors mentioned by WR, doesn't work on my Win XP, SP3, 32 bit computer. May work on some XP machines, as stated in the specifications. My problem may be that it's designed for a dual core CPU, and this very old machine has a single core. Or maybe it's 64 bit only. Thanks anyway, GGOTD.
